DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.
LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Freedom of experimentation: Although chain restaurants may have to meet approval from administrative boards and marketing departments before they can introduce new fare, independently owned restaurants can let their diners decide which foods remain on the menu and even adapt to community trends. Local restaurants may take pride in serving cultural or regional foods.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I understand that the overuse of antibiotics can harm the good bacteria in the intestinal tract, as well as the bad. While I don’t feel that I am abusing antibiotics, I have been prescribed two courses in the past five years. I wonder what action can be taken to try to ensure that balance in my gut is restored. -- M.L. ANSWER: We are just beginning to understand the beneficial effect of bacteria living in our intestine, and there is preliminary evidence that antibiotics might have adverse long-term effects due to loss of healthy bacteria. I think the most important message from this is to use antibiotics as little as possible, but two courses in five years is certainly modest. The use of probiotics (healthy bacteria) might help prevent growth of harmful bacteria, improve the immune system, reduce pain and improve the function of the gut lining. I don’t think probiotics are necessary after the occasional course of antibiotics. However, it is reasonable to consider probiotics in some situations, including in people with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), in cases of infectious diarrhea and perhaps in people with irritable bowel syndrome. Commercial probiotics are expensive, not FDA-approved and aren’t proven to treat or cure any disease as of yet. Yogurt often is recommended, but not all yogurt contains live healthy bacteria. Even in the ones that do, many of the bacteria are killed by our stomach acid. Other fermented dairy products, such as kefir, have higher concentrations of bacteria. Both of these might be problematic in people with lactose intolerance (which can happen to anyone temporarily after a bout of infectious diarrhea) *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My domestic partner’s body heat is always very warm. We keep our home at 75 degrees F, and she complains that the house is too hot. Even at night when I touch her, I can feel the heat on her body. What do you think might be causing this to happen? Is this normal? She is in her mid-60s. -- C.B. ANSWER: It is not at all abnormal for people to have different temperatures at which they feel comfortable, and 75 degrees F is on the warm side of comfort for many. One way that our bodies regulate temperature is through blood flow to the extremities. When the blood vessels are open, the person will feel quite warm to the touch, and when trying to conserve heat, the skin feels cold and clammy. If she is really bothered by it, it might be worth thinking about two common medical issues: hyperthyroidism and vasomotor instability of menopause. In hyperthyroidism, the entire metabolism is enhanced, so the person is warm all the time. A simple blood test can confirm this diagnosis. In a woman in her 60s, it is common to have periods of vasomotor instability, usually called hot flashes. In these, the blood vessels open up and the woman becomes uncomfortably hot for a few minutes. It is possible that one of these could be happening for your partner. However, sometimes variations in normal physiology can fool the physician into thinking there is a problem. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. State bat, eat many thousands of insects, consuming 20-50% of their weight in insects each night, and are particularly useful for eliminating large numbers of mosquitoes each year. In fact, all nine species of bats are incredibly effective, natural insect pest control. In other parts of the world, bats eat a wider variety of food, including nectar, which makes bats important pollinators, as well. Only three species, out of approximately 1,300 currently identified species of bats, eat blood and are known as vampire bats. These species are found in Mexico and Central and South America. These species are the Common Vampire Bat (Desmodus rotundus), the Hairylegged Vampire Bat (Diphylla ecaudata) and the White-winged Vampire Bat (Diaemus youngi). Notice they eat blood; they do not suck blood. These bats make a tiny incision in another animal, particularly birds and cattle, and they lap the blood droplets that accumulate on this spot. These bat-made incisions are so small that most animals do not seem to notice them. After Liz Thompson’s interesting and informative presentation, during and after which she answered several questions, children were invited to stay and participate in a batthemed craft: making bat masks. The entire event was enjoyable, and there is still more to come. At the end of November, the Chip Holt Nature Center will host a holiday wreathmaking event, with registration costing only $8 per person for materials. After this, the year will start again, and featured events will include such things as studying birds and other lake area wildlife, learning about composting and gardening and participating in fishing clinics.

