Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

Is anybody upset about a recent change to our [local restaurant] here in our [local town]? The beautiful landscaping was destroyed and the building was made to have a cold appearance. Our [local town] certainly deserved better than this monstrosity. Recently my friend and I went to lunch at a small restaurant in our [local town]. The room was crowded, and we were all very close. In came a woman with a severe bronchial infection and sat
at the table right next to us. She proceeded to cough her way through the entire lunch, disregarding all the patrons around her. Both of us now have severe colds. Ironically, we are both infectious disease nurses. Please stay home and keep your germs to yourself. To the driver of a purple vehicle: Slow down before you kill someone! After the town hall meeting addressing public water access, I left disgusted at my “neighbors” and local farmer’s negative and uninformed opinions. With climate changing, many residential wells don’t produce water like they used to. Can the farm’s water be next? Then what? Public water causes autism due
to medical waste in the lakes? Now there’s a real reason to be against it. The air we breathe is polluted so stop breathing. If you prefer your washed clothes to be gray or dingy or nasty teeth due to drinking your well water so be it. I don’t. My well is good, but I want better! I want my neighbors’ water to be better! I would gladly give up vices to help my neighbor. “Move back to the city” What a GREAT answer! It may not cost you as much if you do your homework. I am so upset that someone can hit my car and take off without reporting it or leaving a note. They had to know they hit my car because the bumper and the hatchback is dented; also, the taillight was broken. I know that accidents happen, but to just leave is totally WRONG!
Brighter Side The Memorial Day Detachment # 468 of the Marine Corps League would like to thank everyone who donated to the Toys for Tots campaign this year. The generosity of everyone who donated or provided a space for our collection boxes enabled us to distribute over 6200 toys to children who might otherwise not have received any toys for Christmas. We appreciate the agencies and individuals who helped to distribute the toys to the individuals who were in need. We look forward to working with everyone again next year. Big thank you to a worker at Advantage Auto Stores who changed my plates for
me at no charge. Having a small infant and a husband away on business, this act of kindness really meant a lot to me. We went to KRONY’S on Jan. 4th. My family and I ordered pizza, which is always YUMMY! We decided to try Stromboli’s and must say that they were EXCEPTIONAL! Next time, I will request more ricotta, and I’m sure they will accommodate my needs, because when you go to Krony’s, they go out of their way to make your dining experience a pleasant one. As soon as I walked in JOEY greeted me by NAME!!
He is ALWAYS nice, as well as CINDY. No matter what kind of a day they are having, they always make the customers feel welcomed and appreciated. What more could anyone ask for?? Delicious food coupled with wonderful employees who make the visit such a delight! A shout out to JOEY, CINDY, and all the other hard-working employees!!!! We LOVE KRONY’S! Thank you to the gentleman who stopped to help me, after I skidded off the road into a ditch in my Tahoe on Rt. 21 in Manchester, Sun., Dec. 30th, 2018 at 6:15 AM. He was pulling out of his driveway as it happened. I am so thankful for his help. I was a little disoriented and did not get his name. He got
in my vehicle and got it out of the ditch and back on Rt. 21. Thank you so much for your help and being there to help. It is nice to know that there are people out there willing to help!

