STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.
8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Thank You! The Levesque family would like to take the time to thank all family, friends and co-workers for their support during Rick’s Passing. A special thanks goes out to the Richmond Fire Department, to Kevin and his amazing crew at the Kevin Dougherty Funeral Home and the entire workgroup of IGT. Also, a sincere Thank You to Rick’s former boss, Emmit who has initiated the process of Rick’s death to be attached to the Wall of Angels. Our memories will live on thru him. RIP Hicks! Love and Thank You all...
The Levesque Family PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic. “On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard. If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price. Learn More: For further facts and advice, go to www.windownation.com.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Arian penchant for impatience shows, as you consider passing a problemprone project on to someone else. Best advice: Stay with it and work out those snarls yourself. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Even patient Bovines can be frustrated when carefully made plans go awry. But crank up that “stick-to-it-ivity” you do so well, and you’ll soon find that your schedule is back in sync. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your aspect favors using more resourceful means in dealing with a workplace situation. Some discreet checking around could help shed light on the root cause of the problem. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You show an unusually strong streak of stubbornness in rejecting suggestions from friends and/or family members early in the week. But you become more receptive by the week’s end. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat might find a gentler approach more effective when dealing with those who resist needed changes. Remember, the word “persuasion” starts with the sound “purr.” VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A disappointing experience with someone you felt you could trust can be painful. But there just might be more to this situation than you’re aware of. Press for an explanation. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Changing your views about something you believe in isn’t easy. But you might reconsider as the facts come in. Keep your mind open, even if you’re uneasy about what you might learn. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might have to do some serious shifting of gears to get your project back on track. But cheer up. Your hard work starts to produce some positive results by the week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unsettling mood at the start of the week soon lifts and gives way to a more positive attitude as you find fun and friendship beginning to dominate your aspect. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A delay in firming up holiday plans could work to your advantage. Use this time to scout out possibilities that might be more in line with what those close to you would prefer. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Some people might question some of the new friends you’ve welcomed into your life. But your ability to see beyond the obvious helps you recognize how special they are. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Financial matters can be especially tricky this week. It’s best to follow a conservative investment path for now, and wait for a more fortuitous time to take a bolder approach. BORN THIS WEEK: Your warmth, your humor and your genuine concern for others make you someone people love to keep close to their lives. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Scottsville Fire Department brought out a fire truck and handed out treats for Halloween in Scottsville. I can't thank the Department enough for their generosity and the time spent volunteering within our community. They made the smiles of children in Scottsville even bigger! I hope this will be annual event! Thanks to the Bank St. Elder Center! You guys are wonderful. Kept me active all spring to fall. Got a chance to meet new people and laugh. Keep up the good work. Today I was grocery shopping in Brockport, in a handicapped scooter, due to recent surgery. A wonderful, kind lady ahead of
To the person complaining about the screaming toddler, stop to consider one of several things. Perhaps the child was ill, which is why (s)he was crying, and they were waiting that long in the store for a prescription? No, I am not this child's mother, but I have been in that position before! Also, you complain that she should teach her child how to behave, but did you ever stop to think that was exactly what she was doing? Yes, it's very inconvenient & irritating to hear a toddler scream. But by not giving in to
me at checkout put all my groceries out of the cart for me. It was so kind of her! Thank you, Sweet Lady! I have voted in suburban Western New York, Buffalo and Rochester areas, for over 30 years. The election workers have always been helpful and efficient and the polling places convenient and welcoming. I've never had to wait more than a few minutes to vote. The ballots are easy to understand and machines in good working order. I've always been confident my vote is properly counted. You read of hours long waits and malfunctioning machines in other parts of the country. Not
here. The Monroe County Board of Elections seems to be doing things right - just try their website; it's contains everything you need to know about a current election. Now if only I could convert those voters that don't agree with me! Thank you to all who helped me the evening before Thanksgiving in Livonia. I had taken a nasty fall on a sidewalk. People were covering me with their coats and praying with me while we waited for the ambulance. Thank you to Avon ambulance for being available to take me to the hospital. Thank you to Art and Karla for driving my car home and providing us
whatever the child's demands were that set off a tantrum, the parent was actually teaching the child that a tantrum will not get him or her what they want. Everybody wants to see a wellbehaved child, but nobody wants to bear witness to the discipline it takes to get there!
see these people ignoring signs, but because there's NO enforcement it keeps happening.
Why won't stores enforce their posted rules? Since they don't, at least can they update them. Change the NO PARKING OR STANDING SIGNS to PARKING FOR THOSE WITH NO PATIENCE or THOSE WHO BELIEVE THEY'RE SPECIAL SIGNS, PARK HERE. How about the 10 ITEMS OR LESS signs. I went through the [car wash]. Halfway through, I heard an odd noise and I assumed it was water or brushes. I arrived home and saw an 8-inch scratch on my driver’s door. I went back told them about it. They told me they would review the video they have for every car that comes through. The next I went back and they told me they reviewed the video and the scratch was there when I entered the wash. They do not have a camera at the end of the wash, only at the beginning. Be careful at the car wash as they will deny any damage done by them. I stopped going because of this incident.

