This Mother’s Day, The Fresh Air Fund recognizes the many remarkable women in Finger Lakes, NY who take on the role of “Fresh Air mom.” They open their hearts and homes to children from New York City’s low income communities through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. Each summer, nearly 4,000 children visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban, and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada. There is no such thing as a “typical” host family, just the excitement to share the simple joys of summer with a child from a lowincome New York City community. First time Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 12 years old. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. “Before Jamie came the first summer, we thought a lot about what we were going to give her during the visit. It did not take us long to realize that what made our experience truly
remarkable is what Jamie gave us. She’s provided us with a new perspective and countless laughs and smiles,” says Helene, a Fresh Air host mother. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. To learn more about hosting a Fresh Air child this summer, please contact Patricia Kaleta at 585-732-3720 or The Fresh Air Fund at www.freshair.org.

A bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone or both, osteoporosis can be debilitating. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis is responsible for two million broken bones each year, a figure that experts predict with rise to three million by 2025. While anyone can suffer from osteoporosis, women are more likely than men to develop the disease. Studies suggest that while up to one in four men age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis, one in two women age 50 and older are likely to suffer such a fate. The NOF notes that osteoporosis is often referred to as a silent disease, with many people not even realizing they have it until they suffer a fracture. Because of the silent nature of osteoporosis and their increased vulnerability to it, women may want to take the following measures to protect themselves against this potentially debilitating disease. · Include ample calcium and vitamin D in your diet. The NOF notes that calcium and vitamin D are both vital to building strong, dense bones when you’re young, and both calcium and vitamin D keep bones strong and healthy as the body ages. Women age 50 and younger need 1,000 milligrams of calcium each day, while those 51 and older need 1,200 milligrams each day. Calcium-rich foods include dairy products like low- or nonfat milk, yogurt and cheese. Women age 50 and younger need between 400 and 800 international units (IU) of vitamin D each day, while those age 50 and older need between 800 and 1,000 IU each day. The body can get vitamin D from sunlight
and supplements or multivitamins. According to Age in Place, nearly 60 percent of available senior income is being spent on housing and healthcare, and those expenditures do not include transportation or food. The rising costs of many necessities can make it difficult for seniors to make ends meet and, as a result, certain money-saving measures are often necessary.
Cardiac arrest, is the abrupt loss of heart function in a person who may or may not have diagnosed heart disease. Though often mistaken as the same thing as a heart attack, cardiac arrest is not the same. Heart attacks can cause cardiac arrest and even lead to death, but the cause of heart attack and cardiac arrest are different.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Don’t Keep Secrets From Your Doctor DEAR DR. ROACH: About three years ago, I was walking from the parking lot to church (not a long distance) and was overcome with a feeling of warmth and weakness throughout my body. I almost dropped my purse, but it stopped almost immediately. About three weeks ago, the same thing happened. I did not feel ill, and it passed almost as fast as it came on. I am 65 years old, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. I have yearly checkups and blood tests. After looking over my yearly bloodwork, which we do at work, my white blood cell count is usually low, according to my hematologist. He had me do a total body X-ray and several blood tests over a three-month period and found nothing wrong with me. I did not mention the above to him. Can you tell me what can possibly be going on in my body? -- A.N. ANSWER: Since it has happened only twice in three years, and since you have had an evaluation without finding anything, it may just be one of those things that happens that we don’t get an answer to. In fact, I think that is the most likely outcome. However, whenever I hear about warmth all over the body, I worry about conditions that cause a release of substances that act on the blood vessels. Carcinoid syndrome and pheochromocytomas are two rare conditions that can cause a temporary flushing sensation, and you certainly should mention this to your doctor. Neither of them is likely, but you don’t want to miss either possibility. Sudden onset of weakness is a warning sign of a TIA or stroke, but your situation doesn’t really sound like that. Still, giving your doctor the most information will help him decide whether this needs to be looked into further. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 80 years old, and have been bothered by frequent urination for many years. My urologist was constantly recommending a surgical procedure, and was performing diagnostic tests to determine what I already knew -- that I do not void fully. I sometimes must urinate three to four times at night. I have not seen this urologist for more than two years. My question is: What are the risks of doing nothing? I was on Flomax and found it to be of no benefit. -- W.B. ANSWER: Difficulty urinating is a common problem for older men, and for many men, the symptoms themselves make them want to be treated. It sounds like you are asking if there might be additional downsides besides the symptoms. The major risk is that there might be a cancer, especially of the prostate, so seeing the urologist to look for cancer is important. Prolonged blockage occasionally leads to kidney damage, if the blockage is severe enough for long enough. Finally, having “stale” urine in the bladder predisposes you to infection. If your doctor finds you have good kidney function, no cancer and no infection, you don’t need to get treated. That being said, there are other treatments besides Flomax that might help your symptoms. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Always eat grapes downward — that is eat the best grapes first; in this way there will be none better left on the bunch, and each grape will seem good down to the last. If you eat the other way, you will not have a good grape in the lot. ~Samuel Butler
The food you buy at the farmers market is fresh and delicious and reflects the truest flavors. As you look forward to asparagus in spring, savor sweet corn in summer, or bake pumpkins in autumn, you reconnect with the earth, the weather, and the turning of the season.
3. Support Family Farmers Family farmers need your support, now that large agribusiness dominates food production in the U.S. Buying directly from farmers gives them a better return for their produce and gives them a fighting chance in today’s globalized economy.
4. Protect the Environment Food in the U.S. travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to your plate. All this shipping uses large amounts of natural resources (especially fossil fuels), contributes to pollution, and creates trash with extra packaging. Food at the farmers market is transported shorter distances and is generally grown using methods that minimize the impact on the earth.
5. Nourish Yourself Most food found at the farmers market is minimally processed, and many of our farmers go to great lengths to grow the most nutritious produce possible by using sustainable techniques, picking produce right before the market, and growing heirloom varieties.
6. Discover the Spice of Life: Variety At the farmers market you find an amazing array of produce that you don’t see in your average supermarket: red carrots, a rainbow of heirloom tomatoes, purple cauliflower, stinging nettles, green garlic, watermelon radishes, quail eggs, maitake mushrooms, and much, much more.
[Celery] is as fresh and clean as a rainy day after a spell of heat. It crackles pleasantly in the mouth.... it should be eaten alone, for it is the only food which one really wants to hear oneself eat. ~A.A. Milne (1882–1956), “A Word for Autumn,” Not That It Matters

