H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Resist a confrontation with that irksome person. The matter will soon blow over anyway. Meanwhile, channel your high Arian energy into areas with more positive potential. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The innovative Bovine finds a creative way to resolve a sensitive domestic problem by midweek. A former colleague returns with an intriguing business suggestion. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) An unexpected critical statement from someone you trust could catch you momentarily off guard. But you soon recover your equilibrium and rise to the challenge. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might feel you can handle a new project on your own. But advice from someone with experience could help you avoid possibly costly as well as time-consuming obstacles. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Waiting for others to make decisions is difficult for the take-charge Lion. But by week’s end, you should hear news that will help you regain control of the situation. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your superjudgmental side could dominate the week unless you try to keep it in check. Otherwise you risk offending people, including some who are very close to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Expect more information to come out about that possible career shift. Meanwhile, your loving concern helps someone close to you get through a worrisome period. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Despite an occasional setback, workplace pressures should continue to ease through most of the week. This would be a good time to plan that long-delayed trip. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sage Sagittarian quickly recognizes an opportunity when she or he sees it, especially if it’s one you’ve been planning for. Take aim and go for it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Sea Goat’s unique insight guides you as you check out a questionable situation. Your efforts should prove rewarding for you and your many supporters. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might want to pace yourself a bit more. Rushing could lead to serious slip-ups. Take more time to check out details you might otherwise overlook. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The best way to resolve those remaining problems is to ask others for help. They’ll be happy to do so, especially when you agree to share the credit for a job well done. BORN THIS WEEK: Your natural gift for honest leadership earns you the respect and admiration of others.

FOREVER REMEMBERED
Pavilion ~ Robert “Bob” Lawrence Krebs passed away peacefully at home under hospice care, surrounded by his family, on March 13, 2018.
Creating Timeless Memories
Bob was born on June 16, 1948 in Rochester, N.Y., and was a long-time resident of Genesee County. He attended LeRoy Central Schools and served in the Vietnam War from 1968 - 1970. Upon returning from the war, he spent his time working and raising his family. He loved cars from the time he was a young boy and was a self-taught expert car mechanic (his avocation), who enjoyed doing body work and restoring antique cars. He was a regular attendee of local antique car shows. Bob was an extrovert, who loved being around people (especially at the Pok-A-Dot diner in Batavia), and we will miss hearing his stories and jokes. Bob is survived by his wife, Nancy Lee (Main) Krebs; his children, Terri (Mike) Laurie, Rick (Donna) Krebs, Cyril (Patty) Krebs; his nephew, Skip Main; his grandchildren, Ricky Jr., Jamie, Jacob and Sara; his step-grandchildren, Eric, Meghan, Krystal, Jessica, Terra, Trevor and Ashley; great-grandson, Jackson, sisters, Cheryl (Steve) Lapham and Linda (Paul) Klich and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Cyril Irwin and Marie Constance (Paladino) Krebs and his infant son, Robert Krebs Jr. Special thanks goes out to his niece, Tiffany Hoag, a nursing assistant, who provided loving care when he became sick and to the Pok-A-Dot crew for always helping out and being great friends.

LOCAL IS working hard
Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!” ~Robin Williams
Local is powerful. When Terence Brown moved to Rochester from Jamaica in 1993, he had a simple dream: “To get a better life.” And he achieved that, by forming Steel Tech Fabricators, a booming business that creates the steel skeletons of schools, hospitals, factories and other buildings. Terence relies on Tompkins Bank of Castile and Tompkins Insurance Agencies to help him. “If you pick up the phone and call them, they will send someone out,” he says. “Our business aims to go above and beyond. And so do they.”