The French have an old custom called “une loterie d’amour,” which is a drawing for love. INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IMPROVES PATIENT EXPERIENCE FOR WOMEN UNDERGOING BREAST CANCER TREATMENT (NAPSI)—A mother, a sister, a friend…many of us know someone who has been touched by breast cancer, the most common cancer among women, affecting an astonishing one in eight women in the United States. Thanks to technological advances in detection and new treatment approaches, women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer can opt to keep their breast with less invasive surgery and with breastconserving treatments. In fact, the American Cancer Society estimates that 59 percent of women with an early breast cancer diagnosis (Stage 1 or 2) undergo breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) versus 36 percent of women who decide to have a total mastectomy. Research has shown that breast-conserving surgery followed by radiation therapy is as effective as a mastectomy in decreasing the risk of local cancer recurrence for most women*. “One way that breast-conserving surgery is now easier is due to a new innovation in breast cancer treatment—SAVI SCOUT® Radar Localization. This resolves one of the most difficult aspects of breast conservation surgery by eliminating the need to place a wire inside of the breast tissue to locate a tumor,” said Dr. Barry Rosen, Chairman of Department of Surgery at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Chicago; and Assistant Professor, University of Illinois College of Medicine. “Many of my patients who have undergone a procedure with SCOUT® are impressed with the benefits, including shorter procedure times and decreased anxiety.” Prior to 2015, surgeons generally relied on wire localization to locate a tumor during a lumpectomy procedure. With wire localization, a radiologist guides a thin, hooked wire through the skin and into the tumor on the day of surgery. The surgeon then uses the wire to identify the area of tissue targeted for removal. This resulted in long days of surgery for women, with two procedures performed on the same day. With SCOUT, a tiny reflector, the size of a grain of rice, is placed at the tumor site at any time during the patient’s treatment and well in advance of surgery. The SCOUT Wire-Free Radar Breast Localization System uses safe, nonradioactive, radar technology to provide real-time and precise surgical guidance during the surgery. The ability to precisely locate tumors increases the probability of complete cancer removal and reduces the likelihood of needing follow-up surgery, allowing any additional treatments to occur sooner. In addition, the ability to strategically plan the incision may result in better cosmetic outcomes. SCOUT is also used to effectively localize lymph nodes and tumors prior to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (chemotherapy administered prior to surgery) and can be used with any type of imaging over the course of a patient’s care. More than 350 hospitals have implemented the SCOUT System, and to date, over 45,000 women have had a wire-free localization experience. MAKE CUT FLOWERS LAST LONGER Treat the water To preserve flowers, do your best to reduce bacteria, provide a food source for the flowers and manage the pH so that the uptake of water will continue to be strong. Sugar can be an adequate food source. Gardenista, a floral arrangement and gardening resource, tested a variety of methods for preserving flowers and found much of the same results across the board. These included vinegar and sugar, conventional flower food, bleach, aspirin, and a penny. The bleach, aspirin, copper penny, and vinegar work as antibacterial agents. The sugar and the plant food help nourish the blooms. In the trials, most of the blooms remained strong for three to four days.

Bella’s Bumbas Gives Joy & Mobility to Over 670 Children Around the Globe by Amanda Dudek etirement may be a chance to relax, but Marty Parzynski and his wife Rebecca Orr have no intention of slowing down. Instead, their lives of this Webster couple took a dramatic turn when their great niece, Bella, was born with Spina Bifida in June 2015. “We were surprised. No one knew in vitro,” said Orr. “As she grew, the doctors saw no movement in her legs. She was paralyzed.” As Bella continued to grow, her struggle became more apparent. “She was frustrated because she couldn’t crawl,” Parzynski recalled. “When other babies would crawl away, she couldn’t follow.” It was Bella’s heartbreaking struggle that would become Parzynski and Orr’s inspiration. Rebecca Orr began to believe there must be something she and Marty could do to help baby Bella be more mobile. She searched the internet and came across a blueprint for a softshell baby seat wheelchair. She showed the blueprint to her husband. “I worked it out,” says Parzynski. “I used a softshell infant support seat, 12-inch bicycle tires and constructed the whole chair in about three hours.” Bella was nearly a year old when her great aunt and uncle gave her this new mobility chair, and her reaction was nothing short of incredible. “Almost immediately, we saw what it did for her,” said Parzynski. “Her personality came out. Her happiness came out. We also saw what it did for her parents to see their little girl moving on her own. We couldn’t help but think, ëWhat about the others?’” Orr and Parzynski decided to test the waters. “We put our chair out on Facebook,” said Orr. “People began asking for them.” “We thought maybe we would make 20-30 of these chairs,” Parzynski chimed in. “But requests kept coming in. We were scrounging