CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Maintain your vehicle. Poorly maintained vehicles endure undue stress that can be prevented by adhering to routine maintenance schedules. Peruse your vehicle’s owner’s manuals to determine the recommended intervals to change the oil and replace the air filter and spark plugs. These simple maintenance tasks are easy and inexpensive, but they make it easier for engines to run smoothly and make efficient use of fuel.

How seniors can simplify everyday tasks The ability to perform everyday tasks is something many people take for granted. But as men and women approach or exceed retirement age, many may start to struggle with chores and tasks they have performed for decades. Physical limitations are a common side effect of aging. But such limitations do not have to prove too big a hurdle for seniors to clear. In fact, there are many ways for seniors to simplify everyday tasks while maintaining their independence. · Embrace technology. Even the proudest Luddites cannot deny technology’s potential to make seniors’ lives easier. Seemingly simple tasks like shopping for groceries and vacuuming a home can be difficult for seniors with dwindling or limited mobility. But seniors with Internet access in their homes can order their groceries online and then pick them up in-store or have them delivered, saving them the trouble of walking around the store. With regard to vacuuming, autonomous vacuum cleaners have removed the need to use traditional vacuum cleaners. Certain autonomous vacuums employ sensors to detect dirty spots on the floor, and these vacuums can even be programmed to clean the home while residents are out of the house. · Upgrade bathrooms. Tasks associated with personal hygiene also tend to be taken for granted until they become difficult. But a few simple bathroom alterations can help seniors safely navigate the bathrooms in their homes so they can maintain their personal hygiene without fear of injury. Grab bars can be installed on shower walls so seniors can safely get in and out of their showers and bathtubs. Such bars are both effective and inexpensive, and some do not even require any drilling to install. Specialty grab bars, tub grips and tub transfer benches are just a few additional products that can make bathing easier for seniors who have lost or are starting to lose some of their physical strength.

· Get “smart” on the road. Seniors who are experiencing mild difficulty driving can make getting about town that much easier by plugging their smartphones into their vehicles or making use of the various apps that have become standard in modern vehicles. For example, the maps app on a smartphone can be connected to a car and direct seniors to their destinations, saving them the trouble of remembering all the ins and outs of how to get a particular destination. Seniors also can employ apps to help them find their vehicles should they forget exactly where they parked in crowded parking lots. Such apps can increase seniors’ comfort levels on the road while helping them maintain their independence. · Downsize. Whether downsizing to a smaller home or simply downsizing a lifestyle, seniors may find that living smaller is akin to living simpler. Empty nesters may find they no longer need several bedrooms in their homes, and moving into smaller homes can reduce their daily workloads while also clearing out clutter that can make performing everyday chores more difficult. Men and women accustomed to hustle and bustle may also find that cutting back on professional and/or personal commitments gives them more energy for everyday activities while enriching the commitments they continue to maintain. Aging men and women can employ various strategies to simplify their lives and maintain their independence well into their golden years.

