Arthritis linked to another condition People who see dermatologists for the skin condition psoriasis should not take the presence of joint aches and pains lightly, as the two things might be connected. The National Psoriasis Foundation notes that psoriasis is a precursor to psoriatic arthritis in 30 percent of patients. What is psoriatic arthritis? Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that affects the rate of skin cell reproduction. People with psoriasis may experience redness, itchiness and raised bumps (plaques) of skin on various areas of their bodies. Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic form of arthritis that typically occurs in people with skin psoriasis, but also can be present in those without the skin condition, but particularly among those who have relatives with psoriasis. The American College of Rheumatology says that psoriatic arthritis typically affects the large joints, especially the lower extremities, distal joints of the fingers and toes and the back and sacroiliac joints of the pelvis. Early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of psoriatic arthritis are crucial to relieving inflammation and preventing permanent joint damage. Symptoms Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis can develop gradually or quickly, and some symptoms can be severe. NPF indicates that common symptoms of psoriatic arthritis include · morning stiffness and tiredness; · tenderness, pain and swelling over tendons; · swollen fingers and toes;
MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On May 1, 1926, Ford Motor Company becomes one of the first companies in America to adopt a five-day, 40-hour week for its automotive factory workers. Other manufacturers soon followed Ford’s lead, and the Monday-to-Friday workweek became standard. You can only perceive real beauty in a person as they get older. ~ Anouk Aimee

· reduced range of motion; · nail changes, including pitting, and · redness and pain in the eyes. Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis are similar to rheumatoid arthritis, gout and reactive arthritis. Doctors will rule out other symptoms that may be indicative of those conditions. The American College of Rheumatology also indicates that psoriatic arthritis is typically blood test negative. The diagnosis is typically made by a rheumatologist after reviewing a clinical history and performing a physical exam. Treatment Doctors will need to assess symptoms before deciding on a course of treatment. Mild cases may respond to over-thecounter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen. However, antirheumatic drugs and newer biologic drugs may be prescribed to treat more aggressive cases of psoriatic arthritis. Corticosteroid injections can be useful for swollen joints, and surgery may be necessary to repair badly damaged joints. Individuals who suspect their arthritis may be linked to psoriasis can first speak with a dermatologist or primary care physician. The NPF also offers a screening tool at www.psoriasis.org/psa-screening.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife suffered from spinal stenosis. She had a cortisone shot, which helped for 90 days. She had regular physical therapy meetings. She was in constant pain, but insisted on playing tennis (against her doctor’s wishes). Then, we happened to vacation for a month in Florida, and one of the offered activities was a “stretch” workout. She insisted that she wanted to try it. After the very first time she thought she felt a little better. She went to several more sessions, and finally asked the trainer what she could buy to keep it up at home. The trainer suggested a stretching DVD. It takes about an hour to complete it, and she now does it three times a week. She plays hard tennis five days a week, hasn’t complained about pain since 2010, and hasn’t needed any physical therapy, either. I continue to be amazed. Certainly this kind of therapy can’t hurt anyone, since you do it only to your personal comfort levels. Perhaps you might mention this type of therapy in your column sometime. It worked miracles for us at virtually no cost. -- R.M. ANSWER: Spinal stenosis is caused by pressure on the nerves at the level of the spinal column. Physical therapy is one effective treatment, and one I always recommend prior to considering surgery. I thank you for taking the time to point out that gentle stretching can help, probably by opening up the spaces in between the vertebrae to allow the nerve more room. The booklet on back problems gives an outline of some causes of and treatments for the more-common back maladies. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 303W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: We recently lost a dear relative to cholangiocarcinoma. He had served in the Navy in Vietnam. The probable cause of his cancer was from a parasite, a river fluke, which is common to that region. The diagnosis came way too late to save his life. How can veterans be tested or diagnosed early enough for a possible successful cure? Are there any current tests available? -- J.A.E. ANSWER: I am sorry to hear about your relative. Cholangiocarcinoma is cancer of the bile duct, a rare cancer. Liver flukes are a risk factor, and so is a condition called primary sclerosing cholangitis, a condition associated with ulcerative colitis. The cancer is rare but highly lethal, because by the time symptoms show up, the cancer usually is advanced. Also because of its rarity, screening for the cancer in a general population won’t be effective. However, for people at high risk, such as those with PSC or a history of liver parasites, at least one study has shown that screening with a blood test (CA 19-9, CEA) or by endoscopy can be effective. It would be reasonable to speak with the expert taking care of this problem, usually a gastroenterologist, about screening. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Gardeners can expand their gardens to include fruit-bearing trees and rows of vegetables. Produce can be harvested from early spring through late fall depending on the crops planted.
HOME SERVICES
Gardening pointers for novices People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

