I need a home Bela is a very loyal dog, more of a laid back dog who just

loves to snuggle and be around you. She wouldn’t be considered high energy, which is great. She is crate trained. Her biggest fault is that she is hard to photograph so you don’t get to see the pretty brindle markings in her coat. She really is a lovely girl who just needs a chance to live with a committed family. She has had a blood panel and heartworm/lyme testing done and all came back with no abnormalities or concerns. She is spayed, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $100

Thank you, Genesee Valley Penny Saver… Some are skeptical about print products because “No one reads the paper or weekly shoppers anymore.” Not true! Thousands do each week, and they are customers and new consumers that all businesses need. My father is 84. No cell phone, no computer. He pays cash for everything and is still a very strong consumer. He uses the phone book, local newspapers and the Genesee Valley Penny Saver religiously. We live in a time when local print papers are fewer and fewer. We all like a sense of community and local news so weekly shoppers like the Penny Saver have tremendous value. Thanks for your good service and for assisting me and partnering with me to solicit tenants in my real estate business. Best regards,

Bob Houle

How to address frequent feelings of coldness As people age, many report feeling chilly even when the temperature outside is warm. Studies have shown that older people are more likely to have slightly colder body temperatures than their younger counterparts. Feeling cold can be the result of the natural aging process, or it may be symptomatic of a medical condition. Understanding the reasons behind chilliness can help people take proper action. Aging adults can feel cold for various reasons. As people age, their metabolisms slow down, leading to decreased energy. During times of low energy output, one can feel cold. The American Geriatric Society Foundation for Health suggests that individuals with slower metabolisms may not produce enough heat from their own bodies to stay warm. Circulation issues also may be a concern. As people age, the walls of their blood vessels may lose their elasticity, negatively affecting circulation as a result. Vasoreceptors also may no longer be as quick to direct blood vessels in order to constrict to keep body temperature up. Inadequate fat storage may also be a contributor. Older people generally have less subcutaneous fat stores and muscle mass, both of which can insulate their bodies from cold weather. As a result, they may have trouble regulating body temperature. Exercise and healthy eating may help remedy this situation. Certain medical conditions or medications may be to blame, too. SUNY Upstate Medical University offers that some drugs, like beta blockers, can decrease heart rate, which can reduce circulation to the extremities. High cholesterol levels can impair blood flow. Hypothyroidism, or an underperforming thyroid, also can affect a person’s ability to regulate body temperature. It’s

It’s not uncommon for older adults to feel colder.

imperative that people speak with their doctors to rule out any medical conditions or medication issues that may be contributing to their feelings of being cold. The following are some additional steps aging men and women can take to stay warm. · Make sure you are at a healthy weight for your gender and age. · Get the cardiovascular system pumping by exercising more. · Layer clothing until you feel comfortable so that you are not adjusting the thermostat as frequently. · Wear a vest to keep your chest warm to prevent heat being drawn from the extremities. Often the body will sacrifice heat in the hands and feet to keep its core warm. · Invest in wool socks and blankets, as wool will help wick away moisture from the body. Feeling cold is usually nothing out of the ordinary when a person gets older. Fortunately, there are ways that older men and women can stay warm.

