Eco-Friendly Cat Litter On the surface, cats have relatively small carbon footprints. They don’t drive gas guzzlers, their smaller statures mean they generally consume less food than dogs and, for the most part, they self-groom. However, cats use a litter box for their business and all of that discarded litter and waste can be an environmental hazard depending on the type of litter used. Litter is often scooped and disposed of in plastic bags, which don’t decompose, compounding the problem. In the past, finding eco-friendly cat litters was hard to come by. Today, many of the products on store shelves are environmentally friendly, and many brands offer eco-conscious cat owners a host of options. Shoppers can consider a clumping product, in which waste is flushed down the toilet and the box is not frequently dumped. Environmental products like shredded newspapers, recycled paper, corn husks, peanut shells, and even garden mulch can be used as litter. Some people choose to bury the used litter in the yard to naturally decompose instead of putting it in the trash.

MAGIC MAZE AUSTRALIAN CITIES

HOCUS-FOCUS 1. Sign is missing. 2. Dog’s ear is shorter. 3. Mitten is removed. 4. Sun is missing. 5. Book is missing. 6. Cap is missing.

Provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Every year, starting in late December and continuing into March, male whitetailed deer shed their antlers as their testosterone levels drop in response to the lengthening days. By late winter and early spring, eager shed hunters head out into the woods and fields to look for these hidden treasures. Finding a single shed is a thrill, but finding a matching set, or those of a purely impressive adult buck, is worth more than their weight in gold to many. For the inexperienced, it might seem like looking for a needle in a haystack, but for the avid shed hunter with a trained eye it’s worth the effort. And, if your dog enjoys accompanying you in the woods, you can learn about shed hunting with a dog in the February 2017 issue of the Conservationist, a New York State Department of Conservation publication. Winter deer yards are good places to start. During bouts of extreme cold and snow, deer will congregate in lower elevation areas with good southern exposure and evergreen cover to break the wind. Experienced shed hunters scout

these areas pre-season in hopes of increasing their odds. Shed hunting is a great way to get outside as the weather breaks in late winter/early spring. It can also provide the experienced hunters with clues as to what kinds of bucks will be around in the fall during the next hunting season. Remember, “Let Young Bucks Go and Watch Them Grow” to see bucks with bigger, more impressive antlers -- a treasure worth looking for.

Assistive devices help people remain mobile Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. The following are some of the common types of mobility devices available for purchase. • Canes: Canes are handheld devices that provide a little extra stability or support to weakened limbs. Canes are easily transported and can assist those who need only a little help. • Standard walkers: Also known as medical walkers, standard walkers offer substantial support and must be lifted to move. That requires upper body strength, which can be difficult for some to maintain on long trips. • Rolling walkers: Rolling walkers are similar to standard walkers. But rolling walkers have wheels, either on the front only or on both sets of legs. They are somewhat less stable than standard walkers. Rolling walkers with wheel-locking devices may offer stability when needed. Some rolling walkers are called “rollators.” • Wheelchairs: Standard wheelchairs must be powered by the

Rolling walkers are assistive devices that can keep individuals mobile despite cognitive or physical disabilities.

