HOLIDAY PARTY MUST-HAVES

BENEFITS OF LED HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Christmas music can go a long way toward getting everyone in the holiday spirit. Utilize iTunes or music streaming services such as Amazon Prime Music or Pandora to ensure that the holiday hits keep coming throughout the party.

Ease of installation: LED lights are easily installed, and the OEERE says as many as 25 strings of LEDs can be connected end-to-end without overloading a wall socket. That can ease the nerves of homeowners concerned about the potential hazards of elaborate holiday lighting displays.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Careful, Lamb. Don’t let your generous nature lead to some serious overspending as you contemplate your holiday gift-giving. Your social life kicks off into high gear by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A positive attitude helps you weather annoying but unavoidable changes in holiday plans. Aspects favor new friendships and reinforcement of existing relationships. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Demands on your energy level could be much higher than usual as you prepare for the upcoming holidays. Be sure to pace yourself. Friends and family will be happy to help. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Don’t allow a suddenly icy reaction from a friend or family member to continue without learning what caused it -- and what can be done to restore that once warm and caring relationship. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A relationship seems to be unraveling, mostly from a lack of attention. It might be a good idea to ease up on whatever else you’re doing so you can spend more time working to mend it. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) New facts emerge that not only help explain the recent rift with a trusted colleague, but also might provide a chance to wipe the slate clean and make a fresh start in your friendship. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s personal situation is, fortunately, resolved in time for you to get back into your hectic round of holiday preparations. An old friend might bring a new friend into your life. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Pace yourself in meeting holiday pressures and workplace demands to avoid winding up with a frayed temper and a Scorpian stinger that lashes out at puzzled kith, kin and colleagues. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A financial matter requires close attention. Also, news from a trusted source provides the means to help sort out a long-standing state of confusion and put it into perspective. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good time to reinforce family ties. Make it a priority to assess and resolve all outstanding problems. Start the upcoming holiday season with a full measure of love. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Don’t be pressured into a so-called solid-gold investment. Wait until the holiday distractions are over. Then take a harder look at it. You might find that the “gold” is starting to flake off. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A former friend might be trying to heal the breach between you by using a mutual friend as an intermediary. Best advice: Keep an open mind despite any lingering bad feelings. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of saying the right thing at the right time. Your friendships are deep and lasting. LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

APPRECIATING FRUITCAKE: A much-maligned holiday staple Certain foods are synonymous with the holiday season. Thanksgiving turkey. Holiday cookies. Fruitcake. While those first two make mouths water. fruitcake rarely inspires stomachs to rumble in anticipation. But fruitcake is more than just something to go ignored on holiday serving tables. Fruitcake can be chewy, crunchy and wholesomely rich, making it something holiday hosts will be proud to serve to their holiday guests, who might just come away with a whole new appreciation for fruitcake.

Pearl Harbor Remembered with Luncheon & Entertainment By Amanda Dudek

On December 7th, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy and Air Force attacked American forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This attack marked the entry of the United States into WWII and is the date that officially became Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day nearly 53 years later in 1994. The Wayland American Legion, Post 402 and its Commander, Kevin Mark, believe deeply that it is important to honor the veterans who served in WWII as well as all United States veterans, active-duty military members and reservists all year long and especially on days like Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Therefore, to remember our fallen soldiers and honor our living ones, the Wayland American Legion, Post 402, is hosting its 4th annual Veterans Appreciation Luncheon & Dance on Sunday, December 9th with doors opening at 1:00pm and music from 2:00-5:00pm. This event is free of charge for veterans and current military members and reservists and just $7 for non-military guests. “We’re doing this for the veterans, the troops and the community, not as a fundraiser,” Commander Mark explains. During the luncheon, guests will be served a full meal, including appetizers, lunches and desserts. No one should leave hungry! A cash bar will also be available for those guests who are so inclined. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Southern Tier All Star Jazz Band from 2:00-5:00pm. The band will feature Big Band Music and songs from the 30s, 40s and 50s, including old Army songs and some pieces that are quite moving. “People from all different age groups enjoy