Fitness experts advise that homeow ners building a home gym in their homes emphasize lighting in the room that w ill soon transform into a gym. A w ell-lit room, w hether the light is coming from several w indow s, a door or recessed lighting in the ceiling, can help men and w omen maintain their energy levels throughout their w orkouts, w hereas darker rooms can lead to feelings of sluggishness, w hich can compromise w orkout routines. In addition, w hen building a home gym, keep the room free of clutter and unnecessary items that w ill only be a distractions during w orkouts. Potentially valuable additions to home gyms include plants, w hich can increase oxygen levels in the room, and at least one mirror, w hich can help men and w omen focus on their movements and ensure they are performing exercises correctly. Homeow ners building a home gym also should consider finding room for aw all-mounted television to make time spent on elliptical machines or treadmills less monotonous. If possible, homeow ners should connect a streaming device to the television so they can catch up on their favorite show s or w atch movies as they burn calories. It’s also good to find space for a mini refrigerator in the gym, w hich should be kept w ell stocked w ith w ater. This can prevent runs to the kitchen in the middle of a w orkout.

Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive.

Radon is an odorless, invisible gas that may be lurking in homes even if homeowners are unaware of its presence. Although it is a naturally occurring substance, radon has the potential to cause serious illness. Therefore, its detection and reduction are paramount. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Surgeon General’s Office have estimated that as many as 20,000 lung cancer deaths are caused each year by radon, which is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. The EPA further notes that many homes are in radon danger areas. Nearly one in three homes checked in seven states and on three lands designated for Native Americans had screening levels over 4 pCi/L, the EPA’s recommended action level for radon exposure. According to Air Chek, Inc., a radon testing resource, a radon level of 4 pCi/l is equal to approximately 35 times as much radiation as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission would allow if a person was standing next to the fence of a radioactive waste site.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

On Saturday, April 8th the Town of Riga held its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Sanford Road Park. The late snowstorm prevented us from going outside so we adjusted and held the event in the Maher Lodge. The hunters also were treated to arts & crafts, face painting, airbrush tattoos, and a jelly bean guessing contest. Thanks go out to the organizations and individuals that made this event possible. David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga Thank you for the wonderful call I received on April Fool’s Day regarding the March 31st Give & Take column about a treadmill that you had available. We came to pick it up and you even helped load it. It was raining and we had nothing to cover it up with and you gave us a tarp. I want to thank you for help loading it and it works great! Thanks again and

put up as shelter, junk all over the yard, bushes overgrown and it is causing rodents. The house has no power, never a light on and no one is living inside. I don’t understand why nothing is done about this. It is not fair to the neighbors who live around this house and pay taxes. Clean up your yard or vacate the premises.
April Fool’s Surprise! We thank whoever paid for our coffee and donuts including tip at the Town & Country restaurant in Batavia on April 1st. We shall pay it forward. Ann & Louie Amazing Concert! I want to congratulate all the excellent musicians at the GWMEA All-County Festival held on Saturday, April 1st. The music was performed in such an outstanding manner, everyone involved should be very proud. To the teachers who worked so diligently to get the kids ready, you did a terrific job! To the conductors for the performance, your heart and soul was felt throughout the entire group. The choice of music was really good and to see the kids so in tune and excited to perform, was fantastic! Please continue to sacrifice your time and talent to put on these celebrations of the arts in our public and catholic schools. Thank you again for all your hard work, especially St. Joseph’s and Alexander who were represented extremely well. We really enjoyed it and look forward to next year!
A local farm has recently had a second wind turbine built. Since then, our area has had 3 “brownouts.” Does anyone know if this can be the cause of our recent outages? Of course the power company denies that this can be the cause. Online research says it is possible. When our power company was questioned about damage to home appliances such as: refrigerators, freezers, water systems, etc. caused by low voltage, their answer was “Don’t you have home insurance to cover this?” Which will cost us after they increase our policies. Perhaps recourse to replace burned out appliances would be to go after those who had them installed and also hold the power company that installed them responsible for costs. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have seen a backyard that is a disaster. They are possibly even living back there. Tarps
On Saturday, February 4th at the local dollar store, I dropped my green change purse with the letter N on one side. I went back to the store after I realized it was missing and was told by the manager that she gave it to a woman who said it belonged to her. It did NOT belong to you...that was MY purse and money that you STOLE. It was my grocery money for the week! Shame on you!!! To the person who left his/her Styrofoam coffee cup sitting on a log along a trail at Mendon Ponds Park: What did you think was going to happen to it? If you are not going to respect the park or the environment, perhaps you should drink your coffee at home, in your car, or at your local coffee shop.

