Did You Know? Animals verbalize in many different ways to communicate. One thing cat owners may notice is that cats have a tendency to meow as a form of speaking with humans. However, according to the North Shore Animal League America, cats almost never meow at other cats, as meowing is a sound generally reserved for interacting with humans. Cat owners should talk back to their cats often, as cats enjoy hearing their own names and their owners’ voices.

I need a home Charlie is a 10-yearold Lab mix who weighs 64 pounds. He loves his daily walks and a longer hike once in a while. He tends to be wary of strangers and children so a home with adults only is best for him. He’ll need some help getting more comfortable with meeting new people. Charlie would make a great “only” dog but, with the right match, may do fine with a dog you already have. He will need to meet any dogs you have in your home to make sure they’re going to be friends. Charlie can be seen by making an appointment with Rebecca Lohnes at rlohnes@lollypop.org or 585-223-1330 X258. PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

After a long season of use, fireplaces need to be cleaned. Many homeowners think this is a job that can be put off until the fall, but spring is an ideal season to have the chimney and flue cleaned and inspected. One reason to include scrubbing the chimney as part of spring cleaning is to cut down on odor. After using a fireplace, a buildup of creosote forms in the chimney. As the weather gets warmer, creosote deposits can start to smell sour and that odor will seep into the home. In addition, moisture can mix with the creosote and start to degrade the flue liner, necessitating costly repairs. The sooner a chimney and flue are cleaned the better. A chimney sweep can do a thorough job of scrubbing down the chimney and fireplace and ensuring that everything will be in working order come next season.

AUTOMATIC STANDBY GENERATORS PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO LAWN DAMAGE Lack of sunlight: All plants need the proper ratio of sunlight to grow. Too much sunlight and plant blades can scorch. Too little sunlight and grass may turn brown and die. Although there are shade-tolerant varieties of grass, homeowners also can explore alternative landscapes. Work in a garden bed or create a design that utilizes gravel or mulch. Avoid aggressively pruning back trees to give the lawn more sunlight in that area, as this may just damage the trees.

585-802-1544 SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.

Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape. Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.

KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Fight intruders with odor. Stray cats may mistake gardens for litter boxes and enter them to relieve themselves. Preventing such intrusions can be as simple as placing items around the garden to reduce the likelihood that gardens will be mistaken for litter boxes. Peels from oranges and lemons or coffee grounds can be placed in the garden and can emit odors strong enough to deter cats.

CORRAL ENTRYWAY CLUTTER Create cabinet space. Store items in cabinets so they are organized but out of sight. This way belongings are not just left on an entryway table.

DID YOU KNOW? One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location. In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day. Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible. Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing. 1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias. 2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

For w armer climates, a w ide-brimmed hat w ill guard against sunburn, overheating and overexposure. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You easily handle your tasks this week, thanks to those high energy levels that never seem to run down. But pace yourself, Lamb, for the demanding week ahead. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) With the arts dominant this week, you might want to pick up any of those creative projects you’ve neglected. A workplace situation benefits from some fresh insight. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Music helps replenish your energy levels. Stream your playlist if you must. But a live concert could prove more rewarding, especially if you go with that very special someone. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Close friends reach out to help perk up your lagging social life. That workplace situation also eases, leaving you time to do more fun things by week’s end. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A revelation clears up that perplexing job-related problem. Some changes will have to be made, which, no doubt, will meet with the Big Cat’s roaring approval. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Reaching out to someone in need is the noble thing to do. But try to restrain the temptation to add a lecture -- no matter how wellintended -- to your good deed. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) There could be another tough challenge to face before the month is over. But all that hard work is winning you lots of important recognition from your peers. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Keeping to your work schedule could prove difficult with all those personal distractions. Best advice: Stay with it. There’ll be time later for socializing. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Jumping hurdles this week might be vexing for most, but not for the sage Sagittarian, who recognizes that meeting a challenge can open up opportunities. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) More obstacles might be thrown in your path as you try to finalize a new agreement. But the sure-footed Goat ignores the stumbling blocks and stays the course. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) We know the Water Bearer takes pleasure in giving to others. But why not let someone else enjoy the experience too by accepting that offer of help? PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might find that you need to ease up on your hectic schedule this week. Don’t fret about it. It could be helpful to take a break and replenish your energy supply. Buffalo Bill Joins Women’s Flag Football Fundraiser RivAlz Blondes vs. Brunettes supports Alzheimer’s Association WNY By Monica Pomeroy The RivAlz Blondes vs. Brunettes women’s flag football game organized as a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association® Western New York Chapter is getting a boost from a Buffalo Bill. Linebacker Lorenzo Alexander is lending his expertise to the program as honorary chairman for the May 5 game that pits teams against each other based on hair color. The game also serves as a reminder of the toll Alzheimer’s takes not only on those living with a diagnosis, but care partners, family members, friends and co-workers. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that cannot be prevented, slowed or cured and across New York State, its impact is devastating: close to 400,000 individuals are living with dementia, with another one-million people providing some kind of direct care for those individuals. The Alzheimer’s Association provides resources to all those impacted with free educational programs, on-line communities for caregivers and those living with the disease, access to resources across WNY such as support groups, professional training and a 24/7 toll-free Helpline staffed by master’s level clinicians. “I am honored to advise such a dedicated team of athletes who not only work hard to play, but they work hard to raise awareness about dementia and the work of the local Chapter,” said Alexander. Alexander is a Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee, which is presented annually by the National