our event,” says Commander Kevin Mark. “Young people and couples enjoy it, and several of them also like to bring their parents and grandparents to hear songs from their youth.” Commander Mark said he believes it can be difficult for older generations to find places to go where they can hear their music these days and this event provides a great opportunity to gather together and do just that. This vintage USO-style entertainment wouldn’t be complete without its special guests all the way from New York City: The American Bombshells Dancing Girls. “The girls dress up in the old-style military outfits and like for the USO,” says Commander Mark. There will also be a Christmas tree and gift packages for the package drive sent out for troop support, giving the event a bit of a “Christmassy” tone. Visitors will be encouraged to remember our veterans and troops this holiday season. In the spirit of the holidays, there will be some caroling, just a few songs to kick off the season. “It’s been a great success in the past,” Commander Kevin Mark assures. “After each event, we hear people say, ‘I wish I’d have been there.’ Don’t wish; be there!”

Great gifts for beloved seniors By the time they reach senior status, many adults have amassed a ton of stuff along with their irreplaceable knowledge. Come their golden years, grandparents and other aging loved ones probably don’t need much in the way of material possessions, which can make it challenging to find them holiday gifts. Finding great gifts for seniors may take a little more effort, but with these ideas at the ready, it’s likely gift-givers can make this holiday merry for everyone on their shopping lists. Family photo memories Many seniors love to talk about their life histories. What better way to be the catalyst for conversation than to create a photo album that chronicles their lives? Photos can be included alongside historical documents, such as old school projects, military discharge papers, awards, and even genealogical information. Photo puzzles, photo calendars and any home decor with a photo printed on it are variations on this theme. Assistance gifts Seniors want to remain as independent as possible. By giving items that help them do just that, you can bring smiles to their faces. One idea is motion-sensing light switches and fixtures. If and when nature calls in the middle of the night, hallways or bathrooms can be illuminated effortlessly. Shower and bathroom grab bars are another idea. These provide extra security and stability when getting in and out of the shower or when using the toilet. For seniors who just need a little extra reach, a grab tool can easily snag packages from a top shelf or pick up items that may have dropped to the floor, eliminating bending or straining. Practical technology Seniors may not be as immersed in technology as young people, but they purchase their share of gadgets and increasingly rely on tech to

get through the day. To free up more time for rest and relaxation,

invest in an iRobot Roomba Robot Vacuum. This simple device will clean floors easily, moving from room to room without the need for a bulky canister or upright vacuum. Consider an easy-to-use tablet, preloaded with handy applications. Grandparents can use video chatting to keep in touch with grandchildren living across the country. Easily refill prescription medication with a pharmacy app just a click away. Stream favorite movies or channels through video streaming sites, like Netflix or Amazon Prime. Tablets tend to be lightweight, portable and user-friendly. Personal care

Even independent seniors may benefit from a little extra companionship and assistance when family members are not able to make frequent visits. Hiring a visiting care worker, who can do everything from organizing pills to making dinner to tackling some laundry, can provide the help seniors need with their daily errands. Seniors are a thriving and growing demographic. It may seem challenging to purchase gifts for older loved ones, but with a little know-how, it’s easy to find the right present.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE Christmas trees are symbols of the holiday season and the spirit of giving that the season champions. Choosing and decorating a Christmas tree is a tradition for many families, and depending on the trees they choose, families may have some work to do to keep their trees glowing all season long. Artificial Christmas trees require little, if any, maintenance. But live Christmas trees, which some people feel are more authentic and welcoming than their artificial counterparts, require daily maintenance. In addition to supplying the tree with water at least once per day, live Christmas tree owners can take steps to prolong the life of their trees.

Balsam fir is a beautiful pyramidal tree with short, flat, long-lasting, aromatic needles. Balsam fir and Fraser fir have many similar characteristics and some botanists consider them extensions of the same species. Their geographic ranges do not overlap and the Balsam fir has to have cold winters and cool summers. Balsam fir has a nice, dark green color and very fragrant. The tree was named for the balsam or resin found in blisters on bark and which was used to treat wounds in Civil War.