The Chip Holt Nature Center, located in Vitale Park of Lakeville, is housed in a modest building, but don’t let its size fool you. The Center packs a big punch when it comes to educational impact in local communities. On the banks of Conesus Lake, Vitale Park provides the Center with ample subject matter with which to accomplish its tripartite mission as stated: “to provide interactive educational programs and recreational opportunities for present and future generations, to promote ecological stewardship for Conesus Lake and its watershed and to increase awareness and appreciation for the natural resources of the Finger Lakes.” Throughout the year, the Center provides monthly opportunities, appropriate to the season, to interact with and learn about nature. What could be a more fitting subject for the month of October than bats? On the evening of Friday, October 26th, guest Liz Thompson, bat expert and On-Site Programs Specialist with the Buffalo Zoo, visited the Chip Holt Nature Center to give an informational presentation on bats, the world’s only flying mammals. The presentation was open to the public and free of charge, and the seats available were filled with interested visitors across the age spectrum. Liz Thompson is a long-time bat enthusiast who has observed many kinds of bats in her travels, and she had several slide photographs as well as much information and many anecdotes to share with her audience. Nine species of bats live in New York State: Northern Bats, Little Brown Bats, Indiana Bats, Eastern Pipistrelles, Big Brown Bats, Small-footed Bats, Big Brown Bats, Hoary Bats and Silver-haired Bats. Far from the blood-sucking monsters they are commonly portrayed to be, all of New York’s bat species are insectivores. Species such as the Small Brown Bat, the most common New York

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. TIME AND EXPENSE By planning ahead, consumers can reduce some of the expense involved with conducting a funeral. Waiting until the time of need to make important choices forces the family of the deceased to make funeral spending decisions while consumed by grief and short on time. As a result, they are not in any mood to comparison shop for the most appropriate services and the best prices. This is not the shopping behavior that most consumers exhibit while making other significant purchases. With this in mind, individuals are encouraged to take advantage of our policy of providing an itemized list of our products and services while they have the time and temperament to preplan a funeral. If your wishes are unknown when you die, your loved ones will be faced with making difficult decisions at a trying time. Will they know if you wish to be buried or cremated? Will they agree on an open or closed casket? Will they agree on how much to spend? Confusion and disagreements are common occurrences when there is no plan to follow. You can avoid this by leaving behind a plan. To learn more about preplanning a funeral, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time’ is like saying, ‘I don’t want to.’ ~ Lao Tzu

10 early signs of Alzheimer’s disease Change plays a big role in the aging process. As adults age, both their minds and bodies undergo changes. The changes associated with aging are not uniform. Some people may experience small changes as they inch toward and ultimately pass retirement age, while others may undergo changes that affect nearly every aspect of their lives. Cognitive decline is the type of age-related change that can have a dramatic impact on a person’s life, affecting his or her ability to live independently. A general term used to describe symptoms associated with a decline in memory or thinking skills such as judgment and reasoning, dementia is often mistaken as a normal part of aging. However, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America notes that dementia-related illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease, are not a normal part of aging. Because many people associate memory loss with aging, they may be compelled to accept some of the early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s as mere byproducts of growing older. However, the Alzheimer’s Association urges men 5. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep your feelings to yourself as you work through an awkward circumstance. Complaining is useless, and also unwise since your words could come back to haunt you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A sudden flash of Bovine practicality shows you how you might be able to turn your artistic pursuits into a profitable venture. A spouse or partner offers some sage advice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be prepared with several “Plan Bs” that you might have to use as backups just in case you encounter some troublesome complications with your carefully constructed schedule. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might think you’ll never have a free moment again with the demands of the workplace piling on. Cheer up. The pressure eases as holiday time nears. An old friend brings good news. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine pride might make it difficult to offer an apology to a co-worker you unintentionally offended. But a quick and sincere “I’m sorry” could prevent problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to tackle those backed-up chores that have kept you from moving into other, potentially more worthwhile projects. A personal matter needs your attention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually have no problem rushing to the defense of someone you perceive as being treated unjustly. But perceptions could be deceiving this week. Check the facts before you act. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before you point fingers at who might be to blame for the unexpected change in your plans, take a few moments to reflect on how this turn of events might be a blessing in disguise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You seek out advice in the first part of the week. But be careful not to let counsel from others overshadow your own sense of perception. Things become clearer by the week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The trusted colleagues you relied on earlier continue to offer support with your project. But you take more control, and by the week’s end, you should be in full command. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Rely on your practical side while exploring investment possibilities. Caution is still your watchword in these matters. Your social life takes a gratifying turn by the week’s end. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An already confusing situation appears to grow murkier during the first part of the week. But it all starts to clear by the week’s end. Plan to spend the weekend with someone special. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a passion for life that inspires others to follow your example. You could be a motivational speaker. I recently found ripped up pieces of paper on one of my town's back roads. I was surprised to find they were seemingly diary pages! And they were dated just a couple of weeks ago. Let's just say they made me cry. It was a poetic love letter expressing one’s feelings for someone else. It was beautifully composed, with so much heartache in it. I am hoping the writer will see this. If you do, please contact me at wheniamold260@gmail.com. I want to know your story. Thank you for letting me realize there are many triumphs, heartaches and breaks. But

