I have also been working with our Fire Chief and the West Sparta Fire Department to address concerns of properties that do not have addresses properly displayed. While out on inspections, I have found several properties that cannot be easily identified. Please note this is not only a requirement from NY State but it is also a great help to the fire and ambulance service if a property is easily identified by the address numbers and easily seen from the road. Should you have an emergency weather day or night and need assistance, first responders can find you faster and much easier. At this time we are asking all residents to please be sure your property is properly marked and markers are visible from the road, whether on the home, mailbox or both. Again, this is a code requirement under the 2015 International Property Maintenance Code as adopted by New York State. As inspections are made throughout town, those properties not properly marked will be noted. Please help us and help our first responders, should they ever be needed to find you quickly and safely.

Get to know cataracts risk factors As men and women age, they can experience certain physical changes and health challenges. Vision impairment is one condition that many associate with aging, and cataracts are a primary concern for those of middle-age and older.

Today, more than 22 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts. According to the National Eye Institute, by age 80, more than half of all Americans will either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery.

Cataract is clouding of the eye’s lens that blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye. Normally the lens is clear, which allows light to pass through to the back of the eye, so that a person can see well-defined images. If a cataract forms and the lens becomes covered in an opaque film, light cannot pass through easily. The result will be fuzzy vision, almost like looking through a fogged-up window. If cataracts are not treated, an individual may eventually lose most of his or her vision.

One or both eyes can be affected by cataracts. In the case of both eyes being compromised, one eye is usually worse than the other.

The primary risk factor for developing cataracts is age. The older a person is, the greater their risk. However, there are several other risk factors as well.

• Intense heat or long-term exposure to UV rays from the sun • Certain diseases, such as diabetes • Obesity • High blood pressure • Inflammation in the eye • Hereditary influences

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

And, as part of its new Healthy Eyes Educational Series, PBA offers a specific online module on cataracts, including a PowerPoint presentation and guide. The organization shares this information about cataracts: • Early symptoms of a cataract may include cloudy or blurry vision.

• Lights may cause a glare, seem too dim or seem too bright.

• Sufferers may also find it difficult to read or drive, especially at night.

• Individuals may have to change their eyeglass prescriptions often.

There are no medications or other treatment options besides surgery to correct cataracts. In the United States, cataract surgery has a 95 percent success rate, and patients often have 20/20 or 20/40 vision post-surgery. Cataract surgery is also the most frequently performed surgery, often performed as an outpatient procedure.

In Canada, where, according to Statistics Canada, seniors will make up 21 percent of the population by 2026, cataract surgery is also frequent and well tolerated. Approximately 250,000 cataract surgeries take place in Canada each year, according to The National Coalition for Vision Health.

It is widely recommended to get regular eye exams to check for cataracts early on.

“By getting a complete, dilated eye exam, your doctor can discuss with you the best strategy to protect your vision well into the future,” said Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness America.

“We encourage everyone, especially those ages 40 and older, to make their vision a priority by scheduling an eye appointment today.”

Mormon Service Teams Visit, Assist Heritage Square Museum

By Jim Switzer For the sixth year, Heritage Square Museum, located in the Town of Ontario, Wayne County, hosted work crews composed of cast and crew members from the Hill Cumorah Pageant for service projects on July 18th and 19th. Twenty-five volunteers visited over the two days and helped the landmark society finish several jobs on its “to do” list ranging from painting, weeding & property improvements to salvaging metal from broken items and removing & re-installing the flagstone walkway to the Alonzo Warner House (inventor of the differential).

In past years, these volunteers re-stained the Hojack train station and apple dry house and assisted in carpentry work for an addition to the Crombe Exhibit Barn. Because of July’s warm & humid weather, the service teams visit their sites between 1 and 5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday of pageant week. The volunteers are organized in teams of 20 to 30 persons representing several states and Canadian provinces as well as local and regional communities.

In addition to their cast & crew roles in the pageant, nearly 500 persons, ages 13 to 80-plus, contribute more than 1800 hours in service projects at local non-profit agencies and organizations. Volunteers are transported to service sites in Wayne, Monroe and Ontario counties, ranging from Canandaigua and Shortsville to Marion and Ontario Center and include planting, weeding, mulching, painting, carpentry, repairs and more.

