What is a seborrheic keratosis?

Thanks to education and awareness about skin cancer, more people are taking heed of skin growths and changes and visiting their dermatologists. A spot or mole on the body can be a cause for concern. A seborrheic keratosis is one such type of skin growth that is actually benign but may cause concern due to its appearance.

Seborrheic keratoses, or SKs, are one of the most common noncancerous skin growths, says The Mayo Clinic. Although anyone can get them, they are more common in middle-aged to older adults. Also known as basal cell papilloma, senile warts or barnacles, these growths form as a common sign of skin aging, according to DermNet New Zealand.

The American Academy of Dermatology says a seborrheic keratosis may seem worrisome because it can look like a wart, a pre-cancerous skin growth or even skin cancer. However, despite their appearance, SKs are harmless.

How do SKs form?

Seborrheic means “greasy” and keratosis means “thickening of the skin.” Despite the name, SKs are not known to be caused by an abundance of sebum in the skin, nor are they limited to areas of increased oil production. The exact cause of SKs isn’t known, but some doctors feel that an overproduction of skin cells can cause a thickening of the skin in certain areas. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology offers that SKs are most likely hereditary, and they often are found on the trunk of the body and where the face meets the scalp. IS ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE HEREDITARY? The National Institute on Aging notes that only a very rare form of Alzheimer’s disease is inherited. Early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, or FAD, is caused by mutations in certain genes. If these genes are passed down from parent to child, then the child is likely, but not certain, to get FAD. So while many adults may be concerned about Alzheimer’s because one of their parents had the disease, the NIA notes that the majority of Alzheimer’s cases are late-onset, which has no obvious family pattern.

Researchers have not yet determined a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

even possible for them to fall off naturally over time. The Mayo Clinic says that, unless changes include becoming sore or bleeding without healing, there’s little need to act. SKs may form singularly, but often they appear in groups.

Cancer risk?

SKs have no relationship to skin cancer and do not pose a risk to one’s health. Unlike moles, they will not turn into melanoma.

The superficial nature of SKs mean they can become irritated by clothing and grow.

Treatment Unless a seborrheic keratosis is in an area that causes constant irritation, there is really no need to seek treatment. However, dermatologists can remove them quite easily if they are unsightly or uncomfortable. A topical anesthetic, cryosurgery or laser therapy is possible. Generally little scarring is produced, offers AOCD. Although SKs are harmless, their appearance may be similar to skin conditions that are not. Those who are unsure about changes to the skin should always seek the help of a licensed dermatologist.

Does Too Much Water Wear Out Kidneys?

DEAR DR. ROACH: We are always being told to drink water -the consequence of which, of course, is increased urination. But what about the kidneys? Since they have to perform repeatedly, are they being worn out prematurely?

I am a 62-year-old female. On my past physical, I was told that my bladder had dropped a bit. Does this have anything to do with excessive urination caused by drinking too much water? -- R.R. ANSWER: The kidney is capable of performing its two primary functions -- removing waste products and maintaining salt and water balance -- under a wide variety of conditions. In fact, a healthy set of kidneys can get rid of 40 liters of water daily. Even so, a high water load does cause the kidney to work hard, especially under the now-rare condition of minimal salt intake.

Unfortunately, damaged kidneys sometimes cannot handle a high water load.

I often get frustrated with the recommendation to drink a certain quantity of water, most commonly 8 cups a day. That amount is too much for some people, and not enough for others. Listening to your body and drinking when you are thirsty is, in general, a much better approach. There are some instances where drinking more water than you feel you need makes sense: in people with a history of kidney stones, for example. Some older people have inadequate thirst mechanisms, so an extra glass or two of water might be a good idea for them, and won’t cause problems in most people.

Your second question, about a “dropped” bladder, has nothing to do with the kidneys. Descent of the bladder -- a type of pelvic organ prolapse -- is caused by changes in the pelvic floor, especially in older women who’ve had multiple childbirths. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A recent newspaper article suggested that mental and brain health might be improved by taking a small dose of lithium (5 mg) daily. What are your thoughts? -- R.B.L. ANSWER: Lithium is a light element found in trace amounts in the ground and in drinking water. It is used as a treatment in mental illnesses, especially bipolar disorder and occasionally in resistant cases of depression. Lithium requires skill in prescribing and monitoring, but it probably is underused, according to my colleagues in psychiatry. Lithium has a probably unwarranted bad reputation.

I found the article you mentioned, by Dr. Anna Fels, and recalled studies that showed suicide, homicide and rape rates were higher in communities with low lithium levels, and I find this intriguing.

People in higher-lithium areas also seemed to have lower dementia levels. However, much more research needs to be done before I could recommend lithium as a supplement for brain health.

