Upcoming renovation of our online presence too! www.georgetownwineandspirits.com DID YOU KNOW? Charcoal grills can remain hot for hours, even long after the flames have extinguished. As a result, charcoal grill users should recognize that their jobs are not done once the burgers, hot dogs and other foods have been removed from the grill. To safeguard against fires resulting from still-hot charcoal grills, grillmasters should avoid moving the grill while the coals are still burning hot. In addition, avoid placing any flammable objects close to the grill while the coals are cooling down. Potentially combustible items should also be kept far away from charcoal grills, ideally in locations where gusts of wind cannot blow them toward the grill. Charcoal grill owners can also inspect the metal grates on their grills to make sure they are not rusted. Damaged or rusted grates can make it possible for items to fall down onto surfaces below the grate, increasing the risk of fire. Another way for charcoal grill users to make using their grills more safe is to avoid the use of starter fluid or other igniters once the coals have been ignited. Doing so only increases the risk of fire or accident and is unlikely to help the coals maintain a strong flame that lasts long enough to cook foods quickly.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

SWEET SOLUTIONS FOR A SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL YEAR (NAPSI)—A new school year is upon us, and as students everywhere gear up for an exciting time of learning ahead, the best way to set them up for success is to gather all their back-to-school essentials. Help your child start the year on the right foot with these four tips for packing his or her backpack. Each pointer will keep any student on his or her A game for a fun and eventful first day. 1. Make a statement with your backpack. Select a pack that gives your child confidence to start a conversation with other students. Having favorite characters in common can begin any great friendship. 2. Carry the right writing utensils. Include a pencil case with pencils, highlighters, colorful pens, erasers and sticky notes to keep your child organized throughout the day. 3. Think beyond school supplies. Prepare your child for anything by adding nontraditional items such as an extra pair of glasses, sunscreen, an umbrella or a hat. Consider including a reusable water bottle to help your child stay hydrated all day. 4. Add delicious, fruit-forward snacks for fuel. HI-CHEW™, the immensely fruity, intensely chewy candy, is a satisfying snack that provides a bright explosion of real-fruit flavor. Made with real fruit juices and purees and 100 percent free of cholesterol, artificial colors, nuts and gluten, the candy will spark any kid’s taste buds. Snacks are especially important as the school year calls for students to be alert and energized between schoolwork and play. Top your back-toschool list with HI-CHEW™, available in a variety of formats and flavors for any child’s enjoyment. Each 10-piece stick pack can easily fit in your child’s backpack, lunch-box or pocket, perfect for always having a favorite flavor handy from the first bell to after-school activities. HICHEW™ sticks are available in seven mouthwatering flavors, including Strawberry, Green Apple, Mango, Grape, Banana, Kiwi and Açaí. Each chew provides a burst of vibrant, real-fruit flavor and soft, chewy texture. In addition to 10-piece stick packs, HI-CHEW™ mixed bags are available with individually wrapped pieces for a variety of fruity fun. Perfect to hand out for the whole class to enjoy or to pack in your pocket for a pickme-up, there’s a mix of chews for every child’s flavor preference. The HICHEW™ Original Mix includes classic flavors such as Strawberry, Green Apple, Mango and Grape. There is also a Tropical Mix, which provides a refreshing assortment of exotic flavors, including fan-favorite Mango, Kiwi and Pineapple, perfect for children who want a taste of summer during their school day. No matter which mix you choose, each bag is great for sharing with classmates, celebrating birthdays and as a sweet reward for a job well done. Where to Get It For further facts or to order the tasty treat, go to www.HI-CHEW.com.

