SAY “I LOVE YOU” WITH MUSIC Music can express many emotions, be a source of comfort and encouragement or simply induce a peaceful state of mind. For those looking to express their love for a special someone, songs with or without lyrics can help convey such feelings. Music lovers may greatly appreciate songs chosen especially for them in honor of Valentine’s Day. Therefore, as a heart-warming gift, curate a special selection of songs that can be gifted to a loved one. Even though it’s an inexpensive way to show you care, the meaning behind the gift can be profound. While “mix tapes” of the 1990s may have fallen out of favor, individuals who subscribe to streaming music services can do something similar by establishing custom playlists. Look to options such as Pandora, Amazon Music, and Spotify for inspiration.

CHOOSE WISELY IN SELECTING VALENTINE GIFTS Skip the gas station flowers, candy or last-minute gifts. Valentine’s Day is a time to show you care. If you’ve left gifting to the last minute, you may make the situation worse by giving something impersonal you picked up on an errand. If you forgot or ran out of time, simply admit you goofed or time got away from you. Then ask your sweetheart what he or she wants and go shopping together.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS (NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road.

CORBY’S COLLISION

1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents.

proudly servicing the area for 76 years.

2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags.

5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Doing something nice for others is typical of the generous Arian. But be prepared for some jealous types who might try to question one of your more recent acts of kindness. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re eager to take on new responsibilities. But before you do, you might want to check out exactly what would be required of you so that you don’t face any “surprises” later. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It might be best to put off an important decision until a fluctuating situation becomes more stable. Recently received news could help resolve a long-standing family matter. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) If you still have a problem getting that information gap closed, you might consider asking a higher authority to resolve the matter, leaving you free to move on to another project. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A family matter needs to be dealt with at the start of the week. Once it’s resolved, the Big Cat can devote more attention to that new opportunity that seems to hold so much potential. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Pay attention to those niggling doubts. They could be warning you not to make any major decisions until you’ve checked them out -- especially where money matters might be involved. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business venture might need more of your attention than you are able to provide. Consider asking a trusted friend or family member to help you work through this time crunch. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A more-positive aspect helps you get a clearer focus on how to handle your time so that you can deal with several responsibilities that are just now showing up on your schedule. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A very close friend (you know who that is!) has advice that could help you work through a confusing situation. So put your pride aside and ask for it. You’ll be glad you did. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace situation could turn a bit tense. The best way to handle it is to confront it and deal with it openly. Doing so can help reveal the underlying reasons for the problem. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A colleague’s remarks appear to be especially cutting. But don’t waste your time or your energy trying to deal with the situation. You have more important things to do. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Support for your work comes as a surprise from someone you thought was critical or, at least, indifferent. Your spouse or partner has big plans for the weekend. BORN THIS WEEK: Your spiritual strength often acts as an inspiration to help others make decisions about their lives. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Come Valentine’s Day, candy, flowers and other gifts are exchanged between sweethearts in one of the many traditions associated with the holiday. The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the anniversary of his death. Others believe it was the Christian church’s way of Christianizing the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is now celebrated by millions and is one of the retail industry’s most lucrative shopping holidays.

