When the Pilgrims famously landed on Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts, Fort Nassau, a Dutch base in New York, had already been established under the command of Hendrick Christiaensen in 1614. If that surprises you, then you will certainly be surprised to learn that the first American Thanksgiving, which was celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621, may have had some roots in the Dutch annual October Commemoration of the 1574 Lifting of the Spanish Siege of Leiden (Leyden). This Dutch celebration consisted of such traditions as the giving of thanks, feasting, war games and other such festivities. This means that a precursor to our first American Thanksgiving could well have been celebrated in New York for about 7 years before the Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving celebration in 1621. While many now suggest that this Dutch celebration is an ancestor to our First American Thanksgiving and while it may, in fact, be true, it does not change what is unique about this United States holiday. Unlike several subsequent generations, the Pilgrim settlers sought peaceful coexistence with their Native American neighbors. Also, acting contrary to a litany of propaganda and commonly accepted beliefs of the time, the Pilgrim settlers invited them to sit and break bread, a fact which suggests an understanding that Native American peoples were not the subhuman creatures they were so often, and so wrongly, represented to be at that time. That terrible first winter, Puritan settlers and Native American people came together, and they survived. In the United States, we seem to keep learning this lesson of unity over and over again, and each time, it seems to be somehow connected to Thanksgiving. In October of 1863, during the American Civil War, in which at least one of the mitigating issues was the debate over the humanity and, therefore, the freedom of African Americans, President Abraham Lincoln declared a national Day of Thanksgiving to be observed on the last Thursday in November. The United States was
National Award Winning Paper
divided by war. It was being torn apart, and yet, a Day of Thanks was observed. At last, the Civil War ended, and while there were many results, some positive and others not, one exceptionally good outcome was that the African American people were freed from slavery. The nation was again one United States of America. We came together, and we moved forward. In November of 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated about five months after announcing his intentions of sending comprehensive Civil Rights legislation to Congress. The Kennedys specifically requested that Macy’s still hold its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, a parade which remains a central Thanksgiving Day tradition to the present. As a nation, we mourned our president; we celebrated Thanksgiving, and we continued the struggle for Civil Rights legislation until the Civil Rights Act was passed the following year. We came together, and we moved forward. The past couple of years have been divisive for many Americans. Some Americans were pleased with the results of our 2016 presidential election while other Americans were not. The political ranks have been drawn up like picket lines, threatening to divide and destroy friends and even families all across the United States. From its earliest American roots, Thanksgiving has been, in part, about bridging divides and coming together to give thanks for the common blessings we all share. Perhaps one of the most important things to be thankful for this year are the people sitting around the table with us, regardless of color, culture, creed or political position. It may take some effort, but if we can still give thanks for the blessing of each other, we will come together. We will survive. We will move forward.

ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS? The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact. While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a very active, healthy 68-year-old until March, when I was hospitalized for two weeks for bilateral pneumonia. I was told by doctors at the hospital that it would take four to six weeks to get my health back. However, I experienced shortness of breath and bouts of coughing for months, and insisted on seeing a specialist three weeks ago. A CT scan and bronchoscopy showed symptoms typical of bird lung. We had a cockatiel for 17 years! I am now taking prednisone and ibuprofen, which are helping to clear up the inflammation. I hope to be able to return to work soon. My family doctor and several other doctors I know said that they’d studied this at med school but had never seen it in their practices. I hope this serves as a warning to other people who might be tempted to buy a pet bird or to breed them. I was lucky, but someone in poor health might not have survived the deadly combination of pneumonia and bird lung. ANSWER: “Bird lung” is a term that might refer to either of two possibilities. The first condition is “bird-fanciers lung” -- essentially an allergic reaction to bird droppings, feathers and the proteins of various birds. It can look very much like pneumonia, with abnormal chest X-ray findings that can be indistinguishable. The only cure is to get away from the source of the allergens, but prednisone might be necessary in severe cases. It is not an infection. The second possibility is an infection called psittacosis (sit-a-CO-sis), caused by the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci. Cockatiels are commonly infected by this organism, and the birds do not always appear ill. Psittacosis can be a very severe illness, potentially affecting multiple systems, but it usually responds rapidly to appropriate antibiotics, such as tetracyclines. Given your history, I suspect that bird-fancier’s lung, also called hypersensitivity pneumonitis, is more likely. It sounds like your specialist is treating you appropriately. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I read that microwaving food can cause the food to lose nutritional value or even to become carcinogenic. Is this true? -- S.G. ANSWER: Not really. Heating food does cause some nutrients, such as vitamin C, to break down. But microwaves don’t do that more than any other cooking method does. In general, the longer a food is kept very hot, the more nutrients are lost. So quick heating keeps in the most nutrients. Quickly steaming is another way. That’s essentially what a microwave does, since it heats water molecules very efficiently, steaming the water contained in food or that you use to rinse it. In fact, microwaving may be better than boiling, since many nutrients can be lost in the water if you just throw it out. As far as carcinogens (cancer-causing chemicals) go, these are products of very high heat, especially grilling meat. Because microwaves can heat unevenly, some areas of the food can get very hot while others stay cold, which is why it’s best, when microwaving, to cook for a short while and allow the heat to distribute itself before heating further or serving. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Delivering The Freedom Of Choice DID YOU KNOW? The Internet has made it easier than ever before to access information quickly. But people who look to the Internet for answers to their medical questions may be doing themselves more harm than good. A 2013 study from the Pew Research Center found that one-third of study participants had gone online to diagnose a medical condition. While the Internet can be a valuable resource, self-diagnosing medical conditions can be dangerous, as the risk of misdiagnosing signs or symptoms is considerable. But misdiagnosis is not the only potential problem of relying on the Internet instead of certified physicians for medical advice. “Cyberchondria” is a term used to described the unfounded escalation of concerns about certain symptoms a person might be experiencing. These unfounded concerns escalate as individuals search for and read information about their symptoms online. In fact, a 2008 Microsoft analysis of online search patterns found that one-third of the hundreds of thousands of people examined in the analysis tended to escalate their medical-related searches, potentially turning relatively minor medical conditions into something far worse, all without consulting a doctor. Men and women concerned about symptoms or medical problems should resist the temptation to self-diagnose online and should book an appointment with their physicians instead.

Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. On "Halloween Nite" the Town of Riga Recreation Department along with the Churchville Lions Club, hosted their annual Halloween Parade to provide the community's young "Trick or Treaters" a safe environment in which to
participate. The parade started at the Churchville Commons and was led up Main Street by the Churchville Fire Department's fire truck and the Churchville Fire Police provided safe passage to the Church Lodge in Churchville Park. Once there the youngsters were treated to a beautifully decorated building where apples, cider, donuts, and of course bags of candy were served. A costume contest was also held. All involved were thrilled that the ghoulish characters were able to participate in a safe and secure environment. HUGE “Thank
You’s” go out to the following people and organizations that continue to make this event memorable year after year…Lions Ruth Stewart, Lucy Hackett, the Riga Recreation Dept., Churchville Lions Club, the Churchville Fire Department, Churchville Fire Police, the Monroe County Parks Department, and parents of all the “Trick or Treaters”. David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga Thanks to our new postmaster at the Avon Post Office. He goes above and beyond to help all of us. Thank You, D.T.
The polarization of the US has set us up to be susceptible to manipulation. Instead of asking the more insightful questions and viewing the responses with an open mind we take a party (or tribal) stand and seek to PROVE our position. That opens us to deceptive practices: Changing the criteria, turning perpetrators into victims, deflecting attention, minimizing criminal behavior by generalizing it. Don’t be duped, it's a lie.
In this week’s edition 68% of those polled thought that monuments already erected should never be removed. There are over 700 Confederate monuments and an additional 800 Confederate symbols spanning 31 states and were erected during the Jim Crow era (1870s-1950s). Two of Stonewall Jackson’s great-greatgrandsons penned an open letter to the mayor of Richmond, the former capital of the Confederacy as well as the grandsons’ hometown, regarding Jackson’s statue there. “[W]e are writing today to ask for the removal of his statue, as well as the removal of all Confederate statues from Monument Avenue,” they wrote in their letter published on Slate. “They are overt symbols of racism and white supremacy."
Sunday my ATM card and transaction got frozen on the screen. While I was messaging the bank on FB and talking to them, some of you were swearing at me and throwing me dirty looks. Well, being a Sunday no one was at the bank, so I had to secure my card before I left. You would have done the same thing. Really, some of you people didn't have to act the way you did. It was not my fault. I worked out a solution with the bank, didn't say a word to you angry people and went over and bought a lottery ticket and won $100. I was the winner, not you in more ways than one. Not my fault what happened, the angry looks and words were not appreciated.