FOUR IDEAS FOR HEALTH CARE PLANNING IN RETIREMENT (NAPSI)—The Employee Benefit Research Institute estimates that a typical 65-year-old couple will spend a total of $265,000 in health care costs over the remainder of their lives. This staggering amount of money has the potential to derail even the best-laid retirement plans. Vanguard and Mercer recently developed a new framework, “Planning for Health Care Costs in Retirement,” that identifies practical tips for forecasting your health care expenses. Here are four top ideas: 1. Personalize health care costs. Start by understanding how your health history and current health status will influence expenses. Even your geographic location, marital status and age at retirement will impact your forecasts. 2. Plan for long-term care. This is a tough one to assess because half of retirees won’t even incur these costs, but on the other end of the spectrum, 15 percent of retirees will spend more than $250,000. Consider potential long-term care options, such as unpaid care from family and less-expensive available facilities. 3. Create a hedge in your budget for other expenses. Research shows that retirement spending in virtually all categories other than health care tends to decline with age. By forecasting steady spending in other expense areas, you may create a buffer in your budget to deal with rising health care expenses.

Drain onions well; pat dry.

4. Forecast costs in annual spending. There are so many variables involved in estimating health care costs in retirement that trying to plan around a total lifetime budget can be overwhelming. Experts recommend that you focus on annual spending plans instead, provided that you understand costs will rise as you age.

Spray shallow, oven-proof dish (34-cup size) with nonstick cooking spray. Place onions in dish. Press with spatula to flatten and crush.

For seniors who are struggling to find cash in their retirement budgets to offset unexpected health care expenses, it may be a good idea to take stock right now of all your assets. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy.

Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon tomatoes, garlic, 2 tablespoons basil and black pepper, to taste. Drizzle with 1/2 tablespoon oil.

You should review your life insurance policy from time to time and determine whether or not it’s still needed. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000.

Heat oven to 350 F.

Cut goat cheese into 6-8 rounds. Arrange over onion mixture. Sprinkle with remaining tomatoes; drizzle with remaining oil. Sprinkle with herb seasoning, if desired. Bake uncovered 20-30 minutes, or until cheese is soft and mixture is bubbly. Sprinkle with remaining basil. Serve warm with crackers, flatbread or pita chips, if desired.

If you own a life insurance policy you no longer need or can afford, you may be able to generate immediate cash to pay your health care expenses by selling that policy for immediate cash. To learn more about life settlements, visit www.LISA.org or call the LISA office today at 888-921-3793.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

Your store makes me upset. I am told I need to use an app to find things, and I'm challenged when it comes to my smart phone. I'm an older lady, that has certain challenges anyhow. You think good customer service is out of style, and I must use an app to find things. What happened to your employees taking time to help me and others for that matter? Is being nice and helping people find things out of style at your store, so you just throw me under the bus because I'm unable to use the technology? I'm tired of asking your employees where things are just to be thrown a blank stare and told, "I don't know" while making no move to help me. Is

Say thank you to the drivers, it's a difficult job driving the big yellow machine and keeping order on the bus.

Thank you, Mayor Tom Freeman, for helping an old neighbor. We appreciated your help. It was so thoughtful of you to take the time and talk to the volunteers at the Polling stations to find out where my correct Voting location was. Your act of kindness touched our hearts. Dave & daughter

The right-to-farm does not give farmers the right to pollute the soil, water or air. I realize we depend on farmers for our food but they must live on the land, drink the water and breath the air too! And many people who live in the country have been there a long time. (There's one local farm that boasts about being in business since the early 1800s; how many cows did they have then?!) Whoever stole the A-Frame sign advertising the Dec. 8th (local town) Scouts Craft Show on the

corner of (local roads) Gas Station this past weekend, you should be ashamed of yourself. The sign cost the scouts over $70 to make. This event is a fundraiser for the Scouts and the proceeds go directly to individual scouts to help pay for summer camp as well as other Scouting expenses. You stole from every (local town) Boy Scout and the volunteers who help provide the Scouting program for them. It is hard for me to imagine what your motivation would be for trying to hurt a young man's chance at attending summer Scout camp-Have a change of heart and return the sign no questions asked. On behalf of the (local town) Boy Scout Troop, I wish you a Merry Christmas.

CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON

TRAVIS WESTER

Decked out in tinsel, lights, ornaments, and garland, Christmas trees are enduring symbols of the holiday season that boast a rich history.

Evergreen trees have been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits.

STAY SAFE WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS Employ the buddy system. When stringing lights, always work with at least one other person. This makes it safe for homeowners who must climb ladders to string lights on especially tall trees and/or on their home exteriors.

Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations. In the sixteenth century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky. While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada.

Change is the law of life. And those w ho look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future. - John F. Kennedy

“Goodwill is earned by many acts; it can be lost by one…”

~ Duncan Stuart Goodwill is priceless. It can exist between individuals, such as neighbors and friends. A company needs the goodwill of those with whom the company does business. When goodwill exists, each party regards the other in a friendly way. Every action is assumed to be motivated by good intentions. Goodwill is built gradually by a long series of transactions in an atmosphere of trust and friendship. A single act which betrays a confidence or takes an unfair advantage can shatter a relationship which has been built slowly over a long period. We believe that a funeral ceremony should be a beautiful experience, helping the bereaved in their first step towards adjustment to their loss. Call us first.

DEEPER UNDERSTANDING If you have ever wondered where the term “six feet under” came from, its origination can be traced to the Great Plague of London in 1665, when 20 percent of the city’s population succumbed to the Bubonic plague. In the belief that burying the dead a safe distance underground could help stop the spread of disease, The Lord Mayor of London mandated that all graves be dug a minimum of six feet deep. However, because dead bodies were never found to spread the plague to the living, the law was eventually overturned in England and its colonies. It was later reinstated in order to discourage grave robbing. Burial laws now vary from state to state. The earliest human burial dates back 100,000 years making it one of the longest-lived and most widespread of traditions. We have the deepest respect for this traditional practice. If you are interested in learning more about the burial services we offer, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “The idea is not to live forever but to create something that will.” ~ Andy Warhol

Check tire pressure. Right before you pack up the car to hit the open road, check each of your tires ’ pressure, making sure the pressure in each tire is at the level recommended in your ow ner’s manual. Inflating tires to the proper pressure takes just a minute or so, but that minute can protect you and your passengers w hile also saving you money at the filling station.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

R•E•S•P•I•T•E “Respite: Care for Caregivers” Respite – the chance to take a breather, the opportunity to reenergize – is as important as any other item on your caregiver’s to-do list. People think of respite as a luxury, but considering caregivers’ increased risk for health issues from chronic stress, those risks are a lot costlier than some time away to recharge. Respite is the key to your own well-being. Respite protects your own health, strengthens family relationships, prevents burn-out and allows your loved one to stay at home up to three times longer. No wonder respite is one of the most frequently requested support services for family caregivers. Respite can be provided in-home or away from home. There are several options for respite care in Livingston County, including in-home care, adult day programs and social programs. Social day programs for those with memory loss are located in: Mt. Morris, Geneseo and Dansville. Out of home respite care provides caregivers and care recipients with a much different experience than in-home respite. It allows care recipients to interact socially and engage physically. For more information about respite options, contact the Caregiver Resource Center at Noyes: 335-4358 or caregiver@noyeshealth.org.

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT Be patient. Lifting too much weight or pushing yourself too hard on the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine will increase your risk of injury. This is especially true for men and women working out for the first time or after lengthy stretches of inactivity. Men and women who are elderly, inactive and/ or overweight are likely to suffer from poor balance because their muscles are weak. Those muscles can be strengthened over time, but remain patient and stick to light weight during initial workouts so lack of balance does not lead to pain or injury. Take the same approach with aerobic exercise to prevent muscle strains and pulls. Increase weight and the intensity of cardiovascular exercises as muscles gradually strengthen and become accustomed to exercise.

visionsource-livingstoneyecare.com GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Exercise in the great outdoors. Fitness enthusiasts can reduce their energy consumption by exercising outdoors whenever possible. Replace running in place on a treadmill with running through a park or on a beach outside. Men and women who work out in their homes can take the free weights outdoors to the backyard on nice days, allowing Mother Nature instead of the electric company to supply the lighting.

