A National Award is Earned by Dr. Sandro R. Popelka DDS, MPH, MAGD The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that Sandro R. Popelka, DDS, MPH, MAGD, of Canandaigua, NY, received the association’s Mastership Award during the AGD 2016 annual meeting, which took place July 14 to 17 in Boston, MA. The Mastership Award is the AGD’s highest honor and one of the most respected designations within the profession. To earn this award, Dr. Popelka completed 1,100 hours of dental continuing education. As a Mastership Award recipient, Dr. Popelka joins more than 2,300 active AGD Masters who have gone above and beyond the basic requirements to care for their patient’s oral health. “This award requires an extraordinary amount of time and effort,” says AGD Immediate Past President W. Mark Donald, DMD, MAGD. “Dr. Popelka should be commended for his unflagging commitment to continuing education, which allows him to provide the best possible dental care and oral health education to his patients.” Dr. Popelka graduated from University of Rochester in 2005 and currently practices dentistry in Canandaigua. He and his wife, Anna, have 3 children, Giannina, Adriano, and Marcello.

MUSIC CAN IMPACT EMOTIONS Music is an integral part of the human experience. Songs have been sung for centuries, and music plays an integral role in many cultural ceremonies, rites of passage and other traditions. Love songs may be enjoyed on Valentine’s Day and stir up strong romantic feelings that enhance the theme of the day. But why is music so impactful? Researchers have had an interest in music and its impact on human emotion and perceptions for many years. Music of all genres and styles can be therapeutic and boost mood while bringing listeners pleasure and comfort. Sad music may intensify grief. Music can evoke strong feelings and may influence how individuals perceive other people and things. According to a recent study by researchers Nidhya Logeswaran and Joydeep Bhattacharya from the University of London, music affects how people see visual images. In an experiment, 30 subjects were presented with a series of happy or sad musical excerpts. After listening to the songs, the subjects were shown a photograph of a face. Some people were shown a happy face - the person was smiling - while others were exposed to a face with sad or neutral facial expressions. The participants were then asked to rate the emotional content of the face. Researchers found that happy music made happy faces seem that much more pleasant, while sad music exaggerated frowns. Similar effects were found with neutral faces. These findings illustrate how music can help improve physical and mental health when used in concert with other strategies. The American Music Therapy Association reports that music therapy programs can be used to manage stress, enhance memory and alleviate pain. The right music can serve as a catalyst for romance. Men and women can increase feelings of affection in their romantic partners by playing love songs in the background while offering gifts and tokens of their love. If a proposal is planned for February, one can set the mood with a favorite song that exemplifies the special relationship shared with a significant other. Those who may not be able to express their feelings verbally may find that music helps to convey those feelings. Music certainly can impact emotions, though the reasons why are not entirely known. However, people can use music to their advantage, particularly on Valentine’s Day.

What is a silent stroke? The brain is a complex organ responsible for controlling many different bodily functions. When working at optimal capacity, the brain is a wonder to behold. When illness or trauma affects the brain, various parts of the body may not work as they should. One of the more devastating things that can affect the brain is stroke. Stroke describes a sudden stoppage of blood from reaching the brain. Harvard Medical School states that if a large number of brain cells are starved of blood supply, they can die. With their demise, a person’s memory and ability to speak and move can be compromised. While many strokes come on suddenly, certain factors may indicate a person is at risk. Such factors may include prior heart attacks, genetics, high blood pressure, smoking, or a prior stroke. However, in a particular type of stroke - a “silent stroke” - symptoms are far more subtle and difficult to spot. Silent cerebral infarction, often referred to as “SCI” or “silent stroke,” is a brain injury likely caused by a blood clot interrupting blood flow to the brain, offers the American Stroke Association. Silent strokes increase risk for other strokes and can be a sign of progressive brain damage. A silent stroke is typically only noticed as a side component of an MRI of the brain. Many times patients do not recall having a stroke and never felt any symptoms. Silent strokes should not be mistaken for mini-strokes. Mini-stroke is a brief but discrete and memorable event, with symptoms appearing for a few minutes or a few hours. According to a study on silent stroke titled “Functional and Cognitive Consequences of Silent Stroke Discovered Using Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging in an Elderly Population” and published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society, silent strokes are quite common and can have serious consequences. Researchers have found that silent stroke is associated with impairments in tests of cognitive function rather than movement-oriented performance tests like rising from a chair. Almost 50 percent of studied silent