BY THE WAY: The usual dose for lithium in people with psychiatric conditions is around 1,000 to 1,800 milligrams daily.

The content in drinking water in some areas is as high as 0.17 milligrams per liter. Drinking about 6 liters a day would get you only a thousandth of the usual daily dose. I can’t even speculate on what dose might be appropriate as a supplement. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A Random Act of Kindness happened to me today. It made me think about what happened and what it meant to me. I was on my way home and decided to pick up a few things from Tops. As usual, walking through the store I loaded my basket and went to the checkout. I placed my items on the belt and checked my pocket and noticed I only had limited funds with me. Checking my items very closely I realized if I didn't purchase the coffee, I would have enough money. So I told the cashier not to ring up the coffee. At this point the couple behind me told the cashier to ring the coffee on

their purchases. I protested at first but suddenly I felt that it would make them feel good about Their Random Act of Kindness. I accepted and wished them the Very Merriest of Christmases. I started thinking about this. What happened? Did I try to turn their kindness into a kindness from me? Then I thought that I was missing the point of what happened. I was a little embarrassed about not having enough money with me. So I was trying very hard to find the way so I could blame something and that I was just a victim. I had more money home and could well afford the few dollars for the coffee. I began thinking that the Kindness I received has nothing to do about the $ 6.00.

It has nothing to do with who is at fault or not smart enough to bring more money. Or even Tops' fault for letting me grab too many items which started this in the first place. I want to thank the young couple for being there and bless them. A Random Act of Kindness and a smile go much further than the instant it takes to happen.

On Pearl Harbor Day WWII Veteran recognized, while having lunch at the local Denny Restaurant with a friend, our waitress came over to our table and told us the bill had already been paid. When we asked who paid she said the man had already left. We both are very appreciative of this man's gesture and will pay it forward and trust that he and his family will have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Kudos to the awesome group of singers who sang so wonderfully at Tops in Dansville on 12/1512/16. How refreshing to hear such beautiful music while shop-ping! I felt blessed to be a part of this sweet choir sharing their faith filled music with everyone. Huge thank you to Tops also for inviting such talent. God Bless you all!

Thank you to all the volunteer youth basketball coaches for all the time and effort that you have put into coaching our little ones. We know it's not always easy to give up your nights and weekends. Thank you for teaching the sportsmanship, fair play and many values that our kids will need throughout life.

On Saturday night, December 16th the Riga Recreation "Rudolph-Mobile" took flight over the roads of Churchville/ Riga in search of decorated homes in the area. Santa was accompanied by his elves and others to choose the most tastefully lighted homes and then give them "Secret Santa" gift cards from local businesses.

After one of Rudolph's antlers fell off Santa treated his crew to a warm Tim Hortons snack.

HEALTHY RESOLUTIONS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD Many people see the dawn of a new year as the perfect time to implement changes that they hope will have positive impacts on their lives in the year ahead. New Year’s resolutions have a way of falling by the wayside as the year progresses, but sticking with the following healthy resolutions can have lasting impacts on the lives of men and women.

• Read more. Many adults wish they had more time to read, but busy schedules filled with commitments to work and family can make it hard to pick up a book every day. But perhaps more men and women would find time to read if they knew doing so could add years to their lives. In an analysis of 12 years of data from the University of Michigan’s Health and Retirement Study, researchers at the Yale School of Public Health found that people who read books for as little as 30 minutes a day over several years lived an average of two years longer than people who did not read at all.

• Sleep more. More time to sleep might seem like an unattainable goal for many men and women. But the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute notes that ongoing sleep deficiency can increase a person’s risk for chronic health problems, including heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends adults age 18 and older get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night.

• Turn off your devices. As recently as 15 years ago, many adults made it through their days without smartphones, tablets, e-readers, and other devices that are so prevalent today. While it might seem impossible to live without such devices in the 21st century, turning them off can have profound impacts on people’s quality of life. A 2013 survey of more than 1,000 people conducted by the resilience platform meQuilibrium found that 73 percent of respondents felt their devices contributed to stress in their lives. The American Psychological Association notes that stress can negatively affect the musculoskeletal system, the respiratory system and the nervous system and potentially increase a person’s risk for heart disease and gastrointestinal problems.

• Work less. Working fewer hours may help many professionals cut back on their stress, as the APA notes that 65 percent of Americans cited work as their primary source of stress. But working fewer hours may also make men and women more productive. A recent experiment funded by the Swedish government compared nurses at a retirement home who worked six-hour days on eight-hour salaries to a control group that worked the more traditional eight-hour workday.

Nurses in the experimental group reported having more energy in their spare time and at work, which allowed them to do 64 percent more activities with facility residents. Nurses in the experimental group also took half as much sick time as those in the control group.

As a result, the study’s authors ultimately concluded that productivity can increase with fewer hours worked.