Cold therapy, sometimes referred to as “cryotherapy,” can relieve pain associated with inflammation that has developed recently. Cold can help numb tissues and relieve muscle spasms and can also be used to alleviate pain associated with injuries. The Merck Manual notes that ice bags or cold packs can be used to apply cold. In addition, fluids that cool by evaporation, including ethyl chloride, may be applied topically. Some medicines may interact with ethyl chloride spray, so inflammation sufferers should consult their physicians before applying such sprays. According to the Cleveland Clinic, ice can be used to calm flare-ups and numb pain associated with chronic, inflammatory arthritis. Ice also can ease inflammation and numb pain linked to pulled muscles or injured tendons. Pain and inflammation resulting from the stretching or tearing of ligaments in the joints may also be eased by applying ice to the affected area.

Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Leg Swelling Likely Not Due to Alcohol --DEAR DR. ROACH: What effect, if any, does alcohol consumption have on swelling in the legs, ankles and feet? I drink only when I go out for dinner or have guests, typically a cocktail and a glass of wine; no swelling in those instances. However, I noticed that after a few days on vacation, when I drank more than two glasses of wine every night, my lower legs, ankles and feet began to swell. Once I returned home and resumed no daily alcohol consumption, the swelling abated. So, is there a connection? -- B.A. ANSWER: The physiology of alcohol is complex, with potentially adverse effects on the heart, the liver and on secretion of anti-diuretic hormone. All of these can affect swelling. However, it is entirely possible, and probably more likely, that it is a combination of travel and increased sodium intake that is responsible for your most recent swelling. Even in healthy young volunteers, alcohol immediately reduces the ability of the heart to squeeze out blood. Usually the heart returns to normal after the alcohol is metabolized, but in some people, the heart dilates over time, resulting in heart failure (swelling in the feet has many causes, but heart failure is one of the biggest concerns). In the liver, longstanding alcohol use affects the liver’s ability to synthesize proteins. Reduced levels of the blood protein albumin also might cause leg swelling. Both heart and liver effects are very mild except in people who already have disease of these organs. The role of vasopressin, also called anti-diuretic hormone, is complex. Initial inhibition of ADH leads to an increase in urine production, then an increased level of the hormone, which can lead to water and salt retention and swelling. Even though there are at least three ways alcohol can lead to or worsen edema, it is likely that it’s simply swelling from sitting and standing too much, which commonly occurs in travel, combined with a greater sodium intake from eating out at restaurants. Sodium content at many restaurants is much higher than if you prepare your own food.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been dealing with a problem for a very long time. I’d like to have someone tell me how to stop my eyes from tearing and my nose from running every time I go out in the cold weather. I’ve been given pills (Claritin and Benadryl) and sprays (Nasacort, Beconase), and although they help me breathe better, I still fill up with tears and mucus. I’d like to know if you’ve ever run across these symptoms. -- S.R.M. ANSWER: These symptoms are not only common, they are nearly universal. One of the body’s protections against cold weather is to increase fluid flow to the eyes and nose, as the cold, dry air evaporates their protective moisture. Almost everybody has had the experience of a runny nose after being out in the cold, especially when first coming into a warm room. In some people, the normal response is so strong that it becomes very annoying. It’s a type of nonallergic vasomotor rhinitis. I have had frequent success in prescribing nasal antihistamines, such as azelastine, or an anticholinergic drug like ipratropium, if the treatments you have tried haven’t worked. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Share some cooking duties. Another way to simplify cooking for a crowd is to invite guests to bring along a side dish or dessert. Guests who live nearby can make something in advance of the big meal, while hosts can hand over their kitchens to overnight guests who express a willingness to contribute their own homecooked dish to the party. Sharing the cooking duties gives hosts more time to connect with friends and family and serves as a great way to plan the menu in advance.

ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS? The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact. While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that. SPORTS QUIZ By Chris Richcreek 1. WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.