strokes affected frontal circuit components of the brain, such as the frontal cortex, basal ganglia and thalamus. Lesions in these brain structures compromised executive functions and were related to vascular dementia. Another study showed associations between silent stroke and visual field deficits, weakness in walking on heels, history of memory loss, migraines, and lower scores in cognitive function tests. The “silent” part of a silent stroke also refers to the areas of the brain that the stroke affects. Experts at Harvard Medical School explain that, during a silent stroke, an interruption in blood flow destroys areas of cells in a part of the brain that is “silent,” meaning that it doesn’t control any vital functions. Researchers say that, over time, the damage from silent strokes can accumulate, leading to more and more problems with memory. Collectively, silent strokes become silent no longer. There are certain ways to reduce the risk of any type of stroke. These include: · managing high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels · quitting smoking · reducing the risk of diabetes and effectively treat the condition if it is present · losing weight to prevent obesity · exercising and avoid a sedentary lifestyle · taking a low-dose aspirin or a drug that prevents blood clots. Silent strokes largely go unrecognized but can lead to significant brain injury. Getting the facts can help men and women reduce their risk for silent stroke.

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Maintain your vehicle. Poorly maintained vehicles endure undue stress that can be prevented by adhering to routine maintenance schedules. Peruse your vehicle’s owner’s manuals to determine the recommended intervals to change the oil and replace the air filter and spark plugs. These simple maintenance tasks are easy and inexpensive, but they make it easier for engines to run smoothly and make efficient use of fuel.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been taking Lipitor for high cholesterol. Lately, my pharmacist said that all statins can cause memory loss. I hesitate to stop taking Lipitor, but I don’t want this side effect. Please advise. -- P.C. ANSWER: Your pharmacist is quite right that some users of statins can have the unwanted side effect of memory loss. This is quite variable: Some people never get this effect, and it can be quite severe in a few. It appears to be reversible in the majority of people who get it. I wouldn’t recommend stopping unless you are having the side effect. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have chronic constipation, and have had it most of my life. I have used most of the bulking (husk) things that are out there. Nothing works. Years ago, I went to my doctor, and he said that I could take MiraLAX and use it for the rest of my life. It has worked! Now my new doctor wants me off of it, and wants me to incorporate fiber into my diet. I already do this. Plus I drink a lot of water. I start my day with a 24 ounces of water every morning before anything else. Is there anything wrong with taking MiraLAX every day? I do not take the full dose. -- V.B. ANSWER: While I recommend non-drug treatments, such as increased water intake, high-fiber diet and exercise as treatment for constipation, that doesn’t work for everybody. In that case, using a medication as recommended by your doctor makes sense. Polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX) is a generally safe treatment that works by increasing fluid in the bowel. It’s a good idea to use it as little as is needed to keep the stool from getting uncomfortably hard. READERS: The booklet on constipation explains this common disorder and its treatments. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 504W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Have you ever heard of someone with sleep apnea outgrowing the need of a breathing aid, such as CPAP? -- G.S. ANSWER: Most cases of sleep apnea are due to obstruction of the airway, caused by the relaxation of muscles in the back of the throat. Excess weight and obesity are the major risk factors for sleep apnea, but it can happen in normal-weight people. It is more common in older people, and men are at higher risk than women. Almost any condition can go away by itself, but in nearly every case of obstructive sleep apnea getting better without a specific treatment that I have seen, it has been associated with significant weight loss. It doesn’t have to be extreme weight loss. Since alcohol can make sleep apnea worse, stopping alcohol occasionally is enough to get it under control. I also recently mentioned singing exercises as a therapy for OSA, in addition to oral devices, CPAP or BiPAP devices, and surgery. ***
MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Feb. 20, 1985, in a highly controversial vote, the Irish government defies the powerful Catholic Church and approves the sale of contraceptives, a major turning point in Irish history. Up until 1979, Irish law prohibited the importation and sale of contraceptives.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. 4 FOODS THAT CAN BOOST ENERGY LEVELS Diet can go a long way toward increasing or lowering energy levels. No one wants to consume foods that will make it harder for them to get through the day, so the following are a handful of foods that pack an energetic punch. 1. Cashews: Cashews, which are high in magnesium, help to convert sugar into energy. Magnesium deficiency can lead to low energy levels, so nuts that are high in magnesium, including cashews, can provide that mid-afternoon jolt that some people are seeking. Cashews are high in calories, so it’s best for those looking to lose weight or maintain healthy weights to adhere to serving suggestion guidelines. 2. Skinless chicken: A study from researcher Judith Wurtman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Clinical Research Center found that alertness tends to increase when the brain produces the neurotransmitter dopamine and the hormone norepinephrine. Skinless chicken contains an amino acid known as tyrosine that helps in the production of both dopamine and norepinephrine. If skinless chicken is not available, other foods that may provide this same effect include fish, lean beef and eggs. In addition, lean meats like skinless chicken contain enough vitamin B to help ease insomnia. 3. Salmon: Omega-3 fatty acids can help the body fight inflammation, which has been linked to a host of ailments, including chronic fatigue. Salmon is also high in protein, which can eliminate the mid- to late-afternoon hunger pangs that can derail healthy diets and contribute to weight gain. 4. Beans: Beans are loaded with fiber, and that’s a good thing for energy levels. Like magnesium, which can also be found in beans, fiber takes awhile to digest, extending the energyboosting properties of foods loaded with fiber. In spite of the growing movement to eat and live healthier, many adults still do not include enough fiber in their diets. Men and women can consult with their physicians to determine how to make that happen, but eating more beans is a good start.

