Research important when choosing a charity Were you nominated to do the ice bucket challenge during the summer of 2014? This fundraiser for ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, swept social media, spurring the participation of private citizens, celebrities and even world leaders. But the challenge also managed to raise awareness and funds to go toward ALS research. While the ice bucket challenge and similar social media phenomenons are spawned by good intentions, some people feel they pressure participants to donate money. Peer pressure should not be why a person donates to charity. When considering a charitable donation, it might be wise to take the following approach before donating your time and/or money. · Clarify your motives. Ask yourself why you want to donate? Perhaps you want to pitch in to help do your part in the fight against a societal ill such as homelessness? Or maybe you’re motivated to help after witnessing the aftereffects of a natural disaster? There are many worthy causes out there in need of support, so clarify your motives before donating to be sure you and the organization you ultimately choose to work with or donate to are the right fit. · Do your research. Verify where your money will be going once your donation is made. Do not hesitate to ask a charity to provide a rundown of where donations go so you can see how funds are allocated. This can help you determine if a charity is worth your efforts. · Select sustainable charities. You want a nonprofit that can sustain itself. Nonprofits that show a budget deficit for a few years in a row may not be sustainable or capable of fulfilling their mission statements.

· Make sure the charity is legitimate. Part of the problem of peer-pressure-induced donations is they may not give you time to research a charity. Links posted to social media do not guarantee an organization is legitimate. Many dummy organizations that appear exactly the same as legitimate organizations are set up to prey on thoughtful, well-intentioned prospective donors. The United States Internal Revenue Service maintains a list of all organizations registered as charities at www.irs.gov. · Try volunteering first. Volunteer with a particular organization to get a better feel for its efforts before making any donations. Hands-on research can illustrate how a nonprofit manages funds, treats workers and accomplishes its mission. Peer pressure to donate to a particular charity may result in impressive fundraising, but it is not always the best way to select a charity. Take your time to research several organizations before choosing who to work with.

Police in our Community at Avon Elementary School Recently the Avon Elementary School was fortunate enough to experience a special presentation, Police in Our Community: Keeping Us Safe. The assembly for students familiarized them with the many roles police personnel play in the community and provided an opportunity for the children to see the officers in their various uniforms. Participating were officers from the Avon Police Department, Livingston County Sheriff’s Department and New York State along with the School Resource Officer, the mounted patrol, a K-9 unit officer, SWAT member, investigator, marine patrol, State Police, and the DEC. Thank you to fourth grade teacher Tara Schneider for arranging the program for students as the leader of the school’s PBIS Team, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Team. The PBIS Team is comprised of staff members and parents at Avon Primary School. Also known as “The Braves Team,” the team organizes the staff and students to create a social culture in school that will

encourage positive behavior and interactions, while discouraging problem behaviors among students. The goal is to create a culture in the school that will lead to a safer environment where children can build their self-esteem, develop positive relationships with each other and adults, as well as improve their social and academic abilities. The Avon Elementary School is celebrating gratitude this month with students and the event provided the perfect opportunity to say thank you to the officers who help keep our community safe.

The ladies auxiliary once again thanks everyone for their support during Caledonia’s hometown holidays for our bake sale and lottery tree fundraiser. This year’s winners were Cheryl Kooy and Dick Mancuso. Have a great new year and stay safe.

Epiphany and Avon Wesleyan. We have been doing this project for over 20 years, and it is most appreciated by the nursing homes. I just want to wish a Happy New Year to all! Donna Hoppe, Avon CPC Office Manager

Thank you to the parents and students of Attica bus 111. Thank you for all the gift cards and gifts and notes for Christmas. I appreciate them all very much! The chocolate covered pretzels and the M&M cookies were delicious. Thank you!

To the gentlemen who solved the total gridlock at the Victor Commerce Dr. Mall (Walmart/Kohl’s) on the afternoon of Dec. 23. I had been caught in total traffic gridlock in the parking lot for over 21⁄2 hours when I saw him walking along the road heading to the interior intersection to start directing traffic. Hundreds of cars finally started to move along thanks to this kind man who wasn’t even wearing an overcoat. Your efforts finally let us get on our way home.

