70th Anniversary Series- Volume 4 Many people have asked about our Penny Saver logo, including the white horse.

“Penny Saver” is a generic term.

There are many Penny Savers (also sometimes called Shoppers) across the country, no one has a copyright on the name.

But to set themselves apart each Penny Saver can identify with their own individual name, for example: Mt. Morris Shopper, or Warsaw Penny Saver. In the late 60’s we worked with an ad agency which produced and sold us our horse logo as you know it today. With our input of course, it was decided that the white horse was appropriate and “Genesee Valley” truly identified the area that we served at the time. We are proud that it has become so well known and such a prominent symbol in our circulation area.

In the early 1980’s it was obvious our growth in advertisers and readers would require yet another move to a larger location to accommodate the increase in our employee count and the need for improvements in our press and collating production.

In 1982, Steve and his Mom found a printing press that would fit our production needs. It was a German made Royal Zenith Zephyr 300. One problem – it wouldn’t fit in our current production space. Now, we were on the move again.

We doubled our space from 4000 to 8000 square feet with our move to the Avon Plaza on East Main Street. This move did not come without some problems. The plaza was zoned for commercial use and our business was considered light industrial. The town and village boards were initially against the move, but in the end they decided they wanted to keep our business in Avon and not lose us to another town. So we made the move with the blessings of the Town fathers!

Our plaza location was one big, empty space so before we moved we had to plan and construct walls and do plumbing and electrical to suit our needs. Printing presses weigh many tons, and in order to get perfect, readable print, they must be perfectly level. Just readying the cement floor and placing the press is a major feat. At this time we also installed a new, bigger Muller-Martini collating machine which put the sections of the Penny Saver together. One of our first issues after our move was put together on this collating wonder!

We were so excited, but our excitement soon turned to an entire night of work as papers flew around the room, papers kept jamming and all kinds of things went wrong. Besides our regular collating crew, it took Jane, Kim, Steve, and many of our office crew all night to get that issue to the Post Office on time. Needless to say the Muller-Martini “troubleshooters” were there quickly and the next week’s issue went much smoother.

By this time, Steve and Kim were taking on more of a management position – Steve was making decisions on circulation, suppliers and the many parts that go in to operating a business. He also worked in advertising sales both as a sales representative and head of that department.

Basically Steve acquired the knowledge of all the “moving parts” from sales to production and the entire process of publishing a weekly shopping guide. Kim, along with still designing and creating ads, learned the camera and developing part of production as well as taking on many office duties such as weekly payroll. As you can imagine, payroll was a labor-intensive process done by hand each week. Thankfully we were eventually relieved of this burden with the introduction of payroll processing companies! As

time went on many new processes and applications helped streamline much of the office and HR component. Jane was dedicated to growing the business and although she held a tight rein, she knew if the company was to stay in the family it was necessary to pass on her business knowledge and skills to her children. Jane was a tough boss in some ways, but she always had a soft spot for employees with families. A sick child at home would warrant the mom or dad to stay at home, no questions asked! Being a weekly deadline business this would sometimes throw a kink in our production schedule, but we always made it work.

One of the great improvements with our new press is that we could now print color! One color each week – it’s called “spot color”. We would select the color keeping in mind holidays and seasons of the year or special events.

Green and red at holiday time, oranges and browns through the fall, pinks, greens and yellows during the spring and summer, and of course red for Valentine’s Day! We loved our German made press, but one problem, if we needed service, we had to wait for help from their office in New York City. We had books of instructions but they were all printed in German. One day the press broke down, and our pressmen knew it was a fairly minor problem but they couldn’t read the instructions to fix it. Fortunately, Kim and Jerry and their family were hosting Alex Wortberg, a Rotary Exchange student from Dortmund Germany. What luck. Alex pulled up a stool near the press and read the instructions to our pressmen and the problem was solved!

During this time, Jerry Rolison, owner and publisher of the Mt, Morris Shopper, approached Steve and asked if the Genesee Valley Penny Saver would become part of a group of papers known as the “4-County” Papers. These papers: Mt. Morris Shopper, Perry Shopper, Warsaw Penny Saver and Dansville Penny Saver had sales agreements between them which allowed for each of the individual papers to “sell into” the other papers, thereby increasing their own weekly advertisers, and giving advertisers greater circulation. We joined the 4-County group and an added benefit for us was that they asked us to print their papers each week for them. We were able to work these printings into our own GVPS schedule. Eventually, the Dansville Penny Saver pulled out of the group and we began our Dansville edition of the GVPS. At this point we had also begun a Batavia edition so naturally, our circulation as well as our staff continued to grow.