In regard to the post citing New York State, 'Right to Farm' and the smells of agriculture; your right to farm stops when the rights of others are stomped on. These rights stop when you deposit this waste on the public roads, it stops when you obliterate the public roads with mud and stones tracked from your fields, it stops when your Round-up or similar leaves your property and kills vegetation belonging to others. Your right to farm stops when overloaded or over height equipment damages roads or pulls down wires, your right stops when this highly concentrated, high volume bio hazardous waste you call manure leaves your property thru run-off, wind or underground migration. What are my rights?

The NFPA recommends celebrants who prefer natural Christmas trees choose ones with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. Dry trees are more likely to catch fire than freshly cut trees. Adding water to the tree stand each day will keep trees fresher longer. When placing the tree, avoid placing it too close to heat sources, making sure it is at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, or lights.

CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES Fraser fir trees are typically uniformly pyramid-shaped trees that have strong branches that turn slightly upward. These trees have good needle retention and a dark, blue-green hue. Many people feel these trees have a pleasant scent. Because they are such a quintessential Christmas tree, Fraser fir, as well as their close cousin, Balsam fir, tend to be more expensive than others.

Microwave for 30 seconds, then stir and microwave for another 30 seconds until done.
Breakfast Pizza Put a healthy twist on pizza for a quick, satisfying breakfast kids and adults will love. Start with sliced naan or a whole wheat bagel. Toast to warm and add a smear of ricotta cheese. Then top with sliced tomatoes and sprinkle with a dash of fleur de sel and dried basil, if desired. If you prefer a sweeter pizza, skip the tomatoes and use sliced fruit instead. This tasty breakfast will fight hunger pangs straight until lunchtime.

HOW CHILDREN CONFRONT LOSS While the loss of a parent may seem like an insurmountable obstacle for a young child to overcome, children are generally able to move on with their lives as long as they receive adequate support and assistance. Even very young children grieve, although their grieving may bear little resemblance to that of an adult. Like adults, each child grieves in his or her own personal way in accordance with particular circumstances, which include the emotional responses and parenting abilities of the surviving parent. With this in mind, adults should listen to grieving children and respond to their individual needs. Shielding children from the truth only serves to deprive them of the ability to grieve and grow. Helping children grieve can be challenging because how they show their grief depends on their level of maturity and the relationship they had with the person who died. They may express what they are feeling with humor, behavioral issues or sleep problems. To learn more about handling grief, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Should you shield the valleys from the windstorms, you would never see the beauty of their canyons.” ~ Elisabeth Kübler-Ross
“We are inclined to believe those whom we do not know because they have never deceived us” ~ Samuel Johnson Each year we read nw stories about victims who have been duped by confident men. The same old crooked schemes work on people who should know better but who put an almost childlike trust in total strangers. Johnson speculates that we tend to believe strangers because they have no record of deceit. The people close to us may have “fibbed” to us or misrepresented facts, perhaps only to tease. The stranger’s record is unblemished until we learn to our sorrow that he, too, might lie to us for gain. There are definite advantages in making funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Let us review these with you…no cost or obligation.