they do is complain about the noise that their neighbors make above them. If you don't like hearing them walking or TV playing or when they have family and friends over, then maybe you should move to an upstairs apartment or just move out. Don't make it miserable for your neighbors who have lived there several years before you moved in and never had a problem before you. I wanted a collision estimate not a blatant disregard of my personal space. The estimator entered my car without my permission and read my mail and the nutcracker correspondence inside. There was no reason to enter the car. Perhaps he was a nutcracker collector. Time to reconsider the Empire State and move to DC.

Pre-order frozen, unbaked apple, blueberry, cherry or raspberry pie @ 346-5235 EASY ‘GREEN’ THANKSGIVING IDEAS Thanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks and share special moments with family and friends. While the original Thanksgiving might have taken place during a time when food was sparse, nowadays Thanksgiving often involves excessive amounts of food, with more food ending up in the garbage than in celebrants’ bellies. The United States Department of Agriculture projects that Americans will throw away more than 200 million pounds of edible turkey meat this Thanksgiving holiday. And Thanksgiving typically ushers in a period of wastefulness, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says American households produce roughly 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than during the rest of the year. Reducing waste is a worthy goal year-round, but especially so during the holiday season. And accomplishing that goal can be done without sacrificing holiday traditions.

4 simple ways to save more for retirement It’s never too early to begin saving for retirement. While millions of people have no doubt heard or read those very words before, surveys indicate that few people are taking that lesson to heart. A 2018 survey from Bankrate.com found that 20 percent of Americans don’t save any of their annual income. Things aren’t necessarily rosier in Canada, where the financial institution CIBC reports that 32 percent of people nearing or on the cusp of retiring have nothing saved for retirement. Saving for retirement can seem impossible in households where every dollar counts. But the following are four simple ways to save more for retirement without making dramatic lifestyle changes. 1. Turn raises into retirement savings. According to the WorldatWork 2018-2019 Salary Budget Survey: Top Level Results, salary budgets in the United States are projected to rise by an average of 3.2 percent in 2019, while those in Canada are expected to rise by 3 percent. Working professionals can save more for retirement by converting some or all their raises into retirement savings. Pre-tax retirement accounts allow working professionals to put aside money before taxes are paid, so weekly paychecks will not be greatly affected if you choose to increase the percentage of your income you deposit into such accounts. Do this each time you receive a raise and your retirement savings will grow considerably. 2. Put bonuses to work. Professionals who receive bonuses can speak to their employer and request that their retirement contribution rates be increased when bonuses are issued. Many 401(k) retirement plans allow workers to contribute as much as 80 percent of their paychecks. While that’s not sustainable for most people every pay period, increasing your
contribution rate dramatically when your bonus is issued is a great way to save more for retirement. Contribution rates can then be returned to normal the following pay period. 3. Downsize your home. Empty nesters nearing retirement age may benefit by downsizing their homes. Doing so can reduce utility bills, property taxes and other expenses, and those savings can then be redirected into retirement accounts. 4. Reinvest tax returns. Working professionals accustomed to receiving tax returns can use that money to catch up on their retirement savings. Rather than spending tax returns or depositing them into traditional savings accounts, reinvest them into a retirement account. Speak with a financial planner to help you figure out how to accomplish this goal. Even if it requires opening a new account, the long-term benefits or reinvesting returns are substantial. Saving for retirement is important, and it’s never too late or too early to start setting aside more money for your golden years.