I just wanted to say “thank you” to the seven churches in Avon that participated in the Holiday Stocking Bag project for the Avon Nursing Home and the nursing/rehab facility in Mt Morris. Churches included: Avon Central Presbyterian, E. Avon 1st Presbyterian, St. Agnes, Avon United Methodist, Zion Episcopal, Lutheran Church of the

I would like to thank the two people who turned around and then stopped to try and help me out of my driveway. My driveway had at least 2 feet of snow from the plows and my car was too low to get through. They both tried to push and then scraped the snow with their boots to get me out. It eventually worked and I did get out. It just goes to show that there are still “good people” in this world. Thank you again!

I’m a cyclist who resents that a previous writer painted all cyclists with the same brush. Of course there are careless cyclists, just as there are careless motorists and pedestrians. I cycle to work and to go shopping, as well as for recreation. I make it a point to obey the rules of the road and the trails, since it is my right as a traffic participant to use them. I wear a helmet and bright colors so I can be seen, I have lights on my bike and I always acknowledge the kindness of motorists with a thank you and a wave. On trails, I never fail to announce to a walker that I am passing. I wonder how many walkers don’t hear me because they have headphones on? It’s disappointing when someone makes broad generalizations that unjustly put us all in a bad light. One size does NOT fit all! It’s truly sad that YOUR life is more important than everyone else while you are driving a vehicle. It seems that distracted driving is getting worse rather than better. Do

you honestly think when you are observed looking down constantly, weaving, can’t maintain speed, crossing the center line, holding up traffic at a green light, and that stupid leaning over with your left hand holding the steering wheel and your head is barely visible. Is it really going to take multiple fatalities for the point to be taken seriously? Maybe a financially crippling fine AND a revocation of your license will make a statement. You can’t put a price on another human being’s life. It’s pretty darn simple, PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY, SIT UP STRAIGHT, FOLLOW THE SIMPLE RULES OF THE ROAD, AND DRIVE. I don’t care who you voted for (oh, yes, I do) but please, please, get rid of the election signs. Thanks! I hike at least weekly in a local county park. There are certain trails with clear markings indicating certain trails are NOT for horses. These trails can be very narrow and have a steep drop off to the creek. Nonetheless, some horse owners still take their horses on them, as indicated by the large piles of horse dung. Please, for the safety of your horse, and my sneakers, stay off the trails marked no horses!!!

* Pick the fastest security agent. If you are a pro at picking the fastest checkout line at the grocery store, now is the time to use your skills. Sometimes it isn’t about the shortest line, but the most efficient agent. * Don’t push the 3-1-1 rule. Peanut butter, jam, gravy and cranberry sauce won’t make it through security even if they are your lunch for the day. Treat these items just as you would lotions, toothpaste and other liquids and gels. * Keep gifts unwrapped. No one wants to have their Christmas presents greedily torn apart by TSA officers, but if they need too, they will. Wrap your gifts after you’ve flown. * Be a neat packer. Carefully packed suitcases are frequently easier to scan with the X-ray machine. If TSA agents do need to open your bag, you will be saved the embarrassment of your suitcase’s contents exploding all over the airport. * Organize carry-ons. Once you get to the X-ray machine, it’s best if you are ready to go. Stow your laptop in an easy-to-reach space and have your 3-1-1 bag ready. A few moments of planning beforehand can save you hold-ups and stress while you’re in line.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD

* Plan a sensible outfit. Your airport outfit might have to be a little boring in order to speed through security. You don’t want to have to take off jewelry, belts, scarves, coats and lace-up boots, so today is the day to wear slip on shoes and a simple, one-layer outfit with no accessories.

Expect setbacks. If realizing resolutions was easy, the success rate would be greater than 8 percent. Setbacks are inevitable, so don’t allow them to derail your efforts. Even if setbacks occur when you’re well on your way to success, regroup and get back on track without getting down on yourself.