Remember Dr. Doaga will see Dr. Washburn’s patients at our office.
1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Platelet Donations Are Perfectly Safe --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am writing about platelet donations. As a way of giving back, I donate platelets. I was wondering if there is a time that a person should stop donating, based on age or difficulty. I am 61 years old, and the past three times I’ve donated, I felt uncomfortable in some way. Either my arm or wrist hurt, or I had a feeling of malaise during the donating process. One time, I was told that my platelet count was on the low side, but it was not any danger to my well-being. I feel well immediately afterward and do not have health issues, so my concern is whether this is somehow detrimental to my own health as I age. -- S.B. ANSWER: Platelet donation generally is a very well-tolerated procedure. The platelets are removed from the donor’s blood via a process called apheresis; a centrifuge separates the blood into four components: plasma (containing proteins), platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells. For platelet donors, just the platelets are removed, and the rest of the blood components are returned to the donor. In order to keep the blood from clotting inside the machine, sodium citrate is added to the apheresis machine. This reduces the calcium, which is needed for blood clotting. However, some people can develop symptoms of low calcium during the apheresis. This can be treated by slowing the rate of donation, or by taking some oral calcium before donating. More-severe cases might require giving intravenous calcium to the patient via another IV catheter. The Food and Drug Administration recommends that people make no more than 24 donations per year, but there is good evidence that platelet donation is safe. I congratulate you on being a communityminded citizen, and I can reassure you that you have very little short-term risk and essentially zero long-term risk from donating platelets, whatever your age. Donate as often as is comfortable, and try taking a calcium supplement before donating. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have taken 5 mg zolpidem (Ambien) nightly for about three years. My doctor seems to think this is acceptable. I sleep five to six hours with this aid and function normally in the morning. Recently I was told that this drug has a cumulative effect on the body. Would you verify this? Over-thecounter sleep aids have no effect, and this drug seems to be the only way I can sleep. -- D.M. ANSWER: Zolpidem and its cousins, eszopiclone (Lunesta) and zaleplon (Sonata), work for a relatively short time in the body before they are metabolized, so they do not build up in the body. They are mostly gone in the morning, and grogginess is not a problem for most people. However, people often develop a dependence on these medications; it becomes difficult to sleep without them. More importantly, they do increase the risk of falls and auto accidents, especially when used every day and in people over 65. I don’t recommend them for the long term, and I have referred my patients who can’t sleep without them to a sleep specialist, who sometimes (but not always) is able to find a better solution than daily Ambien. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. You depend on your tires m ore during the w inter than any other season. So before the roads get slick, check your tires to be sure they aren’t w orn and that they are properly inflated. You should be able to find the proper tire pressure on the inside of your driver’s side door. Once you’re sure your tire pressure is appropriate, m ake a note to check again later in the w inter. WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Be mindful of permits. Some home improvement projects require permits, and these permits often have expiration dates. Homeowners must keep permits in mind when projects start to stall, recognizing that they may need to reapply for permits if projects go unfinished for especially long periods of time.

Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.

KEEP RODENTS OUT THIS W INTER M any people mistakenly believe pests should only be dealt w ith once inside a home. How ever, the best pest c ontrol is the preventative kind and c an be accomplished by taking proactive steps to prevent pests from entering the home in the first place. Rodents, the most common w inter pests, invade nearly 21 million U.S. homes each w inter. Despite all the proper precautions, if rodents still find their w ay inside, they often leave clues of their presence. Droppings, one of the most visible signs, are most frequently found in kitc hen cabinets, along w alls, on top of w all studs or beams, near nests and in boxes, bags, old furniture and other objects. Gnaw marks and trac ks are other visible evidence of a rodent problem. Rodents w ill also sometimes reveal themselves through scurrying sounds.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS
STORING TOOLS PROPERLY
Attic leaks or water elsewhere might signal issues with the roof. Figure out if water inside the home is coming from the roof. Water stains do not always indicate problems with the roofing, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Keep original cases and labels. Many tools come in hard cases to protect the tools and reduce users’ injury risk. Paints, varnishes, stripping agents, and other chemicals should be stored in their original containers with labels intact.