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Finding renewed vigor: Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another.

Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.

PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO LAWN DAMAGE Foot traffic: Lawns can take a pounding from foot traffic, leading to compaction and spots of dead lawn. Try to redirect the traffic elsewhere to give worn down areas a break. Aeration can relieve soil compaction. If a certain area has become the de facto pathway, install a paver, gravel or concrete walkway in that spot.

Nearly everyone agrees that we have much to be thankful for and that we owe much to a beneficent providence for our many blessings. Certainly we cannot credit our own meager abilities for all of the good fortune. We have to believe that we were somehow guided to the good things that we have. On Thanksgiving Day, families gather to give thanks to God. Such formal recognition of our dependence upon Divine Providence is good, but throughout the year, each grateful thought is a prayer of thanksgiving and every day is, as it should be, Thanksgiving Day. Our staff is thankful for the many wonderful friendships they have formed in this community through our years of service.

Lisa Ann Valone (Somers)␣ November 7, 2018␣ Greece: Lisa went to be with the Lord on November 7, 2018 at age 37. She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents Budd & Eleanor Somers and her maternal grandmother Dorothy Cantin. Lisa is survived by her devoted and loving husband and best friend Michael Valone; her parents Phil & Debbie Somers of Livonia and formerly of Spencerport; her brothers, Brian (Claire) of Penfield, Michael (Kristen) of Spencerport, and Christopher (Ashley) of Spencerport; nieces & nephews, Nicole, Ali, Haley, Drew, Caroline, Ben, Luke, and Jack; her grandfather Gerard (Vi) Cantin of Webster; mother and father-in-law Kathleen & David Schottler of Webster; brother-in-law Jeff ( Jenn) Schottler & sisters-in-law Aimee (Chris) Chappell and Jacki (Steve) Payne. Also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. Lisa will also be missed by her furry kids Addie and Hans. Lisa grew up in Spencerport, NY, the only sister that included a pack of three brothers. Her love of cooking was fostered at an early age and she carried that passion into adulthood. She loved the water and consequently became an avid swimmer and lifeguard in high school, enjoying many summers at the family cottage on Conesus Lake. Her mother Debbie, being a lifelong educator, instilled in Lisa a dedication to her own schooling. She followed in her father Phil’s accomplished footsteps and pursued her education at Xavier in accounting. Eventually she found herself back in Rochester to continue her career. She worked at several companies over the years until settling into a role working with her father. Lisa met Michael in 2011 and they soon became inseparable. Their love of their dogs and the outdoors were just some of the commonalities that led them to be united in marriage in 2014. Lisa became a valued member of the Rochester trail running scene, not only supporting Michael in his own running, but running many races herself. Despite a long battle with Crohn’s disease, Lisa was ever the caretaker, always watching out for her parents, brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. She and Michael built a life together over the last seven years that will be cherished forever. She will be missed by so many. Family & friends called on Monday, November 12th, from 4-8pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY. Lisa’s Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, November 13th, at 10:30am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 6591 Richmond Mills Road, Livonia, NY. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made in Lisa’s memory to Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, 120 Plymouth Ave., Rochester, NY 14608 or Lollypop Farm, 99 Victor Road, Fairport, NY 14450.␣ To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com

