“I’m dreading fall. It is a terrifying season,” he says... “Everything shriveling up and dying.” I don’t know how to answer. Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale. I’ve never thought to be frightened of it. ~Lauren DeStefano, Wither

Turkey is often overshadow ed by other meats in refrigerated display cases, but it remains an excellent source of protein in a low -fat package. A typical 3.4- to four-ounce serving of skinless turkey breast (about the size of a deck of cards) contains around 30 grams of protein, providing about 65 percent of the average person’s recommended daily allotment of protein. Protein helps the body feel full and serves many essential functions in the body. Proteins regulate the entry of nutrients through cell w alls, help the body grow and help it to generate antibodies that fight against illness.

What is Plaid Friday? An alternative to Black Friday, it focuses on small business. On Plaid Friday, merchants in the community offer discounts exclusively to people wearing plaid. How did Plaid Friday start? It began in Oakland CA in 2009 with gallery owner Kerri Johnson. Tired of the focus being on big box stores, she thought it was time for local businesses to “weave together” (hence the plaid) and create their own event. This idea has since spread across the nation.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Children benefit in various ways from their involvement in youth sports. Being part of a team fosters feelings of belonging, inspires collaborative play and strategy and can be an excellent form of exercise. Still, despite the benefits, parents often worry about the injury risk their children face on the playing fields. Those fears are justified. A Safe Kids Worldwide survey of emergency room visits found that a young athlete visits a hospital emergency room for a sports-related injury more than a million times a year, or about every 25 seconds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 2.6 million children 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports- and recreation-related injuries. Some of the more common injuries young children face have to do with the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stresses that children’s bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are still growing, making them more susceptible to injury. Fortunately, with some education, many youth-sport injuries can be prevented.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: What are your thoughts on the pros and cons of HPV vaccine for boys? -- L.P.B. ANSWER: There are risks and benefits to the individual, but also benefits to society. The HPV vaccine should really be considered an anticancer vaccine, since its goal is to reduce infection from the kinds of human papilloma virus strains that can lead to cancer. Cervical cancer is the most common HPV-related cancer, but some throat, anal and genital cancers also are HPV-related. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are about 30,000 HPV-related cancers in the U.S. annually. It is possible but unproven that the HPV vaccine will provide protection against some or all of these. When given to girls or women who have not been infected with HPV, the HPV vaccine is nearly 100 percent effective at preventing persistent infection with the strains most likely to lead to cancer. In males age 16-26 years, the efficacy of the vaccine at preventing high-risk HPV-related warts was about 90 percent. However, the HPV vaccine is relatively new, and it is not clear how long immunity will last. It has been proven to last only eight to nine years, but studies looking at protection up to 15 years are ongoing. It is possible that additional boosters may be necessary. The most serious risk of HPV vaccine is anaphylaxis, a possibly fatal allergic reaction. There have been 36 cases of anaphylaxis reported in the world literature and through the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting system, according to the Institute of Medicine’s 2012 report on adverse effects of vaccines. There have been 67 million doses given, with a 0.003 percent rate of all adverse events, 90 percent of which were not considered serious. The most common nonserious adverse events in men were redness and soreness at the injection site, dizziness, headache and fainting. Among the adverse events considered serious, the most common were headache, nausea, vomiting and fever. The societal benefit to vaccinating boys is that they are less likely to spread infection to others. Since essentially all cases of cervical cancer are HPV-related, males are the most common source of infection (although it can be transmitted female to female). By vaccinating your boy, you are reducing his risk of developing HPV infection and might be decreasing his risk of several types of HPVrelated cancer, at a small risk of an adverse event, which is usually minor. However, probably the most compelling reason is to protect your son’s future sexual partners. Put in the starkest terms, you are reducing the risk that your future daughter-in-law will develop cervical cancer. *** DR. ROACH WRITES: Several people wrote to me about the symptom of burping. One physician recalled several cases where burping, not chest discomfort, was the major sign of a heart blockage. A reader observed belching in a family member who was later diagnosed with stomach cancer, and another noted gastroparesis as the cause. I think these are all unlikely but possible causes to be considered when the cause can’t be found and symptoms persist. Finally, one person wrote in that ginger solved her burping problem. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com. © 2018 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

