A National Award is Earned by Dr. Sandro R. Popelka DDS, MPH, MAGD The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that Sandro R. Popelka, DDS, MPH, MAGD, of Canandaigua, NY, received the association’s Mastership Award during the AGD 2016 annual meeting, which took place July 14 to 17 in Boston, MA. The Mastership Award is the AGD’s highest honor and one of the most respected designations within the profession. To earn this award, Dr. Popelka completed 1,100 hours of dental continuing education. As a Mastership Award recipient, Dr. Popelka joins more than 2,300 active AGD Masters who have gone above and beyond the basic requirements to care for their patient’s oral health. “This award requires an extraordinary amount of time and effort,” says AGD Immediate Past President W. Mark Donald, DMD, MAGD. “Dr. Popelka should be commended for his unflagging commitment to continuing education, which allows him to provide the best possible dental care and oral health education to his patients.” Dr. Popelka graduated from University of Rochester in 2005 and currently practices dentistry in Canandaigua. He and his wife, Anna, have 3 children, Giannina, Adriano, and Marcello.

Did You Know? Animals verbalize in many different ways to communicate. One thing cat owners may notice is that cats have a tendency to meow as a form of speaking with humans. However, according to the North Shore Animal League America, cats almost never meow at other cats, as meowing is a sound generally reserved for interacting with humans. Cat owners should talk back to their cats often, as cats enjoy hearing their own names and their owners’ voices.

HOME-STYLE BAKED CHICKEN Serves 4 to 6 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 11⁄2 teaspoons Poultry Seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 ⁄4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1 ⁄2 teaspoon paprika 4 to 5 pounds skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs and drumsticks Preheat the oven and a 9-by-13inch metal roasting pan to 375ºF. Place the olive oil and butter in the pan and place the pan in the oven on the lower rack. In a small bowl, combine the poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Set aside. Place the flour in a resealable bag. Place a few pieces of the chicken in the flour at a time, seal, and shake to coat. Remove and vigorously shake off any excess flour. Place the flour-dusted chicken on a clean platter. Repeat with the remaining chicken pieces. Remove the roasting pan from the oven and immediately arrange the chicken skin-side up in a single layer over the bottom of the pan and then sprinkle with some of the poultry seasoning blend and paprika. It should sizzle. Place the hot pan back on the lower rack of the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Remove, baste by spooning the juices that have collected in the pan over each piece, and then sprinkle the chicken with the remaining poultry seasoning blend. Return the pan to the oven and bake for 20 minutes more. Remove and baste one last time before moving the chicken to the middle rack and baking for 10 to 15 minutes more to further crisp the chicken skin. Let rest for 5 to 8 minutes before serving.
UNPLUG FROM DEVICES Keep tech devices out of the bedroom. Make bedrooms devicefree zones so they don’t disturb sleep. Various studies have found the blue light emitted from phones and other electronics can wreak havoc with the body’s natural circadian rhythms, reducing melatonin production and causing the body to think it’s daylight. Turn off devices at least 60 to 90 minutes before bed to give the mind time to wind down.

Inspect t ires bef ore road t rips Look for cracking or bulging treads. Cracking or bulging treads or sidew alls can eventually cause a blow out, w hich can put you and your fellow road trippers in serious jeopardy. Cracked or bulging treads or sidew all s indicate tires are w orn or w eak, so bring your car to your mechanic for an inspection if you discover such problems.
SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS Exercise extra caution when driving on roadways during the winter, as they may contain ice or snow. All it takes is a small coating of precipitation on roadways to make driving treacherous. Wetlooking roadways may be wet, or they may be covered by ice, and it’s difficult to tell the difference with the naked eye. Always slow down and assume you are driving on ice. Make every effort to improve visibility. This includes checking windshield washer fluid levels and ensuring windshield blades are in good working order.

Today’s auto manufacturers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instances, roof racks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

32nd Annual
Pen-a-Poem CONTEST WINNER:
RUNNER-UP:
The Trunk
Once More
By Ellen Hopsicker
By Laurie Reynolds
A battered trunk in the corner stood With layers of dust upon its lid How many years have drifted past Since fingers probed its content last The treasure held there deep inside Was placed by some forgotten bride A handsome soldier and his sweet young wife Had loved and wished to share a life Yet all that remains is an old tintype And a ruffled gown from a long ago night A box of checkers scratched and scarred And a folded letter that tears had marred It tells of the soldier forced to roam Though his aching heart had yearned for home The battle he feared was then in sight And the soldier knew an anguished night With the grace of God he said he’d be Homeward soon his bride to see They fought with venom all around But the soldier had fallen to bloodied ground A dying captive cold as stone Soon would his wife be alone So the family Bible old and worn Was marked with the blue of his uniform Then long ago that broken bride Packed the trunk with her heart inside And there it stands its secrets hid Beneath a dark and dusty lid.
The old farm house stood vacant and in disrepair, An elderly couple had died and there was no one to care. In the yard where children once giggled and played, A rotting swing set in pieces now laid. The realtor showed the property once more this day; “Been on the market a long time” the neighbors did say. “Too many repairs,” potential buyers had grumbled But the couple, to each other in the corner, only mumbled. They put their offer in right after the house tour Considerably lower since they’d have to spend much more. When they were approved and given the news The newlyweds happily considered their next move. Once the mortgage was secured; Contractors were hired and more spending occurred. On Valentine’s Day they moved to the old farmland With time and elbow grease all would go as planned. Five years later their family complete, Teeter totter and swing set climbed on by little feet. Children playing and having happy times galore; This house has become a home once more.

Add Little Touches - An old six-paned window with cracked and worn wood can become a frame for family photos. Wood from an old barn can be used for a coffee table or fireplace mantel. Mix up the chairs around your dining room table by blending both modern and contemporary styles. These little changes in a room’s decor might not be immediately obvious, but as visitors look around the room, they’ll notice the special touches you’ve made by mixing two distinctive styles.
HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.

EMPLOY SIMPLE FIRE PREVENTION MEASURES TO MAXIMIZE SAFETY Did you know that, according to the National Fire Protection Association, most people have a false sense of security regarding house fires, believing that they would have approximately six minutes to evacuate their home in the event of a fire? In reality, smoke and fire spread rapidly and can overcome occupants in less than three minutes. When a fire occurs, there’s no question that time is critical. The good news is there are several important steps you can take to maximize your escape time. With the following measures in place, you’ll create critical protection for what matters most -- your home and family. 1. Install smoke alarms. You should have one in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. For the best protection, make sure all smoke alarms are interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound. 2. Inspect and clean smoke alarms monthly. Replace batteries in spring and fall. To clean the alarm, open the cover and gently vacuum the interior. 3. Prepare and practice a fire escape plan. Draw a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of every room - especially sleeping areas. Discuss the escape routes with every member of your household, and agree on a meeting place outside your home in case of emergency. Practice your escape plan at least twice a year. 4. Select building materials that provide passive fire protection. