PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL: The Commerce Department announced the reinstatement of a citizenship question on the 2020 census that has not been used since the 1950s. This comes as a response to a request from the Justice Department who claims to need the information to help prevent racial discrimination and protect minority voting rights while opponents say that it will cause immigrants to avoid taking the census fearing that the government could use the information to target them. How do you feel about decision to add this question to the census? •␣This is a targeted move designed to identify those who already feel vulnerable. • We need this information to get an accurate picture of our population. • It shouldn’t be an issue for anyone who is in the US legally. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Rumors of a change in the workplace could make you a mite uneasy about going ahead with implementing your ideas. Best advice: Ignore the talk and proceed as planned. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Everyone has an opinion on how to handle a recent business suggestion. Thank them for their advice. Then go ahead and follow your own fine instincts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) While home is your main focus this week, new issues in the workplace need your attention as well. Take things step by step. Pressures ease in time for weekend fun. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Be less rigid when handling a relationship problem. You might believe you’re in the right, but try to open your mind to the possibilities of facts you’re currently not aware of. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Leos and Leonas run at a hectic pace throughout much of the week. But by the weekend, the Lions’ Dens become a purrrfect place for you Fine Felines to relax in. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Change is favored early in the week. This should make it easier for you to reassess your plans for handling a troubling professional relationship. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A suggestion from a colleague could give your professional project that long-needed boost. Meanwhile, someone close to you still needs your emotional support. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before complying with a colleague’s request, check to see that the action benefits all, not just one person’s agenda. Continue firming up those travel plans. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your social life is on the upswing, and the only problem is deciding which invitations to accept. Enjoy yourself before settling down for some serious work next week. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) With your creative aspects on high, you might want to restart your work on that novel or painting you put aside. Your efforts will bring a surge in your self-esteem. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) While you’re generous with others, be sure you’re not overlooking your own needs. Take time to assess your situation and make adjustments where necessary. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Being applauded for your achievement is great. But watch out that you don’t start acting like a star. It could lose you valuable support with your next project. BORN THIS WEEK: Your strong belief in justice, along with your leadership qualities, help you protect the rights of others.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: • Trouble communicating or finding words. • Difficulty completing complex tasks. • Challenges with planning and organization. • Episodes of confusion and disorientation. • Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party. • Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis.

It’s a fact that you already know. A mammogram can find lumps in the breast long before they are found any other way. A mammorgram only takes minutes. If you are uninsured and 40-64 years old, it’s FREE. So, what’s stopping you from calling right now?

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy CANCER SCREENING During comprehensive twice-ayear dental checkups, the dentist and hygienist not only perform a professional cleaning and health assessment of the patient’s teeth and gums, but they also screen for signs of oral cancer. Also known as “mouth cancer,” these types of cancers include cancers of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx (throat). If not diagnosed and treated early, these cancers can be life-threatening. Because oral cancer rarely causes pain in its early stages, it is usually only detected by dental professionals, who can spot abnormal cell growth that looks like flat patches. A sore in the mouth that does not heal is the most common symptom of oral cancer. Your total health is always our concern at BATAVIA FAMILY

DENTAL. That’s why all new patient exams are so thorough, so we can establish a baseline against which we can measure your future oral profile and progress. And regular professional checkups make it possible to watch for developing concerns and address them while they are still small, before they can turn into something more serious. For an appointment for advanced, gentle dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances. P.S. Some oral cancers are not detected until they produce symptoms similar to those of a toothache.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I do not understand the hysteria over the measles outbreak. In my day, every kid had the measles and other childhood diseases, and all survived with strengthened immune systems. Today, young people have no natural defenses against diseases because their immune systems have been compromised by drugs. With the exception of smallpox and polio, childhood diseases are a rite of passage. -- B.W. ANSWER: In the days before vaccines, pretty much every kid did get the measles, but unfortunately, not all of them survived. Although measles death rates were already dropping, before the vaccine was available there were still hundreds of thousands of cases every year, with hundreds of deaths and thousands of cases of severe complications, such as encephalitis, an extremely serious inflammation of the brain that can have long-term repercussions. The vaccine reduced the death rate to essentially zero and the case rate to a few cases per year, mostly from international travelers. Over the decades, the measles vaccine has prevented many thousands of children from death and disability. People, including me, are worried about the measles outbreak because there are many more people now who, because of diseases like HIV and cancer, have immune systems that leave them susceptible to measles, a highly infectious disease. Children under 1 year cannot get the vaccine and the immunity they get from their mother’s immune system wanes over time. Thus, there are many people at high risk for measles in the population now. The measles vaccine strengthens, not weakens, the immune system, and provides lifelong immunity for nearly everybody who gets two doses. There are risks of the vaccine, but serious adverse effects from it are rare. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Have you ever heard of anyone being allergic or sensitive to newspaper print? I read the newspaper from front to back and like to know what the latest news is. I always seem to have burning eyes, itchy nose and some difficulty breathing. Is an allergy possible, and if so, how can I remedy it? -- J.L. ANSWER: It certainly is possible, and there have been some high-profile cases lately, including a Baltimore newspaper reporter. Most often, the chemical is from pine rosin, used in the printing process. An allergist can confirm this with skin testing. Avoiding the newpaper ink is the best solution, which may include simply washing your hands after reading the newspaper, or even using gloves. Worst case, many newspapers have electronic versions that can be read via handheld devices or your computer. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: We are regular readers of your column. At 72, I have fasting labs done every six months (metabolic and lipid panels and yearly vitamin D check). Some doctors say that having coffee in the morning before a blood draw is OK if you don’t use milk or sugar; other doctors say no coffee. What is the professional advice on this? -- D.B. ANSWER: Coffee or tea without milk or sugar does not interfere with the blood testing. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS Why replace bulbs two at a time? In an effort to promote the importance of changing headlight bulbs two at a time, Philips developed the “Change In Pairs” safety campaign, which aims to educate motorists about the dangers of dimming lights while promoting the many reasons that changing bulbs in pairs makes the road safer for all travelers. To support this safety initiative, Philips also packages its Upgrade Headlight Bulbs in pairs. Though replacing two headlight bulbs when only one is dimming may seem unwarranted, maintaining a consistent light output in both headlights makes the road safer for drivers, their passengers and oncoming motorists. When only one bulb is replaced, the resulting light output can be both unbalanced and unpredictable, providing inadequate lighting that can compromise driver visibility. In addition, oncoming motorists may experience difficulty seeing vehicles with just one headlight operating at full capacity, and some may even mistake oncoming cars and trucks for motorcycles, creating positioning issues for drivers on both sides of the yellow line.

The m any benef it s of aut om ot ive roof rack s Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instances, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

Keep a clean interior. New car ow ners typically maintain some strict rules w ith regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one w ants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become w ith regard to allow ing food and drinks into their cars, and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehic le. M aintain a clean interior w hether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. M uch like an impressive exterior leaves a lasting impression, a clean interior that has not succumb to coffee stains or muddy boots is more likely to impress buyers than a car w ith an interior that has seen better, cleaner days.

Clean the interior glass and mirrors. Dirty interior glass and mirrors make it difficult for drivers to see fellow motorists, so make removing any film buildup on such surfaces part of your routine vehicle maintenan ce.

Your How to save more for retirement after age 50 Whether it’s advice from their parents, a response to television ads urging viewers to save for retirement, or their own financial savvy, many of today’s young professionals recognize the importance of saving for retirement from the moment they receive their first paychecks. But men and women over 50 may not have been so practical, and many such professionals may feel a need to save more as their retirements draw ever closer. Saving for retirement might seem like a no-brainer, but the National Institute on Retirement Security notes that, in 2017, almost 40 million households in the United States had no retirement savings at all. In addition, the Employee Benefit Research Institute found that Americans have a retirement savings deficit of $4.3 trillion, meaning they have $4.3 trillion less in retirement savings than they should. Men and women over 50 who have retirement savings deficits may need to go beyond depositing more money in their retirement accounts in order to live comfortably and pay their bills in retirement. The following are a few simple ways to start saving more for retirement.

retirement, while others may keep working out of financial need. Others may simply love their jobs and want to keep going until their passion runs out. Regardless of the reason, working past the age of 65 allows men and women to keep earning and saving for retirement, while also delaying the first withdrawal from their retirement savings accounts.