585-447-9108 APPLES are a low-calorie source of soluble fiber, and also are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples.

TURN IN YOUR MEDS AT THE DRUG COLLECTION BOXES LOCATED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY!! Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse. • Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision. • The non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America. • The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends – and the home medicine cabinet. • Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Feb. 26, 1919, the Grand Canyon is established as a national park. American geologist John Wesley Powell, who popularized the term “Grand Canyon” in the 1870s, was the first person to travel the entire length of the gorge in 1869. The harrowing voyage was made in four rowboats.

Did You Know? Animals verbalize in many different ways to communicate. One thing cat owners may notice is that cats have a tendency to meow as a form of speaking with humans. However, according to the North Shore Animal League America, cats almost never meow at other cats, as meowing is a sound generally reserved for interacting with humans. Cat owners should talk back to their cats often, as cats enjoy hearing their own names and their owners’ voices.

During the week of Christmas we received a surprise in the mail! A Christmas card from Valley Fuel Company that included a note “A gift of $$ has been applied to your account by an anonymous donor.” We would like to send a big thank you out to the anonymous donor! It is good to know there are so many wonderful people in our world. Dick & Yvonne Struble I would like to thank everyone who helped in any way when my grandson Kyle Halstead was in an accident. Thanks to all your prayers, he is home now and doing better every day. I can never express how much gratitude I feel, even for kind words spoken. Our lives will never be the same and it gives me great solace to know there are so many kindhearted and caring people. It is a miracle that he is still alive. From the man who first found him, the EMT’s who kept him
alive, all the doctors, nurses, therapists and so many prayers from people everywhere. God bless you all. The greatest gift is life itself. Kyle’s Grandma Onolee Thank you to the Avon Central School District Staff and Community members, especially East Avon Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, who made this year’s Christmas program so successful! We delivered gifts to over 30 children and their families. It is amazing to be connected to a special place like Avon that cares so deeply for the wellbeing of the community. It is with great optimism and joy to know that a community can band together for the greater good and be a special light to many children and families who are struggling. Thank you for all you do and Happy New Year! (-On behalf of many children and their families) You are always there when and if we need you. Thank you especially to Dispatcher Amanda Schultz and Deputy Moran. My mother’s vehicle was hit while she was parked at her apartment and Dispatcher Shultz sent Deputy Moran to take the report. My mother and I thank you greatly. Aprile and her Mom Linda
God. I suppose kisses under mistletoe at Christmas time is blasphemy in your eyes too?
Recently I went to a local liquor store to buy a certain bottle of wine. The clerk began a rant - insignificant wine from a minor winery, etc. After a few minutes of this rudeness I left. There was another local liquor store where the lady said, Oh I’m sorry we don’t carry that but I can try to get it for you. Guess where I’ll go next time?! I’ve been going to the Lima Save-A-Lot for many years, and will be sorry to see them go. To the reader who posted the article about smashing wedding cake in each other’s face...are you that prudish to even write that? First of all it’s not a “relatively new” custom. I am in my 50’s and I’ve seen this at almost every wedding I’ve been to as far back as I can remember. Cheer up and have a little fun. Smashing a little cake in the face of your new bride/groom is NOT breaking a solemn vow in the eyes of
