SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Prepare a familiar dish. Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners when they were children. But holiday hosts can make things easy on themselves by choosing dishes they’ve made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely won’t require as much time to prepare.

ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS?

Fri., Nov. 16th • 7pm Sat., Nov. 17th • 7pm Sun., Nov. 18th • 2pm

The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact.

Admission $5 Senior Citizens (65+) and children 4 & under free.

Presale tickets available: see a cast or crew member for details! Produced by special arrangement with Playscript, Inc. www.playscripts.com

While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

On "Halloween Nite" the Town of Riga Recreation Department along with the Churchville Lions Club, hosted their annual Halloween Parade to provide the community's young "Trick or Treaters" a safe environment in which to

participate. The parade started at the Churchville Commons and was led up Main Street by the Churchville Fire Department's fire truck and the Churchville Fire Police provided safe passage to the Church Lodge in Churchville Park. Once there the youngsters were treated to a beautifully decorated building where apples, cider, donuts, and of course bags of candy were served. A costume contest was also held. All involved were thrilled that the ghoulish characters were able to participate in a safe and secure environment. HUGE “Thank

You’s” go out to the following people and organizations that continue to make this event memorable year after year…Lions Ruth Stewart, Lucy Hackett, the Riga Recreation Dept., Churchville Lions Club, the Churchville Fire Department, Churchville Fire Police, the Monroe County Parks Department, and parents of all the “Trick or Treaters”. David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga Thanks to our new postmaster at the Avon Post Office. He goes above and beyond to help all of us. Thank You, D.T.

The polarization of the US has set us up to be susceptible to manipulation. Instead of asking the more insightful questions and viewing the responses with an open mind we take a party (or tribal) stand and seek to PROVE our position. That opens us to deceptive practices: Changing the criteria, turning perpetrators into victims, deflecting attention, minimizing criminal behavior by generalizing it. Don’t be duped, it's a lie.

In this week’s edition 68% of those polled thought that monuments already erected should never be removed. There are over 700 Confederate monuments and an additional 800 Confederate symbols spanning 31 states and were erected during the Jim Crow era (1870s-1950s). Two of Stonewall Jackson’s great-greatgrandsons penned an open letter to the mayor of Richmond, the former capital of the Confederacy as well as the grandsons’ hometown, regarding Jackson’s statue there. “[W]e are writing today to ask for the removal of his statue, as well as the removal of all Confederate statues from Monument Avenue,” they wrote in their letter published on Slate. “They are overt symbols of racism and white supremacy."

Sunday my ATM card and transaction got frozen on the screen. While I was messaging the bank on FB and talking to them, some of you were swearing at me and throwing me dirty looks. Well, being a Sunday no one was at the bank, so I had to secure my card before I left. You would have done the same thing. Really, some of you people didn't have to act the way you did. It was not my fault. I worked out a solution with the bank, didn't say a word to you angry people and went over and bought a lottery ticket and won $100. I was the winner, not you in more ways than one. Not my fault what happened, the angry looks and words were not appreciated.

