Congratulations to the Caledonia Fire Department for taking first place in the Scottsville Parade of Lights truck decorating contest. Great job! Just wanted to give a shout out to anyone who has outside decorations up and lit during the early mornings and afternoons. I drive a school bus for pre-k kids and it makes their day as we run around town picking up kids. I hear a lot of ahhhs and ooos. Thanks...it gives the kids something to watch for instead of "are we there yet". P.S. I would remind people to pay attention and not run the stop signs on the busses...it is a BIG ticket and points on your license.

When you're out walking after dark, be sure to wear dark clothes (no reflecting gear) and walk not facing traffic. Before you do, also remember to update your will and leave final instructions for your memorial service. (When out walking after dark, always wear

Thank you to the Livingston County community for generously supporting the St. Pauly Clothing shed at St. Timothy Lutheran Church. Profits realized from your donations this year benefited Teresa House, LC Habitat for Humanity, Focus on the Children, Livonia Toys for Tots, Livonia Food Pantry, and the new Open-Door Mission’s Coldwater Women and Children’s Residential Home. Thank you for partnering with us in this opportunity to be in community service.

At the Victor Walmart on Saturday a couple ahead of me were purchasing several dozen red roses. When they were done the young gentleman loaded my groceries into my cart and added a dozen red roses...then they left. When I turned to pay the cashier, she said it was all paid for and I was to get the change from the money he had given her. They made my day. Thank you so much! A Thankful Senior Citizen

What happened to Bussers? Waitress/waiter cleans your table, sticks fingers inside glasses, then brings your food and his/her thumb is in your plate! No wonder people are sick. Gross. Hire Bussers. I must vent to the person who moved into an apartment complex. You must remember, it's a lot different than living in your own home. People do walk in the upstairs apartment; they do play music; they do watch TV. If you are not happy with a downstairs apartment, then you should not have moved to a downstairs apartment, or you

If you're a younger Homeowner, please consider your elderly neighbors, don't leave them to pick up all YOUR blowing leaves....... I don't have 1 tree, you do & only once did you blow your leaves, 3 weeks ago, but you put it in front of our mail boxes & near the sign so the town couldn't pick them up. The storm drain is covered, so when it rained these past 3 weeks, I've had to use boots to get my mail due to the huge puddle...... I paid to have my yard raked twice, but your yard is still full. This is getting expensive. Please think of your elderly neighbors. Happy Holidays!!! PS this Santa isn't

giving you guys anything this year. Yeah, I’m not happy. I'm traveling straight, bus makes a left in front of me. In turning lane, woman who was on my bumper passed me, and there was a car in left lane. she couldn’t wait to shop, I guess. Who passes someone in a turning lane? Obviously an impatient too much in a hurry person. In a parking lot, salt sprayer spraying salt in parking lot, sprayed it all over me and the [person] had a smile on his face. Woman continually stopping and braking, letting everybody go across road, letting people turn left, kept on doing it, and my car skidded stopping, I had to keep watching her. Yes, I was doing the speed limit. No, I wasn’t tailgating. I’ll renew my license next year, but who really wants to?

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The arts are a strong part of the Arian aspect, with music becoming more dominant. An important decision looms as a longtime relationship takes an unexpected turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Surrounding yourself with beautiful things helps restore the Taurean soul. Enjoy an art exhibit, for example. Or redecorate your personal space with something truly splendid. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Some colleagues might try to talk you out of what they insist is a risk, but which you consider an opportunity. As usual, follow your own good sense when making your decision. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A workplace change you might have worried about soon proves to be highly favorable for the clever Crab who is ready to take advantage of new opportunities opening up. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Congratulations. Your Leonine pride is polished to a dazzling new brilliance thanks to your success in winning support for your new project from even the most doubtful of detractors. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unsettling rumor about a colleague’s apparently regrettable behavior is soon proved groundless, allowing you to enjoy the upcoming end-of-year festivities in a happy mood. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your success in helping to create a harmonious environment out of a chaotic situation earns you the admiration of someone who could become an important new presence in your life. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your Scorpion’s sense of loyalty could find you leading a passionate defense of a loved one you feel is being unfairly treated. The week’s end brings long-awaited family news. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your keen instincts are once more on high alert as you find yourself being pressured to make a quick decision about a certain matter. More facts come to light by week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) An unexpected workplace development could disrupt some family plans. A full explanation, however, averts domestic discord. A financial matter continues to need attention. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Spend time away from distractions to reassess some recent moves that might not have worked out as you had hoped. What you learn could be invaluable for future decision-making. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A recent act of kindness is a reminder of how important your friends are to you. You might want to show your appreciation by hosting a special preNew Year’s party just for them. BORN THIS WEEK: You always try to do your best, which sometimes causes you to be critical of those who don’t live up to your standards. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Vote at: www.gvpennysaver.com

