PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present.
Penny Saver Pet of the Week My name is
Sneetchy. I was hit by a car and paralyzed in the rear before my mom and dad adopted me. I now use a wheelchair to get around and am the happiest girl around. I love everyone I meet and I am currently in training to be a therapy dog who visits hospitals. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. TIME IS MONEY WHEN IT COMES TO CAR MAINTENANCE (NAPSI)—Whether changing the oil, replacing the wiper blades or checking the tires, finding the time to perform simple preventative vehicle maintenance is money in the bank. According to research conducted by automotive market research firm IMR Inc., one out of three consumers who put off routine vehicle maintenance do so because they cannot find a convenient time. In addition, millennials and those who own older vehicles are more likely to delay routine maintenance. Expert Advice “There is an old adage that if you take care of your car, your car will take care of you,” said Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Making time to perform routine auto care not only ensures a safer, more dependable vehicle, but car owners can preserve the trade-in value and save money by addressing small issues before they become more complicated, expensive repairs.” What You Should Do The most common maintenance procedures to keep a car operating safely and reliably while maintaining its long-term value involve checking the oil, filters and fluids, the belts and hoses, brakes, tires and air-conditioning. An annual tune-up and wheel alignment are also good ideas. Where To Get Help To make it easier for car owners to remember to include auto care in their busy schedules, the Car Care Council offers a free custom service schedule and e-mail reminder service. This simple-to-use online resource can be personalized to help make auto care more convenient and economical.

It em s t o include in your aut om ot ive em ergency k it Tools: It’s important to include tools in your automotive emergency kit. W hile a full toolbox might be unnecessary, bring along an adjustable w rench, a flat head and Phillips screw driver, a pair of pliers, a tire jack and crow bar, an ice scraper, and a flashlight. Extra roadside flares and reflectors also should be packed should you need to pull over and address an automotive problem, such as a flat tire. Keep a tire pressure gauge in your glove compartment or w ith your other tools so you can check tire pressure if you feel your car is not operating as smoothly as it normally does.
In addition, the council’s popular “Car Care Guide” for motorists is available at no charge, electronically or by printed copy, in English and Spanish. The guide covers major services, component groups within the vehicle, service interval recommendations and much more. The council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. Learn More: For the latest car care news, visit the council’s online media room at http://media.carcare.org. 10 early signs of Alzheimer’s disease Change plays a big role in the aging process. As adults age, both their minds and bodies undergo changes. The changes associated with aging are not uniform. Some people may experience small changes as they inch toward and ultimately pass retirement age, while others may undergo changes that affect nearly every aspect of their lives. Cognitive decline is the type of age-related change that can have a dramatic impact on a person’s life, affecting his or her ability to live independently. A general term used to describe symptoms associated with a decline in memory or thinking skills such as judgment and reasoning, dementia is often mistaken as a normal part of aging. However, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America notes that dementia-related illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease, are not a normal part of aging. Because many people associate memory loss with aging, they may be compelled to accept some of the early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s as mere byproducts of growing older. However, the Alzheimer’s Association urges men 5. Magic Maze THE BACKYARD
--DEAR DR. ROACH: I understand that the overuse of antibiotics can harm the good bacteria in the intestinal tract, as well as the bad. While I don’t feel that I am abusing antibiotics, I have been prescribed two courses in the past five years. I wonder what action can be taken to try to ensure that balance in my gut is restored. -- M.L. ANSWER: We are just beginning to understand the beneficial effect of bacteria living in our intestine, and there is preliminary evidence that antibiotics might have adverse long-term effects due to loss of healthy bacteria. I think the most important message from this is to use antibiotics as little as possible, but two courses in five years is certainly modest. The use of probiotics (healthy bacteria) might help prevent growth of harmful bacteria, improve the immune system, reduce pain and improve the function of the gut lining. I don’t think probiotics are necessary after the occasional course of antibiotics. However, it is reasonable to consider probiotics in some situations, including in people with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), in cases of infectious diarrhea and perhaps in people with irritable bowel syndrome. Commercial probiotics are expensive, not FDA-approved and aren’t proven to treat or cure any disease as of yet. Yogurt often is recommended, but not all yogurt contains live healthy bacteria. Even in the ones that do, many of the bacteria are killed by our stomach acid. Other fermented dairy products, such as kefir, have higher concentrations of bacteria. Both of these might be problematic in people with lactose intolerance (which can happen to anyone temporarily after a bout of infectious diarrhea) *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My domestic partner’s body heat is always very warm. We keep our home at 75 degrees F, and she complains that the house is too hot. Even at night when I touch her, I can feel the heat on her body. What do you think might be causing this to happen? Is this normal? She is in her mid-60s. -- C.B. ANSWER: It is not at all abnormal for people to have different temperatures at which they feel comfortable, and 75 degrees F is on the warm side of comfort for many. One way that our bodies regulate temperature is through blood flow to the extremities. When the blood vessels are open, the person will feel quite warm to the touch, and when trying to conserve heat, the skin feels cold and clammy. If she is really bothered by it, it might be worth thinking about two common medical issues: hyperthyroidism and vasomotor instability of menopause. In hyperthyroidism, the entire metabolism is enhanced, so the person is warm all the time. A simple blood test can confirm this diagnosis. In a woman in her 60s, it is common to have periods of vasomotor instability, usually called hot flashes. In these, the blood vessels open up and the woman becomes uncomfortably hot for a few minutes. It is possible that one of these could be happening for your partner. However, sometimes variations in normal physiology can fool the physician into thinking there is a problem. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET (NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority. 1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air. 2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated. 3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself.