they do is complain about the noise that their neighbors make above them. If you don't like hearing them walking or TV playing or when they have family and friends over, then maybe you should move to an upstairs apartment or just move out. Don't make it miserable for your neighbors who have lived there several years before you moved in and never had a problem before you. I wanted a collision estimate not a blatant disregard of my personal space. The estimator entered my car without my permission and read my mail and the nutcracker correspondence inside. There was no reason to enter the car. Perhaps he was a nutcracker collector. Time to reconsider the Empire State and move to DC.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Was Case of ‘Bird Lung’ an Allergy or Infection? --DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a very active, healthy 68-year-old until March, when I was hospitalized for two weeks for bilateral pneumonia. I was told by doctors at the hospital that it would take four to six weeks to get my health back. However, I experienced shortness of breath and bouts of coughing for months, and insisted on seeing a specialist three weeks ago. A CT scan and bronchoscopy showed symptoms typical of bird lung. We had a cockatiel for 17 years! I am now taking prednisone and ibuprofen, which are helping to clear up the inflammation. I hope to be able to return to work soon. My family doctor and several other doctors I know said that they’d studied this at med school but had never seen it in their practices. I hope this serves as a warning to other people who might be tempted to buy a pet bird or to breed them. I was lucky, but someone in poor health might not have survived the deadly combination of pneumonia and bird lung. ANSWER: “Bird lung” is a term that might refer to either of two possibilities. The first condition is “bird-fanciers lung” -- essentially an allergic reaction to bird droppings, feathers and the proteins of various birds. It can look very much like pneumonia, with abnormal chest X-ray findings that can be indistinguishable. The only cure is to get away from the source of the allergens, but prednisone might be necessary in severe cases. It is not an infection. The second possibility is an infection called psittacosis (sit-a-CO-sis), caused by the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci. Cockatiels are commonly infected by this organism, and the birds do not always appear ill. Psittacosis can be a very severe illness, potentially affecting multiple systems, but it usually responds rapidly to appropriate antibiotics, such as tetracyclines. Given your history, I suspect that bird-fancier’s lung, also called hypersensitivity pneumonitis, is more likely. It sounds like your specialist is treating you appropriately. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I read that microwaving food can cause the food to lose nutritional value or even to become carcinogenic. Is this true? -- S.G. ANSWER: Not really. Heating food does cause some nutrients, such as vitamin C, to break down. But microwaves don’t do that more than any other cooking method does. In general, the longer a food is kept very hot, the more nutrients are lost. So quick heating keeps in the most nutrients. Quickly steaming is another way. That’s essentially what a microwave does, since it heats water molecules very efficiently, steaming the water contained in food or that you use to rinse it. In fact, microwaving may be better than boiling, since many nutrients can be lost in the water if you just throw it out. As far as carcinogens (cancer-causing chemicals) go, these are products of very high heat, especially grilling meat. Because microwaves can heat unevenly, some areas of the food can get very hot while others stay cold, which is why it’s best, when microwaving, to cook for a short while and allow the heat to distribute itself before heating further or serving. 4 simple ways to save more for retirement It’s never too early to begin saving for retirement. While millions of people have no doubt heard or read those very words before, surveys indicate that few people are taking that lesson to heart. A 2018 survey from Bankrate.com found that 20 percent of Americans don’t save any of their annual income. Things aren’t necessarily rosier in Canada, where the financial institution CIBC reports that 32 percent of people nearing or on the cusp of retiring have nothing saved for retirement. Saving for retirement can seem impossible in households where every dollar counts. But the following are four simple ways to save more for retirement without making dramatic lifestyle changes. 1. Turn raises into retirement savings. According to the WorldatWork 2018-2019 Salary Budget Survey: Top Level Results, salary budgets in the United States are projected to rise by an average of 3.2 percent in 2019, while those in Canada are expected to rise by 3 percent. Working professionals can save more for retirement by converting some or all their raises into retirement savings. Pre-tax retirement accounts allow working professionals to put aside money before taxes are paid, so weekly paychecks will not be greatly affected if you choose to increase the percentage of your income you deposit into such accounts. Do this each time you receive a raise and your retirement savings will grow considerably. 2. Put bonuses to work. Professionals who receive bonuses can speak to their employer and request that their retirement contribution rates be increased when bonuses are issued. Many 401(k) retirement plans allow workers to contribute as much as 80 percent of their paychecks. While that’s not sustainable for most people every pay period, increasing your

contribution rate dramatically when your bonus is issued is a great way to save more for retirement. Contribution rates can then be returned to normal the following pay period. 3. Downsize your home. Empty nesters nearing retirement age may benefit by downsizing their homes. Doing so can reduce utility bills, property taxes and other expenses, and those savings can then be redirected into retirement accounts. 4. Reinvest tax returns. Working professionals accustomed to receiving tax returns can use that money to catch up on their retirement savings. Rather than spending tax returns or depositing them into traditional savings accounts, reinvest them into a retirement account. Speak with a financial planner to help you figure out how to accomplish this goal. Even if it requires opening a new account, the long-term benefits or reinvesting returns are substantial. Saving for retirement is important, and it’s never too late or too early to start setting aside more money for your golden years.