W ith a 50-50, the raffle organizer splits the proceeds evenly w ith the w inner. For example, if $200 in proceeds are collected, the w inner of the raffle receives $100. These types of raffles are popular fundraisers and don’t require any special skills for entry. Few people expect to strike it rich w hen they enter a 50-50 chance. (NewsUSA) - Tip #1 for Renting * Look at the numbers. Renting might not be the best option. If you’re going to lose money each month, it might make more sense to sell, even if you won’t get your asking price. Consider all potential costs, including property taxes, income taxes on your tenants’ rent, maintenance, and the normal wear and tear your property will experience. Remember that you won’t be able to pocket all of the rent money; you will have to put a portion of it back into the property.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Bad Hip Isn’t Always Painful DEAR DR. ROACH: It would be helpful if you described some of the warning signs/symptoms of a bad hip that requires replacement. I now know that such a condition does not necessarily announce itself with chronic severe pain in the hip. Indeed, what sent me to the doctor was a recurrent pain in my groin. My hip was relatively pain-free, and even then I had only a mild discomfort that I thought was simply some arthritis. What I failed to appreciate over the past few years was the very gradual loss of my range of motion, leading to difficulty with simple activities, such as tying my right shoe or cutting my toenails. In retrospect, I feel rather foolish that I did not realize sooner that I was having hip problems. Perhaps you can alert others to the signs of gradual hip degeneration that fall short of acute hip pain. -- B.A. ANSWER: You have done a lot of the work for me. The groin is the most common location for pain from hip osteoarthritis, but other locations -- especially pelvis and knee -- all can be coming from the hip. We suspect arthritis when pain is worse after activity and improves with rest. But it is the range of motion and pain with movement that we as internists look for on exam to help us decide whether the complaints are likely from the hip joint or from another location. Pain is common with internal rotation (such as placing the outside of your ankle on the opposite knee and letting the elevated knee fall to the side). I think the main message is that pain in the hip or groin, especially if worse with exercise, suggests arthritis, and an X-ray can confirm the diagnosis. The arthritis booklet discusses rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 301W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have nitroglycerin with me, as I have heart disease. If I see someone having a heart attack, can I give them one? -- J.G. ANSWER: I applaud your civic-mindedness, but you should not give out nitroglycerine. It is an extremely powerful medication that should be used only when sure of the diagnosis. I recall the chief resident during my training warning a fellow intern that he needed to do a careful exam before giving nitroglycerine, because it can be fatal in people with severe aortic stenosis, a blockage in one of the heart valves. It made quite an impression on me. Trained first-responders carry aspirin, nitroglycerine and oxygen for heart attack victims. The key is to get the person to definitive medical care as soon as possible. I do recommend that everyone who is physically capable of providing CPR learn to do so. You can save the life of a loved one or a total stranger. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. XRX Pioneer Club - a social group for Xerox retirees with a Community Mission By Sandy Leary

MAGIC MAZE END IN THE MIDDLE

HOCUS-FOCUS 1. Pail is missing. 2. Coat is shorter. 3. Sun is missing. 4. Hat is missing. 5. Tent flap is different. 6. Flashlight is missing.

I graduated from Wayne Central School District in June 1964. A week later I began work at Xerox Corporation in building 207 on the Webster, NY campus. My career would grow for 25 years and as a retiree I now look back now on all those years fondly and gratefully. The company had established Research & Engineering at 800 Phillips Road and both the company and the campus were growing by leaps and bounds; it was a truly exciting time to join this Fortune 500 company. I was appointed the back-up receptionist in manufacturing - the busiest reception area for the entire plant. Every visitor was required to sign in, display a badge, then allowed to visit a designated employee(s). On a daily basis, I would encourage all first-time visitors to take a campus map, as many would get lost since the order of the buildings was at best, not logical! I quickly rose to the executive secretarial ranks and worked for some of the original Haloid managers who helped to take the company from Haloid to Xerox Corporation. What an education, with mentoring from some of the brightest and keenest minds in the industry. I also gained a very large circle of new friends, some of whom still remain in my life. In 1989 I decided to leave the only “mothership” I had ever known to move into the sales and marketing arena. I had finally found my calling and I enjoyed another 20+ years loving what I did for a living every day. Retirement allowed me to look back in search of something more and I soon began to research what organizations would give meaning to my new lifestyle. I was introduced to the XRX Pioneer Club (www.xeroxpioneerclub.org), a social group for Xerox retirees. Ironically, I had never heard of the retiree club in all those 25 years of employment, but I quickly found a way to turn my skill set into motion! Appointed as Membership Chair, my mission was simple - retain every single current member as well as attract new members. Along the way, I added Public Relations to my job description and began a partnership with the local media to get the word out about our club. We are a not-for-profit organization, started in the 1960’s when Joe Wilson was our leader.

