While cats are thought by many to be aloof and less feeling than dogs, science says otherwise. According to the book “What Cats Are Made Of,” by Hanoch Piven, a cat’s brain is biologically more similar to a human brain than it is to a dog’s. Both humans and cats have identical regions in their brains that are responsible for emotions.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

Exercising outdoors in w inter can be exhilarating, but athletes must prioritize staying w arm and safe for the duration of their w orkouts.

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

DELIVERING UNWELCOME NEWS No one is more aware of the shock and grief that comes with hearing of the death of a loved one than those who must deliver the news. The person on whom this responsibility falls may want to create a list and divide it with someone else of equal standing in the family. In any case, it may be a good idea to have someone else present when making the calls. Consideration should also be given to the fact that, as difficult as it is to disseminate such news, it may be more traumatic to receive it. With this in mind, it may be preferable to deliver the news in person when circumstances allow. The funeral director can offer guidance. It is our mission to provide support and guidance in recognizing a life well-lived and to assist our community in celebrating the memories of their loved ones. In doing this, we will care for each family with respect and dignity, as if they were our own. A funeral service can mark the significance of the life that was lived. To learn more, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Our Livonia and Honeoye, NY, facilities provide a spacious and comfortable atmosphere to share memories of your loved ones. QUOTE: “That it will never come again is what makes life so sweet.” ~ Emily Dickinson

“A man can stand a lot as long as he can stand himself.....”

~ Axel Munthe Into every life some rain must fall. We all suffer adversities of various kinds. We can meet these misfortunes with courage and fortitude or we can grovel in self-pity and try to find an easy way out, even if it means dodging our responsibilities. Mere adversity never killed anyone. We live through it and usually, when the problem is finally resolved, it turns out to have been less awful than we imagined. We can stand a great deal if we are proud of the way we do it. Families of all faiths are assured of perfectly appropriate services when they place their trust in us. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds. When the need arises, call us first.

Caledonia is #BeachStrong By Amanda Dudek

ctober 2018 was just the end of another year for 33-year-old Greece Police Sergeant Chris Beach. Beach, who served as the Caledonia Fire Department Fire Chief for 3 years from 2012 to 2015, is also very involved in his local farming community. When he’s not working in Greece, he works for Paul Stein & Sons Farm in Caledonia. During the planting and harvest seasons he can usually be found riding around the fields on a tractor or driving truck from the field to the bunk and back. A family man, Beach lives with his wife, Alyssa, 4-year-old son Owen and 2-year-old daughter Kelsie in Caledonia. They are expecting their 3rd child this May. For the Beach family, however, things were about to take an unexpected turn. By December 2018, Chris had been working for two months to figure out the cause of a rash that appeared over a small part of one of his legs. During October and November, he had seen his PCP several times but was unfortunately unable to find any cause for the rash or relief from it. With the rash spreading to cover both legs, he gave in to his wife’s request, and on December 11th, he called to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist. The receptionist informed him that new patients must typically book their initial appointment 10 weeks out; however, she just had a cancellation and had an appointment available for 8:30 the next morning. It was his if he could make it. He took it. The dermatologist took a biopsy of the rash and ordered blood work done that same day. On December 13th, just two days later and the day Former Caledonia Fire Chief, Greece after his 33rd birthday, Chris Police Sergeant Chris Beach Beach received a phone call from his doctor as he was preparing to leave home and head into work. His doctor told him his blood work had come back, and something was not right. He needed to get to Strong Hospital’s Emergency Room right away. He did. That night, after more blood work, Beach was diagnosed with Leukemia and was told he would be admitted to the hospital for at least the next 30 days. Later that evening, Beach made his way to the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester. On the morning of December 14th, the very next day, Chris Beach had his first bone marrow biopsy completed to determine which type of Leukemia he had and the course of treatment he would need. By 3:00pm, the Beach family received Chris’ diagnosis: he had Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). At 7pm, after several tests and with a heart healthy enough to withstand treatment, Chris Beach began his first round of chemotherapy. A heavy hitter, this treatment consists of 7 days of 24-hour IV chemotherapy medication. Once completed, Beach faced 7 days of no chemotherapy followed by a second bone marrow biopsy the results of which determine the effectiveness of the chemotherapy and the next steps in his treatment.

