MAKE CUT FLOWERS LAST LONGER Treat the water To preserve flowers, do your best to reduce bacteria, provide a food source for the flowers and manage the pH so that the uptake of water will continue to be strong. Sugar can be an adequate food source. Gardenista, a floral arrangement and gardening resource, tested a variety of methods for preserving flowers and found much of the same results across the board. These included vinegar and sugar, conventional flower food, bleach, aspirin, and a penny. The bleach, aspirin, copper penny, and vinegar work as antibacterial agents. The sugar and the plant food help nourish the blooms. In the trials, most of the blooms remained strong for three to four days.

70th Anniversary Series- Volume 8 Our Mission… We’re in the business of helping you reach your customers through advertising, printing, direct mail and promotional products… It’s a tall order, but we’re up for the challenge. The Genesee Valley Penny Saver was our first endeavor 70 years ago and continues on as the cornerstone of our business today. However, through the years, as different needs for advertising developed, we began to stretch our capabilities to include many other avenues in which advertisers could reach their customers. In 1993 we redesigned our business structure and began Penny Lane Printing, a sister corporation to the Genesee Valley Penny Saver. Although we had been doing printing up until then, Penny Lane Printing gave us the opportunity to market ourselves as a premier source of all things printed: Stationery, business cards, newsletters, posters, flyers, calendars, signage and publications of all sorts. We pride ourselves on our talented Creative Team who use their expertise to incorporate your ideas into dynamic designs for every facet of Penny Lane as well as Penny Saver. Custom designed invitations, save-the-dates, response cards for weddings and graduations have become a nice addition to our print work. (We will feature our Creative Department in a future volume.) Within Penny Lane Printing, we have the Penny Express division which processes virtually any direct mail piece that is delivered by the U.S. Postal Service. Our mailing software has quarterly updates and gets the best discounts. Penny Lane Promotional Products is our division that can provide you with thousands of different specialty items including t-shirts, banners, pens, mugs, glassware, hats, business incentive awards, to name a few. And on our website, GVPennySaver.com, all our GVPS ads appear online. You can also promote your business through banner advertising, view our weekly online editions, take advantage of our weekly coupon club and promote your business with electronic direct mail. Our online experts can even design custom websites. Staying true to our Mission Statement, we are always working on new and different ways for our customers to make the most of the dollars they spend to reach their customers. …stay tuned for volume 9 next month

Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

533-9307 H O R O SC O P E S ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your soft-hearted self is drawn to a tempting offer. But your hard-headed half isn’t so sure. Best advice: Do it only after every detail is checked out to your liking. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your inventive mind should help you find a way to get around an apparently impassable barrier and make yourself heard. Your efforts get you noticed by the right people. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re enjoying this creative period. But by midweek, you’ll need to emphasize your more pragmatic talents as you consider a risky but potentially lucrative move. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) An unexpected rejection could turn into something positive if you pocket your pride and ask for advice on how you can make changes that will make the difference. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your Lion’s heart gives you the courage to push for answers to a job-related situation. Stay with it. You’ll soon find more believers coming out the ranks of the doubters. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your curiosity pays off this week as you push past the gossip to find the facts. What you ultimately discover could lead you to make some changes in your plans. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A new sense of enthusiasm helps get you out of on-the-job doldrums and back into a productive phase. Family matters also benefit from your more positive attitude. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A bit of nostalgia is fine. But don’t stay back in the past too long or you might miss seeing the signpost up ahead pointing the way to a new opportunity. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) If you feel you need to take more time to study a situation before making a decision, do so. Don’t let anyone push you into acting until you’re ready. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) As the Great Advice Giver, the Goat really shines this week as family and friends seek your wisdom. Someone especially close to you might make a surprising request. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Spiritual concerns dominate part of the week before more worldly matters demand your attention. An old promise resurfaces with some surprises attached. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’re in a highly productive period and are eager to finish all the projects you’ve taken on. But don’t let yourself get swamped. Take a breather now and again. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for learning new things quickly and applying your knowledge to best advantage where needed. Fainting spells for elderly linked to blood clots Falls are one of the greatest risk factors for injury among the aging population. When falls are attributed to fainting spells, people may be very eager to get to the source of the fall. Doctors have found that blood clots may attribute to fainting in the elderly. Information published in the journal Clinical Geriatric Medicine found that the elderly are at a higher risk of blood clots because of their reduced mobility. Blood clots may result in deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, and could lead to a pulmonary embolism if left untreated. DVT is a common problem involving the veins of the legs. Blood pooling in the legs may cause a blood clot to form in the deep veins of the lower leg, impairing blood flow back to the heart. A pulmonary embolism, or PE, occurs when a clot dislodges from the leg veins and travels through the bloodstream to reach the heart and lungs. According to the health site Aging Care, as many as one million Americans suffer from blood clots every year, often resulting in hospitalization. While swelling in the legs, cramping in the lower legs, skin color changes, and warmth of the skin where the clot is located can signal a problem, symptoms of a PE may vary greatly. Shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and rapid or irregular heartbeat can all occur, says The Mayo Clinic. Researchers are finding that, in some cases, fainting episodes also may be indicative of a PE. Italian researchers revealed that, among 560 patients hospitalized for a first-time fainting spell, one in six had a PE.
Certain risk factors put people at a higher chance for DVT and PE. These include: • prior surgery • certain cancers • cardiovascular disease • bed rest that causes blood to pool • sitting for long periods of time • smoking • being overweight
People who are experiencing fainting spells should be on the radar for other symptoms of PE, advises the American College of Chest Physicians. However, it’s important to note that fainting can be attributed to dehydration, a drop in blood pressure and heart-rhythm disturbances.
Use of compression stockings to move blood more efficiently, physical activity, leg elevation, anticoagulants, and pneumatic compression can help prevent the formation of clots. Because PE can be life-threatening, people experiencing fainting or other symptoms are urged to speak with their doctors.

