A National Award is Earned by Dr. Sandro R. Popelka DDS, MPH, MAGD The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that Sandro R. Popelka, DDS, MPH, MAGD, of Canandaigua, NY, received the association’s Mastership Award during the AGD 2016 annual meeting, which took place July 14 to 17 in Boston, MA. The Mastership Award is the AGD’s highest honor and one of the most respected designations within the profession. To earn this award, Dr. Popelka completed 1,100 hours of dental continuing education. As a Mastership Award recipient, Dr. Popelka joins more than 2,300 active AGD Masters who have gone above and beyond the basic requirements to care for their patient’s oral health. “This award requires an extraordinary amount of time and effort,” says AGD Immediate Past President W. Mark Donald, DMD, MAGD. “Dr. Popelka should be commended for his unflagging commitment to continuing education, which allows him to provide the best possible dental care and oral health education to his patients.” Dr. Popelka graduated from University of Rochester in 2005 and currently practices dentistry in Canandaigua. He and his wife, Anna, have 3 children, Giannina, Adriano, and Marcello.

Today’s digital world has given rise to fast, stinted communications. According to the Pew Research Center, texting is the most widely used smartphone app, with 97 percent of Americans using it at least once a day. Across the globe, 8.3 trillion text messages are sent each year. That translates to roughly 16 million messages per minute. In addition to text messaging, social media posts are generally concise and short on depth. The written form of communication has changed dramatically in the last decade, as letter-writing and other forms of prose have all but faded away. But come Valentine’s Day, it can be special to dust off that pen and paper to express oneself via the written word in the name of love. Love letters are cherished keepsakes that can be kept for years. Such couples can illustrate a couple’s present-day love for one another and shed insight on their relationship years later. Here are some steps for writing a romantic love letter or note. • Jot down ideas and inspiration. Make a list of attributes and qualities in a spouse or romantic interest that you would like to highlight. Write down phrases and terms that come to mind. These words can serve as the foundation for the letter. • Categorize your thoughts into three areas. Jot down things that you like and love about the person, things that the person may do for you or your family that you appreciate, and various memories from throughout the years. • Write what you know. Do not feel pressured to make this letter more complicated than it has to be. The words will come when you write from the heart. While you can use other letters to spur ideas, do not lose your voice or try to mimic someone else’s work. • Make the letter personal and specific. Small details are important and make love letters more meaningful. Such details illustrate to a significant other that this letter was specifically written with them in mind. • Disregard length. The letter does not have to be a certain length. Whether it is a paragraph or several pages, the letter will be a successs if it says what you want to express. It doesn’t have to be long if that’s not your style. Writing a love letter can be a wonderful way to express romantic sentiments this Valentine’s Day.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Statins Can Cause Loss of Memory DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been taking Lipitor for high cholesterol. Lately, my pharmacist said that all statins can cause memory loss. I hesitate to stop taking Lipitor, but I don’t want this side effect. Please advise. -- P.C. ANSWER: Your pharmacist is quite right that some users of statins can have the unwanted side effect of memory loss. This is quite variable: Some people never get this effect, and it can be quite severe in a few. It appears to be reversible in the majority of people who get it. I wouldn’t recommend stopping unless you are having the side effect. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have chronic constipation, and have had it most of my life. I have used most of the bulking (husk) things that are out there. Nothing works. Years ago, I went to my doctor, and he said that I could take MiraLAX and use it for the rest of my life. It has worked! Now my new doctor wants me off of it, and wants me to incorporate fiber into my diet. I already do this. Plus I drink a lot of water. I start my day with a 24 ounces of water every morning before anything else. Is there anything wrong with taking MiraLAX every day? I do not take the full dose. -- V.B. ANSWER: While I recommend non-drug treatments, such as increased water intake, high-fiber diet and exercise as treatment for constipation, that doesn’t work for everybody. In that case, using a medication as recommended by your doctor makes sense. Polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX) is a generally safe treatment that works by increasing fluid in the bowel. It’s a good idea to use it as little as is needed to keep the stool from getting uncomfortably hard. READERS: The booklet on constipation explains this common disorder and its treatments. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 504W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Have you ever heard of someone with sleep apnea outgrowing the need of a breathing aid, such as CPAP? -- G.S. ANSWER: Most cases of sleep apnea are due to obstruction of the airway, caused by the relaxation of muscles in the back of the throat. Excess weight and obesity are the major risk factors for sleep apnea, but it can happen in normal-weight people. It is more common in older people, and men are at higher risk than women. Almost any condition can go away by itself, but in nearly every case of obstructive sleep apnea getting better without a specific treatment that I have seen, it has been associated with significant weight loss. It doesn’t have to be extreme weight loss. Since alcohol can make sleep apnea worse, stopping alcohol occasionally is enough to get it under control. I also recently mentioned singing exercises as a therapy for OSA, in addition to oral devices, CPAP or BiPAP devices, and surgery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. © 2017 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