* Have your documents ready. Get out your drivers’ license, passport and boarding pass before you reach the agent. This keeps you from having to root around in your pockets and bags while you make others wait.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I know you’re not a psychiatrist, but I hope you can help. My dad was a single parent raising us kids, and he was always clean when it came to housework. Every room in our house was almost spotless. But lately, we have noticed him becoming a hoarder and being more disorganized. By that, I mean keeping weeks-old newspapers on the floor, the kitchen table, everywhere, and he gets upset if we try to help him clean. He’s 79. Could it be a sign of senility or Alzheimer’s disease? -- R.S. ANSWER: Hoarding behavior can have several psychiatric causes, and, indeed, a psychiatrist may be necessary to make the diagnosis. However, odds are that your dad always had some form of obsessive-compulsive disorder, and with age has become worse. There are other possibilities. Fronto-temporal dementia, a type of dementia that is distinct from Alzheimer’s disease, has a variant in which personality and behavior changes are prominent, but given the history of what sounds like unusual cleanliness habits, I would suspect that OCD is the most likely diagnosis. There usually is a long delay from the time symptoms begin until the time the diagnosis is made. A diagnosis needs to be made before treatment -- be it medications, psychotherapy or some combination -- can begin. Treatment can improve not only the hoarding behavior, but also the distress your dad is feeling. A psychiatrist or psychologist is the expert in making the diagnosis and for treatment. The new booklet on Alzheimer’s disease gives a detailed presentation of this common illness. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 903W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In discussing treatment of nail fungus, you did not mention newer laser treatments that I see advertised by podiatrists in my area. Are they effective? -- J.F. ANSWER: We don’t really know if they are effective, since welldone studies haven’t yet proven it; however, preliminary evidence is suggestive. This would be a great addition to treatment, since the only currently accepted highly effective treatments are oral medications, which have risk of liver damage. Even more exciting is the idea of combining a topical antifungal agent, amorolfine, with laser. This medication is not available in the U.S., but a study in Korea showed a 50 percent effectiveness rate (which is pretty good for this difficult-to-treat condition). Since I last wrote about this condition, I heard from a lot of readers. Some mentioned cures from Vicks Vapo-Rub, but the only study I found on that showed a 22 percent cure rate. One person asked about surgery, but since the fungus gets into the nail bed, the infection often recurs after removing the nail. Listerine and white vinegar mixed half and half cured one couple, and several people had success with Dr. Paul’s Piggy Paste, which also is vinegar-based. None of these has good data to support its use, but all likely are safe. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Plant a tree. Trees have long symbolized life and wisdom. Trees can live for dozens of years, growing larger and more vibrant with each year that passes. Planting a tree in a loved one’s name will create a beautiful respite that people can visit and enjoy. A small plaque or another type of sign can feature the name of the person being memorialized.

Friends called on Saturday, January 14th, from 1-5pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia. A graveside service will be held in the spring at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Mt. Morris, NY with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, P.O. Box 368, Pittsford, NY 14534.

Than k You ! Our thanks go out to The Livonia Presbyterian Church, Dougherty Funeral Home and all our family and friends who sent cards, food and flowers along with The Robbin’s Nest for the beautiful flower arrangements at the time of the loss of our wife, mother and grandmother,

Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

Into every life some rain must fall. We all suffer adversities of various kinds. We can meet these misfortunes with courage and fortitude or we can grovel in self-pity and try to find an easy way out, even if it means dodging our responsibilities. Mere adversity never killed anyone. We live through it and usually, when the problem is finally resolved, it turns out to have been less awful than we imagined. We can stand a great deal if we are proud of the way we do it. Families of all faiths are assured of perfectly appropriate services when they place their trust in us. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds. When the need arises, call us first.

Lilies The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.

SURVIVING THE DEATH OF A SPOUSE When death takes their husbands, many surviving widows are surprised that they can find the strength to carry on. In fact, many recently widowed women told researchers that they felt stronger and more confident after their losses. While they may have expected their lives to fall apart, they found themselves able to manage hurdles that they probably thought they could never have managed alone. Researchers found that widowed women, in general, were more likely than widowers to say that they found themselves more capable after their spouses’ deaths, and that they were stronger as a result of their experiences. These inspiring accounts show that people do find the strength to move on after the death of a spouse. Going forward after the death of a spouse may seem impossible. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME is here to support your efforts as you grieve. We are here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (585) 346-5401. Please visit our tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. We have been serving our communities with pride for many years. IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY A long workday can be both mentally and physically draining. As a result, office workers and professionals whose jobs are more physically demanding than office work may find themselves less alert at the end of the workday than at the beginning. A loss of alertness as the workday draws to a close might be unavoidable.