Thanksgiving: Some Assembly Required By Amanda Dudek

When the Pilgrims famously landed on Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts, Fort Nassau, a Dutch base in New York, had already been established under the command of Hendrick Christiaensen in 1614. If that surprises you, then you will certainly be surprised to learn that the first American Thanksgiving, which was celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621, may have had some roots in the Dutch annual October Commemoration of the 1574 Lifting of the Spanish Siege of Leiden (Leyden). This Dutch celebration consisted of such traditions as the giving of thanks, feasting, war games and other such festivities. This means that a precursor to our first American Thanksgiving could well have been celebrated in New York for about 7 years before the Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving celebration in 1621. While many now suggest that this Dutch celebration is an ancestor to our First American Thanksgiving and while it may, in fact, be true, it does not change what is unique about this United States holiday. Unlike several subsequent generations, the Pilgrim settlers sought peaceful coexistence with their Native American neighbors. Also, acting contrary to a litany of propaganda and commonly accepted beliefs of the time, the Pilgrim settlers invited them to sit and break bread, a fact which suggests an understanding that Native American peoples were not the subhuman creatures they were so often, and so wrongly, represented to be at that time. That terrible first winter, Puritan settlers and Native American people came together, and they survived. In the United States, we seem to keep learning this lesson of unity over and over again, and each time, it seems to be somehow connected to Thanksgiving. In October of 1863, during the American Civil War, in which at least one of the mitigating issues was the debate over the humanity and, therefore, the freedom of African Americans, President Abraham Lincoln declared a national Day of Thanksgiving to be observed on the last Thursday in November. The United States was

divided by war. It was being torn apart, and yet, a Day of Thanks was observed. At last, the Civil War ended, and while there were many results, some positive and others not, one exceptionally good outcome was that the African American people were freed from slavery. The nation was again one United States of America. We came together, and we moved forward. In November of 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated about five months after announcing his intentions of sending comprehensive Civil Rights legislation to Congress. The Kennedys specifically requested that Macy’s still hold its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, a parade which remains a central Thanksgiving Day tradition to the present. As a nation, we mourned our president; we celebrated Thanksgiving, and we continued the struggle for Civil Rights legislation until the Civil Rights Act was passed the following year. We came together, and we moved forward. The past couple of years have been divisive for many Americans. Some Americans were pleased with the results of our 2016 presidential election while other Americans were not. The political ranks have been drawn up like picket lines, threatening to divide and destroy friends and even families all across the United States. From its earliest American roots, Thanksgiving has been, in part, about bridging divides and coming together to give thanks for the common blessings we all share. Perhaps one of the most important things to be thankful for this year are the people sitting around the table with us, regardless of color, culture, creed or political position. It may take some effort, but if we can still give thanks for the blessing of each other, we will come together. We will survive. We will move forward.

EASY ‘GREEN’ THANKSGIVING IDEAS Use fine china when serving meals. Thanksgiving provides an opportunity to serve meals on fine china and use the silverware that has gone unused instead of disposable plates and utensils. In addition to adding a touch of elegance to meals, reusable china and silverware is less wasteful than paper plates and plastic utensils. Cloth napkins and other table linens are also more eco-friendly than paper napkins.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A project benefits from your organizational skills that get it up and running. Your success leaves a highly favorable impression. Don’t be surprised if you get some positive feedback soon. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Spend time on practical matters through the end of the week. Then begin shifting your focus to more-artistic pursuits. Resist being overly self-critical. Just allow yourself to feel free to create. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Restarting those creative projects you had set aside for a while will help provide a much-needed soothing balance to your hectic life. Besides, it will be like meeting old friends again. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A change in plans could make it tough to keep a commitment. But stay with it. You’ll get an A-plus for making the effort to do what’s right and not taking the easy way out by running off. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s enthusiasm for a workplace policy review is admirable. But be sure you know who is really behind the resistance to change before pointing your finger at the wrong person. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You can expect to have to do a lot of work through midweek. Devote the rest of the week to checking your holiday plans in case some need to be adjusted to accommodate changes. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Try to avoid signing on the dotted line in the early part of the week. You need time to study issues that weren’t fully explored. Later in the week might be more favorable for decision-making. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A new development could snarl travel schedules or other holiday-linked projects. Some flexibility might be called for to deal with the problems before they get too far out of hand. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Relatives seek your advice on a matter you’d rather not be involved in. If so, use that sage Sagittarian tact to decline the “offer,” so that no one’s feelings are needlessly hurt. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A shift in planning direction might help you speed up your progress toward achieving that longplanned goal. Trusted colleagues are ready to offer some valuable support. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) An unexpected demand for settlement of an old loan could create some pre-holiday anxiety. But you might not really owe it. Check your records thoroughly before remitting payment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to get into the social swim and enjoy some well-earned fun and games with those closest to you before you have to resume more serious activities next week. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ability to sense the needs of others makes you a wise counselor for those seeking help with their problems. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.