FLU-FIGHTING FACTS (NAPS)—The flu is nothing to sneeze at. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza has resulted in between 9.2 million and 35.6 million illnesses annually since 2010. The best way to stay out of such statistics, the CDC says, is for everyone who is eligible and at least 6 months old to get a flu shot as soon as the vaccine becomes available. To help, all CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations have the vaccine available seven days a week with no appointment needed. Study Shows That may be just as well, since the annual survey, conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of CVS Pharmacy [1], found that two-thirds of those surveyed get a flu vaccine every year or plan to get one this year, a 5 percent increase from last year. One reason so many are flocking to get the shot is the knowledge of last year’s flu season—which according to the CDC had flu levels that were the highest observed since 2009. Twenty-two percent of those surveyed[2] say that knowledge of last year’s severe flu season makes them more likely to get a flu shot this year. On a similar note, among the 27 percent of parents of children under 18 whose child did not get the flu vaccine last year, 26 percent say they are more likely to get their child vaccinated this year after learning about the notably high flu levels during last year’s flu season. The percentage who get vaccinated at a pharmacy stayed at 22 percent, but the percentage of employed adults who get vaccinated at their workplace fell from 22 percent to 15 percent while those who got vaccinated by a health care professional rose from 44 percent to 48 percent. The survey also found that doctors’ opinions (39 percent), where insurance is accepted (38 percent), and convenience (33 percent) rank among the top three factors in determining where to go for the shot. The flu vaccine is a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act, so it’s fully covered and available at no cost through most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B. Nurse’s Advice “Surprising to many, it can actually take up to two weeks for the flu vaccine to build immunity,” explained Angela Patterson, Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer at MinuteClinic. “Because of this, CVS Pharmacy recommends patients get their flu shot as soon as the vaccine becomes available to ensure patients are the most protected before flu season peaks. Furthermore, influenza strains tend to change each year, so it’s very important to get vaccinated annually to make sure you are protected.” What Else You Can Do Here are four suggestions: 1. Stay home if you’re sick. The survey found that two out of three respondents would still go to work if they had flulike symptoms. In fact, flulike symptoms haven’t stopped some people from going out in public in general: • 28 percent have gone to the supermarket • 12 percent have picked up a child from school or day care • 10 percent have taken public transportation. 2. Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based cleansing gel. 3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. 4. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs. Learn More: Consumers can visit www.CVS.com and www.MinuteClinic. com for further information and to find a nearby pharmacy or clinic. Customers get a $5 off $25 coupon when they get the shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic. [1] Survey was conducted in the United States by The Harris Poll on July 12-16, 2018, among 2,020 adults ages 18 and older. [2] U.S. adults surveyed who did not get a flu shot last year.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 71 years old, stand 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weigh 325 pounds. The “average” person is half my size, yet when I get medication for various ailments (e.g., gout, pain, flu shots, etc.) I get the standard dose. I assume I have more physical mass as well as a larger blood supply, which leads me to the conclusion that I am receiving a smaller concentration of medicine than the typical patient. Am I correct? -- M.K. ANSWER: All medicines have concentrations at which they work optimally. Too low a dose and they aren’t effective, and too high a dose increases risk of toxicity. Some drugs have a very small range that’s both effective and nontoxic, and these are referred to as having a “narrow toxic to therapeutic ratio.” Others have a very large range where they are effective and nontoxic, such as most over-the-counter pain medicines and flu shots. Penicillin has a very wide toxic to therapeutic ratio, but I use that example precisely because some people will have an allergic reaction. There is no drug -- prescribed, over-the-counter or supplement -that is either perfectly safe while being effective, or perfectly effective while being safe, for every person. The concentration of the drug in the appropriate area of the body (sometimes blood, sometimes the affected organ, sometimes urine) may depend on the dose as well as your characteristics. Despite being much larger than average, your blood volume is probably only a little above the average, since the increased bone mass, muscle mass and, in most people your size, fat mass are disproportionate to the blood. Some medicines go to the blood, others to “lean body mass” and still others preferentially to fat. So while you are correct that you are getting a smaller concentration of medicine, that’s still OK most of the time. For medications that need to be dosed precisely, those with a narrow toxic to therapeutic ratio (such as some antibiotics, heart medication and chemotherapy), the dosing is based on height, weight, age and sometimes kidney and liver function. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 80 years old, in good health with no cancer in the family. Up to now, I have always had regular Pap smears and mammograms. Now I am aware that there are different thoughts as to whether those tests are needed at my age. What is your advice? -- J.G. ANSWER: For Pap smears, there is very good evidence that women who have never had any problems with their Pap smears by age 65 are very unlikely to ever develop any, and I agree with the recommendation by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force to stop them at age 65. Mammograms are more controversial, but my personal practice is to continue to recommend them for most women until about age 75. I stop recommending mammograms to women when they have an underlying medical condition that makes it unlikely that they will receive benefit from continued screening. Deciding when that is takes some experience and a lot of discussion with the patient and sometimes her family. There is no absolute age cutoff for mammograms, and getting a mammogram on a healthy 80-year-old might make sense. Getting a mammogram on a woman with incurable lung cancer, for example, does not. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Bella’s Bumbas Gives Joy & Mobility to Over 670 Children Around the Globe by Amanda Dudek etirement may be a chance to relax, but Marty Parzynski and his wife Rebecca Orr have no intention of slowing down. Instead, their lives of this Webster couple took a dramatic turn when their great niece, Bella, was born with Spina Bifida in June 2015. “We were surprised. No one knew in vitro,” said Orr. “As she grew, the doctors saw no movement in her legs. She was paralyzed.” As Bella continued to grow, her struggle became more apparent. “She was frustrated because she couldn’t crawl,” Parzynski recalled. “When other babies would crawl away, she couldn’t follow.” It was Bella’s heartbreaking struggle that would become Parzynski and Orr’s inspiration. Rebecca Orr began to believe there must be something she and Marty could do to help baby Bella be more mobile. She searched the internet and came across a blueprint for a softshell baby seat wheelchair. She showed the blueprint to her husband. “I worked it out,” says Parzynski. “I used a softshell infant support seat, 12-inch bicycle tires and constructed the whole chair in about three hours.” Bella was nearly a year old when her great aunt and uncle gave her this new mobility chair, and her reaction was nothing short of incredible. “Almost immediately, we saw what it did for her,” said Parzynski. “Her personality came out. Her happiness came out. We also saw what it did for her parents to see their little girl moving on her own. We couldn’t help but think, ëWhat about the others?’” Orr and Parzynski decided to test the waters. “We put our chair out on Facebook,” said Orr. “People began asking for them.” “We thought maybe we would make 20-30 of these chairs,” Parzynski chimed in. “But requests kept coming in. We were scrounging for parts. Around the 10th chair, we established Bella’s Bumbas as a nonprofit in May 2017. We have now made 676 chairs, and it hasn’t been two years yet!” Parzynski explained that the need is great. Wheelchairs for children ages infant to five years old are often not covered by insurance as they are not considered necessary. Commercially, a very small child’s wheelchair typically starts around $800. “We don’t charge for our chairs,” said Parzynski. “Families with special needs children are very often strapped financially already. We just ask people to pay the shipping.” “Sometimes, shipping is even to great a cost,” added Orr. “We ship all over the United States, and we have shipped chairs to 26 countries worldwide as awareness continues to spread. Some families, when they request a chair, express that they cannot afford the shipping, and within days, someone will donate for just the shipping. People do fundraisers just for shipping. It’s incredible.” As Parzynski’s mobility chairs, Bella’s Bumbas, are making their way into more and more homes and countries, others are also taking up the cause. “We have two designated volunteers in other countries now: one in Indonesia and one in Malaysia,” said Orr. “Wahyu Widayati, our Indonesian volunteer, made a presentation to the local Rotary and gained approval for half the shipping cost for 10 chairs to Indonesia.” Parzynski shared another story in which, about a year ago, a family in Germany needed a chair, but the cost of shipping was prohibitive. So, the child’s grandfather asked if he could make the chair himself. Parzynski and Orr sent the blueprints and notes back and forth via the internet, and the man was able to build the chair on his own. Now, he has established a similar nonprofit in Germany called Lina’s Rollis, and that nonprofit is also filling requests for mobility chairs. As Parzynski and Orr are approached with the new challenges of families with children in need, Parzynski continues to develop new adaptations, and the chairs continue to evolve. “We started out with a softshell model,” said Parzynski. “We moved onto a hardshell and made a few different sizes. We now have 6 different models. I have recently invented a chair that can be moved and steered with one hand. I’ve created extensions so that they chair can be used longer. We also make little trailers.” Parsynski described a chair request for a child with Caudal Regression for which the child’s grandmother sent in a special seat to be crafted into a mobility chair. Since then, Parzynski has received more requests and created more of these chairs. While every child and chair are memorable, there is one child that quickly came to both Parzynski’s and Orr’s minds: Brooklyn. “I think Brooklyn stands out because her chair was our first challenge,” said Parzynski. “Brooklyn was on oxygen and feed pumps. She couldn’t be detached from them. So, we created a chair with a longer base and a basket on the back to hold these necessary items. Then, she was able to just move around on her own.” Parzynski and Orr explain that It means so much to these children to be able to move for themselves. They are so excited. For the parents, it is so often the little things like knocking things over and playing hide and seek, things most people take for granted, that are so meaningful. Parzynski mentioned a dad who sent Bella’s Bumbas a thank you note because it was the first time his son was able to participate on an Easter egg hunt for himself. Even with the outpouring of gratitude and being on CBS, Channel 8’s Extraordinary People, Spectrum Live in the Morning and a recent interview by KLOVE, Parzynski and Orr remain humble. “We just made a device for