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property.

Beware of Lyme Disease Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by the bite of an infected deer tick. Ticks can be hard to see, as they may only be about the size of a pin-head. Since Lyme disease first became reportable in 1986, over 95,000 cases have been confirmed in New York State. Cases peak in the summer months. Lyme disease is very serious and can become crippling or debilitating if not properly diagnosed and treated with antibiotics. Serious risks from Lyme disease can be reduced if the tick is removed within 36 hours. Anyone who plays or works outside is at an increased risk. Ticks most commonly live in cool, moist environments, and can be found in tall grassy areas, garden areas, around shrubs and in wooded areas. The public can be at risk while mowing lawns, picking up leaves, or other outdoor activities. Deer, birds, mice, and other animals can transport ticks into your yard. There are several things you can do to protect yourself and your family from tick bites. Below are some basic tips to follow: • Keep your lawn mowed and cut down brushy areas. • Avoid areas that may be infested such as, tall, grassy, moist areas. • Use protective measures. If you know you will be walking in tall grass wear long sleeves and tuck your pants into your socks and shirt into your pants. Also, try to wear light color clothing so that ticks are more visible. Wear light colored gloves & a hat to protect your head. • Apply insect repellents that contain DEET or Permethrin to clothes and exposed skin according to the manufacturer’s directions. A single springtime application of an acaracide (tick pesticide) in your yard, such as bifenthin, can greatly reduce the number of ticks. • Perform a tick check on yourself, your pets and your children when finished with outside work or play. • If a tick is found, do not apply mineral oil, petroleum jelly, or heat. Use fine-tipped tweezers to remove the tick. Contact your doctor if there are concerns about incomplete tick removal or if a rash or flu-like symptoms develop. By following these guidelines, you can help protect yourself and your family from Lyme disease. For any other questions, or concerns please contact the Livingston County Department of Health at 243-7280 or visit their website at www.livingstoncounty.us/doh.htm.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know about warts. I know they are common in both children and adults. I have one on my thumb. I am 50 years old. Where can the warts spread to? I heard you can find them only on your hands and feet. Is that true? -- J.S. ANSWER: Warts are raised round or oval growths, caused by the human papilloma virus. Although they most commonly occur on the hands and feet, some strains of HPV are more likely to cause warts in the genital region. Warts can appear on any part of your body, and you can spread them from one part of your body to another, as well as from person to person. Warts are more likely to occur in areas of skin that are irritated, such as cuts, scrapes and even areas that are shaved. For this reason, it’s a good idea to treat the wart quickly, preferably before it gets bigger and harder to treat. Over-the-counter wart treatments are most commonly salicylic acid. A nail file or pumice stone to get rid of dead skin first increases effectiveness. Liquid medicine is used for thinner warts, and a plaster is more effective for thicker warts. One home remedy is as follows: Apply silver duct tape to the wart and leave it on for six days. Follow up by soaking the wart and removing any dead skin, then leave the tape off overnight. Repeat the process by applying duct tape for another six days. This is effective in some people. You should see your doctor if these home remedies don’t work.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written many articles about high blood pressure, but I want to know about low blood pressure. What is normal? What is low, and what is dangerously low? I have a heart issue for which I take medication. I want to know if my blood pressure is too low. -- Anon. ANSWER: Among young adults, only 5 percent of men will have a blood pressure below 110/60 or so, and for young women, it’s 90/46. Blood pressure tends to go up with age, so low blood pressure numbers are higher for older adults. For people with healthy hearts, the only time we worry about low blood pressure is if there are symptoms, and the most common symptoms are lightheadedness and fainting. In people with congestive heart failure, low blood pressure usually is not concerning in itself, but because it might indicate that the heart is getting weaker. However, many of the medications used for CHF reduce blood pressure, which can even limit the amount of medication that can be used. In people with blockages in their arteries, too low a blood pressure can cause inadequate blood flow to parts of the heart and cause angina symptoms. The blood pressure is dangerously low when a disease process is causing the low blood pressure. In extreme cases, low blood pressure is one of the most dangerous signs of shock. But in general, for healthy people, low blood pressures are not worrisome.