The Caledonia community wasn’t about to let Chris Beach and his family go through this alone. Local businesses around Caledonia put donation jars on their counters for Chris. At the local redemption center, people can return their bottles and request refunds go to

Caledonia Fire Department Supports Chris Beach support Chris and his fight. Friends, family, neighbors and coworkers alike filmed a video of supportive messages for Chris Beach which quickly spread across Facebook, and Caledonia Fire Department and Greece Police Department are working together to plan a fundraiser to take place at the end of January. They are currently selling T-Shirts, sweatshirts and bracelets that say BeachStrong on them, as well. Says family friend and current Caledonia Fire Chief Jeff Ayers, “The amount of phone calls, texts, emails, and Facebook messages that I have received from people asking how they can help is totally incredible! Firefighters and Cops know how strong brotherhood is and how no one fights alone, but to see an entire community-and then some-come together for support is absolutely jaw dropping. I know Chris and his entire family are grateful for all the support and everything else they have received. I couldn’t be prouder to be their [Caledonia’s] Fire Chief and help serve this great community.” On Friday, December 28th, the results from Chris Beach’s 2nd bone marrow biopsy showed that his cancerous cells are gone. The chemotherapy appears to have done its job! Fire Chief Ayers adds, “Chris is a fighter and always gives 110% effort to what he’s doing, and this shows it. He has a goal to be back to work by the end of July, and doctors don’t see any reason to why that shouldn’t happen! Right now, we continue to hope for good news.” With the results from his latest biopsy coming back clean, Chris was able to return home on Saturday night, January 5th. He still must go in for chemotherapy appointments and more scans, but at least he’s able to stay home and hopefully return to a little bit of normalcy. In honor of Chris Beach and to support his fight, a bone marrow registry drive will be held on Tuesday, January 22nd from 5-8pm at Jones Hall in Caledonia. Standing together, the Caledonia community and all who join them in support of Chris Beach will continue to be #BeachStrong.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can promote healthier bones. Because they’re high in vitamin K, a nutrient that is crucial for bone health, avocados may help reduce a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by bones becoming fragile and brittle due to loss of tissue. Vitamin K may help improve the intestinal absorption of calcium. That’s a significant benefit, as calcium deficiency has long been associated with a greater risk for osteoporosis.

A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling. • A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute, roughly 10 percent of all highway deaths involve large trucks. Braking capability can play a role in such deaths, as the IIHS notes that loaded tractortrailers take between 20 and 40 percent farther than cars to fully stop. That discrepancy is even greater on poorly maintained roads or roads marked by adverse conditions such as ice, rain and/ or snow. While 16 percent of the roughly 3,600 people who died in large truck crashes in the United States in 2014 were truck occupants, more than four times that many people (68 percent) were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles. That’s because large trucks typically weigh 20 to 30 times more than passenger vehicles, meaning occupants in cars and passenger trucks are incredibly susceptible to serious injury or death should they get in accidents with tractor-trailers and other large trucks. Time of day also must be considered when examining large truck crashes and fatalities. While 17 percent of deaths in 2014 took place between the hours of noon and 3 p.m., that figure dropped to 11 percent between the typical rush hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Sprains and strains: Sprains are injuries to ligaments, or the bands of tough, fibrous tissue that connect two or more bones at a joint. Strains impact a muscle or a tendon, which connects muscles to bones. Clinical research has linked acute strains and sprains to improper warm-up before sports, fatigue and previous injuries. Preparticipation conditioning and stretching can help reduce the risk of injury.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

INFLAMMATION

Family Dental welcomes Dr. Lenny Santos to our practice! 4384 Lakeville Rd., Geneseo Most insurances accepted. Dr. Dan Doaga

Dr. Lenny Santos

Remember Dr. Doaga will see Dr. Washburn’s patients at our office.

Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Is There Such a Thing as a Weather Allergy? --DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible to be allergic to the cold weather and temperature changes? My son is 23 years old, and when he goes out in the cold, he breaks out in hives. What can he do? -- K.R. ANSWER: This sounds exactly like cold urticaria, which isn’t an allergy, but is similar in some ways. Doctors may test this by placing an ice cube (in a plastic bag with water) on the skin (usually the forearm) for five minutes, then watch the skin as it rewarms. If a hive develops (with raised skin and redness), that confirms the diagnosis. Cold urticaria can be associated with some infections (Lyme disease, hepatitis and HIV, among others) and with celiac disease. People with cold urticaria need to worry about systemic reactions. Avoiding cold (especially swimming in cold water) is critical, but even cold beverages can cause a serious systemic reaction, including swelling of the mouth and throat. Even anaphylaxis, a life-threatening collapse of the circulatory system, can develop. Many people with severe cold urticaria carry an epinephrine auto-injector in case of emergency. Antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec), are the best pharmacologic treatment. Experts in cold urticaria include allergists and dermatologists.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I saw a new physician for the first time two years ago. As he had no EKG machine, he sent me over to the local hospital for an EKG (just for his records, I wasn’t having problems). I had the EKG. The tech said that I was in atrial fib and needed to be admitted, as blood clots could form. I disagreed and went home. The doctor called me and persuaded me to go back to the hospital, which I did. I was preparing to be admitted when a cardiologist came in and said: “She doesn’t need admitting; she is not in atrial fib, it’s just PVCs.” I found out later that the EKG machine spit out the interpretation; no cardiologist had read it. I did complain, of course, and received an apology letter from the hospital. They also stated that they would change this procedure. Do hospitals actually rely on machines to do cardiology interpretations? And then go along with the machine’s interpretation without a cardiologist looking at the EKG? Please tell me it isn’t so. -- M.K. ANSWER: It isn’t so, or at least it shouldn’t be. There are several errors here. The first is that the EKG machine made the wrong interpretation. The machines are pretty good most of the time, but there are times when it is very difficult to tell and the machine is wrong. The second error was that the technician told you rather than getting the results confirmed by a human being who could correctly interpret them. I give the technician credit for trying to act in the patient’s interest, but you should be sure of your facts before telling the patient. It’s the third error – that of the doctor who called you – that upsets me the most, since the doctor was also wrong before calling you. I would be especially angry if the doctor had relied on the machine or the technician and hadn’t checked the EKG personally. It is good you wrote to complain: Hospitals rely on feedback to change the system. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES According to Allergy & Asthma Care of New York, allergies and other sinus issues can cause puffiness and dark eye circles. Histamines, which are released when an allergen is present, can cause blood vessels to swell and inflame. Getting tested for seasonal allergies can help people identify some possible triggers. Alleviating allergy symptoms can reduce the appearance of dark circles in some cases.

Long-Distance Caregiving (NAPS)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. W h e n providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their long-distance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

TOP TIPS FOR BUYING SAFE TOYS by Joan Lawrence (NAPSI)—For happier holidays with your family, here are answers to parents’ most frequently asked questions about toy safety: Q. How do I pick out safe toys? A. Choose a toy that matches your child’s age and interests. Always follow the age grading on toy packaging and be sure to keep toys labeled 3+ away from children under 3. These toys may contain small parts, which are a choking hazard. Q. Are certain toy brands safer than others? A. All toys sold in the U.S. must comply with strict federal safety standards. So when you shop at a reputable retailer, you can feel confident that the toys sold in the establishment are safe. Q. Is it safe to buy a toy from a seller I’m not familiar with? A. Whether online or in person, shop only at retailers you know and trust. Store staff at established businesses will be knowledgeable about the toys on their shelves and websites. Exercise caution when buying toys at flea markets, garage sales and unknown online sellers, as these vendors may not be monitoring for recalled products. Q. How do I find out if a toy has been recalled? A. Only 0.003 percent of the 3 billion toys sold each year are recalled. Stay informed by visiting PlaySafe.org for a current list of recalled products.

Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.