Up and moving in her Bumba!

Bella’s Bumbas Founders Marty Parzynski & Rebecca Orr

mobility, that’s all, but here’s what started to happen. Bella was told she would never walk, now she is looking at a walker because her upper body has become so strong using her chair. Children on oxygen are seeing decreased dependency at times because they have built up their lung capacity,” said Parzynski, and he admits they couldn’t do it alone. “We are so grateful for those who volunteer with us.” He introduced George who claims his wife Carol left him on the doorstep, but Orr says George and Carol never miss an event, Dee one of Parzynski’s fellow Xerox retirees who says he was so impressed with Bella’s Bumbas that he is once again working with Parzynski who he says is an engineering genius, Spencer who belongs to the Webster Rotary and was so impressed with Parzynski and Orr’s presentation that he decided to volunteer himself, also Bonnie who helps with packaging the chairs and Laurel, a niece who is Bella’s Bumbas acting secretary. Going forward, Parzynski and Orr see a need for more volunteers and greater support. “We need to train volunteers to answer emails, work with families to determine what their needs are, handle paperwork, complete shipping and things like that,” said Orr. “We are working on this project 7 days a week and putting in over 40 hours.” Parzynski added, “At this point, we are looking for one or more corporate sponsors. Until now, we have been completely funded by donations and fundraisers. We need some means of support as we continue this very important work.” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? substitute “holiday”. By so doing, you wouldn’t need to then wait until December 26 to use the word in your “afterChristmas” sales. Thanks, and Merry Christmas

A suggestion to area merchants: At this glorious time of year, shoppers crowd your stores and businesses to purchase gifts for all special holidays in the month of December. In your advertisements, if you choose to use symbols like Santa, Elves, Decorated Wreaths and Trees, etc. … all exclusive to Christmas....kindly do not

Is anybody upset about a recent change to our [local restaurant] here in our [local town]? The beautiful landscaping was destroyed and the building was made to have a cold appearance. Our [local town] certainly deserved better than this monstrosity. Recently my friend and I went to lunch at a small restaurant in our [local town]. The room was crowded, and we were all very close. In came a woman with a severe bronchial infection and sat

at the table right next to us. She proceeded to cough her way through the entire lunch, disregarding all the patrons around her. Both of us now have severe colds. Ironically, we are both infectious disease nurses. Please stay home and keep your germs to yourself. To the driver of a purple vehicle: Slow down before you kill someone! After the town hall meeting addressing public water access, I left disgusted at my “neighbors” and local farmer’s negative and uninformed opinions. With climate changing, many residential wells don’t produce water like they used to. Can the farm’s water be next? Then what? Public water causes autism due

to medical waste in the lakes? Now there’s a real reason to be against it. The air we breathe is polluted so stop breathing. If you prefer your washed clothes to be gray or dingy or nasty teeth due to drinking your well water so be it. I don’t. My well is good, but I want better! I want my neighbors’ water to be better! I would gladly give up vices to help my neighbor. “Move back to the city” What a GREAT answer! It may not cost you as much if you do your homework. I am so upset that someone can hit my car and take off without reporting it or leaving a note. They had to know they hit my car because the bumper and the hatchback is dented; also, the taillight was broken. I know that accidents happen, but to just leave is totally WRONG!