Let kids fly solo on school day mornings. New college students have to make many adjustments upon moving into their dorms, and getting themselves out of bed each morning and off to class on time is one such change. Parents worried that their students will sleep in when mom and dad isn’t around to remind them to wake up can start letting kids fly solo on school day mornings during their final year of high school. Let kids set their alarms, prepare their own breakfasts and get out the door on time all on their own. By the time their freshman year of college arrives, kids will know how to handle their mornings by themselves.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) With your Arian charm quotient at an almost all-time high this week, plus all the facts to back you up, you just might win over the last doubters to your proposal. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might be in line for that job change you applied for. But be advised that you could be called on to defend your qualifications against supporters of other applicants. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a new approach to an old idea is one way to get beyond that workplace impasse. No such problems in your personal life, where things continue to flow smoothly. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Be more forthcoming about your feelings concerning a proposed change either in your workplace or in your personal life. Your opinions are valuable. Don’t keep them hidden. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A changing situation in your life needs more patience than you appear to be willing to offer. Allowing it to develop at its own pace is the wisest course you can take at this time. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With more stability in your life -- on both personal and professional levels - this could be a good time to strengthen relationships with both friends and colleagues. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) People have always relied on your integrity not only to get the job done, but to get it done right. So don’t be pressured by anyone into cutting corners to save time. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While others might get rattled over unexpected changes, your ability to adapt calmly and competently helps you make a positive impression during a crucial period. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A changing environment might be daunting for some, but the adventurous Sagittarian takes it all in stride. A friend from the past could awaken some meaningful memories. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) With your self-assurance rising to full strength, the bold Goat should feel confident about opening up to new ventures as well as new relationships. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Reaching out to someone who has been unkind to you might not be easy. But in the long run it will prove to have been the right thing to do. A friend offers moral support. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your keen insight once again helps you work through a seemingly insoluble problem in your workplace. The weekend offers a good chance to develop new relationships. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a knack for finding details that others would overlook. You would make a fine research scientist. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Magic Maze SPRING AHEAD
--DEAR DR. ROACH: With everyone drinking a lot of water during the summer, I noticed that the water depot where I fill up my gallon jugs supplies water in different ranges of alkalinity, from 8-10. This seems to be a new venture for the depot. The owner sells the alkaline water from inside the store and claims the benefit of this water is to neutralize the acidity of the many products we eat daily. He suggests that one might start by taking water with a pH of 8 or stronger, then dilute it to one’s requirements. The purified water involves reverse osmosis so the company reintroduces calcium, magnesium and potassium to bring it up in value. Do you have any comments on alkaline water being consumed during this hot summer season? -- B.A. ANSWER: I recently have seen much confusion about acid and alkaline consumption. By adding a base to water, you raise the pH, making it more alkaline. You can do this at home simply by adding a bit of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to your water -you don’t need to buy alkaline water. Calcium carbonate is a common antacid. Calcium, magnesium and potassium are all elements we need, so in that respect, the alkaline water you are talking about is better than the sodium you would add to water with baking soda. However, the important point is that under normal circumstances your body does not need any help in maintaining pH or in neutralizing acid. The body’s systems are able to maintain pH under almost any dietary condition. Alkaline water is not necessary for health. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 90 years old, physically and mentally in good health. Fourteen years ago, I had a triple bypass, which was very successful. Since then I have had trouble with my blood pressure. The low always runs between 50 and 70, which is fine, but the high side is between 150 and 190, which is not good. My doctor has me on amlodipine and hydrochlorothiazide. Is there any way to lower the high pressure without also lowering the low side? My doctor does not want to increase the dosages because it would keep me tired all the time. -- J.B. ANSWER: High systolic blood pressures in the elderly often are due to very stiff blood vessels. Since you have coronary artery disease, I think it’s likely that you have calcium in your large arteries, which make them unyielding to the degree that the rush of blood from the heart drives the pressure up very high. It may be impossible to lower the pressure without causing symptoms, so I understand your doctor’s concerns and position. When I think about treating blood pressure, I think more about trying to prevent bad outcomes (like stroke and heart attack) than just treating a number. There is good evidence that ACE inhibitors, like ramipril, reduce heart attack risk in people with known risk factors, so I might try a very low dose to see if it helps the blood pressure without making you feel fatigued or lightheaded. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Fairport Music Festival Makes Waves Go Figure!

