Oakfield Betterment Committee had more than 100 people volunteer for the Earth Day Cleanup.

Thank you! Many hands make light work. The groups set out to clean up roadside debris from 9am to 11:30, and then met back for lunch and prizes, which included reusable beverage containers and 25 white oak seedlings. Special thanks to the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, high school leadership class, teachers and all the caring citizens who came because they love our little town.

Santino’s graciously donated pizza, the Town provided gloves and bags and safety vests and a dumpster for the trash, and Home Depot donated buckets. Shout out to Councilman Matt Martin for doing almost everything behind the scenes that needed doing. Jacqueline Chamberlain - your efforts were greatly appreciated for helping out getting everything ready the morning of - despite a broken foot!! Oakfield is even more beautiful now, and if we take care of the white oak seedlings, we can put the oak back in Oakfield!

Thank you to the walker On April 15, my mom took me to Bristol Mountain for the Zip-Line Tour. We had NO idea that there were different areas for the Bristol Mountain activities.

Thank You, Lord, that there was a LONE walker who had no idea why he was there. There was NO ONE ELSE anywhere around the area. He, fortunately knew EXACTLY where we needed to go. Thank you SO much for helping us to get where we needed to go in time for the tour. You have made my 50th Birthday a VERY memorable one!

Living in a small town in a mostly rural county, you soon find out who your neighbors are. I was recently involved in an accident (thankfully no one was hurt). A state trooper was in an escort convoy; she stopped and within minutes there were two sheriff’s cars, an ambulance, fire truck, several first responders and fire police. Even someone observing offered coffee. My gratitude to all!

DR. ROACH WRITES: A while back, I asked readers for suggestions on swallowing pills, and I got many helpful answers. I particularly liked this pharmacist’s advice, since it combines physics and common sense: “Because capsules FLOAT and tablets SINK, two ways are helpful.

For capsules this works for me: Place the capsule on your tongue, then take a big swallow of water through a straw, keeping your chin neutral. For tablets, put water in your mouth first, then tilt your head back and drop the tablet into your mouth and swallow.”

Using a straw was the most frequent advice I heard. Thicker liquids were the key for other readers, while one reminded me that an inexpensive pill crusher can turn a pill to powder, which can then be mixed into yogurt or applesauce. However, always check with your pharmacist, since some pills, such as long-acting formulations, should not be crushed, and a few should not be mixed with foods. Another person found that swallowing some ice chips for a few minutes prevented the gag reflex that kept her from swallowing medicines. *** DEAR DR. ANSWER: It depends on the state, but most laboratories require a professional’s order to perform testing. I have mixed feelings about this; however, I generally agree, since a physician or other provider should provide individualized recommendations on the appropriate changes in diet, medication and fluid intake, based on the stone type, medications taken, diseases or conditions present and other factors. There are services available on the Internet that will perform laboratory testing without an order (by having a medical director in a given state order the lab), but I don’t recommend it for the reasons above. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have to take levothyroxine in order to obtain an acceptable TSH number. I have read that some doctors are stating that there is a relationship between hypothyroidism and gluten intolerance, possibly even celiac disease. Is this proven to the point where a patient should alter his or her diet and give up the basic foods of bread and cereal? -- R.K. ANSWER: People with celiac disease have a much higher risk of autoimmune thyroid disease (especially Hashimoto’s, the most common cause of low thyroid) than expected, to the point where everyone with celiac disease should have a blood test to look at thyroid levels. Celiac disease, or intolerance of gluten in general, may have few or subtle symptoms, and it might be worthwhile to consider testing for celiac disease in people with autoimmune thyroid disease. However, I would not recommend a drastic change in diet for people with thyroid disease if there are no symptoms. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Your Some potentially surprising facts about menopause Menopause is a process nearly all healthy women will go through naturally. During menopause, women will begin to experience irregular menstrual cycles to the point where menstruation will cease altogether. WebMD states that most women will enter menopause - marked by not having a period for a duration of one year - on or around the age of 50. Some women experience menopause in their 40s, while others experience it closer to 60.

