American Red Cross Finger Lakes Chapter
Take Steps To Improve Your Retirement Confidence (NAPS)—A recent study by the Insured Retirement Institute found that only 25 percent of baby boomers believe they will have enough money in retirement and just 28 percent believe they did a good job financially preparing for their retirement years. This dismal view of their retirement prospects by so many aging Americans is concerning, but what is even more sobering is the study found that boomers are actually less satisfied with their finances than they were as recently as five years ago. In 2012, 41 percent of baby boomers believed they were doing a good job of financial preparation. This decline in retirement confidence has taken place in spite of healthy market conditions and rising interest rates for most retirees’ investments. Fortunately, the news doesn’t have to be so bad if seniors allow this news to serve as a wake-up call for them to take action. Here are five steps that experts say boomers can take to revisit their retirement plans now and fix things that have gone awry: 1. Reassess priorities. Take stock of your available resources and prioritize your needs vs. your wants, based on where your life is now and what is most important to you in the years ahead. 2. Raise cash. Consider options that may be available to you for boosting your savings, such as a part-time job or perhaps selling off some possessions you no longer need. 3. Generate interest. Re-evaluate where your money is sitting today and consider moving as much as you can out of cash and into interest-bearing accounts, which are paying depositors more than they have in several years. 4. Look for hidden assets. Inventory all your assets that might create cash flow, including those you may have overlooked in the past, such as a life insurance policy. A life insurance policy is your personal property and, if you no longer need or can afford it, you may be able to sell it for an immediate cash payment. 5. Leverage your house. If you own your home, consider a reverse mortgage or a home equity line of credit as a way to free up cash that you can use to pay off health care bills or other expenses. Of these five steps, the one that could produce the most immediate cash flow may be the sale of a life insurance policy, known as a life settlement. Most consumers who qualify for a life settlement are 70 or older and own a life insurance policy with a benefit of at least $100,000. For more information or for a free evaluation of your life insurance policy, go to www.LISA.org or call the LISA office at 888-985-0773. There are several things older Americans can do to improve their chances of a secure retirement.

Local Animal Support Organization to Build 1st Donation Drop Off Box in Dansville By Amanda Dudek otorcyclists defending helpless animals: the image couldn’t M contain more contrast and yet be more endearing. For Bikers Against Animal Neglect & Abuse founder Michael Wise, this vision has become his reality. It all started about two and a half years ago with Wise and his fiancé, Sherri. Wise, who always liked animals and has adopted dogs himself, remembers regularly seeing several photos posted on Facebook’s groups by people looking to rehome their pets. He says people would take these animals, but then, suddenly, photos would appear of the same pets looking for new homes once again. “The treatment of many of these animals upset me, and this triggered the thought, Why not start a group?” says Matthew Wise. “These animals can’t speak for themselves.” Having previously been a part of the motorcycle club industry, Wise decided to start a group on his own.
law says that if a dog is outside, it has to have water, food and shelter. Buffalo just passed a law saying that you cannot tether your dog outside for more than an hour in extreme temperatures above 90 degrees or below freezing. I wish that was the law across our state.”
Dan Campbell, Matthew Wise and Friend
Matthew Wise promotes this year’s 3rd Annual Motorcycle Run He called the group Bikers Against Animal Neglect & Abuse (B.A.A.N. & A.), a name which says it all. The group collects donations in support of local shelters and other animal groups. “At first it was really hard because not a lot of people wanted to donate,” confides Wise, explaining that he is not about taking people’s money. “The places we help need all kinds of things. Sheets, blankets, dog food and cat food, dog toys: things don’t have to be brand new. These places always need cleaning supplies, as well, such as bleach and laundry detergent.” Wise explained that his group started out seeking donations for Livingston County Dog Control and were able to help the organization out with lots of dog food. He says they prefer to help organizations because that way they are certain the help is going to the right place. The first year, B.A.A.N. & A. held its first motorcycle run, and it was very successful. They decided to hold the run for a second year, and this was successful, as well, so successful, in fact, that they had to add more areas. B.A.A.N. & A. grew to include two additional branches: one in Marion, Wayne County and the other in Canandaigua, Ontario County. In both the Wayne County branch, led by Dan Campbell, and the Ontario branch, led by Andrew Watson and his wife, B.A.A.N. & A. is supporting area shelters and rescues, including well-known Lollipop Farm. For example, Bikers Against Animal Neglect & Abuse was recently able to donate $240 worth of cat supplies to Hearthside Cats of Avon. “We do it all for free,” says Wise. “We deliver everything ourselves. 100% of everything we receive goes back to these animals. We do not use any of the money we raise for anything else, not even gas!” Wise explains that no group is too small to receive their help. “We often ask the smaller shelters for a wish list which shows everything they regularly use and everything they need.” When asked why he feels his group’s mission is so important, Matthew Wise says, “The animals can’t speak for themselves, and so many of them need a home. Many are abused. For example, I see dogs which have been left tied outside to trees, and unfortunately, sometimes law enforcement isn’t able to help.” Wise’s passion for animals is clear as he continues, “The