What is a silent stroke? The brain is a complex organ responsible for controlling many different bodily functions. When working at optimal capacity, the brain is a wonder to behold. When illness or trauma affects the brain, various parts of the body may not work as they should. One of the more devastating things that can affect the brain is stroke. Stroke describes a sudden stoppage of blood from reaching the brain. Harvard Medical School states that if a large number of brain cells are starved of blood supply, they can die. With their demise, a person’s memory and ability to speak and move can be compromised. While many strokes come on suddenly, certain factors may indicate a person is at risk. Such factors may include prior heart attacks, genetics, high blood pressure, smoking, or a prior stroke. However, in a particular type of stroke - a “silent stroke” - symptoms are far more subtle and difficult to spot. Silent cerebral infarction, often referred to as “SCI” or “silent stroke,” is a brain injury likely caused by a blood clot interrupting blood flow to the brain, offers the American Stroke Association. Silent strokes increase risk for other strokes and can be a sign of progressive brain damage. A silent stroke is typically only noticed as a side component of an MRI of the brain. Many times patients do not recall having a stroke and never felt any symptoms. Silent strokes should not be mistaken for mini-strokes. Mini-stroke is a brief but discrete and memorable event, with symptoms appearing for a few minutes or a few hours. According to a study on silent stroke titled “Functional and Cognitive Consequences of Silent Stroke Discovered Using Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging in an Elderly Population” and published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society, silent strokes are quite common and can have serious consequences. Researchers have found that silent stroke is associated with impairments in tests of cognitive function rather than movement-oriented performance tests like rising from a chair. Almost 50 percent of studied silent

strokes affected frontal circuit components of the brain, such as the frontal cortex, basal ganglia and thalamus. Lesions in these brain structures compromised executive functions and were related to vascular dementia. Another study showed associations between silent stroke and visual field deficits, weakness in walking on heels, history of memory loss, migraines, and lower scores in cognitive function tests. The “silent” part of a silent stroke also refers to the areas of the brain that the stroke affects. Experts at Harvard Medical School explain that, during a silent stroke, an interruption in blood flow destroys areas of cells in a part of the brain that is “silent,” meaning that it doesn’t control any vital functions. Researchers say that, over time, the damage from silent strokes can accumulate, leading to more and more problems with memory. Collectively, silent strokes become silent no longer. There are certain ways to reduce the risk of any type of stroke. These include: · managing high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels · quitting smoking · reducing the risk of diabetes and effectively treat the condition if it is present · losing weight to prevent obesity · exercising and avoid a sedentary lifestyle · taking a low-dose aspirin or a drug that prevents blood clots. Silent strokes largely go unrecognized but can lead to significant brain injury. Getting the facts can help men and women reduce their risk for silent stroke.

Fairport-Perinton Chamber Networks with Monthly Coffee By Diane McClure Networking is a social process to make businesses and professionals visible. When creativity is added, participants become enthusiastic! Have you heard of a progressive party being brought into the business world? The Fairport-Perinton Chamber members have had this experience. Chamber President Paul West stated, “Our Chamber hosts a monthly informal coffee. The venue changes monthly, as we move around to support our local business members and to acquaint professionals doing business in Fairport, Perinton, Egypt, and Bushnell’s Basin with one another and local business resources.” Ellen Reynolds, Chamber Events Chair added, “These monthly coffees also provide the opportunity for non-members to attend, as well as members, to check out the Chamber experience.” Member Ashby Tax & Consulting, LLC, of 1157 Fairport Road, thought that their office building would be of interest to the Coffee attendees, so they hosted an event, allowing attendees to personally experience what makes a building “green,” through a progressive breakfast. Ashby Tax & Consulting created Chamber member enthusiasm! The Chamber experienced record attendance at their progressive breakfast event. The attendees toured the office building, meeting business neighbors and hearing their stories of benefits from working in a “green” office building. Chamber member Ramona Stein, owner of Sounds for Life, stated, “It was a great event and very well attended! I enjoyed connecting with so many members in one setting and it was a great opportunity to learn†about all of the businesses that operate under one roof. The building story dates back to 1956. Cosmo Viola started a tradition of quality building standards in the Rochester, New York area. His vision for new and innovative ideas allowed him to build what most people thought could not be accomplished. His pride and success have been carried down through his entire family. Cosmo built the Perinton Professional Building, 1157 Fairport Road, in 1966. It was a state-of-the art building at the time. One of his sons, Daniel Viola, President of Viola Homes and Renewable Rochester, continues with his father’s vision. Dan believes in being a true craftsman, so when it was time to renovate this