• Redirect nonessential expenses into savings. Some retirement accounts, such as IRAs, are governed by deposit limits. But others, such as 401(k) retirement plans, have no such limits. Men and women can examine their spending habits in an effort to find areas where they can cut back on nonessential expenses, such as cable television subscriptions and dining out. Any money saved each month can then be redirected into savings and/or retirement accounts.

• Reconsider your current and future living situation. Housing costs are many people’s most considerable expense, and that won’t necessarily change in retirement. Even men and women who have paid off their mortgages may benefit by moving to a region with lower taxes or staying in the same area but downsizing to a smaller home where their taxes and utility bills will be lower. Adults who decide to move to more affordable areas or into smaller, less expensive homes can then redirect the money they are saving into interest-bearing retirement or savings accounts.

• Reconsider your retirement date. Deciding to work past the age of 65 is another way men and women over 50 can save more for retirement. Many professionals now continue working past the age of 65 for a variety of reasons. Some may suspect they’ll grow bored in

Many people begin saving for retirement the moment they cash their first professional paycheck. But even adults over the age of 50 sometimes feel a need to save more as their retirement dates draw closer, and there are many ways to do just that.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

Farfalle with Crabmeat, Asparagus, Scrambled Eggs, Garlic, and Herbs Makes 4 to 6 servings 1 pound farfalle 1⁄2 pound asparagus, trimmed and sliced diagonally, 1⁄4-inch thick 10 extra-large eggs 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 garlic clove, minced 1⁄4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving 2 tablespoons heavy cream 1⁄2 pound cooked lump crabmeat, picked over to remove any bits of shell or cartilage 1⁄4 cup finely chopped fresh chives 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh Italian parsley Freshly ground black pepper Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the farfalle and cook until al dente, following the manufacturer’s suggested cooking time. About 2 minutes before the pasta is done, add the asparagus. Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, beat the eggs with a fork or whisk until slightly frothy. Set aside. When the pasta and asparagus are done, drain and set aside. Immediately melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the pasta and asparagus and toss briefly to coat them with the butter mixture. Pour in the eggs, add 1⁄4 cup Parmesan and the cream, and stir and toss the mixture until the eggs just have begun to form moist curds, about 2 minutes. Add the crabmeat, chives and parsley and continue cooking and tossing until the eggs have formed more solid curds that cling to the farfalle, 1 to 2 minutes more. Serve immediately, passing grated Parmesan and black pepper for guests to add to taste.

By Chaz Goodman Volunteers of America Upstate New York (VOA) presented its highest honor, the Maud Booth award, to Penelope Pankow for her extraordinary commitment to the organization at the agency’s Donor and Volunteer Appreciation event that was held on Thursday, March 8th, during Volunteers of America Week, at Frontier Field. Named after Volunteers of America’s co-founder, the Maud Booth Award is reserved for individuals who have shown exemplary leadership, commitment, and service to the agency, its programs, and those served by VOA. In addition to serving on VOA’s Board of Directors for 9 years, Ms. Pankow has been an active supporter during her near decade of service. Ms. Pankow’s concern for the rising poverty rates in Rochester and a desire to help families and individuals in need drew her to volunteer with VOA. She first got involved working with VOA’s residential re-entry center for men and women leaving prison. “Giving people a hand up at a time when their lives can go dramatically in one direction or another matters greatly,” she says. Ms. Pankow has since served on the Board of Directors, including a term as Board Chair, co-chair of the CEO search committee, and chair of the Governance Committee. Ms. Pankow is a generous supporter of VOA’s programs which include: early education and summer camps for impoverished children, job readiness training for low income adults, and re-entry programming for incarcerated individuals. Each of these programs works to further the VOA mission to empower people in the community to rise out of poverty, move toward self-reliance, and reach their full potential. “I believe VOA is on the cusp of becoming much more prominently recognized in our community,” Ms. Pankow says. “As more people understand what we do, our ability to serve will grow.” A Rochester resident for 30 years, Ms. Pankow moved here from Los Angeles to work at Eastman Kodak before starting F. Oliver’s, her own culinary hospitality business. Others recognized at the event