CROSSWORD
DID YOU KNOW? Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.

The Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District Breaks Ground on Phase II Capital Project Submitted by Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District

The Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District broke ground today on major renovations that will be occurring at all of the District’s facilities. The project is estimated to be completed by the end of 2020. Renovations include the Transportation and Facilities Department being merged on a single site at the existing bus garage. This will allow the renovation of the High School parking lots and the main entrance to provide enhanced security and safety. The Phase II Capital Project also includes extensive masonry restoration to the historic section of the original High School building. The High School will also house new tennis courts, a contemporary cafeteria, modern art classrooms, enhanced technology labs, new HVAC (Heat, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) control systems, moisture mitigation, upgraded light fixtures in select locations, and additional water bottle filling stations. The Manor School (grades 2-5) will receive a significant renovation. The art, nursing, and counseling offices will be renovated and expanded. Enhancements will be made to the main offices, fire alarms, and public address systems. Complete classroom renovations including bathroom, paint, storage, HVAC, and select power upgrades will also be made. The addition of a flexible learning lab, new playground equipment, enhanced safety features, and mechanical and ventilation upgrades will be found throughout the facility. Expanded classrooms will include vocal music, the flexible learning space, and the school cafeteria at Manor. At the District’s Middle School (grades 68) a second multi-purpose turf field will be installed. This location will house both baseball and softball fields as well as a large rectangular field. The District’s Auditorium will be modernized with presentation and sound enhancements. At Lima Primary (K-1) select exterior brick reconstruction will be completed, renovations will be made to the main office, and nurse’s suite and selective carpet replacement in key rooms will be completed. An elevator to the second floor will be added. Mechanical improvements to air quality and stormwater drainage will be completed. “I would like to say thank you to our community and the citizens who voted on the Phase II referendum in May of 2016. This is
Groundbreaking, digging in! such an exciting time for Honeoye Falls-Lima to be renovating our campus as we begin to celebrate fifty years of the merged school districts of Honeoye Falls and Lima,” said Superintendent Gene Mancuso. “Since 1969 HF-L has been a beacon of strength in the community and I am honored to be part of this groundbreaking. This is an exciting time for our students, our district, and our community.” In May of 2016, District voters approved this capital project expenditure of $29,986,084. This investment maximizes the building aid received from New York State and uses more than four million dollars in capital reserves. The remaining local share of this capital project will be funded through an anticipated increase of $63 per average homeowner over the next three years. “On behalf of the board, we would like to thank the community for supporting Phase II of our Long Range District Facilities Plan,” said Amy West, HF-L Board of Education President. “We are excited to break ground on our new instructional, transportation, and athletic facilities.” Phase I of the Long Range Capital Project was completed in 2013. Phase I addressed renovations and infrastructure improvements at all of the buildings, site work to improve safety and traffic flow, the addition of space for the arts at the Middle School, athletic field upgrades and additions, the introduction of solar panels and other energy efficiencies, and the redesign of science and technology classrooms, as well as the purchase of related equipment and furniture. The Phase II Capital Project is focused on protecting the community’s investment in its school buildings and grounds, enhancing the safety and security of these facilities, improving energy efficiency, reducing ongoing maintenance costs and meeting the needs of the instructional and activity program for the years ahead.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep your feelings to yourself as you work through an awkward circumstance. Complaining is useless, and also unwise since your words could come back to haunt you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A sudden flash of Bovine practicality shows you how you might be able to turn your artistic pursuits into a profitable venture. A spouse or partner offers some sage advice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be prepared with several “Plan Bs” that you might have to use as backups just in case you encounter some troublesome complications with your carefully constructed schedule. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might think you’ll never have a free moment again with the demands of the workplace piling on. Cheer up. The pressure eases as holiday time nears. An old friend brings good news. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine pride might make it difficult to offer an apology to a co-worker you unintentionally offended. But a quick and sincere “I’m sorry” could prevent problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to tackle those backed-up chores that have kept you from moving into other, potentially more worthwhile projects. A personal matter needs your attention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually have no problem rushing to the defense of someone you perceive as being treated unjustly. But perceptions could be deceiving this week. Check the facts before you act. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before you point fingers at who might be to blame for the unexpected change in your plans, take a few moments to reflect on how this turn of events might be a blessing in disguise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You seek out advice in the first part of the week. But be careful not to let counsel from others overshadow your own sense of perception. Things become clearer by the week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The trusted colleagues you relied on earlier continue to offer support with your project. But you take more control, and by the week’s end, you should be in full command. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Rely on your practical side while exploring investment possibilities. Caution is still your watchword in these matters. Your social life takes a gratifying turn by the week’s end. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An already confusing situation appears to grow murkier during the first part of the week. But it all starts to clear by the week’s end. Plan to spend the weekend with someone special. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a passion for life that inspires others to follow your example. You could be a motivational speaker. WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs. Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot. Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.