Many women find they are apprehensive about menopause, which is one of the biggest hormonal changes women experience. Difficulty understanding menopause may be fueled by misinformation, including misconceptions about this time of life. Becoming educated about menopause can help women alleviate any anxiety they feel. · Periods largely don’t stop overnight. In many cases, a woman entering menopause will not cease menstruating all at once. According to the North American Menopause Society, ovary fluctuations occur gradually. It can take anywhere from three to five years before menstruation fully ceases. As ovary function fluctuates, so do hormone levels. This leads to periods being closer together or further apart, lighter or heavier. · Weight gain can occur if women let it. Menopausal women may need to reassess their diets and exercise habits.

During menopause, ovaries make fewer sex hormones, and one might experience a hormonal imbalance. As a result, the body may respond by trying to protect itself by storing fat, especially around the waist, hips and thighs. Working with a

nutritionist and a doctor may help women develop a plan to maintain healthy weights throughout menopause. · Hormone replacement therapy is an option. England’s National Institute of Health and Care Excellence recently changed its view of hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, which was once deemed dangerous due to the perception that it increased a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.

In its review of the evidence, NICE found that if 1,000 women aged 50 were not undergoing HRT, around 22 would be expected to develop breast cancer over seven years. If the same number were put on combined estrogen and progesterone treatment, there would be around five more cases and the slightly increased risk only lasts as long as women are on the therapy. · Everyone doesn’t experience the same symptoms. Many women are prone to hot flashes and mood changes, while others may sail through menopause without noticing much difference. It’s an unpredictable time of life, and women should adapt as their symptoms appear. · Intimacy doesn’t have to wane. While hormonal changes can affect libido, speaking with a doctor about symptoms, including vaginal dryness, can open up a discussion focusing on solutions. · Be on the lookout for mental symptoms as well. Changes in emotions, memory and concentration during perimenopause and menopause due to sudden shifts in hormones are possible. Be aware that these conditions may be linked to menopause and that they, too, can be managed.

Menopause is an inevitability for women. By removing the mystery, women approaching and entering menopause can get the understanding and relief they need.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On June 13, 1381, a large mob of English peasants marches into London and begins burning and looting the city. The Peasants’ Revolt began when Parliament restricted voting rights by raising the poll tax.

I FOUND A BAT IN MY HOUSE! You could be subject to getting rabies vaccinations if the bat is not tested.

Bats are important in the environment but can cause a serious health risk in the home. Based on NYS Department of Health guidelines, if you encounter a bat while sleeping you may need to undergo rabies treatment. Bites can be very small and unknown. Once rabies is contracted it is nearly always fatal.

If you find a bat in your home: 1. Keep it isolated to one room if possible.

2. Capture the bat if you are comfortable doing so. Wait until it lands and then place a can, plastic container or box over it. Slide a paper under it and then place a cover on top to contain it. You may also contact a wildlife removal specialist to capture it.

3. If the bat is killed, the head must not be crushed or destroyed to allow testing.

4. Call the Livingston County Department of Health, Center for Environmental Health, at (585) 243-7280 \ (585) 335-1717. For after hours emergencies, call the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office at (585) 243-7100.

St. Agnes School Takes Page Turner’s Regional Title St. Agnes School Page Turners team, comprised this year of 4th and 5th grade students, took home the Championship Trophy from the Regional Competition which was held on April 24th in York.

Page Turners is a program sponsored by Genesee Valley BOCES which promotes reading amongst students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades. The students read and study from a list of books and poems provided

by Genesee Valley BOCES and then compete against local schools answering questions based on their reading.

The Fall Eastern Division Competition took place on December 5th in York and the Spring competition took place on March 16th in Avon with two teams from Avon Central, and one team each from York, Caledonia-Mumford and St. Agnes School competing. After combining the total scores of the two competitions, St. Agnes School was honored with the title Eastern Division Champion and moved on to the Regional Competition.

The Regional Competition was held on April 24th in York with St. Agnes School, Letchworth, Batavia, Livonia and Pembroke competing for the Regional Title. St. Agnes School came out on top by 1 point in a close match earning them the Regional Championship for the second year in a row.

FULL TIME CLEANERS This position will directly support our mission to be a public liberal arts college promoting excellence in undergraduate education. As a cleaner, you will work as a member of the Department of Facilities Services, to provide quality maintenance services that assure safe, reliable, and aesthetically pleasing buildings and grounds. This position provides competitive wages, benefits, retirement and numerous opportunities for upward mobility at the College.

Applicants must possess the ability to: perform medium to heavy manual labor, climb ladders and scaffolds, stand, stoop, bend, and stretch for long periods of time. Industrial or commercial cleaning experience preferred.