Because Life is Better With Friends! By Linda Chadderdon
Recently my coworker and I had the privilege to sit down with 2 couples who participate in the Home Visitation Program in Genesee County. Both couples are older adults. Don and Audrey are in their early eighties and are members of our program to receive visits. Ken and Judy are retired and volunteer for the program and have been visiting Don and Audrey for two to three years now. When we arrived, the energy in the room was amazing! Through the program these four people have become fast friends. When we asked what makes this program work, their answers were quick. For Don and Audrey, Ken and Judy have provided friendship, acceptance and an additional sense of family. At their weekly visits they routinely share a snack, have insider jokes and have come to know each other well. Because they don’t have anyone close by to help, Ken and Judy check up on things they may need, have helped with yard work and also with connections to other services they have needed. Ken and Judy visit about once a week and both couples look forward to their visits. Don and Audrey know that they will always be there for them if they have a problem. Ken and Judy volunteer and share of their time and talents in several ways and we are fortunate that the Home Visitation Program is one of those places. Ken talked about the adjustment to retirement and that he enjoys still being active and contributing to helping older adults as he did in his career. He considers helping older people to be his calling in life. Both are active people involved in life in many ways and they enjoy the sense of purpose in life and the rewards that come from helping others as part of this program. There are so many people in our community who are living alone and don’t have family members in the area. Most children of seniors are working and raising

their families and aren’t as available as they’d like to be for their parents. Being socially isolated has many potentially negative effects on an individual’s physical and mental health. The Home Visitation Program helps to provide the socialization that we all need. To qualify for visits a person needs to be a resident of Genesee County, socially isolated and sixty years of age or older. Our program is non-denominational and is staffed by volunteers so there is no cost to participate. Our volunteers must be over age eighteen, and all are interviewed and trained. We check references and do a background check on everyone before they make home visits. I think the strongest statement for our program came from Don as we were preparing to leave. He said that because of their friendship with Ken and Judy, even though he has health problems that make it impossible to get out and do things he used to do, he is happier now than he has ever been in his life. He has things to look forward to that he enjoys every week. The Home Visitation Program is one of the Muriel H. Marshall programs in Genesee County. The Program is administered by Catholic Charities. If you or a loved one could benefit from home visits or are interested in being able to volunteer for such a great program, call Sandy or Linda at Catholic Charities at 585-343-0614.

We’re highlighting our rescue’s longest resident, Bugsy. Bugsy has been waiting for a family for six years. Six. Years. We’ll be darned if we can figure out why. Although he has to be an only pet, Bugsy absolutely adores people of all ages, loves to play, and really loves to cuddle. He loves unabashedly, the way only dogs can. He just wants you to love him back. Last year, we saw story after story of long-term dogs getting adopted. We saw photo after photo of pit bulls with cardboard signs that said “I’ve been waiting 578 days for a family.” If Bugsy’s future adopter is reading this post, consider this your sign: Bugsy has been waiting 2,190 days for a home.
Meet Jelly Bean! This little lady is a black domestic shorthair cat. She is estimated around 2-3 years old. She can be timid when first meeting people, but is extremely friendly and will purr away while receiving pets. She is completely vetted and ready to find her forever home.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.