Winter in the Village Returns to Dansville By Amanda Dudek
Each year, the Holiday Spirit finds its way to the valley village of Dansville and nestles comfortably between the surrounding hills. Throughout Dansville’s historic downtown district, the shops and establishments of Dansville will burst into displays of holiday cheer from 8:30am to 8:00pm on Saturday, December 1st for Dansville’s annual Winter in the Village event. The crack of that first December chill bracing the air reminds visitors that the Holidays are at hand, but with nearby neighbors and family as well as the memories of past holidays, their hearts are warm. During Winter in the Village this Holiday Season, there will be so much to enjoy: the annual Arts & Crafts Sale, Santa lighting the Christmas trees in Church Park as well as the offerings of many local businesses, vendors, artisans and entertainers who are located throughout the downtown district. Many downtown businesses and restaurants offer a wide variety of sales, specials and entertainment for Winter in the Village visitors, which make excellent, unique gifts while, at the same time, supporting the local community. Dansville’s annual Wine Tasting Tour will be joining Winter in the Village again this year from 5:30pm-8:30pm, featuring several New York wineries, cideries and breweries with glasses and wristbands going on sale at 5pm at 126 Main Street. What a delicious way to share the excellence of our Finger Lakes Wine Country with both your instate and out-of-state friends and family. The festival kicks off with the Jingle Bells 5K Registration at the Community Center at 8:00am. Letters to Santa will follow from 9am-noon at the Post Office. The Arts & Crafts Show will take place at the Town Hall from 10am-7pm. Meanwhile, Genesee Community College will host Family Fun Activities & Christmas Movies as well as vendors. Grace Baptist Church is inviting children ages 5-9
to make a Tiny Gingerbread House from 11am-noon during the festival with limited space available. Ice Sculptures will be unveiled at noon and remain displayed until they melt! A Craft/ Vendor Show will take place at 167 Main Street from 3pm-8pm as well as at the Town Hall from 10am-6pm. Nearby, children can visit with Santa at the Dansville Artworks at 153 Main Street from noon-3:30pm. In the late afternoon, festival visitors are invited to watch the Santa Parade as it moves down Main Street, escorted by the Dansville Fire Department, Ambulance and the High School Drum Corps. The Santa Parade starts at 4:30pm with Santa riding in a firetruck from ArtWorks to the Gazebo in Church Park. Following the parade as the sunlight dims, Santa will light the trees for the Fantasy of Lights Tree Lighting ceremony at the Church Park Gazebo, and the Elis B. Hyde Children’s Chorus will regale attendees with carols. As a new delight this year, a Christmas Light Show will start at dusk at the top of Town Hall and along Main Street to the Library, illuminating various locations on Main Street. Horse & Wagon Rides, free of charge, will thrill young and old alike and will take place in front of Star Theatre from 5-8pm, sponsored by the Dansville Rotary and the Genesee Valley Penny Saver. The Genesee Valley Federal Credit Union will sponsor this year’s holiday music guests from 5pm-8pm, and Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church will feature a Live Nativity. Winter in the Village is a festival designed to begin the Christmas holiday with fun-filled memories, hometown flair and sense of pride. The festival is sponsored by the Dansville Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Dansville, who remind people to visit the entire business community, discover great bargains and dine in our fine restaurants. To learn more details about this year’s Festival, visit the “Discover Dansville” page on Facebook. Join us for Dansville’s Winter in the Village, a beautiful, family-friendly event that has been creating memories for over 20 years.

Finding work after 50 Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. • Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago.