TREATING DEPRESSION Depression is a very treatable condition. Psychotherapy (talk therapy), medications or a combination thereof can be very effective in managing symptoms. Mental health professionals can work with individuals to find the right therapy based on symptoms and severity of the depression. Also, it may take some time to find the right medication or treatment; therefore, people are urged to remain patient and hopeful. The National Institute of Mental Health says people who suspect they may be suffering from depression should make an appointment to see a doctor or health care provider. The sooner action is taken, the more quickly the condition can be addressed.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: The senior center in my community is kept at a temperature that I and many other seniors find too cool for our comfort. After two hours of playing Scrabble or watching a film, we feel chilled to the bone. We have complained many times to the management, with no change. Recently, I overheard an employee explain to a complainer that the center maintains the cool temperature to keep the germ count in the air down in order to promote a healthy environment. I know very warm temperatures can promote germ growth (anyone in Bacteriology 101 has seen it proven), but would raising the temperature from 72 F to 75 F have any bad effect on the air quality? -- H.L. ANSWER: In bacteriology, most of what we did was in incubators at 37 degrees Celsius (about 99 degrees F), an optimal growth temperature for most pathogenic bacteria in or on a growth medium. However, I was surprised to find that hotter temperatures, in general, tend to reduce both viruses and bacteria in the air. So there’s no validity to the employee’s claim. The people controlling the temperature (the staff ) probably are more comfortable at a cooler temperature than the seniors taking advantage of the senior center (there are many reasons for this). Your suggestion of 75 F seems a perfectly reasonable temperature to me, but maybe it’s worth finding out what most of the community wants. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My doctor will not issue maintenance medication prescriptions for longer than three months. My insurance company has sent me many emails asking me to have him write them for the year, and when I mention it to him, he just refuses. I have been seeing him for five years, and everything is just fine. All bloodwork numbers are excellent. He has just posted a sign in his office that no prescriptions will be refilled without an office visit, so I am not the only one subject to this policy. We like this doctor, but we think this practice is somewhat overbearing, if not unethical. I’d like my prescription to be for a year because we are retired and travel. In the past, more than once I have had to call my pharmacy and have refills sent to another address. This doctor will not respond to calls from a pharmacy for refills; only a visit will do. Is there anything that can be done other than changing doctors? -- A. ANSWER: I wouldn’t say that this practice is unethical. Physicians need to decide for themselves how comfortable they are in treating chronic conditions without seeing their patients for a prolonged period. His method ensures very regular follow-up, and he is likely to find changes to your condition more quickly than if he wrote yearly prescriptions. On the other hand, many people don’t need such close follow-up, and it is significantly less convenient for many. The bottom line is, no matter what his motivation for such a policy, those who find this too much of an inconvenience probably would do better with a different provider. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. St. Agnes School’s Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest Winners By Karin Fetzner Avon, N.Y.: St. Agnes School participated in the 2018 Zaner-Bloser 27th Annual National Handwriting Contest. The school encourages excellence in all educational endeavors. Good penmanship is part of the course of study at the school. Children begin to practice cursive handwriting at the end of the Second Grade and further mastery is taught in the Third Grade. Beginning at the Fourth Grade level, students are expected to complete all written work in cursive. The Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest gives the students a chance to reflect upon their penmanship, and its importance to their educational experiences. The contest, open to all students in Grades K-8 in the United States, attracts over 300,000 participants. Students in Grades K-2 submit manuscript (print) entries; students in Grades 3-8 submit cursive handwriting entries. The contest entries, both manuscript and cursive are judged according to the Zaner-Bloser Keys to Legibility: Shape, Size, Spacing and Slant. Winners of the contest are selected from both public and private school categories. State Grade Level Winners compete against each other to become one of the 18 National Grade-Level Semifinalists. The 18 National Grade-Level Semifinalists compete to be chosen as one of nine Grand National Grade Level Champions. In addition to these awards, Zaner-Bloser created the Nicholas Maxim Award to honor special needs students who excel in manuscript or cursive. This category is open to students with a cognitive, intellectual, physical, or developmental disability. Zaner-Bloser awards cash prizes and educational materials to winner students, teachers and schools that participate in the
Zara Hopkins, Mary Davis, Thomas Schlueter, Catherine Staley and Angel Rangel-Garcia (missing Lydia Kashorek)
Annual Contest. Last year, second grader Sophia Dowd of St. Agnes School was the State-Level Grade Level Winner. This year the following students’ handwriting entry forms were submitted to Zaner-Bloser to be considered for the State Grade-Level Competition: Grade 1 - Zara Hopkins Grade 2 - Lydia Kashorek (not pictured) Grade 3 - Mary Davis Grade 4 - Thomas Schlueter Grade 5 - Catherine Staley Grade 6 - Angel Rangel-Garcia St. Agnes School is proud to teach cursive writing to all of our students. “Cursive writing is more than just a ‘lost art form’. Cursive writing allows students an additional means to process language, improve fine motor skills, connect with older generations and engage with historical documents,” stated Principal Elizabeth Jensen. This is the 5th year that St. Agnes School has participated in the Zaner-Bloser Competition.