Brighter Side The Memorial Day Detachment # 468 of the Marine Corps League would like to thank everyone who donated to the Toys for Tots campaign this year. The generosity of everyone who donated or provided a space for our collection boxes enabled us to distribute over 6200 toys to children who might otherwise not have received any toys for Christmas. We appreciate the agencies and individuals who helped to distribute the toys to the individuals who were in need. We look forward to working with everyone again next year. Big thank you to a worker at Advantage Auto Stores who changed my plates for

me at no charge. Having a small infant and a husband away on business, this act of kindness really meant a lot to me. We went to KRONY’S on Jan. 4th. My family and I ordered pizza, which is always YUMMY! We decided to try Stromboli’s and must say that they were EXCEPTIONAL! Next time, I will request more ricotta, and I’m sure they will accommodate my needs, because when you go to Krony’s, they go out of their way to make your dining experience a pleasant one. Warning Signs Your Aging Parents Need More Help (NAPS)—Home care agencies often see a surge in calls in late December and early January. Why? Many grown children head home for the holidays and notice their aging parents need some help. Here are ways to tell: Take The Sniff Test - Breathe in that holiday hug. If you notice unclean clothes or an uncharacteristic body odor, that could signal that a parent is having trouble bathing, maintaining personal hygiene or keeping up with household chores such as laundry. Next, follow your nose to the kitchen. Open the fridge. You’ll notice pretty quickly if there’s spoiled food—but your parents may not. The sense of smell diminishes with age, expecially after 70. Many seniors can’t detect unpleasant odors that would normally tell them it’s time to toss last week’s meat loaf. If the sniff test reveals some olfactory oddities, it might not just be “normal aging.” Diminished sense of smell can be an early indicator of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. If you sense something isn’t quite right, help Mom or Dad to set up a doctor’s visit to see if there’s something else going on. Have A Look Around - Your childhood home may look the same as ever—but it may not work as well for older adults. As people age, their environment typically needs simple upgrades to keep them safe. You can significantly reduce fall risks by taping down throw rugs, removing extra furniture, securing electrical cords out of pathways and adding grab bars in the bathroom. Pay attention to clutter as well. Stacks of unopened mail, broken appliances or drooping houseplants may also signal a need for help. Being unable to manage everyday activities can be a symptom of depression or of cognitive impairment, which often presents like depression. If you see any of the above warning signs, you may want to arrange for your parent to see a doctor and for family members or professional caregivers to stop by and help with projects and chores. Just knowing your parents have help and resources can relieve worry, both yours and theirs. Listen Up - Is the TV or radio volume blaring? Are conversations repeated? Does Mom keep asking “what?” or just smiling and nodding instead of participating? Don’t brush it off. Difficulty following conversations may be a sign of hearing loss, cognitive impairment or both. Seniors who begin losing their hearing are at greater risk of developing dementia over time since hearing is a brain function. Sometimes, hearing aids stimulate the sounds needed for the brain to restore organization and correctly process sounds. Making Sense Of Your Senses - Talking to parents about warning signs you’ve noticed isn’t fun. But do it anyway. Let them know you want to be involved to help them stay independent for as long as possible. Even if you live far away there’s a lot you can do, such as scheduling appointments and finding help with transportation, chores and projects. Talk to nearby family members about how they can help out or set up a visit with a home care agency that can provide ongoing support. Fear of losing independence keeps a lot of seniors tight lipped.

Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. WRITING YOUR OWN LAST WILL & TESTAMENT Although it is often preferable to consult with a local estateplanning attorney who understands the language and legalities surrounding a will, it is also possible to write a will yourself. There are forms that can be purchased from office-supply stores, or a will can be prepared online by answering questions and then generating a form to print. The will also can be typed or handwritten. Handwritten wills are called holographic wills and may not be recognized unless written during an emergency situation, such as a fatal illness. Laws regarding wills vary based on where you live. Therefore, learn the legalities before preparing a will so you will have a document that holds up in a court of law and can be executed to your desires.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

NEVER FORGET “Men hate those to whom they have to lie…”

~ Victor Hugo

Why does anyone ever lie? The confidence man and other unscrupulous people tell lies to dupe their victims. Others may lie because the truth could be an admission of guilt. Still others lie because they do not want to hurt someone else’s feelings. Where telling the truth could mean humiliation and punishment, it takes character to avoid resorting to a lie. We hate the ones to whom we have to lie because they’re in a position to force us to do something for which we hate ourselves. Our goal should be to live in such a way as to eliminate any situation where a lie is ever necessary. Thoughtful families select a funeral director as they do a doctor or attorney. We would welcome a “get-acquainted” visit by you, in our office or in your home. Call us to schedule an appointment.

Families of eligible U.S. military veterans can request funeral honors through their funeral director, who will contact the appropriate military service to arrange for the honors detail. Free of charge, the rendering of military funeral honors for an eligible veteran is mandated by law. An honor guard detail for the burial of an eligible veteran consists of not less than two members of the Armed Forces. Eligibility is available to military members on active duty or in the selected reserve, former military members who served on active duty and departed under honorable conditions, and former military members who completed at least one term of enlistment or period of initial obligated service in the reserves and departed under honorable conditions. We are deeply committed to providing families with exceptional veterans services and can assist you in securing military burial benefits. When it comes time for you to make arrangements for the veteran in your life, know that our staff is both qualified and committed to providing them with the military honors they deserve. If you are interested in learning more about the burial services we offer, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER The LCWSA Consolidated Systems Public Water Supply (PWS ID NY2501019) Has Levels of Total Trihalomethanes Above Drinking Water Standards Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Test results taken on November 14, 2018 show that our system exceeded the standard or maximum contaminant level (MCL), for Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM). The standard for TTHM is 80 micrograms per liter (mg/I). The average level of TTHM over the last year was 82.25 mg/I. A complete version of the public notification has been posted on-line at: http://www.co.livingston.state.ny.us/DocumentCenter/View/4947 A hardcopy of the public notification is available by contacting the Livingston County Water & Sewer Authority (LCWSA) at (585)346-3523. LCWSA is working diligently with the Livingston County Department of Health to address this violation. Protecting public health is critically important to LCWSA, and its mission “to provide high quality, environmentally sound, efficient, reliable, and affordable water and sewer services to the people who live, work, and visit Livingston County.”

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner.

Call 226-8111, 343-3111, 393-1111 or 637-5100 STUDY WHAT YOU LOVE—ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS THE PATH TO SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT (NAPSI)—The United States has long been considered a leader in entrepreneurial pursuits, with everyone from ambitious self-starters to certified moguls making their way here from around the globe to transform dreams into realities. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the United States provides the best environment for cultivating entrepreneurship, ranking first out of 138 countries. On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding. So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education. The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company. The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue. In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules. The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills. “My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.” Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century. Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success. “Lycoming is resolute in its mission to offer students a 21st-century education, and I believe our entrepreneurship offerings are an important part of that charge. Thinking deeply and making bold decisions to do something the world has never seen, while also staying true to your passions, accurately describes the students at this institution—a truth that also closely aligns with the principles of entrepreneurship,” said Welch. VALENTINES TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD Scandinavian countries didn’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day until recently, but have now put their own spin on the traditions. Men write funny poems or rhyming love notes called Gaekkebrev and send them to women anonymously. Women must try to guess their admirers by counting dots that are put on the note that correspond to the number of letters in the man’s name.