Penelope Pankow at F. Oliver’s

include: Rochester City Police Investigator Otto Harnischfeger (Community Citizenship Award), Rochester City Firefighter Jason Ashton (Community Citizenship Award), Joanne Chada (Community Volunteer of the Year), and UniLink (Corporate Supporter of the Year). About Volunteers of America Upstate New York: Volunteers of America Upstate New York (VOA) is a local non-profit human service organization that serves more than 6,000 men, women and children annually in Rochester and throughout Upstate New York. The agency’s mission is to empower people in our community to rise out of poverty, move toward self-reliance, and reach their full potential. VOA offers a wide array of programming in four key areas: early childhood education; supportive housing for homeless and low income individuals and families; job readiness/workforce development services; and reentry programs for individuals who are or have been incarcerated. Volunteers of America Week is a celebration of the 122nd anniversary of the agency’s national founding on March 8th, 1896.

On Saturday, March 24th, the Town of Riga held its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Sanford Road Park. The sun was shining and the snow had melted so Egg Hunters from 1 to 10 years of age went onto the grass and into 2 huge straw piles to hunt for over 2,000 eggs and the “Special Eggs." The hunters also were treated to arts & crafts, face painting, airbrush tattoos, and caricatures! Thanks go out to the following organizations and individuals that made this event possible – Kohlman Farms, Marty Molinari and his members of the Churchville “LEO” Club, the Riga Highway Department, “Face Painter," Adrianna Wellin, Kathy & Cindy from Arlene’s

To the ignorant, emotional people ranting about leashing a pet, take time to find out why the pet is caged/leashed before accusing the owners of "animal cruelty," calling the police, ruining that person's life and possibly having their beloved pet taken away. Is the dog a beagle or husky perhaps? These breeds tend to

wander regardless of training. The owner loves their dog and is being responsible by leashing them so they don't wander into the road and get killed. Though I do see dogs of other breeds playing in the road, and someday a driver is not going to be able to stop in time! Fence in, or leash your wandering dogs if you care about them. It is not cruelty. It's common sense. A leashed puppy? Perhaps it is IN training? Think before you baselessly accuse. It's not all black and white.

I need to add my opinion about re-gifting. If you do not like the gift you are re-gifting, chances are the recipient will not like it either. One Christmas my friend, a Scotch drinker, received Irish Cream as an obvious regift. Needless to say we stopped exchanging after that. We asked around and gave it to someone who took it as a favor to us. Please think twice before regifting that disliked present to someone else. There is a reason you do not like it. Chances are the re-gifted recipient won't appreciate it either.

It is ludicrous that a child could be suspended for more than a year for flashing someone and rumor has it that children who posed a bomb threat to the school may end up with less than 2 months.

I have a certified dog through Therapy Dog International who went through 9 weeks of obedience classes and 9 weeks of therapy dog training and passed a locally administered test through Therapy Dog International. We work at a local grade school and Community Center with seniors so we are giving back to the same community that is charging us for a license! All other area towns waive the licensing fee for therapy dogs and some even offer free licenses if owners are seniors. Why does our town charge.....do they need the money that badly?

PREVENT DIY INJURIES Wear solid shoes that provide considerable traction during home improvements. A firm, reinforced toe is helpful as well. Should any items fall, they’ll be less likely to cause injury if your foot is encased in a protective boot or sturdy shoe. Soles that grip surfaces will help safeguard against slips and falls.

WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL Homeowners are discovering that architectural accents can go a long way toward improving both the look and value of their homes. When renovating a space, the term “millwork” may be mentioned by designers and contractors. While it might be a mystery to some, millwork can give rooms unique looks. Millwork refers to items traditionally made from raw lumber in a sawmill. Examples of millwork include crown molding, base trims, door frames, window casings, chair rails, and paneling. Cabinets may also classify as millwork.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Don’t be afraid to take risks. Successful women are not afraid to take risks. Many may have decided they don’t fit a specific mold and want to affect change. However, calculated risks are different from reckless decisions, and it is important to recognize the difference. A calculated risk may involve starting your own business after learning the ropes in a specific field and testing the waters. Reckless behavior would be opening that business with no relevant experience.