During the holiday season, there is an almost supernatural outpouring of generosity, giving that flows from the fortunate to those who have been less so. How extraordinary then to find a charitable organization that not only lavishes generosity upon youngsters with less at Christmastime, but which also cares for and strives to meet the needs of these children throughout the rest of the year, as well! One such organization, Focus on the Children (FOTC), is a funding agency that serves the needs of children in Livingston County, needs which cannot be met by any other agency. Even when others help, there are often gaps in the resources that are available, and the FOTC seeks to fill those gaps. Its primary focus year-round is providing new beds and cribs for babies and children in need, something no other agency does. It also aims to provide opportunities like camps, sports equipment, musical instruments or lessons and trips, evening the playing field for children disadvantaged by their families’ economic or social background. Focus on the Children also runs yearly Back to School and Christmas programs which only accept new items. It has generous donors within Livingston county and beyond who have made these campaigns a huge success. This Christmas, the FOTC is on track to serve around 300 children. The process by which these programs work is rather unique and demonstrates the compassion, consideration and respect the agency has for the families and children it assists. The process for receiving gifts from their Christmas program is an excellent example of this. First, a family must be recommended by a third party such as a school counselor or social worker. This is because FOTC no longer has an in-house caseworker. Instead, they have chosen to utilize the help of caseworkers and counselors of schools and offices like DSS, DOH, DOMH to receive referrals of children after assessing their needs. This not only helps put more of its money toward the children, but it also nurtures the relationship between families and these individuals. This school counselor or social worker must first ask the parents/guardians of the

children for permission to recommend their child(ren) to the FOTC program. This may seem like a small requirement, but it makes a huge difference. Rather than being unnecessary needlessly embarrassed by sudden questions or receipt of items, a familiar person, most likely someone who is already helping the family in some way, offers to help equip the parents/guardians with gifts to give to their children for the holidays. For someone struggling financially, so many things can feel as though they are beyond one’s control. Going to the parent first puts this process within the parent/ guardian’s control. Once approved, the parent/guardian receives mail from FOTC and answers questions to help the agency choose gifts best suited for the ages and tastes of their child or children. The parent/guardian is given a date, time and place from which to pick up the unwrapped gifts set aside for them. This, too, is thoughtful as many parents/guardians look forward to wrapping gifts for their loved ones. In previous years, the generosity of others has enabled FOTC to be very gracious, giving several items to each family. FOTC is a United Way agency, and a majority of its funding comes from private donors and memorials. According to the Focus on the Children President, Sarah Sherwood, “Focus on the Children has a wonderful rapport with the community, and we are humbled by the community’s generosity year after year.” While its Christmas program is one of FOTC’s most precious campaigns making certain that no child goes without a Christmas it is not the only way in which the FOTC supports children throughout Livingston County. The holiday season is always a beautiful time of year, characterized by many good deeds of love and charity. Still, when the season ends, many children’s needs remain. Focus on the Children hopes that many kind and compassionate friends and neighbors will be willing to share their blessings with these children not only at Christmas but throughout the year, as well.

Bl ue Christm a sService Friday, Dec. 21 • 7pm While Advent is a season of hope and Christmas is a season of Joy, we know that not everyone feels hopeful or like celebrating. December 21st is the longest night, the winter solstice, in the Northern Hemisphere, the shortest day of the year and the official start of winter. Please join us for a time of worship when we come with our yearnings seeing the return of light and hope.

GIFT-WRAPPING TIPS AND TRICKS Keep supplies at the ready Devote a bin or bins to wrapping supplies and tools. Having scissors, paper, tape, ribbon, and more in a designated spot will cut down on having to hunt and peck when it comes time to wrap. Martha Stewart suggests getting a rotary cutter to cut long straight or decorative edges on wrapping paper. Rotary cutters may be easier to use than scissors, especially when paired with a ruler.

