UNIQUE WAYS TO CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for couples to celebrate their love for each other, whether their relationship is relatively new or has endured through many years. The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans are expected to spend close to $20 billion on Valentine’s Day this year. While chocolates and champagne are high on the list of most-purchased items for February 14th, couples should not feel beholden to tradition on Valentine’s Day. This year may be the perfect time to try something new, even if it’s out of couples’ comfort zones. Here are some novel ideas for couple’s looking to set their celebrations apart. Paint and sip: Couples can take part in a growing trend this Valentine’s Day. At paint-and-sip events, people are guided step-by-step through the process of painting their own masterpieces. Breaks are provided through the evening to indulge in beverages and snacks of choice. Couples can bring along a bottle or two of wine and a platter of cheeses, chocolates or other Valentine’s Day fare. Those interested can inquire at their nearest paint and sip location, such as Pinot’s Palette, for Valentine’s Day specials. Activity night: Couples who are naturally competitive or devoted sports fans can enjoy the evening by engaging in some healthy competition.
Some restaurants host trivia nights, or couples can head to the nearest arcade and battle it out. Panic and escape rooms are cropping up in towns across the country. These employ 60-minute real-life experiences in which participants must solve clues to escape the room. This can be a great bonding experience for fun-loving couples. Chef lessons: Although some couples may dine out on Valentine’s Day, men and women who like to dabble in culinary arts can prepare their own meals from the comforts of their own kitchens. Others may want to enroll in classes that provide expert instruction from area chefs or culinary instructors. Cooking classes can be an ideal way to spend time together learning skills that can be put to use again and again. Adventures: Couples who like to push the envelope can explore the possibilities of thrill-seeking activities. Some may include bungeejumping, hot-air balloon rides, taking laps at the racetrack, or hitting the ski slopes. Valentine’s Day might be a time for romance, but couples should not hesitate to buck tradition and spend the day together engaging in activities that accommodate their interests.

Winter Emergency Kit: In case of emergencies, you may get stuck or need to spend time in your car waiting for help. Make sure that your vehicle is equipped to handle a wide range of scenarios. Always be sure to carry a tire gauge, jack and fully inflated spare. If you get stuck, you’ll be glad to have a shovel and gravel, salt or a small piece of carpet for traction. Jumper cables or even a portable charger can help address battery related problems. Maximize your safety with emergency flares and a firstaid kit. In addition, stash a small supply of non-perishable food and water, as well as warm clothes or a blanket, especially if you’ll be driving lesser-traveled roads.

The Battle of Oriskany: Central New York Turns the Tide T
he Battle of Oriskany State Historic Site, located about two hours east of Rochester, preserves the site of a very important Revolutionary War battle fought on August 6, 1777. The result of this battle between American militia and British military forces helped set the stage for an American victory several months later in one of the most important battles in the history of the world: the Battle of Saratoga. The American victory at Saratoga was arguably the turning point in the Revolutionary War. The actual fighting of the Revolutionary War started on April 19, 1775 at Lexington and Concord, just outside of Boston. By 1777, the War was focused mainly in the Northern colonies, and no clear victor had yet emerged. The British strategy to defeat the American “rebels’ in 1777 was to invade the newly independent colonies from Canada by advancing down the Lake Champlain corridor to Albany and then to unite with other British forces moving north from New York City. These movements would be supported by a third British army coming east from Oswego through the Mohawk Valley. The three armies would converge near Albany. The effects of these actions were intended to isolate New England from the rest of the colonies. The British believed that once New England was conquered, the remaining colonies would quickly capitulate. The British plan called for General Barry St. Leger to take his army to Oswego, follow the Oswego River to Lake Oneida, then follow Wood Creek to the “Oneida carrying place” portage. From there St. Leger would follow the Mohawk River to its mouth at the Hudson River and unite with Generals Burgoyne and Howe. Part of this plan required that St. Leger capture the American Fort guarding the six mile portage between Wood Creek and the Mohawk River. That fort was Fort Stanwix which the British had assumed they could capture with little difficulty. They were very wrong. St. Leger and his forces arrived in front of Fort Stanwix on August 2, 1777, and immediately began a siege. In the meantime, word of St. Leger’s attack on Fort Stanwix had reached American militia elements in Tryon County. As a result, a relief force made up of Tryon County militia was formed thirty miles southeast of Fort Stanwix. This force was commanded by General Nicholas Herkimer and consisted of eight hundred volunteer militia (mostly farmers). General Herkimer and his men began marching toward Fort Stanwix on August 4th.
