MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On March 26, 1987, responding to a 911 call, police raid the Philadelphia home of Gary Heidnik and find a veritable torture chamber where three women were chained to a sewer pipe. Scavenger hunt A family scavenger hunt can make for a fun afternoon activity full of education and a bit of friendly competition. For smaller children, focusing on counting skills can be a good way to add education to the activity. Have them look for things like five red rocks, three yellow leaves and one penny. For older kids, make nature your inspiration and have them seek more specific items, such as a certain type of tree leaf, a specific flower or a bird feather from a popular local bird. Arm them with a nature book or diagram so they can learn about each item as they look for it. The great thing about scavenger hunts is they can be done anywhere. Stay close to home and have the hunt in your neighborhood, head to your local nature center, or plan a special scavenger hunt on your next family vacation. You may even offer a prize for participants.

BEE SAFE W HILE GARDENING TO PROTECT POLLINATORS Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property.

Appointment companions are a smart move Visits to a physician are just one step people make in an effort to improve their well-being. While it’s important that everyone visit their physicians at least once a year for a checkup, seniors may need to see their physicians more frequently than other age groups. When visiting the doctor, it is easy for anyone to miss important components of what the doctor is saying, and it’s just as easy to misunderstand certain instructions or medication information. Seniors who bring companions along to appointments with their physicians can reduce the risk of misunderstanding advice or diagnoses given by their doctors. Data from U.S. News and World Report states that about one-third of seniors still living on their own take a companion with them to their routine doctor’s office visits. Companions are typically spouses, but they can include children or other family members as well. Patients may find there are many advantages to bringing someone along to an appointment. And companions may want to learn more about patients’ goals at each appointment prior to going along so they can prepare and know how to help during the appointment. Listen People tend to forget at least half of what they hear in the doctor’s office, says the Archives of Internal Medicine. This tendency may be increased when patients are nervous about the potential outcome of their visits. Bringing a companion along means that both people are actively listening. Together, the information they’ve heard can combine to provide a full account of the visit.

Taking notes Companions can jot down important notes about the appointment, such as dates and times for follow-up visits, medication advice and any other instructions that may be forgotten once the patient leaves the office. Companions can later translate the jargonheavy language of a physician into an understandable language the patient can fully understand. Medical history Sometimes a companion can be a useful resource, calling a doctor’s attention to a patient’s prior hospitalizations and illnesses. Companions can even call attention to any medications the patient is currently taking. Serving as an advocate Very often a companion can operate as a patient advocate, clarifying questions or getting further information out of a doctor if the patient is hesitant to ask. If the information isn’t clear, the companion can raise red flags or ask to have the instructions put in a different light. Translation Sometimes patients need companions who speak their native languages when their physicians do not. People are learning that bringing a family member or friend along to doctors’ appointments can be a smart way to make the most of doctor/patient interactions.

We are a group of Traffic Control/Crossing Guards hired September 2016 at Victor High School. We have gotten a lot of thank yous from faculty, parents, teachers and students alike. As the weather changes it does get colder as winter sets in. At Christmas time the faculty, parents and students gave us hand warmers, hot chocolate, donuts and other gift cards to show their appreciation. Well, the group of us, about 12 guards, wish to thank the faculty and parents for showing us as a group their appreciation. We want to send to all who appreciate us to a Big Thank You! Victor Crossing Guards
A couple weeks ago my granddaughter was to leave for, college on a Sunday. Her car started to make a noise; she stopped by Zirbel’s on Saturday, they weren’t open; however,
there was a man there getting ready to leave. He took her car in for a quick fix, checked oil and put air in the tires and sent her on her way. You can’t beat customer service like that. Thank you to whomever at Zirbel’s. Last night we had a problem with our electricity and my husband called our utility provider (National Grid) who sent out crews to assess the situation. These men were not only extremely polite, but were working in frigid temperatures, until after three in the morning. They were determined to keep working until the problem was solved. Yes, perhaps they do make good money, but no amount would be worth it to me to be hanging on to the top of a pole in the freezing temps! I think that too many times we overlook the work that these men and women do. University Eye employees went the extra mile demonstrating that they are committed to serving the needs of their clients! Thank you for taking the time to resolve a difficult circumstance for our dad! Your thoughtfulness had a positive impact on our family and will be remembered!!
To those who visit local cemetery after hours. Please be considerate and visit only during posted visiting hours. We know you are grieving, and we, as neighbors, keep watch for any suspicious activity. If you are visiting after 8pm, you are not following the rules. We know who the “regulars” are, and those who may have other intentions for being back there...beyond 8pm and into the wee hours of the morning. The area is patrolled by local police, and we have been instructed to report any suspicious activity. Please be considerate, to those who have loved ones buried there, and to us neighboring the cemetery. I recently had to have an ambulance ride to the local hospital, staffed by unpaid volunteers. The dispatcher also sent a paramedic from a local town. Medicare paid for the expense of the ambulance thankfully. A few weeks later I received a bill for the paramedic service - $1700 (for
30 minutes of time). As a retired Emergency nurse I was appalled at the amount, especially since he was unable to start an IV, did a minimal history and seemed to be very unhappy to be there at 3am. The amount is in excess of my retirement income by several hundred dollars! Everyone please be aware that ‘ALS care’ may not be covered by Medicare and is an out of pocket expense whether the care is good or not.
While at a local store, a customer had a shopping cart with about 20 items sectioned into 7 clusters. I was VERY patient but being the only 2 people in the store and after you looked right at me while I was holding my 1 item the least you could have said was “want to go ahead of me?” I waited for 10 minutes while you made your returns, used your coupons and confused the cashier so much that she gave me a “help me” look. That’s when I just gently said, “do you think I can just have my 1 item checked out?” to which she yelled wait your **** turn. Moral of the story.....she was in her 70’s and I’m in my 50’s....so much for respecting your elders, huh?