for parts. Around the 10th chair, we established Bella’s Bumbas as a nonprofit in May 2017. We have now made 676 chairs, and it hasn’t been two years yet!” Parzynski explained that the need is great. Wheelchairs for children ages infant to five years old are often not covered by insurance as they are not considered necessary. Commercially, a very small child’s wheelchair typically starts around $800. “We don’t charge for our chairs,” said Parzynski. “Families with special needs children are very often strapped financially already. We just ask people to pay the shipping.” “Sometimes, shipping is even to great a cost,” added Orr. “We ship all over the United States, and we have shipped chairs to 26 countries worldwide as awareness continues to spread. Some families, when they request a chair, express that they cannot afford the shipping, and within days, someone will donate for just the shipping. People do fundraisers just for shipping. It’s incredible.” As Parzynski’s mobility chairs, Bella’s Bumbas, are making their way into more and more homes and countries, others are also taking up the cause. “We have two designated volunteers in other countries now: one in Indonesia and one in Malaysia,” said Orr. “Wahyu Widayati, our Indonesian volunteer, made a presentation to the local Rotary and gained approval for half the shipping cost for 10 chairs to Indonesia.” Parzynski shared another story in which, about a year ago, a family in Germany needed a chair, but the cost of shipping was prohibitive. So, the child’s grandfather asked if he could make the chair himself. Parzynski and Orr sent the blueprints and notes back and forth via the internet, and the man was able to build the chair on his own. Now, he has established a similar nonprofit in Germany called Lina’s Rollis, and that nonprofit is also filling requests for mobility chairs. As Parzynski and Orr are approached with the new challenges of families with children in need, Parzynski continues to develop new adaptations, and the chairs continue to evolve. “We started out with a softshell model,” said Parzynski. “We moved onto a hardshell and made a few different sizes. We now have 6 different models. I have recently invented a chair that can be moved and steered with one hand. I’ve created extensions so that they chair can be used longer. We also make little trailers.” Parsynski described a chair request for a child with Caudal Regression for which the child’s grandmother sent in a special seat to be crafted into a mobility chair. Since then, Parzynski has received more requests and created more of these chairs. While every child and chair are memorable, there is one child that quickly came to both Parzynski’s and Orr’s minds: Brooklyn. “I think Brooklyn stands out because her chair was our first challenge,” said Parzynski. “Brooklyn was on oxygen and feed pumps. She couldn’t be detached from them. So, we created a chair with a longer base and a basket on the back to hold these necessary items. Then, she was able to just move around on her own.” Parzynski and Orr explain that It means so much to these children to be able to move for themselves. They are so excited. For the parents, it is so often the little things like knocking things over and playing hide and seek, things most people take for granted, that are so meaningful. Parzynski mentioned a dad who sent Bella’s Bumbas a thank you note because it was the first time his son was able to participate on an Easter egg hunt for himself. Even with the outpouring of gratitude and being on CBS, Channel 8’s Extraordinary People, Spectrum Live in the Morning and a recent interview by KLOVE, Parzynski and Orr remain humble. “We just made a device for

mobility, that’s all, but here’s what started to happen. Bella was told she would never walk, now she is looking at a walker because her upper body has become so strong using her chair. Children on oxygen are seeing decreased dependency at times because they have built up their lung capacity,” said Parzynski, and he admits they couldn’t do it alone. “We are so grateful for those who volunteer with us.” He introduced George who claims his wife Carol left him on the doorstep, but Orr says George and Carol never miss an event, Dee one of Parzynski’s fellow Xerox retirees who says he was so impressed with Bella’s Bumbas that he is once again working with Parzynski who he says is an engineering genius, Spencer who belongs to the Webster Rotary and was so impressed with Parzynski and Orr’s presentation that he decided to volunteer himself, also Bonnie who helps with packaging the chairs and Laurel, a niece who is Bella’s Bumbas acting secretary. Going forward, Parzynski and Orr see a need for more volunteers and greater support. “We need to train volunteers to answer emails, work with families to determine what their needs are, handle paperwork, complete shipping and things like that,” said Orr. “We are working on this project 7 days a week and putting in over 40 hours.” Parzynski added, “At this point, we are looking for one or more corporate sponsors. Until now, we have been completely funded by donations and fundraisers. Warning Signs Your Aging Parents Need More Help (NAPS)—Home care agencies often see a surge in calls in late December and early January. Why? Many grown children head home for the holidays and notice their aging parents need some help. Here are ways to tell: Take The Sniff Test - Breathe in that holiday hug. If you notice unclean clothes or an uncharacteristic body odor, that could signal that a parent is having trouble bathing, maintaining personal hygiene or keeping up with household chores such as