Violet J. Englert June 29, 2017 Violet J. Englert, age 88, of Geneseo formerly of Leicester, New York, passed away peacefully on Thursday June 29, 2017 at the Suzanne’s Comfort Care Home in Perry surrounded by her loving family.

Violet was born in the Town of Groveland, New York on June 5, 1929 a daughter to the late Leonard and Sarah (Potter) Young.

She volunteered at Family Planning on the Livingston County Campus, worked for the Geneseo High School in their food service program, Livingston County Co-operative Extension as a nutrition aide, a substitute teacher for Livingston County BOCES in Geneseo and retired from there as a teachers aide in the Special Learning Center.

Violet enjoyed reading, listening to music and especially enjoyed times spent with family.

She is survived by her 7 children: Fred (Cheryl) Englert of Wayland, Tim (Susan) Englert of Livonia, Chris (Alyson) Englert of Perry, Melinda Englert of Lockport, Doug (Paulette) Englert of N. Chili, Marvin (Jackie) Englert of Leicester and Andy (Michelle) Englert of Leicester, 20 grandchildren 15 great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

On Friday June 9th there was a silver alert sent out area wide for our mother/mother in law. Thankfully she was located at Toomey’s corners in East Bloomfield after missing for 9 hrs. We are so grateful to everyone involved in the search especially Monroe, Livingston and Ontario county sheriffs, U of R security, the attentive woman who noticed the specialized license plates and the employees of Toomey’s corners mini mart for their kindness and quick action to notify the authorities. She is safe and sound and no longer driving. So grateful for the kindness of strangers.

This allowed the Post to safely get all their marching members and flags to 3 ceremonies in Livonia, Lakeville, and the Conesus Lake Nursing Home. While some hunters may consider their dogs to be loyal companions who deserve the comforts of indoor living, the majority of people who use beagles to hunt share the belief that their dogs must stay outside to maintain the instinct to hunt prey. Nothing could be further from the truth. Keeping a dog outside away from its human companions does not increase its desire or willingness to hunt, chase, herd, or act instinctively in any way. Beagles enjoy the fresh air and should receive plenty of exercise through routine walks on a leash or in a fenced area.

IT IS INHUMANE to keep a dog confined to a small enclosure for long periods of time. A beagle’s coat is smooth or short-haired and is not meant to protect against harsh weather conditions. Educate yourselves, hunters!

Ridesharing keeps seniors on the move Losing the ability to drive and get around is one of the most challenging aspects of growing older for seniors. This loss of independence can result in loneliness, depression and isolation.

Often seniors have to rely on family to take them places, leaving them at the mercy of a friend or relative’s schedule.

Ridesharing services such as Uber, Lyft, Sidecar, and many others can fill the transportation void for older adults and help them regain their lost independence. Many traditional paratransit services (door-to-door transit, often limited to those over 65 and disabled) may be less convenient than ridesharing services, and it may be challenging to find a company that services rural areas.

Plus, reservations may need to be made a day in advance, with limited drop-off locations available. That makes it hard for seniors to make spontaneous plans, again taking away some of their independence. But flexible ridesharing services may provide the flexibility seniors are hoping for.

Connecting with ridesharing services requires only a cursory education in mobile technology. According to a recent report from the Consumer Electronics Association, 46 percent of senior households have smartphones and 40 percent have tablets. Many seniors are becoming more tech-savvy, meaning they have the wherewithal to navigate apps and websites that can connect them with a ride. And if they aren’t, a quick primer from a young friend or relative can stoke their confidence.

Before engaging a ridesharing service, seniors should familiarize themselves with how such services work and take steps to ensure their safety. · Many ridesharing services are linked directly to a credit card

account. Passengers should not have to pay in cash. If the driver requests it, this should raise a red flag. Report the driver to the service. · Confirm that the driver matches the profile and the vehicle that was indicated on the ride app. Never get in the car unless there is verification. · Ask for an estimate regarding the cost of the trip and if those costs can increase considerably during the ride. Budgetconscious seniors should avoid services whose rates can fluctuate dramatically after riders get in the vehicle. · Look into Uber ASSIST as another option. Seniors who require a little help to get in and out of the car or those who need wheelchairs or other devices can choose the Uber ASSIST option on their apps. This ensures their driver will be specially trained and is capable of helping with the transfer. New senior ridesharing services, such as Lift Hero in California, are now hitting the market as well.

Ridesharing services are changing the way people get around. While ridesharing might have been designed with millennials in mind, it has become the new go-to for seniors who are not ready to give up their independence.

Can Magnesium Pills Help Control A-Fib? DEAR DR. ROACH: Ten years ago, I had many episodes of rapid heartbeats, diagnosed as atrial fibrillation. My cardiologist put me on a medication, which I took for a couple of years, but the A-fib came back. The doctor changed my medication to sotalol, but that didn’t help either. I read that low magnesium could be a cause of atrial fibrillation, and I started taking calcium, magnesium and potassium, and have not an episode of rapid heartbeat for four years.

I went back to my doctor, who told me it was a crazy idea. I haven’t seen him in four years. It seems a shame that we hear of so many treatments for A-fib when it might be stopped with a simple supplement. -- S.Z. ANSWER: Well, it certainly isn’t a crazy idea, but low magnesium isn’t the only cause of atrial fibrillation, and supplementing magnesium and other electrolytes will not stop atrial fibrillation in most people. However, low blood magnesium levels are a recognized risk factor for developing atrial fibrillation, and giving magnesium during heart surgery reduces the risk of developing A-fib afterward in some (but not all) studies, so there certainly is something to it.

Also, oral magnesium can make other medications for A-fib work more effectively. Since oral magnesium is safe and cheap, I think it is reasonable to try.

However, I am concerned because atrial fibrillation can go on in some people without their being aware of it, and the major risk of A-fib is blood clots. I would recommend that you continue to get evaluated periodically to make sure your heart rate is persistently normal. I also would try to find a physician who is willing to work with you on combining “alternative” treatments like magnesium with traditional therapy if needed.

Other suggestions included looking for low oxygen levels, and checking whether the blood pressure drops too much upon standing.

One person wrote in to note that walkers and wheelchairs can decrease activity and lead to loss of strength and balance. Another recommended looking for hidden infections, such as in the urine.
