Pittsford Is Not So Silent on Candlelight Night By Amanda Dudek On Tuesday, December 4th, the streets of Pittsford plan to be anything but quiet. Every December, Pittsford celebrates its annual, traditional Candlelight Night. Pittsford’s Village streets are filled with holiday cheer, the sounds of live music, carolers and sleigh bells. Local businesses light their candles to usher in the Holiday season and festival holiday lights and decorations are everywhere to be seen. Pittsford’s Candlelight Night is a wonderful opportunity for shopping local. Local dining establishments welcome visitors for a cozy, sit-down meal, and food trucks around the Village invite the on-the-go shopper to enjoy a more mobile meal. Many area businesses also provide holiday treats for browsing guests! Many of these merchants also offer special sale items in honor of the event. Earlier in the evening, there are activities to enjoy. Holiday craft activities can be found around the Village, and the Library holds its book sale. Guests are invited to visit the Kid Zone at Northfield Commons to participate in activities just for them. Children will also be delighted by our special guests: Mr. & Mrs. Claus and the Grinch. Visitors can have photos taken with Santa’s sleigh and live reindeer. The whole family will enjoy two tree lightings, one at Main Street and State Street at 6pm and another at Label 7, Northfield Common at 7pm. Guests will also be

delighted by free, horse-drawn wagon rides which run between the center of the village and the Canal from 5pm until 8pm. A shuttle bus, courtesy of The Highlands, is available to transport visitors from Sutherland High School and drop them off in the center of the Village. South Main Street will be closed to vehicle traffic during the event. Later in the evening, adults 21 years of age and older are welcome to join the Annual Pub Crawl which begins at 7:30pm. Could Your Pet’s Diet be a Problem? Penny Saver Pet of the Week My name is Zoe and I’m a Miniature Schnauzer.␣ I’m 5 years old and live with my parents & my 4 yr. old brother.␣ I’m very friendly and love people.␣ My favorite thing to do is ride on my Grandpa’s golf cart, I’m pretty lucky.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

To sponsor the Pet of the Week, Call 226-8111 or email sales@gvpennysaver.com

Meeting your pet’s nutritional needs is one of the most important ways you care for your furry friend. It may surprise you, then, to learn that around 70% of pets are eating the wrong pet food every day, and a staggering 60% of pets are overweight. Weight and other health concerns could all be related to your pet’s diet. Many pet owners do their best to buy the right pet food for their four-legged companions, but many are unaware of the poor-quality ingredients too often found in these products.

Low-Quality Ingredient Watch List Chicken: This is problematic when a single, meat ingredient is 80 percent water, losing most of its weight during processing and likely falling to the third or fourth ingredient. Corn, Wheat, Soy: Cheap fillers, these can lead to obesity, diabetes, allergies and poor digestion. Animal Digest: This could be from any animal source, some of which are too disgusting to mention. Meat By-product Meal: This could be anything. Parts are parts. Beef Tallow: This is generally low in linoleic acid, essential for your pet’s skin and coat.

What type of food is nutritionally better for my pet? A raw diet is ideal for pets such as dogs and cats. Of the three broad types of pet food: kibble, canned food and raw diet, raw diet is how dogs and cats naturally eat, with digestive systems designed for raw meat consumption. Yet, too often, we feed them foods that are heavily processed, cooking out most nutrients. Unlike these processed foods, a raw diet contains essential, natural bacteria and enzymes and is comprised of a very highly digestible protein and a very low amount of carbohydrates which often cause major obesity problems in pets. Raw diet foods are now available in convenient fresh, frozen and dehydrated varieties. This higher-quality pet food, which may sometimes be costlier, is an expense that typically balances out as pets usually require less food to meet their nutritional needs and is likely to result in savings on vet visits and health costs. A raw diet also often improves appetite and digestion, results in allergy relief, helps provide a vibrant skin and coat, stimulates healthy teeth and gums, provides greater stamina and vitality, and encourages a healthy immune system.

How can I create a better diet for my pet? Entering our 25th year, Pet Saver emphasizes feeding your pets the most nutritious foods available. We carry several, excellent brands of natural and alternative pet food, such as Orijin, Acana, Country Naturals, Zignature, NutriSource, Earthborn, Primal, Stella and Chewy’s among many others. We have solutions for many pet nutrition concerns, and a brief discussion with us can help you find a better pet food. Our educated associates can help you create a nutritional diet to meet your pet’s unique needs based on age, breed, health concerns and activity level. Visit us today at one of our four locations: Webster, Brighton, Greece and our newest addition complete with a pet treat bakery, Victor, Mon-Sat: 9am-9pm, Sun: 10am-6pm.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Platelet Donations Are Perfectly Safe

SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Set out a nativity scene Make a nativity scene the primary focus of Christmas decorations and encourage children to play with the figures and act out the Christmas story.