I would like to thank the woman who found my wallet at the Victor Target store on Wednesday afternoon, March 7th. After paying for my purchases, I thought I dropped my wallet back into my purse, but without me realizing it, I missed and it fell to the floor. I was told the honest woman in line behind me turned it in, completely intact. I was home for a while before realizing my wallet was missing, and panic set in. What a relief when told Target had it in their locked cabinet. I can't thank you enough for being honest and turning my wallet over to customer service. Whoever you are, I am eternally grateful to you. Thank you to the Target employees who kept it secured until I could retrieve it. Bless all of you.
I’d like to respond to the venter who was complaining about recycling in an "upscale neighborhood" making the area a "mess." HOW can you complain about a natural phenomenon over which people have no control?! Send all your hot air up to the weather gods!! (BTW it's "incredible" NOT "incredulous").
Just after getting to a Doctor appointment for my Husband today (we are Seniors) my cairn terrier-support dog "J" got loose when the plastic snap on his collar came apart. J took off running through the Henrietta Park area with me chasing after him. J wasn't slowing down and he then ran across Calkins Road. I would still be trying to find and catch J if it weren't for "Sam and Cory of the Town of Henrietta" who came to my aid, caught and saved J. Thank you so very much Sam and Cory!!! God Bless You! I will pay it forward. Anna and J I want to thank my wonderful neighbors from the farm on
I travel up and down [local road] many times since I have family in [local town]. I had to stop a few times for the ducks that cross the road to get to the water on the other side. I watch for them every time I drive that way. My heart was broken when I saw one had gotten hit. Ducks do not fly away like other birds do. They waddle away. If you cannot stop or slow down for these beautiful creatures then you should not drive. I have stopped for all kinds of animals since I am an animal lover and we must share this earth with them. Please have a heart and watch out for the ducks. In a craft store the other night, a severely ill child was shopping for club project materials with Mom. Kid
Cadyville Rd. in Livonia. Every snowfall they send someone over to plow my very long driveway. During this last snowfall they were out there at 6am plowing so I could get to work on time. It is neighbors like that, that create a wonderful neighborhood to live in. Thank you so much. Thank you to all of the drivers who stopped to check on me after my car went off the road after encountering unexpectedly snowy roads in Lima over the weekend. It was heartwarming to see how many people took the time to make sure I was okay. And special thanks to the gentleman in the red pickup truck who was able
to tow my car out of the snow bank. Thank you again for taking the time to help!!!!
coughed at least 100 times most without covering mouth in the 20 minutes they were in the store. I counted 75 coughs after about 5 minutes of this while I cowered in back of store waiting for them to leave. I know it is important for a child to pick out their own supplies for projects, but the child clearly was not well enough shop in public yet. If he absolutely had to be there, kid needed a mask and proper instruction on covering cough Dracula style. Exposed fellow shoppers and employees to whatever illness child had. This is how severe illness spreads needlessly. Please be considerate of others by staying home or covering yourself with a mask if you must go out when ill.
Don't assume that your 'daytime running lights' include your taillights. Even on many of the newer vehicles, the back end of your vehicle is NOT illuminated, unless you physically turn your DRIVING lights on. Cars in this morning's fog were nearly invisible from behind; same thing happens in the rain and snow. EASY FIX? Drive with your lights on all the time, the cost of replacing them a little more often is more than offset by increasing your visibility and safety. Just because YOU can see doesn't mean other drivers can see you, especially if their windows are dirty.
Thank you to whoever found and turned in a gold hoop earring at The Dollar Store in Batavia. It has been reunited with its mate. Your honesty is appreciated by its grateful owner!

Wearing Hand-me-down Gowns Brides-to-be devote plenty of time to thinking about their wedding gowns, and some women spend months scouring stores for their ideal designs. But what if the perfect gown is already tucked away in a family member’s closet? Some brides view a hand-medown gown with a degree of skepticism. After all, people may poke fun at dresses passed on by well-meaning friends and family that feature styling that is out-ofdate (think 1980s shoulder pads). However, in most cases, dresses can be altered and turned into something that fits the new bride’s style and physique.

Go Figure!
Wearing a hand-me-down gown is something many brides consider, especially if the dress has sentimental meaning or is a family heirloom.

Students at St. Agnes School in Avon recently participated in their 14th Alcohol and Drug Awareness and Abuse Poster Contest for ages 8 to 11. Posters included a slogan that reflected either of the topics and an original visual image. Judges scored the posters on slogan, artistic merit and overall impact. This year the themes were clearly presented, the visuals conveyed a message and in turn additional time was spent on artistic talent which captured the judges’ attention and caused all of us to reflect on the topic. For 14 years in a row St. Agnes School has had 100% participation in the contest. The contest has created an increased awareness among the youth of problems with alcohol & drug abuse, and at the same time, the youth carry the word to others of their own age, in their own language. Each winner received a gift certificate presented by Elizabeth Jensen, Principal of St. Agnes School. Throughout the years over 100 - $50 savings bonds have been awarded to the youth.

Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy EASY DOES IT While it may be difficult to criticize anyone who is conscientious in his or her brushing and flossing habits, some people exert too much force (up to a pound of pressure) on their teeth and gums with their toothbrushes, which can erode enamel and damage gums. According to research, brushing for about two minutes with about five ounces of pressure proves adequate in removing plaque. To gauge five ounces of pressure, push down with your hand on a kitchen portion scale. If you use an electric toothbrush, even less pressure may be necessary, owing to the effectiveness of the high-speed brushing action. The dentist can detect signs of heavy brushing if there is a question. Brushing may take the lead in the fight against food and plaque build-up – the main causes of decay

and gum disease – but it is important to do it correctly for maximum results. Your family dentist can show you the most effective way to brush and floss your teeth. Remember, a sure investment in your future is a visit to your dentist today. This column is brought to you in the interest of better dental health by BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre. Phone: 585.343.4246. P.S. Because the bacteria-laden, sticky film known as “plaque” regenerates on teeth every 24 hours, daily brushing and flossing are critical.

It’s a fact that you already know. A mammogram can find lumps in the breast long before they are found any other way. A mammorgram only takes minutes. If you are uninsured and 40-64 years old, it’s FREE. So, what’s stopping you from calling right now?

--DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 53, and three years ago he had three stents put in due to clogged arteries. His cardiologist put him on Lipitor at 80 mg. I don’t know if this is necessary. I worry that it might do more harm than good. -- J.K. ANSWER: In people with blockages in the arteries in their hearts, there is really no doubt that medications like atorvastatin (Lipitor), a statin drug, reduce the risk of heart attack. Although they can have side effects, for most people the benefit far outweighs the risks. It’s important to recall that even a powerful medication like a statin can’t optimally treat people if they don’t treat themselves right. Years ago, I had a patient who was doing well after his bypass surgery and was taking a statin with good results. Walking through the hospital cafeteria, I saw him eating a triple cheeseburger (why the cafeteria even sold such a thing is a separate question), and he sheepishly argued that he was taking his statin. A statin can’t beat a triple cheeseburger. Good cardiac health requires a good diet of mostly plants, with whole grains, nuts, fruits and fish included for people who choose to. Exercise is the other important part of the treatment, and just plain walking is nearly as good as any exercise. Medication, though of benefit, is just a small part of a healthy lifestyle and preventing heart disease, which, although rates are decreasing, is still the leading cause of death in industrialized countries. READERS: Heart disease remains the No. 1 killer. The booklet on clogged heart arteries explains why they happen and what can be done to prevent clogging. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 101W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old male. I have really been shedding the hair on my arms and legs. Is this normal for a man of my age? I have been taking hydrocodone and simvastatin, along with the usual vitamin supplements. Could the medications or supplements that I am taking have anything to do with my hair loss? Could it be my diet, or is it just old age? -- R.C. ANSWER: Hair loss on the arms and legs is less common than on the scalp. Hormonal changes (especially thyroid and testosterone) and medications can be the culprit. A myriad of skin diseases can do it, but these usually have visible skin changes associated. Chronic swelling (edema) of the extremities might be the cause. Simvastatin has rarely been associated with hair loss. However, when I see hair loss on the lower extremities, I worry about peripheral artery disease, which is very common and underdiagnosed. Being on simvastatin suggests that you have had high cholesterol, which is a risk factor for PAD. Having hair loss on both arms and legs, however, makes me more concerned about a systemic cause. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Turkey Roulade with Cranberry Chutney Serves 6 1 1
sheet puff pastry pound turkey meat from turkey breast and/or thigh meat, cut into 1-inch chunks 3 eggs 1⁄2 cup chicken stock 1⁄4 cup Marsala 2 tablespoons unsalted butter Unbleached all-purpose flour, for the pastry 1⁄2 cup celery sliced on diagonal 1⁄2 cup sliced button mushrooms 1⁄2 cup Cranberry Chutney, plus more for serving Fresh parsley sprigs for garnish 1. Following the instructions on the package, thaw the puff pastry. This will take 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the type of pastry. You should be able to unfold it without it breaking. Set aside. 2. Pulse the turkey in a food processor until it is the consistency of ground beef. Add 2 of the eggs, the chicken stock, the Marsala, and the butter. Pulse again briefly, until just combined. 3. Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface until it is a 12- or 13-inch square. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the pastry on top. 4. Form the minced turkey mixture into a log and position it down the center of the prepared puff pastry. Make an indentation down the length of the turkey and place the celery, mushrooms, and cranberry chutney along the indentation. Cover the indentation with the meat, forming a log once again. 5. Wrap the puff pastry around the turkey, neatly folding the ends and top together, rolling or tucking the edges together, and pinching to seal any gaps. Make the pastrycovered log as round as possible, like a Yule log — try to avoid a flattened version, like a strudel. 6. Preheat the oven to 450 F. 7. Combine the remaining egg with 1 tablespoon water in a small bowl or cup. Stir well until completely mixed. Brush the roulade with the egg wash, being careful to brush every bit of the exposed pastry. 8. Bake for 10 minutes at 450 F, then reduce the heat to 375 F. Continue to bake for 30 to 45 minutes longer, until the pastry has risen and is a toasty, golden color and the turkey has reached an internal temperature of 165 F. Generally speaking, once the pastry has cooked, the meat will be cooked, too. Remove the roulade from the oven. Transfer it to a serving platter, using the parchment paper to help you. Allow to rest for about 10 minutes. 9. Slice and serve, garnishing with the parsley and served with a bowl of extra cranberry chutney.