LEAVING NO ROOM FOR ARGUMENT Aside from the many financial advantages that funeral preplanning provides, there are other benefits on which you cannot put a price. Perhaps the most important of these is the ability to make decisions that lessen the likelihood of future family conflict. As anyone who has ever planned a family event knows, disagreements arise out of decisions great and small. When the emotion surrounding death is allowed to cloud the issue, the risk of strong disagreement can rapidly increase. With this in mind, perhaps the best way to keep emotions in check and ensure a peaceful and respectful observance of a life well-lived is to make funeral arrangements in advance. That is, the way you want them to be. Pre-need funeral plans can be made at any time and offer many advantages. Planning ahead also enables you to make financial arrangements to cover your funeral costs. Whether you decide to just provide personal information, make all or most of your selections, or completely plan and pay for your funeral in advance, we will explain all of your choices, and will respect your decisions. If you are interested in learning more, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Thank you from the family of
Lisa “JoJo” Cummins Our hearts are full of gratitude when we say many thanks to the community, friends, family and neighbors for the acts of kindness and support during the days before and after Lisa’s passing. We all feel blessed to be part of such an amazing community. A very special thank you to the Jeffres family, and their employees, who are not just employees but true family members, for the kindness and heart felt consideration during such a difficult time. Also, to the “Farmer’s Wife” for the organization of the fundraiser in such a short time. The outpouring of donations from not only our community but surrounding communities was unbelievable. To say we are overwhelmed is an understatement. Lisa was so grateful to each one of you who so beautifully showed your support to Rod, Case and Keean, and also to Amanda, Matt and William. The acts of kindness showed how much Lisa is and always will be dearly loved. Thank you does not seem to say enough. We all honestly have no words that could express our gratitude. With heartfelt gratitude and love, Rod, Case and Keean Cummins, Amanda, Matt and William Streamer, Dee (Doreen) and Jim Frediani, Randy and Debbie Freeman, Aunts, Uncles and Extended Family

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A project benefits from your organizational skills that get it up and running. Your success leaves a highly favorable impression. Don’t be surprised if you get some positive feedback soon. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Spend time on practical matters through the end of the week. Then begin shifting your focus to more-artistic pursuits. Resist being overly self-critical. Just allow yourself to feel free to create. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Restarting those creative projects you had set aside for a while will help provide a much-needed soothing balance to your hectic life. Besides, it will be like meeting old friends again. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A change in plans could make it tough to keep a commitment. But stay with it. You’ll get an A-plus for making the effort to do what’s right and not taking the easy way out by running off. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s enthusiasm for a workplace policy review is admirable. But be sure you know who is really behind the resistance to change before pointing your finger at the wrong person. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You can expect to have to do a lot of work through midweek. Devote the rest of the week to checking your holiday plans in case some need to be adjusted to accommodate changes. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Try to avoid signing on the dotted line in the early part of the week. You need time to study issues that weren’t fully explored. Later in the week might be more favorable for decision-making. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A new development could snarl travel schedules or other holiday-linked projects. Some flexibility might be called for to deal with the problems before they get too far out of hand. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Relatives seek your advice on a matter you’d rather not be involved in. If so, use that sage Sagittarian tact to decline the “offer,” so that no one’s feelings are needlessly hurt. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A shift in planning direction might help you speed up your progress toward achieving that longplanned goal. Trusted colleagues are ready to offer some valuable support. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) An unexpected demand for settlement of an old loan could create some pre-holiday anxiety. But you might not really owe it. Check your records thoroughly before remitting payment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to get into the social swim and enjoy some well-earned fun and games with those closest to you before you have to resume more serious activities next week. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ability to sense the needs of others makes you a wise counselor for those seeking help with their problems. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com.

GET ORGANIZED AND IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished. Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity. Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once. Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed. Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week. Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks. Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, women in the United States are entitled to 12 weeks maternity leave. Women can choose to use a portion of that maternity leave even before their children are born if physical limitations are making it challenging for them to continue working. Women should put their health and the safety of their unborn children ahead of their responsibilities at work. In addition, women should not hesitate to speak with their employers about their comfort levels while pregnant. If an issue arises, speak with your boss, who deserves the benefit of the doubt. In some instances, breastfeeding also is protected by law at job sites or at the office. It is best for women to familiarize themselves with breastfeeding policies ahead of time so they can make the proper accommodations. Pregnant women should discuss with their doctors which work activities are permissable and which should be avoided at particular times in the pregnancy. Every effort should be made to avoid toxic substances, and pregnant women should not lift heavy items or engage in any potentially risky physical activity. For more information about workplace rights, visit the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at www.eeoc.gov.