Livingston Arts Announces First Annual Genesee Valley Fare and Ware Festival By John Rutigliano Livingston Arts announces the first annual Genesee Valley Fare and Ware Festival to be held Saturday, June 17th and Sunday, June 18th, 2017 at the Highbanks Recreational Area in Letchworth Park. Livingston Arts is accepting vendor applications through March 1, 2017. Anyone actively creating food, drink and art locally is encouraged to attend a free planning and information meeting on Friday, February 17, 2017 from 5:30PM to 7:00PM at Livingston Arts, 4 Murray Hill Drive, Mount Morris, NY. Attendees will also have the chance to enjoy the Members’ Exhibit which opens on February 16, 2017 at 5pm. The festival will feature the food, drink and art of our local region. “Art and agriculture have always been a part of the Genesee Valley. We look forward to featuring the work of our farmers and artisans and enjoying the high-quality and unique items grown and made locally,” says Betsy Harris, Executive Director of Livingston Arts. Letchworth State Park and the Livingston County Chamber of Commerce are event partners. All wine and food at the festival will be produced in New York State. The festival will offer tastings and sales of beer, ciders, spirits, wines and foods. Artists will have original works of art related to the food and beverage theme of the festival. Vendor applications are available on line at http:// livingstonarts.org/genesee-valley-fare-and-warefestival/ and are due March 1, 2017. Selected exhibitors will be notified April 1, 2017 and must make payment by May 1, 2017. Livingston Arts is launching a poster design contest for the Genesee Valley Fare and Ware Festival. The theme of the Genesee Valley Fare and Ware Festival is the celebration of the variety of food, drink and art in the Genesee Valley. The design will be the centerpiece of all print and electronic materials for the festival. The contest is open to people of all ages and welcomes all
traditional and digital media. The entry form is located at www.livingstonarts.org. Entries must be emailed or postmarked by February 24, 2017. The festival is free and open to the public. Letchworth Park charges a $10 park admission per vehicle. Proper identification will be required of individuals who wish to consume alcoholic beverages.

DR. ROACH WRITES: I wrote a column on cracked fingertips, and received a wealth of suggestions from readers. For prevention, some suggestions I liked included avoiding too-hot water for handwashing, antibacterial soaps and wool gloves, all of which can remove protective oils from your fingers. A humidifier in the house can prevent drying of all the skin. Home-treatment remedies included flax-seed oil or B vitamins by mouth. (I don’t know if these are effective, but they should be safe.) Most people recommended emollients to the hands, specifically Preparation H, O’Keefe’s Working Hands, Bag Balm, CeraVe, Chapstick and Carmex Healing Cream. Plain petrolatum (Vaseline) works very well for many people and is inexpensive. The area can be covered at night by a bandage or glove. Several people recommended saltwater soaks. One noted that the pure mountain water of Colorado Springs cured him in three days. Finally, one person recommended trimming the nails quite short. These home remedies have helped many. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: After an extreme case of vertigo, including vomiting and being taken to the emergency room, my unsteadiness remains. Over a week later, I need to use a walker to be safe. I am 79, and this happened once four years ago, but without the aftereffects. Any suggestions? -- M.W. ANSWER: The major causes of vertigo, acute labyrinthitis and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, often continue to produce attacks that tend to lessen in severity up to a month after the initial severe attack. A walker may be a useful precaution while recovering. If the problem persists, I strongly recommend a visit with a physical and/or occupational therapist for vestibular rehabilitation, which is physical therapy to restore balance. It also might be necessary to revisit your doctor to confirm the original diagnosis. The booklet on vertigo explains this disruptive condition in detail and outlines its treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 801W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My 15-year-old son was just admitted to the hospital for depression and ADD. His thyroid tests came back abnormal. There is thyroid disease in the family. Is that the cause of his illness? -- Anon. ANSWER: Thyroid conditions, including both hyper- (too much) and hypo- (too little) thyroid hormone are common in the general population, but more so in people who are diagnosed with a wide variety of psychiatric illnesses, including depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. I have read that up to a third of people in new admissions for psychiatric conditions have thyroid abnormalities. It isn’t always clear whether the thyroid problem caused the psychiatric illness, and probably most often there is a large combination of factors, including genetics, environmental and medical conditions that affect the development of psychiatric conditions. It is clear that sometimes, but not always, treating the underlying thyroid condition can make managing the psychiatric symptoms much easier. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. © 2017 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Ken Johnson of Florida International University and Eli Beracha of East Carolina University recently crunched the numbers in 23 cities. Nationwide, they found prices have dropped enough, and rents have risen enough, to make buying the better deal. But results vary. In Dallas, for example, you’re likely still better off renting, despite reasonable home values of less than $140,000. For one thing, rents are cheap too; nice, one-bedrooms go for as little as $500 a month. Prices are only about 18 times the annual rent of comparable homes. The big factor, however, is home price appreciation, which has been very slow historically here. There’s a lot of land available for development and few regulatory barriers to discourage builders. That has kept home values from rising quickly. So even today’s buyers can’t expect their home equity to rise very much.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Feb. 14, 278 A.D., Valentine, a priest in Rome, is executed for defying Emperor Claudius II and performing marriages in secret. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to join his army because of their attachment to their families, and banned all marriages. Today, we celebrate Feb. 14 as Valentine’s Day.