(NAPSI)—If you own or run a business, you’re not alone. There are some 30 million businesses in the U.S., ranging from small storefronts to large enterprise entities, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. While businesses of all sizes play a critical role in the economy, each workplace faces its own unique challenges, especially as it relates to growth and scalability. With company and workforce growth comes changing telecommunication needs. You might need to hire staff in new areas or cater to mobile millennials. Employees often expect their employers to provide them with flexible communication tools. Most business professionals want multiple connectivity options from their business phone solution, according to recent research from leading tech firm IDG. If you’re like most managers, you desire top-of-the-line technology that can help drive operational efficiencies and cater to your growth projections. Growing a business can be expensive but you shouldn’t have to miss out on communications solutions that can empower your workforce and spur continued growth. When you’re looking at your telecommunication needs, keep these important factors in mind. First, consider durable, affordable Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) deskset phones, which can manage Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls. Moving your telecommunications to the cloud can expand your phone system while maintaining central control. Cloud-based VoIP scales up or down, making it easy to add new locations or increase head count. SIP can also improve your business if you’re upgrading from an Ethernet jack or a traditional circuit transmission. This technology provides clear audio and reduces the need for costly installation and maintenance contracts. Some SIP desksets offer excellent user experience. Think color LCD screens for easy navigation, second screen displays with programmable keys, HD sound quality for natural conversations, and Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free headset calls. Secondly, take an introspective look at what’s truly needed from a communications perspective of your business. Evaluate what your operational landscape looks like. You may require full-featured desksets and handsets, which can hold, transfer, conference and intercom. Or you may need cordless solutions to dramatically improve mobility around a busy workplace. Cordless handsets and wireless headsets let people take calls as they move around a restaurant, warehouse or large office, for example. Also consider whether you’ll need the ability to expand your communications system as your business grows. You may find multiple cordless handsets or desksets, with their own phone numbers or extensions, essential to future-proofing your company for more employees and customers. Remember, the right communications tools can have a major effect on the productivity, experience and growth of your company. Select a phone solution that meets your unique needs, as well as one with flexibility, mobility features, dependable call quality, advanced call handling, reliable U.S.-based technical support, and warranty coverage. Good examples of these solutions include the new ErisTerminal SIP desksets and cordless mobility solutions from VTech Business Solutions. I recently found ripped up pieces of paper on one of my town's back roads. I was surprised to find they were seemingly diary pages! And they were dated just a couple of weeks ago. Let's just say they made me cry. It was a poetic love letter expressing one’s feelings for someone else. It was beautifully composed, with so much heartache in it. I am hoping the writer will see this. If you do, please contact me at wheniamold260@gmail.com. I want to know your story. Thank you for letting me realize there are many triumphs, heartaches and breaks. But