lived in Branchport. He would come along with several of his girlfriends in tow each evening at dinnertime. When he finally trusted us enough to come to the vet, he was in rough shape: diabetes, asthma, FIV, and stomatitis. Because of the infection, he had to have all but one of his teeth pulled, and he’s strictly an indoor kitty now. As far as Carlton is concerned, though, he’s a normal, fully toothed cat and is very much in charge of the household. He loves to get spine rubs up and down his back. Despite being normally very polite, Carlton loses all his manners when there’s milk around...we’ve caught him a few times with his entire head in a near-empty glass of milk. We love Carlton, and are grateful everyday that he adopted us. Even with his rather rough start in life, he has turned out to be a wonderful pet. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although your energy level is high, be careful not to commit to too many projects at this time. You’ll do better focusing on just a few tasks rather than spreading yourself too thin. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your heart might be leading you in one direction, but pay attention to your keen Bovine intellect. I’m cautioning you to think things through before making any commitments. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your “serious” Twin has been dominant in your life for quite a while. It’s time now to let that “wilder” half take you out for some good times -- perhaps with someone very special. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Career aspects are high for Moon Children who make a good impression. Show people not only what you can already do, but also how you can be more valuable to them in the future. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Things start to brighten for the Lion’s immediate financial future. But be careful to resist the urge to splurge. You need to tuck something away to help you through another tight period. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Having to do too many tasks in too short a time could lower your mood to just above the grumbling level. But if you handle things one at a time, you’ll get through it all soon enough. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your usually carefully made holiday plans could be subject to change later this month. Use this week to prepare for that possibility by starting a Plan B just in case you need it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be careful about joining a colleague’s plan to solve a workplace problem. Investigate it thoroughly. Otherwise, you could find yourself in a predicament with other associates. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Slow down that highpaced whirl you’ve been on. Spending quiet time alone or with people you care for can be both physically and spiritually restorative. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Make suggestions, not demands. You’ll be more successful in getting people to follow your lead if you exercise quiet patience instead of strong persuasion to get your ideas across. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You still need more facts before you can make an informed career choice. One note of caution: Be careful about whom you ask for that information; otherwise, you could be misled. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Changing situations through the end of the week could lead to some challenging opportunities for those perspicacious Pisceans who know how to make them work to their advantage. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of being both daring and cautious, traits that could make you a research scientist or maybe even a rocket-ship designer. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Plaid Friday: Plaid is the New Black By Amanda Dudek
You’ve heard it before: “I saw this, and it just made me think of you!” Maybe you thought, Am I really the kind of person that makes people think of oversized fuchsia slippers? Don’t blame yourself. You’re yet another victim of one-size-fits-all gifting, but move over, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. There’s a new player this season: Plaid Friday. It all started in Oakland, California in 2009 when gallery owner, Kerri Johnson, grew tired of the seasonal shopping focus repeatedly being on the big box stores. Deciding it was time for local business owners to “weave together” and take back holiday shopping, Johnson created the local business event that is sweeping the nation: Plaid Friday. Now, on Plaid Friday, local businesses across the United States are offering specials to customers who shop while wearing plaid as a gesture of solidarity with both these local businesses and their communities. Not only are you practically guaranteed to choose more unique gifts, but shopping Plaid on Friday offers a host of other benefits, as well. Shopping local has a greater positive impact on your local economy. Local businesses pay local taxes. They hire local people. They also tend to source their goods locally. According to the Institute for Local self-reliance’s 2016 article, Amazon’s Stranglehold, compared to Amazon, independent retailers create 2x as many jobs for the same amount of revenue. Similarly, according to the Andersonville Study of Retail Economics, local business generates 70 percent more local economic activity per square foot than big box retail. According to another statistic, money spent at a local business generates 2.5x more wealth for the local economy compared to money spent at a chain-owned business. Local money spent locally stays and grows local communities; it’s that simple. If every family in the United States spent an extra $10 a month at a locally owned, independent business instead of at a national chain, over $9.3 billion would be directly returned to our economy. Shopping local puts you in touch with local expertise. According to the Codex Group in its article, “why Online Book Discovery is Broken (and How to Fix It),” one learns that at a local store, you are as much as 3x more likely to discover something “New.” Independent, local retailers have a great deal more freedom to choose which products they sell, and they typically choose products with
which they have experience and which they trust. Different products at each local retailer mean a greater diversity of products, and more options tends to increase the chances that consumers will be able to find a more exact fit for their needs and wants. Additionally, local businesses are often able to offer more individualized attention and assistance to their customers, making certain they find the best possible options to suit their needs. Shopping local is better for the environment. Shopping local helps reduce the amount of international shipping and transport involved in commerce. Therefore, it also reduces processing, packaging and transportation waste, leading to less pollution because of this shipping and transport. Local businesses tend to use more locally-produced goods and local resources. These local, independent businesses are also much more likely to reuse materials, conserving both resources and energy. Shopping local builds community involvement. When you are out shopping in your community, you have greater chances of meeting and talking with your fellow community members. You are more likely to become involved with your fellow community members and, therefore, in your community, as well. Meanwhile, your locally spent dollars can make the difference between success and failure for several local businesses while helping to maintain community life. Start the Plaid tide in your community this shopping season. Look for your local Genesee Valley Penny Saver’s Directory of Participating Merchants for up-to-date, insider information on your community’s Plaid Friday specials. Shop fun; shop smart; shop local!