Another part of our business was doing print jobs – such as tickets, stationery and other small jobs on a small press.

We were also approached by the purchasing agent for RIT about printing their course booklets, or catalogs for the students. He had noticed our magazine format and saddle stitched Penny Savers and thought this would be easier for the students rather than the newspaper format they were using. A long time relationship was formed with RIT and eventually the U of R, St. John Fisher, Nazareth, MCC and Hobart-William Smith colleges came aboard … we had a full schedule, and , we knew again…. not enough space!!

According to the National Caregivers Library, POA is granted to an “attorney-in-fact” or “agent” to give a person the legal authority to make decisions for an incapacitated “principal.” The laws for creating a power of attorney vary depending on where a person lives, but there are some general similarities regardless of geography.

Why is power of attorney needed? Many people believe their families will be able to step in if an event occurs that leaves them incapacitated and unable to make decisions for themselves.

Unfortunately, this is not always true. If a person is not named as an agent or granted legal access to financial, medical and other pertinent information, family members’ hands may be tied. In addition, the government may appoint someone to make certain decisions for an individual if no POA is named.

Just about everyone can benefit from establishing an attorney-infact. Doing so does not mean men and women cannot live independently, but it will remove the legal barriers involved should a person no longer be physically or mentally capable of managing certain tasks.

Power of attorney varies Power of attorney is a broad term that covers various aspects of decision-making. According to the legal resource ‘Lectric Law Library, the main types of POA include general power of attorney, health care power of attorney, durable power of attorney, and special power of attorney. Many of the responsibilities overlap, but there are some subtle legal differences.

Durable power of attorney, for example, relates to all the appointments involved in general, special and health care powers of attorney being made “durable.” This means the document will

What is covered? An agent appointed through POA may be able to handle the following, or more, depending on the verbiage of the document: • banking transactions • buying/selling property • settling claims • filing tax returns • managing government-supplied benefits • maintaining business interests • making estate-planning decisions • deciding on medical treatments • selling personal property • fulfilling advanced health care directives Although a power of attorney document can be filled out and an agent appointed on one’s own, working with an estate planning attorney to better understand the intricacies of this vital document is advised.

Churchville-Chili High School Concert Choir to perform at NYSSMA Winter Conference

The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) has invited the Churchville-Chili Concert Choir to perform for its 82nd annual Winter Conference on Dec. 2, 2017. The concert will be held at the Rochester Convention Center at 9:30 a.m. and is free and open to the public.

Attendees will be treated to the premier of an original musical composition created for the choir by promising young composer Nathan Jones.

Churchville-Chili senior Gabe Algarin will also be performing with the All-State Mixed Chorus, directed by David Fryling from Hofstra University on December 3.

“Being invited to perform a composition expressly written for our voices at such a prestigious conference is an honor,” said senior Shelby Ennis, a choir officer for the group. “It was incredibly generous of our Music Boosters organization to fund the commission.”

“We’re all very excited,” said choir vice president and senior Jaylah Wilson. “We’ll perform a repertoire of pieces that highlight the diversity of our group-from Mozart and ballads to a Cuban folk song.”

“The wonderful thing about opportunities like this is that we get to stretch and expand our experience,” said junior Christopher Bunk. “Mr. Reinhart always encourages us to challenge ourselves, attend workshops and explore all the possibilities.”

“This is a huge privilege for our choir and a credit to our school,” said Director Erik Reinhart.

“Very few groups have been selected for inclusion in the conference concert program. This is a chance for our 52 exceptional vocalists to shine in front of an audience of hundreds of music educators from across the state.”

This is just the second time Churchville-Chili High School musicians have been featured at the conference: Last year, the Wind Ensemble, directed by Kevin Mead, was selected to perform.

The performance marks the beginning to what promises to be an exciting year for Concert Choir.

In addition to the original composition, called “I Am Here…” which was based on a poem written

by Reinhart, its composer will bring a special master class to the school in November.

It is also the first year that the district has purchased formal black dresses and tuxedos for Concert Choir. “This support from our school means so much to us,” said junior Jenna Guyette.

“The formal concert attire unites us. It enhances our stage presence and changes our view of ourselves. We are no longer amateurs; we are skilled, talented professionals, working together and sharing our music with audiences.”

Several of the choir’s concerts from last year were professionally recorded, and they plan to record additional performances this year. The collected recordings will be released on CD in the spring of 2018.

Cut avocado lengthwise around the pit, and twist halves to separate. Strike pit with a knife blade, and pull to remove. Scoop out flesh with a spoon, and place in a blender. October 17, 2017 Hemlock: Peacefully at home on October 17, 2017 at age 76 years. Survived by his wife 51 years Donna Kingsley and son Daryl Kingsley of Penfield.