laundry. Next, follow your nose to the kitchen. Open the fridge. You’ll notice pretty quickly if there’s spoiled food—but your parents may not. The sense of smell diminishes with age, expecially after 70. Many seniors can’t detect unpleasant odors that would normally tell them it’s time to toss last week’s meat loaf. If the sniff test reveals some olfactory oddities, it might not just be “normal aging.” Diminished sense of smell can be an early indicator of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. If you sense something isn’t quite right, help Mom or Dad to set up a doctor’s visit to see if there’s something else going on. Have A Look Around - Your childhood home may look the same as ever—but it may not work as well for older adults. As people age, their environment typically needs simple upgrades to keep them safe. You can significantly reduce fall risks by taping down throw rugs, removing extra furniture, securing electrical cords out of pathways and adding grab bars in the bathroom. Pay attention to clutter as well. Stacks of unopened mail, broken appliances or drooping houseplants may also signal a need for help. Being unable to manage everyday activities can be a symptom of depression or of cognitive impairment, which often presents like depression. If you see any of the above warning signs, you may want to arrange for your parent to see a doctor and for family members or professional caregivers to stop by and help with projects and chores. Just knowing your parents have help and resources can relieve worry, both yours and theirs. Listen Up - Is the TV or radio volume blaring? Are conversations repeated? Does Mom keep asking “what?” or just smiling and nodding instead of participating? Don’t brush it off. Difficulty following conversations may be a sign of hearing loss, cognitive impairment or both. Seniors who begin losing their hearing are at greater risk of developing dementia over time since hearing is a brain function. Sometimes, hearing aids stimulate the sounds needed for the brain to restore organization and correctly process sounds. Making Sense Of Your Senses - Talking to parents about warning signs you’ve noticed isn’t fun. But do it anyway. Let them know you want to be involved to help them stay independent for as long as possible. --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 71 years old, stand 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weigh 325 pounds. The “average” person is half my size, yet when I get medication for various ailments (e.g., gout, pain, flu shots, etc.) I get the standard dose. I assume I have more physical mass as well as a larger blood supply, which leads me to the conclusion that I am receiving a smaller concentration of medicine than the typical patient. Am I correct? -- M.K. ANSWER: All medicines have concentrations at which they work optimally. Too low a dose and they aren’t effective, and too high a dose increases risk of toxicity. Some drugs have a very small range that’s both effective and nontoxic, and these are referred to as having a “narrow toxic to therapeutic ratio.” Others have a very large range where they are effective and nontoxic, such as most over-the-counter pain medicines and flu shots. Penicillin has a very wide toxic to therapeutic ratio, but I use that example precisely because some people will have an allergic reaction. There is no drug -- prescribed, over-the-counter or supplement -that is either perfectly safe while being effective, or perfectly effective while being safe, for every person. The concentration of the drug in the appropriate area of the body (sometimes blood, sometimes the affected organ, sometimes urine) may depend on the dose as well as your characteristics. Despite being much larger than average, your blood volume is probably only a little above the average, since the increased bone mass, muscle mass and, in most people your size, fat mass are disproportionate to the blood. Some medicines go to the blood, others to “lean body mass” and still others preferentially to fat. So while you are correct that you are getting a smaller concentration of medicine, that’s still OK most of the time. For medications that need to be dosed precisely, those with a narrow toxic to therapeutic ratio (such as some antibiotics, heart medication and chemotherapy), the dosing is based on height, weight, age and sometimes kidney and liver function. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 80 years old, in good health with no cancer in the family. Up to now, I have always had regular Pap smears and mammograms. Now I am aware that there are different thoughts as to whether those tests are needed at my age. What is your advice? -- J.G. ANSWER: For Pap smears, there is very good evidence that women who have never had any problems with their Pap smears by age 65 are very unlikely to ever develop any, and I agree with the recommendation by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force to stop them at age 65. Mammograms are more controversial, but my personal practice is to continue to recommend them for most women until about age 75. I stop recommending mammograms to women when they have an underlying medical condition that makes it unlikely that they will receive benefit from continued screening. Deciding when that is takes some experience and a lot of discussion with the patient and sometimes her family. There is no absolute age cutoff for mammograms, and getting a mammogram on a healthy 80-year-old might make sense. Getting a mammogram on a woman with incurable lung cancer, for example, does not. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