The club offers a bowling and a golf league, trips and travel, a singles group, a monthly newsletter (The Xpress) and monthly luncheons with speakers. The group also offers corporate discounts, BJ’s discounted memberships/renewals, camaraderie, and an avenue to stay abreast of all things Xerox-related. BUT… the thing the club is most proud of is their annual Community Service Project - giving back to our local communities; in place since the 1980’s! The focus for 2017 is Cameron Community Center (www.cameronministries.org) - an urban outreach center in the Lyell-Otis neighborhood. The center’s wish list includes sugar, coffee, school supplies, children’s socks/undies. 98% of the residents served live in poverty! THANK YOU to Chester Carlson for believing in and persevering amidst rejection and discouragement for his invention of xerography. THANK YOU to Joe Wilson for his leadership and vision. And, THANK YOU to all the men/ women who worked tirelessly at Haloid to make great sacrifices and were courageous enough to help move the seed of an idea to the success of Xerox today!! Please contact Sandy Leary, sandyhhi@rochester.rr.com, 585-872-0975 if you’d like to submit a not-for-profit organization for 2018 consideration or if you’d like to join the club.

BEE SAFE W HILE GARDENING TO PROTECT POLLINATORS Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property.

Thank you to everyone and every company that participated in the Lakeville United Church of Christ (LUCC) 1st Penny Social that was held on 2/11/17. It was a successful fund raising event that equally benefited the following three not-forprofit organizations within our community: Chances and Changes, the Livonia Food Pantry and the Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department. On behalf of the LUCC Stewardship Committee, thank you again for your participation.

“We’ll take care of that for you.” These were the first words I heard as I entered my five weeks of respite care at Clark Meadows. That quality of care, kindness, helpfulness, and encouragement continued for my entire stay. It was a completely positive experience that enabled me to move back into my own

apartment and to be independent once again. I am so thankful that Clark Meadows is an integral part of Ferris Hills. My heartfelt thanks to all the staff there for your help. Sybil Amico

On Sunday, January 29, Riga Recreation, in partnership with the Churchville Lions Club, held its annual “WinterFest,” minus the snow, at the Churchville Elementary School. The community was treated to the Lions “World Famous” Chicken BBQ along with a kids’ carnival, caricature drawings, chair massages, wildlife education, robotics, and airbrush tattoos. Thanks go out to all the organizations and people who made this year’s event a huge success. The turnout by the Riga community is to be complimented as the Lions sold out all their BBQs and there was a constant flow of the crowd throughout the day. All involved look forward to WinterFest, 2018 and hopefully snow for outdoor activities!

To the person who criticized the party who paid their bills by check: there are people who do not have a computer either by choice or need and paying bills by check is still used by many. I personally prefer paying by check rather than putting my personal data on the internet. As long as banks provide check capabilities, I will continue to do so. It costs a lot to own a computer and for internet services so I think we who pay by check may be a bit more frugal and safer than you. SO, you use your computer internet services but do not criticize those of us who prefer not to.

Horseback riding is a popular pastime in this rural area. However, for a few months out of the year the best place to ride unfortunately, is the side of the road. If it’s too muddy, we damage farmers’ fields. Or the ground is frozen and rough making it uncomfortable for

horse’s feet. My concern is that most drivers don’t slow down, and some don’t even move over. We move away from the road when a vehicle is coming, but I think drivers need to be aware that the 1000 pound animal we are on doesn’t understand that they can’t run away from (& into the road) if something scares them. So please, when you see someone riding, SLOW DOWN and MOVE OVER! Help us enjoy our hobby safely. You do not want to hit us and we do not want to be hit by you! Disgusted. I witnessed a pet hit by a car on a chosen spot city street. 911 advised an officer and the humane society agent would be dispatched. 40 minutes later I inquired where the officer/agent were and was told that they don’t get involved in deceased pets. 40 minutes... of course it died. No more donations from this guy..... I walk everywhere. I got stopped in a crosswalk two days ago, they told me to hurry up and move, that it is cold. You have a car. I’m walking. I told you to go ahead and move, but no, you yelled at me to move!