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Are Dermatologists ‘Zapping’ for Dollars? DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 73 years old and lived on a boat in my 40s. Now, whenever I go to the dermatologist (two to three times each year), he “zaps” me about 20 times and burns off “cancer cells” or maybe “potential cancer cells.” Some of them have been cancer and were healed with MOHS procedure. While I am grateful for the care he gives me, I also sometimes feel that he zaps because each zap means more money. Can you please clarify this for me? -- G.B. ANSWER: I often get questions like this, where a patient has a concern that their doctor is performing unnecessary medical care for the purpose of enriching himself or herself. I always have trouble believing it, since I can’t really imagine it, but I recently read about an oncologist pleading guilty to treating with chemotherapy people who didn’t really have cancer, which shakes my faith in my profession (and colleagues). Still, I truly believe that, in your case and probably more than 99 percent of the time, the doctor is being extra cautious to treat you for the sole purpose of reducing your likelihood of developing an invasive skin cancer later on. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother lives in Florida. Her major discomfort is fatigue and no energy. I have asked her doctor to please give her a vitamin B-12 injection, even though her B-12, thyroid function, vitamin D and blood count are all in the normal range. Her doctor does not believe in B-12 injections. Do you think it might help? -- J.L. ANSWER: Vitamin B-12 is necessary for proper function in many tissues, but it is critical for blood cell production and neurologic function. B-12 deficiency causes an unmistakable anemia (called megaloblastic anemia) and can cause neurologic and psychiatric disturbances even in some people with no anemia. The blood test for B-12 is quite reliable. The major cause of B-12 deficiency is an autoimmune disease that prevents the stomach from making intrinsic factor, which is necessary for efficient absorption of B-12. B-12 can be absorbed orally by people with pernicious anemia by taking very high doses, such as 1 mg. This gives as good a replacement as injection. It was common 50 years ago to give B-12 injections as a “tonic.” However, it offers no advantages for people with normal B-12 levels beyond the placebo response. As I have noted many times, the placebo response can be very powerful, and 1 mg of B-12 orally is very safe. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard that drinking water with your meal is bad for you. Is this true? And if so, why? I have a dry mouth due to cancer treatment and must have water with everything I eat. Is something bad going to happen to me? I am otherwise healthy. -- R.G. ANSWER: It’s not true at all. Water is, generally speaking, the healthiest drink. It is possible to drink too much water, but it’s very hard to do so unless you are taking medications that affect your kidneys or you have excess anti-diuretic hormone, an unusual medical condition. Keep drinking your water. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

Fill your openings fast by placing your ad in the Employment Section. Call 226-8111, 343-3111, 393-1111 or 637-5100 BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant. Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Pay In Advance Not all restaurants will allow it, but when making the reservation ask if it’s possible the pay the bill prior to the dinner. Ideally, the bill should not come to the table. However, if the restaurant won’t allow the bill to be paid in advance, grab it once it’s left on the table and then quickly look it over before paying. Never argue over the bill when hosting a client for dinner. If need be, save the receipt and call the restaurant the following day.