there is also hope. Hope and redemption. I recently submitted a request to Give & Take for a small fridge for our church’s Youth Ministry room. Within a week I had received two offers! I am blessed by the generosity of these two individuals but also by the Penny Saver’s commitment to publishing this wonderful and helpful feature! Hats off to Livingston County Pizza on Rochester Street in Avon. Your pizza is wonderful. Your service is excellent. Keep up the good work! Diane
You allowed your toddler to scream for 40 minutes in the area's largest grocery store this morning. You should be ashamed of yourself for telling
To the individual complaining about farmers spreading manure, New York State has right-to-farm laws. If you do not like the smells associated with agriculture, you should move to the city. Also, the world does not revolve around you and your schedule; farmers are not going to wait until it is 90 degrees to do a task that needs to get done. You come here from [another country] because you can receive a free wheelchair for

people "that's just what toddlers do". No, it's what terrible parents of toddlers do. People were removing their hearing aids because of you. People were leaving the store because of you. If you're not going to teach your child to behave properly, leave him at home. Why do so many people feel it is OK to pull into oncoming traffic just because something is blocking their lane? I'm sorry that the delivery truck or lawn service is parked on your side, but that means you need to STOP and wait for me to pass before you proceed to drive around.

Thank you so much for my relatives, friends and neighbors! You have all helped me out so much! Thank you to Patrick Kelly, Rory Hoskins, Brenda and Chuck Ferugie, Mary McDonald, Frankie Lapoma, Ronald Wall, Dominic, Jeff Hayes, Fred Webb and Mike Cuozzo and Bill Coffey. God Bless You! Patty Kelly
A few days ago I was in Walmart in Batavia, not having any success finding what I needed. Went to Customer
Service; the lady said this young man may be able to help you. (wish I could remember his name). He had a hand-held gadget and said, "Follow me." Eureka! Found all the items I was looking for! What a contrast to the woman who was checking me out in a store that is closing soon no eye contact; she was carrying on a conversation with a coworker.
your child; something that would have cost many thousands of dollars in [your country]. You live in a 3-bedroom subsidized housing apartment with a utility allowance deducted from the rent. Ramps were added to your building for easy wheelchair access. However, out front of your apartment you fly [your country's] flag. Pretty ungrateful aren't you?
mulch for the past two years, never plant a flower; never wash the exterior windows, paid to have a flunky company wash the exterior of the building (but not the windows!) which left stains ALL over the siding....a mess which no one has ever addressed. One picnic table for 32 residents, no shaded area for senior citizens to sit; no chairs, No nothing! Wake up.
With 60 new apartments going up next door that offer free air conditioning, free laundry facilities, free flat screen TV, free basic cable, free microwave ovens, and all utilities free, I would be sprucing up this complex before you lose all of your good tenants. Instead, you raise the price of one load of laundry to $4.00; never mulch these grounds even though the maintenance man has prepared all trees and shrubs for
To the driver in the car who nearly rear-ended me, then proceeded to "shoot" me "finger guns," tailgate me, then gunned it and flipped me off once I turned to [local store], yeah, I was the young girl in the other car. Sad to see grown men act like children. Actually, a child would have more decency. Sorry you were in such a rush. I actually commend you for at least not beeping at me!
While shopping at Aldi's a couple of weeks ago a very generous lady behind me paid for my groceries. Thanks again!