I wanted to send a quick email to thank you for publishing the Penny Saver! My husband sent in a Give & Take ad a while back in search of broken sewing machines to fix, tune up, and donate to local nonprofits. The response was overwhelming, and although we had lots of machines ready for new homes, the two nonprofits we talked with couldn't take them all. That's when we noticed a note about the nonprofit, Mary's Place, on the Hometown Events page. Mary's Place works with refugees and was really happy to get the machines. The Executive Director let us know that several people have already brought in some of the clothes they've made.

The donations that go to our local library are thrown out, the volunteers don't want to deal with a lot of books so over 50% of the donations go in the garbage. I spoke with 2 different volunteers that confirmed that their board of directors are set on the type of book that they want for the sales and the rest goes in the garbage,

We just wanted to let you know, and to say thank you! I grew up in Penfield and always loved getting the Penny Saver when I was a kid. I moved back to Fairport after almost 20 years away and was so excited to see it was still around. Thanks so much for keeping it going. We love it! Have a great rest of the week. Nonna and Doug

into traffic when they suddenly stopped their cars and came to help me. And, yes, I'll "pay it forward." Ginger Graham, Webster

they also both said that new members are not allowed to make decisions or run for the positions as the people that run the organization have had the jobs for over 20 years and their opinions are the only ones that count, the money belongs to the library and this lazy bunch of administrators are stealing the money from our library, I for one will be donating my books to Goodwill.

I moved my family to a small town to show them how they could be part of a town. This has proven to be the biggest mistake we made. We have never been accepted and only made aware if you didn’t grow up here, you don’t belong here. The people who grew up here are not only dishonest but unethical. So instead of showing my children how a town can embrace new people. They have unfortunately learned how you can be ostracized. We will overcome and hold our heads high knowing we are proud of who we are.

I am not an active member of church. But like many others I went to church on Easter. I chose a close, local church. The Methodist Church in Oakfield. I just wanted to say Thank you to Good Samaritans in parking the congregation for being so lot at a medical building on kind to me and my toddler twin Senator Keating Blvd.: Grateful boys. Throughout the service thanks to a man and two books were offered to occupy women who rescued me (and the boys and snack time. The my walker) struggling to get boys were brought up during the across the lot in the 50mph service and allowed to pick out winds April 4. (Sorry I didn't flowers to give to me. It was a get your names; it was very warm and loving church. impossible to hear in that wind!) Thank you! I was being blown sideways and

To me it's as clear as day, you hit it, you fix it! However, that's not the case! There is a new plow driver hitting mailboxes and the home owners are responsible for them! It's not even in his line of driving, so he is swerving into them. Getting heated over this!

I have been disabled and on a fixed income since 1995. On Feb. 16th I forgot to put my handicap tag on my mirror.

Thanks, Merci, Gracias, Danke, Dziekuje Ci, very much! On 3/22/18 I realized my wallet was missing. Came home and began canceling credit cards, etc. (Didn’t know if it was lost or stolen). On 3/27, TOPS in Avon called; they had my wallet at the Service Counter! So – my heartfelt thanks to whoever found it – everything was in place – money, license, credit cards, etc.!!

When I got back to my car I had a ticket on my windshield. I immediately went to the clerk’s office. They made a copy of my handicap tag to send in with my ticket. I was told it would probably be dismissed since I could prove that I am handicapped and that the court would be in touch and that they still may want me to appear in court. I did get a court date of 3/20/18. Then on 2/24/18 I received a paper in the mail stating I was being fined $80 and it had to be paid within 15 days of the ticket which would be 3/3/18 or the fine would double and after 30 days 3/17/ 18 it would triple. I have no choice but to pay the fine since my court date is 3/20. Is the city that desperate for $$?

A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.