there is also hope. Hope and redemption. I recently submitted a request to Give & Take for a small fridge for our church’s Youth Ministry room. Within a week I had received two offers! I am blessed by the generosity of these two individuals but also by the Penny Saver’s commitment to publishing this wonderful and helpful feature! Hats off to Livingston County Pizza on Rochester Street in Avon. Your pizza is wonderful. Your service is excellent. Keep up the good work! Diane
people "that's just what toddlers do". No, it's what terrible parents of toddlers do. People were removing their hearing aids because of you. People were leaving the store because of you. If you're not going to teach your child to behave properly, leave him at home. Why do so many people feel it is OK to pull into oncoming traffic just because something is blocking their lane? I'm sorry that the delivery truck or lawn service is parked on your side, but that means you need to STOP and wait for me to pass before you proceed to drive around.

To the individual complaining about farmers spreading manure, New York State has right-to-farm laws. If you do not like the smells associated with agriculture, you should move to the city. Also, the world does not revolve around you and your schedule; farmers are not going to wait until it is 90 degrees to do a task that needs to get done. You come here from [another country] because you can receive a free wheelchair for

Thank you so much for my relatives, friends and neighbors! You have all helped me out so much! Thank you to Patrick Kelly, Rory Hoskins, Brenda and Chuck Ferugie, Mary McDonald, Frankie Lapoma, Ronald Wall, Dominic, Jeff Hayes, Fred Webb and Mike Cuozzo and Bill Coffey. God Bless You! Patty Kelly
A few days ago I was in Walmart in Batavia, not having any success finding what I needed. Went to Customer
Service; the lady said this young man may be able to help you. (wish I could remember his name). He had a hand-held gadget and said, "Follow me." Eureka! Found all the items I was looking for! What a contrast to the woman who was checking me out in a store that is closing soon no eye contact; she was carrying on a conversation with a coworker.
your child; something that would have cost many thousands of dollars in [your country]. You live in a 3-bedroom subsidized housing apartment with a utility allowance deducted from the rent. Ramps were added to your building for easy wheelchair access. However, out front of your apartment you fly [your country's] flag. Pretty ungrateful aren't you?
mulch for the past two years, never plant a flower; never wash the exterior windows, paid to have a flunky company wash the exterior of the building (but not the windows!) which left stains ALL over the siding....a mess which no one has ever addressed. One picnic table for 32 residents, no shaded area for senior citizens to sit; no chairs, No nothing! Wake up.
With 60 new apartments going up next door that offer free air conditioning, free laundry facilities, free flat screen TV, free basic cable, free microwave ovens, and all utilities free, I would be sprucing up this complex before you lose all of your good tenants. Instead, you raise the price of one load of laundry to $4.00; never mulch these grounds even though the maintenance man has prepared all trees and shrubs for
To the driver in the car who nearly rear-ended me, then proceeded to "shoot" me "finger guns," tailgate me, then gunned it and flipped me off once I turned to [local store], yeah, I was the young girl in the other car. Sad to see grown men act like children. Actually, a child would have more decency. Sorry you were in such a rush. I actually commend you for at least not beeping at me!
While shopping at Aldi's a couple of weeks ago a very generous lady behind me paid for my groceries. Thanks again!