Magic Maze PORK

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am writing about platelet donations. As a way of giving back, I donate platelets. I was wondering if there is a time that a person should stop donating, based on age or difficulty. I am 61 years old, and the past three times I’ve donated, I felt uncomfortable in some way. Either my arm or wrist hurt, or I had a feeling of malaise during the donating process. One time, I was told that my platelet count was on the low side, but it was not any danger to my well-being. I feel well immediately afterward and do not have health issues, so my concern is whether this is somehow detrimental to my own health as I age. -- S.B. ANSWER: Platelet donation generally is a very well-tolerated procedure. The platelets are removed from the donor’s blood via a process called apheresis; a centrifuge separates the blood into four components: plasma (containing proteins), platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells. For platelet donors, just the platelets are removed, and the rest of the blood components are returned to the donor. In order to keep the blood from clotting inside the machine, sodium citrate is added to the apheresis machine. This reduces the calcium, which is needed for blood clotting. However, some people can develop symptoms of low calcium during the apheresis. This can be treated by slowing the rate of donation, or by taking some oral calcium before donating. More-severe cases might require giving intravenous calcium to the patient via another IV catheter. The Food and Drug Administration recommends that people make no more than 24 donations per year, but there is good evidence that platelet donation is safe. I congratulate you on being a communityminded citizen, and I can reassure you that you have very little short-term risk and essentially zero long-term risk from donating platelets, whatever your age. Donate as often as is comfortable, and try taking a calcium supplement before donating. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have taken 5 mg zolpidem (Ambien) nightly for about three years. My doctor seems to think this is acceptable. I sleep five to six hours with this aid and function normally in the morning. Recently I was told that this drug has a cumulative effect on the body. Would you verify this? Over-thecounter sleep aids have no effect, and this drug seems to be the only way I can sleep. -- D.M. ANSWER: Zolpidem and its cousins, eszopiclone (Lunesta) and zaleplon (Sonata), work for a relatively short time in the body before they are metabolized, so they do not build up in the body. They are mostly gone in the morning, and grogginess is not a problem for most people. However, people often develop a dependence on these medications; it becomes difficult to sleep without them. More importantly, they do increase the risk of falls and auto accidents, especially when used every day and in people over 65. I don’t recommend them for the long term, and I have referred my patients who can’t sleep without them to a sleep specialist, who sometimes (but not always) is able to find a better solution than daily Ambien. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Finding work after 50 Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. • Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Arian penchant for impatience shows, as you consider passing a problemprone project on to someone else. Best advice: Stay with it and work out those snarls yourself. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Even patient Bovines can be frustrated when carefully made plans go awry. But crank up that “stick-to-it-ivity” you do so well, and you’ll soon find that your schedule is back in sync. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your aspect favors using more resourceful means in dealing with a workplace situation. Some discreet checking around could help shed light on the root cause of the problem. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You show an unusually strong streak of stubbornness in rejecting suggestions from friends and/or family members early in the week. But you become more receptive by the week’s end. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat might find a gentler approach more effective when dealing with those who resist needed changes. Remember, the word “persuasion” starts with the sound “purr.” VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A disappointing experience with someone you felt you could trust can be painful. But there just might be more to this situation than you’re aware of. Press for an explanation. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Changing your views about something you believe in isn’t easy. But you might reconsider as the facts come in. Keep your mind open, even if you’re uneasy about what you might learn. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might have to do some serious shifting of gears to get your project back on track. But cheer up. Your hard work starts to produce some positive results by the week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unsettling mood at the start of the week soon lifts and gives way to a more positive attitude as you find fun and friendship beginning to dominate your aspect. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A delay in firming up holiday plans could work to your advantage. Use this time to scout out possibilities that might be more in line with what those close to you would prefer. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Some people might question some of the new friends you’ve welcomed into your life. But your ability to see beyond the obvious helps you recognize how special they are. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Financial matters can be especially tricky this week. It’s best to follow a conservative investment path for now, and wait for a more fortuitous time to take a bolder approach. BORN THIS WEEK: Your warmth, your humor and your genuine concern for others make you someone people love to keep close to their lives. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

MECHANIC NEEDED German Brothers Marina on beautiful Canandaigua Lake in upstate NY is currently seeking out an engine technician to join our team. Our Marina was founded in 1977 by brothers Peter and Rick German who still work daily on-site managing and assisting in the day-to-day operation of the marina. Along with boat sales, we also rent boats, provide summer and winter storage, have a full service gas dock and service department, as well as a retail store. Our full time staff is made up of seasoned employees that each have their own niche within the company and have helped German Brothers Marina to be so successful over the years. Now we are looking to take our service department to a new level and are hoping to find the right technician to help us reach that goal. We are looking for a technician with at least 5 years proven experience working on engines, marine experience is a plus. You will be responsible for troubleshooting minor and major repairs, as well as routine maintenance on boats and jet skis. Current Mercury, Mercruiser, Volvo or Yamaha certifications are preferred, but training is provided for our employees online and through instructor led classes to earn and maintain the proper certifications. We offer a competitive hourly rate based on experience and an outstanding benefits package including medical and dental insurance, paid holidays, sick time, vacation time and 401k. We also provide you with plenty of opportunity for high-paying overtime hours in the spring and fall. This is a full time, year round position and the opening is immediate! Can you imagine yourself getting paid to test drive luxury boats on beautiful Canandaigua Lake? Please send a cover letter and resume by email to Katie@germanbrothers.com or apply in person at 3907 West Lake Road Canandaigua, NY.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.