What a man needs in gardening is a cast-iron back, with a hinge in it. ~Charles Dudley Warner, My Summer in a Garden, 1871

Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all. While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help owners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.” Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

COST CONSIDERATIONS Funeral pre-arrangement plans that include pre-payment enable consumers to pay in advance for options such as the coffin, embalming, chapel, dressing/casketing, floral arrangements, stationery, staff services, and the basic service fee, as well as for cemetery expenses such as the grave, headstone, opening and closing, outer burial container, and other fees. A guaranteed plan locks in the price of such goods and services at the time they are purchased. While a non-guaranteed plan may not lock in prices, it will enable any accumulated funds to accrue interest, which will likely help mitigate final costs. In either case, pre-payment funds are held by a third party, either in a trust or in a life insurance policy. Thousands of people choose to plan their funeral and burial expenses and in doing so, they receive great emotional relief for themselves and their loved ones. Prepaying your funeral will allow you to make your own funeral plans, but, more importantly, will spare surviving relatives and loved ones from the emotional burden of having to make decisions at a time of great stress and grief. If you would like to learn more about preplanning, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. “Affluence without simplicity is a giant trap. Every saint who ever lived, lived simply… not because he was holier but because he was smarter…”

~ Quoted in Christian Science Monitor

No matter how much material things we acquire, most of us want more. We can recite quite a list of things we think we’d enjoy having if only we could afford them. The world’s wealthiest people are the first to admit that money cannot buy happiness. The smartest people have learned that the mere accumulation of things will not bring lasting satisfaction. Why not be content to live as the smartest saints do… simply. We are always available to help in any way that is needed. We help individuals to make funeral arrangements both at time of need or well in advance of need. How can we help you?

FOOD ALLERGY FAST FACTS Food allergies can develop from birth, and some last a lifetime. Others are developed at different ages and may be outgrown. No matter when allergies stop or start, they can be a life-threatening problem for children. Although food allergies may be managed more easily at home, they present different challenges for school-aged children. School nurses and administrative officials should be informed about food allergies, especially if they are severe enough to warrant medical intervention, such as medication. Food allergies are quite common. Consider these allergy facts that can help parents better understand any issues their children might face. • The Food Allergy Research and Education network says nearly 15 million people in the United States, many of whom are children, are affected by food allergies. • One in 13 Canadians, or roughly 2.5 million people, are affected by a food allergy, according to estimates from the Allergy, Genes and Environmental Network. • Around 7 percent of Canadian children under the age of 18 report having at least one food allergy. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have other related conditions, such as asthma and other allergies. • Food allergies are an immune system response to the food, not a case of digestive intolerance. • Among food allergic children, peanuts are the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and shellfish, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. • Food allergies can cause everything from mild reactions, such as itchiness or hives, to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction. • Risk of food allergies increases when there is a parent who suffers from any type of allergic disease - even those beyond food allergies. • A recent study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that children are taking longer to outgrow milk and egg allergies. • Food avoidance remains the best way to prevent symptoms of food allergies. That is why reading product labels is vital.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Strange ‘Pimples’ Are Rare Disease RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness. “There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: After having several strange-looking “pimples” on my thighs and one on my face, I was told it is lymphomatoid papulosis. One or two people in a million are diagnosed with this. I know that it is not contagious, but what is it? What causes it, how is it treated, and what can I do to avoid these? They take weeks to heal. -- R.R. ANSWER: Lymphomatoid papulosis is a rare disease. It is in the category of cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders. It is a chronic disease, and lasts years or even decades. The underlying cause is not known exactly, but it is related in many ways to other lymphoproliferative diseases, such as mycosis fungoides and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The cells of the skin lesions you notice have similar genetic rearrangements as lymphoma cells. Fortunately, LyP has an excellent prognosis, although people with LyP are at increased risk for developing one of these serious conditions. The papules of LyP can appear on the extremities or the hands and face, and less commonly on other places on the body. They may start off as small red papules, get larger and then crust over. Often, several exist at different stages. Diagnosis may not be easy, as it takes an experienced dermatopathologist (pathologist with special training in skin diseases) and enough tissue to look at the genetics of the cells. Treatment is not necessary for every person with LyP. But for those who do require it, one might be ultraviolet-light treatment. More severe cases may require methotrexate, but this needs to be managed by an expert. Experts have recommended six-month visits to evaluate for early signs of enlarging lymph nodes, which might indicate the development of a lymphoproliferative disorder. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion, as a noninterested party, on laser therapy. I see many ads touting its advantages and success in treating bone-on-bone knee osteoarthritis. My orthopedic doctor recommended knee replacements on both my knees. I had arthroscopic surgery on the left knee four years ago and was recommended total knee replacement on the right knee about three years ago. How long can I put off surgery, and what is the outlook if I don’t have it done? I am an 80-year-old female in good health, except for the osteoarthritis. I use naproxen when needed. If it works, I think laser therapy would be less pain and downtime. ANSWER: Low-level laser therapy has been studied in people with osteoarthritis, and some of the studies have shown reductions in pain and stiffness. The laser is thought to have an effect on circulation. However, the laser generally has been effective in people with mild to moderate disease, and bone-on-bone is severe. I think laser may help some people, but some of the benefit probably is due to placebo effect. As far as putting off your knee replacements, I have been through this many times with my own patients. Some get it done right away; others avoid surgery until they can’t take it any longer, with worsening pain, stiffness and inability to exercise. Most people have told me that they wish they had done the surgery sooner. By the way, I am interested in helping people, but have no conflicts of interest. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Pushing oneself physically can be exhausting and demanding. But whether you’re a seasoned athlete, a part-time fitness enthusiast or even someone who lives a largely sedentary lifestyle, you can find ways to dig down and improve your overall endurance. Many athletes find pushing their bodies past certain boundaries to be empowering. Letting complacency set in is easy, but finding the motivation to press on and push ahead takes mental determination.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Drive a vehicle with stop/ start technology. Stop/start systems, in which engines shut off automatically when drivers brake and restart automatically when the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal, can make more efficient use of fuel. Once exclusive to hybrid cars, stop/start technology is now more widely available and can cut back on fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. That’s especially attractive to ecoconscious commuters who live in big cities where stop-andstart traffic is unavoidable. What’s more, many modern air conditioning compressors operate off electricity and not via a car’s engine, meaning vehicles with stop/start technology will stay cool in the summer even when the engine shuts off.