It is this passion that keeps Wise going, and he has no plans of slowing down. “We just raised money through a GoFundMe, and we are going to use it to buy dog beds for shelters which accept them,” says Wise. “It keeps growing by people being interested, contacting me, wanting to learn more about us.” Last week, Wise was on a radio station in Rochester. He was being interviewed about B.A.A.N. & A. and was asked about what they do and where they do it. Looking to the future, Wise says they plan to hold their third annual Motorcycle Run on August 25th. They have Bikers Against Animal Neglect & Abuse patches, stickers, shirts and hats for sale, also. “We are setting up our first Donation Drop Off Box at K’s Dog Training at the bottom of Stony Brook Hill on Route 36 in Dansville,” Wise shares excitedly. “We want to give people one more way to support animals in need. We usually pick up people’s donations ourselves and are still happy to do so. Please contact us any time if you have donations, would like to help in any way or if you would like more information.” Wise adds that it is also in his personal plans to move to North Carolina, and when he does, he will hand over ownership of Bikers Against Animal Neglect & Abuse of New York to Dan Campbell. This doesn’t mean the end of helping animals for Matthew Wise, however. He says he will start a new branch in North Carolina, in hopes that the movement he started will continue to grow beyond the area. “We are always looking for members,” says Wise. “All are welcome. You don’t have to have a motorcycle to join in and help! For more information, contact Matthew Wise (Livingston & Steuben Counties) at 585-519-1931, Dan Campbell (Wayne County) at 585-3308878 or Andrew Watson (Ontario County) at 520-873-7568. CONFRONTING DEATH When suddenly confronted with the death of a loved one, it is necessary to go through the grieving process, which doesn’t follow a fixed pattern. As such, each person must grieve in his or her own way and in his or her own time. There is no special time on the calendar when we can point and say that grief is over. Grief is also work, in that people must “work through” their grief, which can be a painful process. Grief can hurt as much, or more, than a physical wound. Fortunately, wounds heal. In the end, we do not “get over” the death of a loved one. We learn to live with the fact of his or her death. Grieving is an intensely emotional time and is often characterized by confusion, forgetting the “little things” occurring at this time, and fear connected with facing life without the person lost. That is why it is important to be patient and understanding. Just being present for support can help. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Could Abdominal Migraine Cause Cyclic Vomiting?
--DEAR DR. ROACH: My son started having gastrointestinal problems in high school. Approximately three years ago, they became so intense that he couldn’t work. Last May, he finally had surgery for gastric reflux. This helped with the persistent vomiting, but he is still experiencing intractable nausea. After a year of tests and trials of every anti-nausea medication known, he finally was told that he has cyclic vomiting syndrome. He also was told, basically, “We don’t know how to treat it.” He currently is on a trial of a tricyclic antidepressant, but wasn’t given much hope that it would help. Could you suggest any possible treatment? He is only 28, and I can’t imagine him living with this and not being able to work or participate in life forever after. -- M.S. ANSWER: Cyclic vomiting syndrome is best described in children, but is certainly described in adults. It is called “cyclic” because there are periods of multiple vomiting episodes (lasting from one day to a week) interspersed with periods of completely normal health. Children have 12 cycles per year on average, while adults have four. CVS has been associated with migraine headaches, and treatment for migraines is sometimes successful in treating CVS, so it’s possible CVS represents a variant of abdominal migraine. CVS is a difficult diagnosis to make, as it can be easily confused with other causes of recurrent vomiting. Both children and adults often go a long time with incorrect diagnoses, sometimes getting surgeries, like your son did. Treatment should be administered by a clinician experienced in this condition, and unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case with your son. In one series, 3 in 17 adults with CVS had a complete response to tricyclic antidepressants, but 13 had at least some response. So I would hold out more than just a little hope for some benefit. Other medications that have been tried include sumatriptan (normally used for migraine), ketorolac (a powerful anti-inflammatory medicine) and prochlorperazine (usually used for nausea, and I’m sure your son would have tried it). I would strongly suggest you contact the Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association to get more information and suggestions for an expert in your area, at www.cvsaonline.