By: Amanda Dudek This year’s Fairport Music Festival definitely made waves: soundwaves, Canal waves and waves of music fans. Festival attendees came pouring from side streets and parking areas to enjoy the many different types of music played by over thirty bands on three separate stages along Liftbridge Lane East off of Main Street. Music rippled across the Canal and throughout the surrounding streets, filling the air with many different sounds. The festival’s positive vibes reflect its purpose of benefiting the Golisano Children’s Hospital, a successful effort in previous years, raising over $200,000 in 2017. Other not-for-profit participation was also present and encouraged. Great music was joined by great food, as several food trucks lined the streets and stage areas. Fans could get anything from specialty meatballs to bags of popcorn to gourmet grilled cheese from these trucks offering tasty treats. The stage areas were separated from the street and could only be entered by those with blue, fabric wristbands, who had paid for admission. There was no cost, however, for a stroll along Liftbridge Lane while enjoying those food trucks and activities outside of the stage areas, perhaps glancing at the huge screens above the stages and soaking in the music surging from
each stage. Especially enjoyable was the view from the nearby liftbridge, overlooking one of the stages as well as boats in the Canal. In keeping with its focus on children, the Fairport Music Festival did not forget its younger visitors, and several kids’ activities were available from noon until 5:30pm. Offerings included an air brush tattoo artist, a bounce house, Bristol Mt Aerial Adventures, comedy jugglers, face painting, jewelry making, MJ the Balloon Artist, nail painting, rock painting, sand art, tee shirt making and The Magic Guy. Certainly, children were far from bored, to the delight of their music-loving parents. These kid-friendly activities went a long way in making this festival, already a music lover’s paradise, into an event for the entire family. If my future husband insists on sharing the same name, it's his choice to change to Mr. Jane Doe just as it's my choice to keep mine. I'm also disturbed by archaic, sexist terms such as (man and wife). It implies ownership on the part of the husband. As a culture, we've become cognizant of disparaging terminology which only serves to divide the races. Let's use the same political correctness in the words we use to equalize not divide the sexes.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

Your Light the way for safer nighttime driving Routine vehicle maintenance protects drivers on the road while also protecting the often considerable financial investment they make in their cars and trucks. Maintenance guidelines have changed thanks to technology, but drivers must continue to care for their vehicles to ensure the safety of themselves, their passengers and fellow motorists. From the time they first get behind the wheel, many drivers recognize the need to periodically change their oil and have their tires rotated. But few drivers may understand the importance of maintaining their vehicles’ headlights, and just how compromised they and their passengers might be when driving with old, dimming or foggy headlamps. Burned out lights greatly diminish driver visibility and may even draw the attention of law enforcement. But headlight bulbs don’t just burn out overnight. As bulbs age, their light output gradually reduces due to use and factors such as humidity, electrical resistance and filament fatigue. Drivers concerned about the efficacy of their headlight bulbs can take steps to improve their visibility when driving at night. • Accept your own vulnerability. The human eye is not adapted for nocturnal vision. As a result, drivers’ visual acuity may be reduced by as much as 70 percent when driving at night. Cloudy, dim headlights only exacerbate that problem, further compromising the safety of everyone on the road. Avoid aggressive driving and always obey the speed limits, even when it’s late at night and roads are empty. • Learn to recognize headlamp clouding. According to the automotive lighting innovator Lumileds, sunlight, ozone, road pollution, and even chemicals used in car washes can contribute to headlamp clouding. Clouded headlamps often appear hazed and yellow and reduce headlight output considerably. Routine headlamp inspection can help drivers discover clouded lamps that can greatly compromise nighttime visibility. • Restore clouded headlamps. Clouded headlamps do not necessarily need to be replaced. The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit can help drivers restore their clouded headlamp lenses. The kit employs a protective UV coating that effectively restores yellow, hazy lenses that

have been compromised by years of exposure to the elements. • Replace headlamps that are past their prime. While not all clouded headlamps need to be replaced, some aging or outdated bulbs are best replaced with new models designed to produce substantially more light output. Drivers whose vehicles are equipped with standard halogen headlights may be surprised to learn that such lights typically begin to break down within two to three years of installation, during which time light output might be reduced by as much as 30 percent. Compared to standard halogen bulbs, Philips X-tremeVision Bulbs can put substantially more light on the road while producing longer beam patterns that make it easier for drivers to see more of what’s ahead of them at night. Drivers’ visibility is dramatically reduced once the sun goes down, but maintaining headlamps can help drivers combat that loss of vision. More information about headlamp maintenance and the alternatives to traditional halogen headlights is available at www.philips.com/automotive.

Looking for a Service Technician GET ORGANIZED AND IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished. Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity. Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once. Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed. Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week. Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks. Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.