Gary was born on February 3, 1941 in Norfolk, NY to parents Floyd and Maude (Oakes) Kingsley. Gary graduated from Norwood High School in 1959. He served his country in the US Army from 1959-1965 and later went to work for Rochester Telephone Co., from which he retired. He married Donna in 1966 in Buffalo, NY. Gary and Donna moved to Old Bald Hill Road North in 1973 and later he built his own home. It was one of the first log homes in the area. He was known for rescuing hummingbirds and feeding squirrels on their bungee cords.

At Gary’s request no funeral services will be held. In Gary’s memory memorial contributions may be made to SusieQ Dog ResQ, PO Box 236, Conesus, NY 14435.

Samuel Parry DeMay October 9, 2017 Geneseo/Rochester: Formerly of Howard, NY, a resident of Lake Demmon for many years. Sam was born on 11/3/1923 and passed peacefully on 10/9/2017 at age 93. Predeceased by his parents Clarence & Ruth DeMay, his sister Joy Kyper, and his son-in-law Gerry Giehl.

Survived by his wife of 43 years Marge (Neener) DeMay and his children; Elizabeth Wemple and Gary DeMay; step-children, Patrick (MaryEllen) Quinlan, Daniel Quinlan, Barbara Giehl, John (Kathy) Quinlan, Michael (Linda) Quinlan and Terence (Gina) Quinlan. 25 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and many nieces & nephews.

Sam was the past owner of the 3rd generation Samuel R. Parry Machine Company of Rochester, NY until his retirement in 1993. He was a long time member of the Rochester Ad Club, the National Paper Box Association, and the Avon American Legion. Sam proudly served in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean War. Friends called on Thursday, October 12th, from 5-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Livonia, NY. A Graveside service was held on Friday, October 13th, 1pm at Bath National Cemetery, Bath, NY with military honors. Carolyn Emery Allen October 14, 2017 Lakeville: Carolyn Emery Allen, age 97, of Lakeville, passed away October 14th in San Antonio, Texas, where she spent much of her recent years to be near to children and grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Floyd Allen, brother Robert Emery and sister Kathryn Ramsey.

She is survived by her children, Thomas, Lisa, and Laurie Allen, all of San Antonio, Texas; Earl (Inge) Allen of Cornville, Arizona, Faye Reamore of Leroy, and her exchange student daughter Martha (Alberto) Leal de Guizar of Mexico City, Mexico; sister Ruth Sidorowicz of Las Vegas, Nevada, and brothers Richard (Roma) Emery of Morrisville, North Carolina and James (Sandi) Emery of Summerville, South Carolina; 8 grandchildren, Novella, Nol, Christofer, Travis, Joel, Tim, Kelly, and Kurt; over 20 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Born in Rochester, New York July 22, 1920, Carolyn was valedictorian of the Livonia High School class of 1937, attended the Mildred Elley Business School in Albany, and worked for the Webster’s Crossing and Lakeville milk processing plants, Stone Construction, the Morris Sweeney Insurance Agency, and retired from civil service at the State University at Geneseo. She married and raised 5 children, was the eldest member of her beloved Lakeville United Church of Christ, and traveled extensively in her retirement.

Calling hours will be from 4pm to 7pm Friday, October 27th at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY. A funeral service will be held at 10:30am Saturday, October 28th at the Lakeville United Church of Christ, 5687 Big Tree Road, Lakeville, NY 14480. How women can make mammograms more comfortable Mammograms help to detect breast cancer early, improving women’s prognosis as a result.

When women should begin getting mammograms remains open to debate. The American Cancer Society now recommends that women between the ages of 45 and 54 receive annual mammograms.

Despite the benefits of mammograms, many women avoid them out of fear of the pain and discomfort associated with the procedure. But researchers are examining how much pressure mammogram machines need to apply to get accurate breast images.

Until widespread customized mammograms are offered, women can take various steps to reduce the amount of discomfort they feel while undergoing these important screening procedures.

• Apply a topical numbing gel. BreastCancer.org says a study found that applying a numbing gel an hour before having a mammogram resulted in less discomfort when compared to placebo and other painreduction techniques. Be sure to discuss application of the gel with your physician prior to your procedure.

• Schedule your procedure for the right time. Do not schedule a mammogram right before or during a menstrual cycle, when breasts already are very tender due to hormonal changes. Waiting until seven to 14 days after a period is a better bet.

• Proficiency in EXCEL & Word, and a familiarity with Foundation software & AIA Documents is a plus.

• Previous construction office experience & 2 year degree preferred.