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have noticed that the medical profession uses a number of standard words in different ways. For example, “negative” is usually good, and “positive” often is bad news. -- N.M.G. ANSWER: It’s true that we in medicine use words differently than they are used conversationally. “Negative” and “positive” are examples: We would like the biopsy to be negative for cancer, and if the HIV test is positive, that’s not good. Doctors also use the word “complaint” to describe the patient’s chief concern; it’s not that we think people are being annoying. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Can skim milk or oat bran cause gas? -- J.R. ANSWER: Both certainly can cause gas. Skim milk contains the milk sugar lactose, to which many people are intolerant. In mild cases, it causes some gas; severe cases can cause diarrhea. Oat bran is a good fiber source, and all good sources of fiber can cause gas, especially if taken in amounts that are greater than the person is used to. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks. Panic attacks occur suddenly and are periods of intense fear that may include palpitations, pounding heartbeat and/or accelerated heart rate. People in the midst of a panic attack may also experience shortness of breath or feel as though they are choking or being smothered. Feelings of impending doom may also occur during a panic attack. Anxiety disorders, including panic disorders, may be caused by the interaction of certain genetic and environmental factors. These factors include behavioral inhibition in childhood, exposure to stressful life events in childhood and adulthood, anxiety disorders in close biological relatives and a parental history of mental disorders. Anxiety disorders are generally treated with psychotherapy or medication, or a combination of both.

Professional Hearing Solutions
Who We Are: For 15 years, Professional Hearing Solutions has been owned and operated by Dr. Christine Stein, an audiologist with over 25 years’ experience. Professional Hearing Solutions has been helping neighbors assist and maintain their hearing health in the communities surrounding Victor and Newark for the past 15 years.
What We Do: We provide a relaxed, comfortable, professional environment to evaluate our patients’ hearing issues and help explore the solutions available to them. Hearing devices have evolved considerably from basic technology models resembling a gob of silly putty. Aids are no longer obvious, uncomfortable or low tech. Today’s hearing devices can be smart technology, small and nearly invisible.
We’re Unique: • We service multiple areas, including Monroe,
Ontario and Wayne Counties. • We provide comprehensive, diagnostic hearing tests
and rehabilitation. •∑ We offer technology from a wide variety of manufacturers so that we can match you with the best solution for your unique hearing health needs. •∑ Our technology includes a 3-year repair and loss warranty, 3-year battery supply if needed and 5 years of unlimited hearing device service and office visits with us.
What’s New:
is incredible! Some hearing devices can connect directly to other devices, such as cellphones, televisions and tablets, via Bluetooth technology. The hearing aids can be programmed depending on your environment, remember locations and switch programs automatically, translate languages (yeah, that’s right!) and even be adjusted remotely from your Audiologist’s office wherever you are.
You May Not Know: Hearing devices require routine maintenance and may need adjustment. Hearing devices are regularly exposed to environmental debris, moisture, hair, dead skin cells and earwax. It is important to have them cleaned and checked every three months as scheduled and whenever there are any changes or concerns.

You should insist on clarifications now, rather than deal with problems that might arise later. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your energy levels might be ebbing a bit. But that’s no excuse for taking catnaps when you could be working on those unfinished tasks. There’ll be time to curl up and relax by week’s end. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to get those ideas out of your head and into a readable format if you hope to have them turned into something doable. A good friend is ready with worthwhile advice. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Careful -- you might be stepping into dangerous territory if you decide to “exaggerate” the facts too much. Remember: The truth speaks for itself and needs no embellishment. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Although your workplace successes have earned you many admirers, there are some colleagues who are not among them. Be careful how you proceed with your new project. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might have to go into great detail to explain why you’re currently reluctant to make changes to an already prepared plan. Be sure you have all the facts to back yourself up. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Travel plans might still be uncertain. But instead of getting upset about the delay, open yourself up to other possibilities, and begin checking out some alternative destinations. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Changing conditions might require you to alter some of your plans. While you might be agreeable to this, be prepared with explanations for those who do not want changes made. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Although you might have to deal with some detractors who aren’t too kind in their critiques, you gain points when you’re willing to stand up and defend your work. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for creating a warm and loving environment between yourself and others. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