CHICKEN BBQ It is that time of year again for the annual Sparta Center Vol. Fire Department’s annual Mother’s Day Chicken BBQ. We acknowledge that last year some received less than the stellar chicken that we have been known for. We sincerely apologize. We tried something new and we failed. We have learned from our mistakes and will be back this year to provide you with the meal you are accustomed to receiving from us. We hope that you can look past our failed mistake and once again join us for a delicious meal. Thank you

Com m on Law n Crit t ers A nd Pest s: Chinch Bugs: Chinch bugs like to feast on grass that is significantly exposed to sunlight. Though tiny chinch bugs are visible to the naked eye, homeow ners may find they need to get especially close to the ground to see them. Chinch bugs may be living in thatch, so dethatching your law n w ith a rake can make it easier to detect their presence. As chinch bugs rob grass of its m oisture, they also inject toxins into the grass that loosens it from the soil.

Gardening pointers for novices People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

A big thank you to the girl in electronics at Walmart who turned in my husband’s money clip. We live on a fixed income and he was so upset when we got home and he didn’t have it. We can’t thank you enough, we will pay it forward.
Many thanks to Shelley Walker, owner / Farrier of Next Step Trimming. Shelley did a great job on my senior horse’s feet. Not an easy task with a shy and often impatient old horse. Shelley’s calm and professional manner made all the difference. We look forward to the next trim with Next Step Trimming.

Estate Sale Blessings! My sisters and I held an estate sale at our parents’ house in Livonia April 28-29. People had warned us to watch for would-be thieves and nasty people, but we had the NICEST customers ever! Many shared stories about times they shared with Mom and Dad; while others listened to our stories about the items they were buying, like Dad’s army uniforms and Mom’s cherished bakeware and her love of making soup. Livingston County has the friendliest people!

My husband was on his computer looking at his email when a bogus celebrity news popped up. While reading it an alarm sounded, scaring him and his computer went crazy. A number was displayed to call for technical help. He paid them $200 and they had total control of his computer. Luckily my daughter recognized this as a scam. She shut the computer down and we canceled our checking account. Then the scammers called and wanted to know why the computer was shut down, because they weren’t done yet. When told our checking account was canceled they said “you didn’t need to do that, we won’t cash it”! So please, if this happens to you, do not call the number on the screen! Can’t believe people actually do this. Overheard two people saying that each had dropped a family cat and another, a kitten in a field... “I’m sure they’ll be taken care of...” said one pompously. How inhumane and stupid to leave a pet without any way to take care of itself. That animal
probably will die a very slow starvation death, or be injured or killed by another animal, or struck by a car where they know not how to take care. How cruel. We have Humane Societies and Pet Groups who help animals. Why would you own animals in the first place? People like this ought to never be allowed to own an animal... same as the awful ones who have dogs for fighting; same category - non-caring about animals. They are family pets for most of us. After a few long months of our winter weather, I decided to take advantage of a rare warm and sunny February day and take my dog for a walk at my local town park. We arrived and I noticed immediately, even before I reached the gravel track, dog poop, everywhere! We could not walk four feet either on the path or in the grass without stepping in it. This continued for our entire two mile walk. I do not appreciate tracking it into my car and my home on both my boots and my dog’s feet. If you choose to live in filth, keep it in your own yard and let me enjoy my local park. I have also chosen not to use our dog park due to the same issue, along with dogs, and owners for that matter who are not socialized or well behaved enough to be in any public area!

“1000 Books Before Kindergarten!” Reading to your child early spells success! Now the Library offers 1000 Books Before Kindergarten! an early literacy program for Babies, Toddlers, & Preschoolers. Let US help YOU choose books your child will enjoy. It’s never too early to read to your baby. 1000 Books Before Kindergarten! is a national initiative to encourage parents/ caregivers to read 1,000 books to their children before they enter Kindergarten. By reading just one book a night, families can reach the 1,000 book goal in three years and provide their children essential early literacy skills. And reading the same book more than once counts because children LOVE repetition! Readers keep track of the book titles they have read in a Reading Log. Register your child, age birth to 5 years, at the Library at any time! This program is funded in part by the Friends of the Dansville Public Library, Dansville Women’s Civic Club, and Kathy Rose. It was also made possible by a grant from Senator Michael F. Nozzolio. Questions? please call the Library at 585-335-6720. “Celebrate Memorial Day” The Library will be closed on Monday May 29th in celebration of Memorial Day. In case gardening or landscaping is on your to-do list for this holiday, stop by to borrow books to help you. New books with some great ideas arrive all the time! If we don’t have exactly what you are looking for, remember: We can order books for you on inter-library loan. As always, go to owwl.org to order books on your favorite subject, or to renew them while you’re at home.

My name is MacDuff because I am a Scottish breed – a West Highland White Terrier. I love everything about life, even if the view is upside down! I especially love my big brother Phoenix and my big sister, Scout. We are all expert squirrel chasers! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