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Pros and cons to early retirement A lifetime of working compels many people to look forward to their retirement. Some people even work to retire early. But what are the advantages of early retirement beyond starting a life of leisure? And are there any detriments to this plan? A 2014 survey by the financial services provider TIAA-CREF found that 37 percent of Americans plan to retire before age 65. However, many of them will not have control over the matter. Those who do may want to consider the pros and cons of early retirement. Advantages Many people seek early retirement so that they can live a life free of the constraints of schedules. In retirement, time becomes, more or less, a retiree’s own. Leaving a job can be a boon to a person’s health as well. Relieving oneself of the pressures and stresses of professional life can free up the mind and body. Stress can affect mental and physical health, taxing the heart and contributing to conditions such as depression or anxiety. According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can cause headache, muscle and chest pain and contribute to trouble sleeping. The earlier the retirement, the more opportunity to travel before health issues begin to limit mobility. Early retirement also can be a way to volunteer more or even start a new job opportunity — one where workers have greater control over their schedules and careers. Disadvantages One of the disadvantages of early retirement is a loss of income. Contributions to retirement accounts also ceases at retirement. This can lead to financial setbacks if adequate
LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE AFTER 50 (NAPSI)—For many people, navigating life and love as they get older can be challenging. Adjusting to change, seeking a new partner, or simply breaking out of a rut may feel overwhelming. In the hilarious hit comedy “Book Club,” four mature women in different circumstances discover that you’re never too old to enjoy life or pursue love. That’s a message author and newspaper columnist Tom Blake agrees with wholeheartedly. Blake has written more than 4,000 articles and newsletters on the topic and offers this advice, which is reflected in the movie: 1. Give love a chance in later years: Put yourself out there; everyone deserves love. 2. Don’t worry about what others think: Do what’s right for you. 3. Loosen up: Don’t be too set in your ways. 4. Change your routine: Be open to new experiences. 5. Don’t let your children make decisions for you: No one knows you better than you. 6. Have fun: Don’t stop living before you stop living! In “Book Club,” legendary actresses Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star respectively as a widow, single, divorcée and long-married woman who hilariously shake up their lives by diving into the infamous book “Fifty Shades of Grey.” From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, the lifelong friends inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter. “’Book Club’ has wonderful messages about never giving up on life or love no matter how old you are,” said Blake. “Good things can happen when you venture out and meet new people.” To liven up your life, check out “Book Club” on DVD, Blu-ray or iTunes and go to www.FindingLoveAfter50.com for more tips from Blake.
savings were not allocated for retirement. According to the resource Wealth How, some people who retire early fear outliving their savings. While retiring early may be good for health, it also can have negative consequences. An analysis from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that retirement can lead to declines in mental health and mobility as well as feelings of isolation. Retiring early may jump start these health implications. Another consideration is that health insurance provided by an employer typically ends at retirement. That means having to pay out of pocket until a person ages into government-subsidized healthcare, such as Medicare in the United States, at age 65. Retiring early is a complex issue that requires weighing the pros and cons.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

Thank you, Victor Merchants Group. We attended the annual Victor Spooktacular event that commenced at the Six50 restaurant on Route 96. We want to thank Matt, the manager, as well as all the organizers, and the participating vendors! It was a fun, adult event that allowed us to get to know the local businesses, most of which we would not have encountered prior to this adventure. We look forward to next year’s route. Continued success to all! November 1st is All Saints Day - With the horrible tragedy that just happened a few days ago, committed by a sick person, I will pray for healing for all and who have had tragedies in their lives.
I think you need to go back and relearn some lessons, mainly some history lessons and some moral lessons as well. Last time I checked, this is a free country. Which means the person you are complaining about has every right to fly their nation's flag as you have every right to fly yours. Attempting to take that away takes away from the fact that we are a FREE country. And on the moral side of things, "Judge not, lest ye be judged," "Love

Additionally, I will pray for healing of America that people with different views will learn to respect others who may not have the same views but realize that even though a person doesn't agree with you, that's okay. Each person is different, but that's what it means to be an American; that is the beauty of this great country: that we are all Americans. America is a great nation, and we should celebrate it and not condemn it. Whether it's good, bad, and ugly, it is still a nation of freedom, but freedom does take responsibility. To RESPECT one another is one of the costs, and to obey American laws is another cost, but worth it. A shout out to Village of LeRoy Police Department for

We also were impressed with the teenagers of the community, they were so polite when asking for candy and most of them left the porch with “Thank you so much, have a great night!” Love our small town! Brightened Up the Day! A local farmer planted a field of beautiful sunflowers and then placed a sign that they were free for anyone who wished to pick them. When did traffic signs become simply suggestions? I live on a busy city street where the speed limit is 30 mph, but the average speed is around 45 to 50. Traveling through stop signs and lights has become driving as usual. Right on red after stop has

become 'yield' if you're lucky. And do folks have so much to talk about that their phone can't be put down long enough to get where they're going?