On the Saturday before Thanksgiving I accidentally fell while working at an exit of the Thruway, breaking my hip. I want to thank everyone who stopped to help me, especially the first woman who let me lean against her until the ambulance came. She was my angel. Thank you to my coworkers who brought blankets to cover me up. A thank you to my supervisor who came quickly from another exit and stayed with me at the hospital. I’m still at home recovering. There are just so few words to say how truly grateful I am. I’m just so overwhelmed by you all. God bless each of you. My five-year-old brother spent some time in the hospital over the holiday season. At the hospital, there were kind, caring nurses who worked hard to

help him all day, every day. Among other things, I saw a nurse hold his hand and get him some Italian ice so that he would take his medicine. Also, I know a nurse in our area who was excited to work on New Year’s Eve so that she could see the first baby of 2017. I am so thankful for the nurses in our area who sacrifice and work so hard to help others. The Memorial Day Detachment # 468 of the Marine Corps League would like to thank everyone who participated in our Toys For Tots campaign. We collected, and with the help of our participating agencies, distributed over 5,000 toys to children in Ontario and Livingston Counties. All toys collected in Ontario or Livingston County were distributed within that county. We appreciate everyone who participated as a drop off point, made donations, helped distribute the toys or just spread the word. A lot of children had a Merry Christmas because of you and we are truly grateful. Thank you.
People need to learn how to drive. I am a 20-year-old woman and I have never been in an accident of any kind. I drive the same route every day to school and work, almost always stuck behind a vehicle with a driver who does not know how to use the round-about or how to correctly use turning signals, etc. Not all the time is the driver old, but last week I was behind an older woman who stopped in the middle of the round-a-bout. I stopped at the yield, honked, and motioned for her to “GO” so she did not cause an accident! In the next round-about down the road, she proceeded to do the same thing! It disgusts me that America has become a hazard on the roads due to incapable drivers. As a retail store employee please remember a few things the next time you are in line. We’re supposed to make sure you leave the store happy & for the most part “say yes.”

So... Yes, it’s rude when you’re on your cell as we help you. Yes, you are taking your miserable life out on the wrong person; it’s not my fault that you’re miserable. Yes we know you switched the tags/stickers for an even lower price. Yes, we think you’re nuts asking for a discount on an item because that’s the price you think it should be; It’s a business not a garage sale. Yes, I am embarrassed for you when you’re yelling at a cashier, calm down because you’re making a fool of yourself. Smile. Merry Christmas
The polite garbage can etiquette is to put your trash cans out the evening before or morning of pickup day and bring them in once they’ve been emptied. When you put yours out ONE WEEK prior to pick-up day and then leave the empty, scattered cans on your front lawn for days afterward it becomes an eyesore to the neighborhood. Think about this ~ if the entire neighborhood followed that practice what kind of a slum would this street look like? Please show some consideration to those of us who care.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Feb. 13, 1633, Italian philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Galileo Galilei arrives in Rome to face charges of heresy for advocating that the Earth revolves around the Sun. Galileo remained under house arrest until his death in 1642. DID YOU KNOW? Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

PART-TIME EVENINGS
Farmington & Canandaigua Area.
Avoid high-fat foods at lunchtime. Foods that are high in fat should always be avoided thanks to their connection to a host of health problems. Such foods also negatively affect energy levels when consumed in the middle of the day. The University of Rochester Medical Center notes that the body digests and absorbs high-fat foods very slowly. That means workers who eat highfat foods for lunch won’t get the afternoon energy boost that lowfat, healthy lunches will provide.