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

Your Ergonomic gardening techniques can make gardening less taxing Gardening is a popular activity that seems to be gaining even more supporters. Statistics reports that the number of people who gardened within the last 12 months in the United States rose from around 105 million in 2008 to 118 million in 2017. Gardening can be relaxing yet physically demanding work. Gardeners who find themselves battling aches and pains after spending time in the garden may need to make a greater effort to reduce injuries and improve comfort when tilling, weeding or installing new landscape features. Ergonomic gardening techniques and tools can help gardeners reduce their risk of injury and make gardening more comfortable. Warm up Just as novice athletes wouldn’t dive right into a strenuous workout at the gym, nor should novice gardeners immediately pick up a shovel and jump into digging a hole for their new tree. Gardening requires bending, stooping, lifting, twisting, and other movements that work the entire body. Spending 10 or more minutes stretching, walking and doing a few back and arm rotations can limber the body up for the physical activity to come. Use proper form Think about the mechanics of lifting weights during a workout, as home and garden tasks may mimic movements made when exercising. The occupational therapists at Bend Spinal Care say that strain on the lower back can be reduced by positioning objects close to the body and its center of gravity when lifting them. Furthermore, people can contract their abdominal (core) muscles when lifting and bending to support the back. When lifting heavy objects, power should be derived from the legs and buttocks rather than the back.
Keep items close Keeping work closer to the body will reduce the need for stooping, leaning or reaching, which should cut down on pulled muscles. Long-handled tools can help minimize reaching. Use step ladders to reach high areas or get down on padded cushions to work closer to the ground. This alleviates strain to the neck from having to look up or down for extended periods of time. Raised garden beds can bring plants to a person’s level. The therapists at ProCare Physical Therapy say that working below shoulder level whenever possible can prevent shoulder strains; otherwise, perform tasks for no more than five minutes at a time. Invest in new tools Cushioned grips and grip handles can prevent wrist fatigue, as can hand tools that keep wrists straight to improve strength and reduce repetitive motion injuries. Long-handled tools and push mowers should be as tall as the person using them. Seek out tools that keep the body in natural positions to maximize efficiency. Even though gardening is viewed as a relaxing pastime, the work involved can be taxing on the body. Ergonomic tools and proper form can keep injuries at bay.
HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.
8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.