The lumber was recycled from the old building, the original slate floor his father laid still remains and solar panels were installed from solar contractor, Renewable Rochester. Dan is a LEED AP, who in collaboration with Viola Storage, has designed and project managed new home construction and commercial building development. The six tenants in the “green” Perinton Professional Building include: Dentist, M.S. Mayer, DMD; Eyes on Rochester; Ashby Tax & Consulting; Fairport Chiropractic; R.W. Lloyd Financial; Upstate Alarm. Donna Favitta, Operations Manager at Ashby Tax & Consulting stated, “Our ability to connect with small businesses through the Chamber has provided a great opportunity for networking and referrals. We are delighted to start our 2nd year as a Chamber member. The services provided by the Chamber are cutting edge and most helpful to small businesses. Ashby Tax & Consulting highly recommends active participation in the Chamber, if you have business interests in Fairport, Perinton, Egypt, or Bushnell’s Basin.” Whether you are a member or just an interested party, plan to attend upcoming Chamber events, where business networking is fun! Even if you have preplanned your funeral and drawn up both a living will and a standard will, you still may want to create a “durable power of attorney for healthcare.” This document enables you to assign a person to make important medical decisions for you if you are unable to do so for yourself. Also known as an “advanced healthcare directive,” this legal form necessitates that you appoint an agent who shares your medical treatment philosophy and values. It may also be a good idea to appoint an alternate agent. Your preferences should be discussed with the person(s) whom you appoint to ensure that he or she is comfortable making medical decisions on your behalf. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME hopes that you found this topic to be both interesting and informative. When planning ahead, consider preneed options. Predetermining your commemoration event alleviates those left behind from having to make those difficult decisions while grieving. During the week of Christmas we received a surprise in the mail! A Christmas card from Valley Fuel Company that included a note “A gift of $$ has been applied to your account by an anonymous donor.” We would like to send a big thank you out to the anonymous donor! It is good to know there are so many wonderful people in our world. Dick & Yvonne Struble I would like to thank everyone who helped in any way when my grandson Kyle Halstead was in an accident. Thanks to all your prayers, he is home now and doing better every day. I can never express how much gratitude I feel, even for kind words spoken. Our lives will never be the same and it gives me great solace to know there are so many kindhearted and caring people. It is a miracle that he is still alive. alive, all the doctors, nurses, therapists and so many prayers from people everywhere. God bless you all. The greatest gift is life itself. Kyle’s Grandma Onolee Thank you to the Avon Central School District Staff and Community members, especially East Avon Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, who made this year’s Christmas program so successful! We delivered gifts to over 30 children and their families. It is amazing to be connected to a special place like Avon that cares so deeply for the wellbeing of the community. It is with great optimism and joy to know that a community can band together for the greater good and be a special light to many children and families who are struggling. Thank you for all you do and Happy New Year! (-On behalf of many children and their families) You are always there when and if we need you. Thank you especially to Dispatcher Amanda Schultz and Deputy Moran. My mother’s vehicle was hit while she was parked at her apartment and Dispatcher Shultz sent Deputy Moran to take the report. My mother and I thank you greatly. Aprile and her Mom Linda

God. I suppose kisses under mistletoe at Christmas time is blasphemy in your eyes too?
Recently I went to a local liquor store to buy a certain bottle of wine. The clerk began a rant - insignificant wine from a minor winery, etc. After a few minutes of this rudeness I left. There was another local liquor store where the lady said, Oh I’m sorry we don’t carry that but I can try to get it for you. Guess where I’ll go next time?! I’ve been going to the Lima Save-A-Lot for many years, and will be sorry to see them go. To the reader who posted the article about smashing wedding cake in each other’s face...are you that prudish to even write that? First of all it’s not a “relatively new” custom. I am in my 50’s and I’ve seen this at almost every wedding I’ve been to as far back as I can remember. Cheer up and have a little fun. Smashing a little cake in the face of your new bride/groom is NOT breaking a solemn vow in the eyes of
On my way to work I am caught behind the same bus waiting for two children coming from the same house. The bus stops at the same time each day, 6:40 am. Most days the children are not waiting at the end of the driveway, which is longer than a football field and a half from their door to their stop. As soon as they open the door the bus driver puts his flashers on. Then the children walk down their long driveway, which holds all traffic up for at least 5-8 minutes each morning. Kids (and parents) have your children at the bus stop on time! Drivers of all busses, if the kids are not at their stop at the designated time then drive on. The next time you’re in a grocery store checkout line and you’re asked if you’d like to donate to feed the hungry, please don’t say “no thank you”. You’re not being offered something especially for you. You’re being asked to feed hungry children in and around the community. Say “not at this time” or simply “no”. No thank you? Come on.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.