Obelisk at Oriskany; Photo by David MacNab
St. Leger learned of General Herkimer’s advancing militia. To counter this threat, St. Leger dispatched a sizable portion of his forces, including some British allied Mohawk Indians, to intercept the Americans before they could reach the fort. The British plan was to set up an ambush along the road which they knew General Herkimer must take to get to the fort. As the sun was coming up on the morning of August 6, the British ambushers were in their places along the road, six miles east of Fort Stanwix. About 10:00AM, General Herkimer and his men had passed through a ravine and were ascending the high ground to the west of it, when the British ambushers opened fire. General Herkimer and his men became the objects of blistering musket fire from three sides
Fort Stanwix National Monument; Photo by David MacNab
delivered by the British and their Indian allies. General Herkimer himself had been among the first casualties when a musket ball shattered his leg and killed his horse. Although his men wanted him to retire from the fight, the General would have none of it. Instead, he had some of his men prop him up under a Beech tree where he continued to direct his soldiers and smoke his pipe. The intense fire fight had been going on for forty five minutes when a sudden rainstorm forced a halt to the proceedings. General Herkimer took advantage of the rain delay to order his men to pair up so as to be sure that one of the men was loaded and ready to fire at attackers while the second man reloaded. After an hour the rain stopped and the battle began anew. Now, the British allied Indians were beginning to be seriously affected by their severe losses caused by the Americans’ ferocious resistance. The Indians had lost a number of chiefs and were rapidly losing interest in continuing the battle. Retreating to their camps outside of Fort Stanwix, the discouraged Indians began leaving the area and heading home. With his forces depleted and more Patriots on the way led by American General Benedict Arnold - St. Leger was forced to abandon his mission and retreat all the way back into Canada. Thus, St. Leger was unable to provide critical support to the main British forces now nearing Saratoga just north of Albany. As a result, the large British army led by General John Burgoyne was forced to surrender to American forces on October 17, 1777. The brave farmers of the Tryon County militia, by stopping St. Leger’s advance, had made a significant contribution to the American victory at Saratoga which is considered by many to be the turning point of the Revolutionary War. Both Fort Stanwix and the Oriskany Battlefield are exciting historic sites administered by the National Park Service. Fort Stanwix is located within the city limits of Rome, N.Y. and the Oriskany Battlefield is just six miles further east. They are available for visitors to enjoy, and there are excellent visitors’ centers at both locations staffed by National Park Service Rangers. WHY IS VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATED ON FEBRUARY 14TH? Sweethearts who want to keep their relationships running strong know that Valentine’s Day is celebrated each year on February 14. But even the most ardent Valentine’s Day enthusiast might not know just why this day designed for lovers to express their affections for one another is celebrated in mid-February. According to the Library of Congress, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14, though the date might have ties to the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia. Lupercalia was a spring festival celebrated each year on February 15. The holiday was moved to February 14 after the spread of Christianity. The Christian faith had several early martyrs named Valentine, and each of them were celebrated with a saint day on February 14. But the unique history of Valentine’s Day and its association with February 14 as well as its romantic sentiments does not end there. The Library of Congress also notes that, in the Middle Ages, people believed birds selected their mates on February 14. As a result, it was not uncommon for lovers to recite prose to one another on this date.

Considered to be one of the most romantic countries in the world, France can be an ideal place to participate in Valentine’s Day traditions. The French have an old custom called “une loterie d’amour,” which is a drawing for love. Single men and women of all ages once entered houses that faced one another and took turns calling out to one another to find romantic matches. The men could refuse the match and leave the woman looking for another man to call on. Women who were not paired up would light a bonfire and damn the men who rejected them. The French government eventually banned the practice because of rowdy crowds.