On my way to work I am caught behind the same bus waiting for two children coming from the same house. The bus stops at the same time each day, 6:40 am. Most days the children are not waiting at the end of the driveway, which is longer than a football field and a half from their door to their stop. As soon as they open the door the bus driver puts his flashers on. Then the children walk down their long driveway, which holds all traffic up for at least 5-8 minutes each morning. Kids (and parents) have your children at the bus stop on time! Drivers of all busses, if the kids are not at their stop at the designated time then drive on. The next time you’re in a grocery store checkout line and you’re asked if you’d like to donate to feed the hungry, please don’t say “no thank you”. You’re not being offered something especially for you. You’re being asked to feed hungry children in and around the community. Say “not at this time” or simply “no”. No thank you? Come on.

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION
“Complete Carpentry Service”
Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.

Invest In Your Kitchen Kitchen remodels are a safe bet when it comes to putting money into improving a home. Residents tend to spend a great deal of time in the kitchen, but a dated, poorly functioning kitchen can detract from the value of a home, even if the rest of the home is in good shape. It’s possible to recoup between 60 and 120 percent of your kitchen remodel investment, especially if the kitchen matches up well with the rest of your home. Homeowners should know that a deluxe renovation may not be necessary, as relatively moderate improvements can create a whole new look for a kitchen.

Improve Your Home’s Curb Appeal - Take To The Trees M any hom eow ners grow accustom ed to overgrow n trees around their property and m ay not notice that low -hanging, unsightly branches are hiding the hom e from view. Buyers w ant to see the house, so take to the trees and trim any branches that hang too low or obscure your hom e.
Selling Your Home? · Look to paint. One of the least expensive improvement materials, but one that has a significant impact, is paint. Neutral, modern colors can easily liven up any space. If you paint with low-VOC paint, you also can advertise an ecofriendly home, which is very desireable these days. · Add illumination to rooms. A dark home is a dreary home. Adding light can mean including more overhead and accent lighting. Under-cabinet task lighting is a nice touch. Inclusion of skylights and sun tubes can bring natural light into rooms that may not have south- or west-facing windows.

Carnations One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.

PUTTING YOUR AFFAIRS IN ORDER Even if you have preplanned your funeral and drawn up both a living will and a standard will, you still may want to create a “durable power of attorney for healthcare.” This document enables you to assign a person to make important medical decisions for you if you are unable to do so for yourself. Also known as an “advanced healthcare directive,” this legal form necessitates that you appoint an agent who shares your medical treatment philosophy and values. It may also be a good idea to appoint an alternate agent. Your preferences should be discussed with the person(s) whom you appoint to ensure that he or she is comfortable making medical decisions on your behalf. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME hopes that you found this topic to be both interesting and informative. When planning ahead, consider preneed options. Predetermining your commemoration event alleviates those left behind from having to make those difficult decisions while grieving. To learn more, contact us at (585) 346-5401 to schedule an initial, confidential consultation at our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. “He that plants trees loves others besides himself…”
~ English Proverb
Lots of us have an affinity for the soil. Whether or not we have a “green thumb,” we enjoy working with growing things. We plant flowers that we expect to later delight us with their lovely, fragrant blossoms. We may plant a vegetable garden and hope to enjoy some truly fresh (and quite inexpensive) vegetables for our table. The one who plants trees is thinking less of his own enjoyment than of his children or others who will benefit from the shade or the fruit from the trees for many years. Remembering those who planted the trees we enjoy today, let’s plant trees now for tomorrow. Whatever a family chooses to pay for a funeral, we always render the finest, most considerate service possible.