“We truly enjoy these annual visits by the service team members and are most appreciative for their talents and skills,” noted Jim Switzer, project coordinator and past president of Heritage Square Museum which is owned and operated by the Ontario Historical & Landmark Preservation Society.

Suzanne Stockman coordinates the service teams for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons). She works throughout the year to plan, schedule and confirm work sites and logistics. Each service team includes adult supervisors who provide support and coordination with each local agency/site. She noted that “our annual service teams help us reach out, beyond ourselves, with love, and help make the world a better place.”

The museum was created some 50 years ago and includes 10 buildings and the state’s oldest & largest sugar maple tree on 15 acres on the west side of Ontario Center Road, approximately one-quarter mile from Lake Ontario and the Ginna Nuclear Power Station.

It operates totally with volunteers and sponsors several seasonal events, school tours & weekend guides. Along with the historic North Ontario Methodist “Brick” Church and the Pease Homestead, the 19th century era site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hill Cumorah Pageant is the world’s largest outdoor theatrical production. White-tailed deer are known to cause lots of trouble in suburban areas. Whether they are eating crops, ravaging gardens or jumping in front of

cars, it’s not hard to see why deer are considered pests in the Northeast. There is one deer that enjoys resting in a bed of flowers in front of my house and leaves a large area crushed in the morning.

Another (or maybe the same) deer has an appetite for the strawberries in my mother’s garden. Pesticides don’t work!

We set out a little blue cabinet in Henrietta and filled it with books. We were planning to use it as a Little Free Library for neighborhood kids. Sadly, before we were able to secure it and label it, someone stole it. Cabinet, books, base and all. If you or someone you know has taken it, please return it.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently spent four days in the hospital for a respiratory infection. I was not admitted to my primary-care doctor’s service, but had three names on my wristband. When I inquired as to who they were, I was told that they were hospitalists.

They would see me and communicate with my primary-care physician. I did not see the same doctor more than once in my four-day admission. When I saw my PCP after discharge, he did say he had been in contact with the hospitalists.

Is this common? Who is absorbing the cost? Does my PCP bill for consultation? -- M.M.E. ANSWER: Hospitalists are specialists in inpatient medicine.

Hospitalists typically have no outpatient responsibilities, and spend the entire day in the hospital taking care of admitted patients only.

Because they are constantly in the hospital, they usually can see an admitted patient more expeditiously than a doctor with outpatient responsibilities, and they tend to become expert and efficient at managing serious illness requiring hospitalization. Most studies comparing hospitalists with doctors who do both outpatient and inpatient medicine have shown that hospitalists facilitate decreased lengths of stay in the hospital and at least as good medical outcomes. The theory is that by specializing in just inpatient medicine, one can become expert as well as very efficient at using the resources available at a particular hospital.

The potential downside of hospitalists is that the personal knowledge about a particular patient isn’t as high. Your PCP knows you -- hopefully very well, if he or she has been taking care of you for a long time. Although your records may be available to the hospitalists, it isn’t the same as personal knowledge. That being said, with good communication (both ways) between your doctor and the hospitalists, the quality of care can be excellent.

There is no doubt that the hospitalist model is increasing in prevalence in the U.S. and Canada.

In answer to your question, your insurance company (or the government) pays the hospitalist directly. The PCP does not bill for consultation. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has Meniere’s disease.

We cannot find anyone who can help him. Is there any medication for this? -- L.M. ANSWER: Meniere’s disease causes episodes of vertigo, tinnitus and eventually hearing loss. It is caused by swelling in the organ of balance in the inner ear, but the reason for the swelling isn’t clear.

Before being seen by a doctor, your husband can try to identify triggers for the attacks. Common triggers include a high-salt diet, tobacco, alcohol and stress. A low-salt diet can dramatically reduce episodes.

ENT doctors are usually expert in treating Meniere’s disease. A diuretic such as hydrochlorothiazide often is used if diet alone doesn’t help.