Is anybody upset about a recent change to our [local restaurant] here in our [local town]? The beautiful landscaping was destroyed and the building was made to have a cold appearance. Our [local town] certainly deserved better than this monstrosity. Recently my friend and I went to lunch at a small restaurant in our [local town]. The room was crowded, and we were all very close. In came a woman with a severe bronchial infection and sat
at the table right next to us. She proceeded to cough her way through the entire lunch, disregarding all the patrons around her. Both of us now have severe colds. Ironically, we are both infectious disease nurses. Please stay home and keep your germs to yourself. To the driver of a purple vehicle: Slow down before you kill someone! After the town hall meeting addressing public water access, I left disgusted at my “neighbors” and local farmer’s negative and uninformed opinions. With climate changing, many residential wells don’t produce water like they used to. Can the farm’s water be next? Then what? Public water causes autism due
to medical waste in the lakes? Now there’s a real reason to be against it. The air we breathe is polluted so stop breathing. If you prefer your washed clothes to be gray or dingy or nasty teeth due to drinking your well water so be it. I don’t. My well is good, but I want better! I want my neighbors’ water to be better! I would gladly give up vices to help my neighbor. “Move back to the city” What a GREAT answer! It may not cost you as much if you do your homework. I am so upset that someone can hit my car and take off without reporting it or leaving a note. They had to know they hit my car because the bumper and the hatchback is dented; also, the taillight was broken. I know that accidents happen, but to just leave is totally WRONG!
Brighter Side The Memorial Day Detachment # 468 of the Marine Corps League would like to thank everyone who donated to the Toys for Tots campaign this year. The generosity of everyone who donated or provided a space for our collection boxes enabled us to distribute over 6200 toys to children who might otherwise not have received any toys for Christmas. We appreciate the agencies and individuals who helped to distribute the toys to the individuals who were in need. We look forward to working with everyone again next year. Big thank you to a worker at Advantage Auto Stores who changed my plates for
me at no charge. Having a small infant and a husband away on business, this act of kindness really meant a lot to me. We went to KRONY’S on Jan. 4th. My family and I ordered pizza, which is always YUMMY! We decided to try Stromboli’s and must say that they were EXCEPTIONAL! Next time, I will request more ricotta, and I’m sure they will accommodate my needs, because when you go to Krony’s, they go out of their way to make your dining experience a pleasant one. As soon as I walked in JOEY greeted me by NAME!!
He is ALWAYS nice, as well as CINDY. No matter what kind of a day they are having, they always make the customers feel welcomed and appreciated. What more could anyone ask for?? Delicious food coupled with wonderful employees who make the visit such a delight! A shout out to JOEY, CINDY, and all the other hard-working employees!!!! We LOVE KRONY’S! Thank you to the gentleman who stopped to help me, after I skidded off the road into a ditch in my Tahoe on Rt. 21 in Manchester, Sun., Dec. 30th, 2018 at 6:15 AM. He was pulling out of his driveway as it happened. I am so thankful for his help. I was a little disoriented and did not get his name. He got
in my vehicle and got it out of the ditch and back on Rt. 21. Thank you so much for your help and being there to help. It is nice to know that there are people out there willing to help!

The number of people who smoke is on the decline, as a 2018 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the percentage of adults in the United States who smoke cigarettes declined from roughly 21 percent in 2005 to 15.5 percent in 2016. That decline has no doubt helped reduce overall cancer death rates, though the figures regarding smoking-related deaths are still staggering. According to the CDC, smoking accounts for more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. The 2018 report from the CDC indicates that men (17.5 percent) are more likely than women (13.5 percent) to smoke cigarettes. In addition, the report notes a correlation between education and the likelihood of smoking cigarettes. While smoking was lowest among people who had graduate degrees, with only five out of every 100 such adults being smokers, smoking rates were highest (40.6 percent) among adults with graduate education degree certificates, or GEDs. While people who had no high school diploma were less likely to smoke cigarettes than GED recipients, the CDC report found that smoking rates declined the more education people received.