person in the chair or by someone pushing it from behind. This can be difficult for people with minimal upper body strength. Mechanical wheelchairs are powered with a lever or button. Some people may opt for motorized scooters over bulkier wheelchairs when possible. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Read more. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: • Trouble communicating or finding words. • Difficulty completing complex tasks. • Challenges with planning and organization. • Episodes of confusion and disorientation. • Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party. • Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question concerning estradiol. My gynecologist has me taking 1 milligram of estradiol daily. My internist recommends that I not take it. Which recommendation should I follow? I have never had hot flashes, so that is not a problem. My internist says that I need to gradually stop taking the estradiol. He says that this medicine has more problems than benefits. It is hard to choose what to do. What do you recommend? -- H.L. ANSWER: Back in the 1990s, we often recommended that women take estrogen in order to prevent problems, in addition to treating hot flashes. Two important studies came out showing that estrogen appeared to cause problems as well as prevent them. The definitive answer as to whether estrogen causes more problems than it prevents still isn’t known, and it probably depends on many factors. The term “estrogen” as I am using it refers to a group of related compounds. Estradiol is sometimes referred to as “bioidentical,” since it is the same hormone that a woman’s body makes, as opposed to conjugated equine estrogen (Premarin), which was most commonly used in the 1990s and earlier. The type of estrogen may make a difference in terms of risk. Also, estrogen is seldom given without a progesterone compound in women who have not had their uterus removed, and the type of progesterone appears to make a major difference in risk. Briefly, the evidence suggests that estrogen reduces the risk of colon cancer and of osteoporosis and fractures. However, it increases the risk of blood clots. The largest areas of confusion are in breast cancer and heart disease. For conjugated estrogens with medroxyprogesterone, which has the best information, for 1,000 women in 10 years there were seven more heart attacks, eight more strokes, eight more blood clots in the lungs and eight more invasive breast cancers, but six fewer colon cancers and five fewer hip fractures. Recent data suggest that women who start estrogen immediately at menopause have a lower risk of heart disease than those who start five or 10 years after menopause (in fact, they may have an overall lower risk, compared with women who don’t take estrogen). Women who took estrogen alone did not have an increased risk of breast cancer. Because of the known harms of estrogen, at this time neither I nor any expert body recommends taking estrogen just to prevent problems. Until new studies become available, since you have no hot flashes, I agree with your internist. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I wanted to tell you of the unbelievable relief I’ve gotten from the small, very painful cracks that used to develop at the ends of my fingers next to the nails, usually in the winter. Since I started taking 1,000 mg of fish oil once a day, I have had only one crack. -- R.L.S. ANSWER: I couldn’t find any studies on this, but anecdotal reports say fish oil may be helpful and is unlikely to harm. It’s reasonable to give it a try. I would recommend a supplement that contains both EPA and DHA. The Costco brand was found to be of high quality. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. FEBRUARY 2018 “Library Aid Faces 3% CUT” We need your voice! Gov. Cuomo’s proposed funding is $4M less than what was in last year’s enacted state budget. This proposed CUT fails to acknowledge the crucial role libraries serve in our communities, and the contributions they make to our state’s education system.␣Libraries ARE Education!␣State Education Law requires that Library Aid should be $102.6M for FY2018-19. Libraries should be fully funded under the law. Absent of that, library aid must at least increase each year in parity with increases in education funding. Please contact your elected officials to voice your support. Go to nyla.org and click on the Advocacy button. “Just for Families!” Join us for Family Board Game Night Friday,␣Feb. 2nd␣from 5-7 p.m. We’ll play Clue, Scrabble, Candyland and many more favorites! ␣Pizza and refreshments will also be provided! ␣This Chamber of Commerce␣First Friday␣Event is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Dansville Public Library. ␣For more information, please call␣(585) 335-6720. Then, Sat., Feb. 3rd join us on “Take Your Child to the Library Day” from 10 a.m. – Noon for our first Kids Drive in Movie! Kids ages 3-6 years old will create and decorate their own cardboard car, “drive-in” & watch a movie. A light snack will be provided. AND while you are here, browse the children’s book collection and learn more about the public library! Don’t miss this special event that raises community awareness about the importance of the library in the life of a child, and promotes library services and programs for children and families. “Basic Yoga with Kate” A New Year’s resolution to practice a healthy lifestyle can begin any time of the year! This month, Kate Drake presents Basic Yoga: Body Mindfulness, Saturday, Feb. 10 at 12:30 p.m. Kate is a Yoga Alliance 500 member, and finished certification in therapeutic yoga in 2017.

She combines her practice with her Occupational Therapist skills. She opened “Every Body’s Yoga Studio” in 2008. Come learn a bit of yoga practice you can take home with you! “Family Night @ the Movies!” Our popular Family Movie Night is back! Families will see a movie, enjoy pizza & a drink @ the Library! There’s a new movie at 5:30 p.m. the 2nd and␣4th Tuesday␣of each month through April 24th. Our first movie night will be on␣Tuesday,␣February 13th␣at 5:30 p.m. Sponsors for th evening’s event are Tony’s Pizzeria and Peter Goins. The Library’s second movie will be Tues., Feb. 27th and is sponsored by Tony’s Pizzeria and Dansville Dental Professionals. The Library sends a warm “Thank you!” to this year’s sponsors who make this program series possible. We welcome your inquiry about movie titles at 585-335-6720 or stop in the library. Movie Licensing rules don’t allow us to advertise specific shows, so please, do call! “Baby’s Book Buddies Every␣Thursday” Baby’s Book Buddies continues this winter! Ms. Brandy will introduce children ages 6 to 36 months to the joy of books, fingerplays and songs! A different theme is explored each week. Please call␣(585) 335-6720␣to register your child or stop in the library. “Children’s Winter Tea Party” Come join us for our annual Children’s Winter Tea Party at the Dansville Public Library! HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Add insulation. M any older homes are poorly insulated. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation w as not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case w ith older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. Cover your w ater heater w ith an insulated w ater heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the w ater.

Unique Ways To Shop Locally Forgo a traditional vacation. If you’re used to taking an annual trip to a Caribbean island or another faraw ay locale, forgo that trip this year and take a more local vacation instead. A local vacation can be similar to a staycation, w hen you simply stay home, but spend some nights out on the tow n in your local community. Go out to eat, take in a concert or theater performance at a nearby theater or take the kids out for miniature golf. For those w ho feel the need to get aw ay from home, consider a local bed and breakfast or another relaxing locale that’s close to home. You w ill still get the feel of a traditional vacation, but you w on’t spend as much and you’ll be doing your part to help the local economy.