What a gem of an organization Avon has in the Historical Society. Hardworking, dedicated folks who care so much about our past and who so nicely present it beautifully in our downtown museum. Thanks for all you do!
Good Neighbors make this small town life wonderful. Thank you to Joe who plows our driveway every time it snows. You have no idea how much it is appreciated!! THANK YOU. - B. Family
Thank you Bee Morning Coffee Club for making me smile on my ride to work every day. TJ, Steve and Newman, you guys are the best ever along with Billy Kid and Terry Clifford! Thank you to the 2 wonderful gentlemen who helped me with my car rim and tire. I appreciate their help. I don't know what I would have done without them! - The elderly lady
I recently traveled out of town to go a Holiday Church Bazaar just to find out it closed an hour before its advertised time. I work on Saturdays and simply couldn't come sooner but was happy thinking I'd be able to see it. This sort of thing happens frequently anymore. Volunteers simply don't care about commitments to stay until an event
is scheduled to end. While it's true there are much more important things to be upset about than bazaars and rummage sales closing early, it is also true that I personally am less interested in helping a charity whose volunteers simply can't be bothered taking the time out of their lives to keep an event open its entire scheduled time. In my opinion, commitments matter. I made an effort to come. Please make an effort to be there. To the woman in the house across the street: my husband is sick of seeing you walk around naked. We called the police on you and they said there's nothing they can do, that you have a right to wear anything you want in your own home. And yet, every
Thank you for supporting our 44th Annual German Mardi-Gras. Once again it was a full house and a great success! None of which would have been possible without all the support from the organizations and businesses that donated the raffle baskets and costume winner prizes. We would also like to thank all the volunteers that stepped up to decorate and set everything up the Friday night before and then after a full evening of fun and revelry Saturday, remained to take everything down, pack it all away, and put all the tables and chairs away again! This has been an annual event put on by The Federation of GermanAmerican Societies of

night at supper time, there you are. Personally, I don't care what you do, but my husband has to look at you every single night and he's fed up with it. Get a life!
On Tuesday, 11-21-17, at 12:15pm. To the older female at the east end of our city in a store parking lot. We saw you lurking around a truck where you left a hateful note to a woman you obviously know nothing about who is disabled. Shame on you at your age judging and bullying anyone. She has served our medical teams for many years, (possibly even you!) until she was injured and has many other ailments. How can anyone be so mean and hateful at this time of year or any time when so many people need kindness and encouraging words just to get through a day? Try it, you might feel good about yourself! One day you will be judged yourself. Hope it turns out for ya!
Reply to vent about local physicians - Maybe you should consider the advice for insulin, 2 out of 3 MDs are saying you need it. Who are you to second guess their advice? Did you go to school for endocrine disease? Do you know that diabetes left untreated can lead to blindness, kidney failure, vascular disease, loss of limbs among numerous other issues? Dr. shopping to achieve the advice you are looking for is not too smart and you will find a fool for a patient! Best to heed the advice of the professionals before you don't have a leg to stand on, literally!