3 tips to overcome everyday aches and pains Pain is a significant concern for many people. Estimates from the International Association for the Study of Pain suggest that one in five adults across the globe suffer from pain. Pain can affect anyone, even people who have not been in an accident or suffered an injury while playing a sport or performing another physical activity. For example, lower back pain, which can be caused by sitting at a desk for long stretches of time, is the most common type of chronic pain in the United States. Such pain may be unavoidable, but that does not mean it and other types of everyday aches and pains cannot be overcome. 1. Begin a well-rounded exercise regimen. Regular exercise that includes both strength training and cardiovascular exercise increases blood flow and helps build a strong core. A strong core supports the spine and reduces the pressure on it, making it less likely people who sit for long stretches at a time will end the day with lower back pain. Routine exercise also helps other areas of the body by keeping muscles loose and flexible. Before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women, especially those with existing aches and pains, should consult their physicians about which exercises they should do and which they might want to avoid. 2. Employ RICE. RICE, which stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation, can help men and women overcome the aches and pains that result as the body ages and tendons begin to lose some of their elasticity. RICE might be most helpful for people who have been diagnosed with tendinitis. Athletes over 40 who engage in activities that require repetitive motion might need to take more days off between rounds of golf or other competitive and/or repetitive activities. If tendinitis

flares up, take some time away, icing any sore areas, wrapping them in bandages, and elevating them while resting. Athletes rarely want to sit on the sidelines, but a few days off can go a long way toward alleviating the pain associated with tendinitis. 3. Recognize your body may develop some limitations. Age should not prevent you from being physically active, and numerous studies have touted the benefits of continuing to exercise into your golden years. However, as the body ages, muscle fibers become less dense, resulting in a loss of flexibility that increases the risk of injury and/or soreness. As men and women grow older, they shouldn’t abandon activities like gardening or strength training. But they may need to scale back on the intensity with which they perform such activities. Doing so can prevent the kinds of muscle strains associated with aging. Pain affects more than one billion people across the globe. But some simple strategies can help people overcome pain and enjoy a rich quality of life.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.