UNPLUG FROM DEVICES Many people now spend ample time each day texting, posting to social media and watching videos on their smartphones. Devices such as phones and tablets might play big roles in many peoples’ lives, and few may realize just how much time they’re spending on their devices. According to Nielsen’s Total Audience Report, Americans aged 18 and older now spend more than 11 hours a day watching television, listening to the radio or using phones and other electronic devices. Common Sense Media, a nonprofit focused on assisting people in navigating the world of media and technology, notes that American teens and tweens spend about nine hours using media for enjoyment. Research conducted by Silentnight, a United Kingdombased bed and mattress company, found that mobile phone usage, at eight hours and 41 minutes per day, in the UK has now exceeded the amount of time people spend sleeping. Sleep experts warn that constant exposure to electronic devices is contributing to poor sleep and can have other negative effects on a person’s health. Cutting back on electronic device usage can prove challenging. However, with some patience and practice, it is possible to wean off devices without digital withdrawal symptoms.

When creativity is added, participants become enthusiastic! Have you heard of a progressive party being brought into the business world? The Fairport-Perinton Chamber members have had this experience. Chamber President Paul West stated, “Our Chamber hosts a monthly informal coffee. The venue changes monthly, as we move around to support our local business members and to acquaint professionals doing business in Fairport, Perinton, Egypt, and Bushnell’s Basin with one another and local business resources.” Ellen Reynolds, Chamber Events Chair added, “These monthly coffees also provide the opportunity for non-members to attend, as well as members, to check out the Chamber experience.” Member Ashby Tax & Consulting, LLC, of 1157 Fairport Road, thought that their office building would be of interest to the Coffee attendees, so they hosted an event, allowing attendees to personally experience what makes a building “green,” through a progressive breakfast. Ashby Tax & Consulting created Chamber member enthusiasm! The Chamber experienced record attendance at their progressive breakfast event. The attendees toured the office building, meeting business neighbors and hearing their stories of benefits from working in a “green” office building. Chamber member Ramona Stein, owner of Sounds for Life, stated, “It was a great event and very well attended! I enjoyed connecting with so many members in one setting and it was a great opportunity to learn†about all of the businesses that operate under one roof. The building story dates back to 1956. Cosmo Viola started a tradition of quality building standards in the Rochester, New York area. His vision for new and innovative ideas allowed him to build what most people thought could not be accomplished. His pride and success have been carried down through his entire family. Cosmo built the Perinton Professional Building, 1157 Fairport Road, in 1966. It was a state-of-the art building at the time. One of his sons, Daniel Viola, President of Viola Homes and Renewable Rochester, continues with his father’s vision. Dan believes in being a true craftsman, so when it was time to renovate this

Enjoying the progressive breakfast event at Ashby Tax & Consulting. office building, he wanted to make it the first “green” building in Fairport. The lumber was recycled from the old building, the original slate floor his father laid still remains and solar panels were installed from solar contractor, Renewable Rochester. Dan is a LEED AP, who in collaboration with Viola Storage, has designed and project managed new home construction and commercial building development. The six tenants in the “green” Perinton Professional Building include: Dentist, M.S. Mayer, DMD; Eyes on Rochester; Ashby Tax & Consulting; Fairport Chiropractic; R.W. Lloyd Financial; Upstate Alarm. Donna Favitta, Operations Manager at Ashby Tax & Consulting stated, “Our ability to connect with small businesses through the Chamber has provided a great opportunity for networking and referrals. We are delighted to start our 2nd year as a Chamber member. The services provided by the Chamber are cutting edge and most helpful to small businesses. Ashby Tax & Consulting highly recommends active participation in the Chamber, if you have business interests in Fairport, Perinton, Egypt, or Bushnell’s Basin.” Whether you are a member or just an interested party, plan to attend upcoming Chamber events, where business networking is fun!