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF WATER
Paige M. Helfer, Au. D.
Water can help people maintain healthy weights. Dieting fads come and go, but water is a mainstay for people who want to control their caloric intake in an effort to maintain healthy weights. Water has zero calories, so reaching for a bottle or glass of water instead of a soda, lemonade or another caloric beverage can help people keep the pounds off. A study from researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center found that even diet soda enhances weight gain by as much as 41 percent. In addition, soda has been linked to conditions such as obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. No such association exists with water.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Is Big and Tall Patient Getting Petite-Size Meds?
--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 71 years old, stand 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weigh 325 pounds. The “average” person is half my size, yet when I get medication for various ailments (e.g., gout, pain, flu shots, etc.) I get the standard dose. I assume I have more physical mass as well as a larger blood supply, which leads me to the conclusion that I am receiving a smaller concentration of medicine than the typical patient. Am I correct? -- M.K. ANSWER: All medicines have concentrations at which they work optimally. Too low a dose and they aren’t effective, and too high a dose increases risk of toxicity. Some drugs have a very small range that’s both effective and nontoxic, and these are referred to as having a “narrow toxic to therapeutic ratio.” Others have a very large range where they are effective and nontoxic, such as most over-the-counter pain medicines and flu shots. Penicillin has a very wide toxic to therapeutic ratio, but I use that example precisely because some people will have an allergic reaction. There is no drug -- prescribed, over-the-counter or supplement -that is either perfectly safe while being effective, or perfectly effective while being safe, for every person. The concentration of the drug in the appropriate area of the body (sometimes blood, sometimes the affected organ, sometimes urine) may depend on the dose as well as your characteristics. Despite being much larger than average, your blood volume is probably only a little above the average, since the increased bone mass, muscle mass and, in most people your size, fat mass are disproportionate to the blood. Some medicines go to the blood, others to “lean body mass” and still others preferentially to fat. So while you are correct that you are getting a smaller concentration of medicine, that’s still OK most of the time. For medications that need to be dosed precisely, those with a narrow toxic to therapeutic ratio (such as some antibiotics, heart medication and chemotherapy), the dosing is based on height, weight, age and sometimes kidney and liver function. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 80 years old, in good health with no cancer in the family. Up to now, I have always had regular Pap smears and mammograms. Now I am aware that there are different thoughts as to whether those tests are needed at my age. What is your advice? -- J.G. ANSWER: For Pap smears, there is very good evidence that women who have never had any problems with their Pap smears by age 65 are very unlikely to ever develop any, and I agree with the recommendation by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force to stop them at age 65. Mammograms are more controversial, but my personal practice is to continue to recommend them for most women until about age 75. I stop recommending mammograms to women when they have an underlying medical condition that makes it unlikely that they will receive benefit from continued screening. Deciding when that is takes some experience and a lot of discussion with the patient and sometimes her family. There is no absolute age cutoff for mammograms, and getting a mammogram on a healthy 80-year-old might make sense. Getting a mammogram on a woman with incurable lung cancer, for example, does not. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Colder Weather: How To Manage Your Blood Pressure & Health High blood pressure means that the force of blood pushing through your body is too strong. In colder weather, blood vessels constrict more than normal, which raises blood pressure. • Practice healthy habits: Being physically active, eating healthy & limiting alcohol can be critical to managing your high blood pressure year round, especially during fall and winter. Try to get up and move for at least 30 minutes each day. As the weather changes, modify your exercise routine to include raking leaves, shoveling snow or walking indoors at a mall. • Measure and monitor your blood pressure regularly. Blood pressure monitors are inexpensive and can be purchased at pharmacies and other stores. Many supermarkets and pharmacies have machines that take and record your blood pressure. More than one in three Americans have high blood pressure. To measure, monitor and maintain your blood pressure all year round and learn more about this disease, please visit MeasureUpPressureDown.com.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Doing something nice for others is typical of the generous Arian. But be prepared for some jealous types who might try to question one of your more recent acts of kindness. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re eager to take on new responsibilities. But before you do, you might want to check out exactly what would be required of you so that you don’t face any “surprises” later. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It might be best to put off an important decision until a fluctuating situation becomes more stable. Recently received news could help resolve a long-standing family matter. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) If you still have a problem getting that information gap closed, you might consider asking a higher authority to resolve the matter, leaving you free to move on to another project. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A family matter needs to be dealt with at the start of the week. Once it’s resolved, the Big Cat can devote more attention to that new opportunity that seems to hold so much potential. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Pay attention to those niggling doubts. They could be warning you not to make any major decisions until you’ve checked them out -- especially where money matters might be involved. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business venture might need more of your attention than you are able to provide. Consider asking a trusted friend or family member to help you work through this time crunch. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A more-positive aspect helps you get a clearer focus on how to handle your time so that you can deal with several responsibilities that are just now showing up on your schedule. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A very close friend (you know who that is!) has advice that could help you work through a confusing situation. So put your pride aside and ask for it. You’ll be glad you did. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace situation could turn a bit tense. The best way to handle it is to confront it and deal with it openly. Doing so can help reveal the underlying reasons for the problem. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A colleague’s remarks appear to be especially cutting. But don’t waste your time or your energy trying to deal with the situation. You have more important things to do. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Support for your work comes as a surprise from someone you thought was critical or, at least, indifferent. Your spouse or partner has big plans for the weekend. BORN THIS WEEK: Your spiritual strength often acts as an inspiration to help others make decisions about their lives. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

(NAPS)—Home care agencies often see a surge in calls in late December and early January. Why? Many grown children head home for the holidays and notice their aging parents need some help. Here are ways to tell: Take The Sniff Test - Breathe in that holiday hug. If you notice unclean clothes or an uncharacteristic body odor, that could signal that a parent is having trouble bathing, maintaining personal hygiene or keeping up with household chores such as laundry. Next, follow your nose to the kitchen. Open the fridge. You’ll notice pretty quickly if there’s spoiled food—but your parents may not. The sense of smell diminishes with age, expecially after 70. Many seniors can’t detect unpleasant odors that would normally tell them it’s time to toss last week’s meat loaf. If the sniff test reveals some olfactory oddities, it might not just be “normal aging.” Diminished sense of smell can be an early indicator of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. If you sense something isn’t quite right, help Mom or Dad to set up a doctor’s visit to see if there’s something else going on. Have A Look Around - Your childhood home may look the same as ever—but it may not work as well for older adults. As people age, their environment typically needs simple upgrades to keep them safe. You can significantly reduce fall risks by taping down throw rugs, removing extra furniture, securing electrical cords out of pathways and adding grab bars in the bathroom. Pay attention to clutter as well. Stacks of unopened mail, broken appliances or drooping houseplants may also signal a need for help. Being unable to manage everyday activities can be a symptom of depression or of cognitive impairment, which often presents like depression. If you see any of the above warning signs, you may want to arrange for your parent to see a doctor and for family members or professional caregivers to stop by and help with projects and chores. Just knowing your parents have help and resources can relieve worry, both yours and theirs. Listen Up - Is the TV or radio volume blaring? Are conversations repeated? Does Mom keep asking “what?” or just smiling and nodding instead of participating? Don’t brush it off. Difficulty following conversations may be a sign of hearing loss, cognitive impairment or both. Seniors who begin losing their hearing are at greater risk of developing dementia over time since hearing is a brain function. Sometimes, hearing aids stimulate the sounds needed for the brain to restore organization and correctly process sounds. Making Sense Of Your Senses - Talking to parents about warning signs you’ve noticed isn’t fun. But do it anyway. Let them know you want to be involved to help them stay independent for as long as possible. Even if you live far away there’s a lot you can do, such as scheduling appointments and finding help with transportation, chores and projects. Talk to nearby family members about how they can help out or set up a visit with a home care agency that can provide ongoing support. Fear of losing independence keeps a lot of seniors tight lipped.

DID YOU KNOW? In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).
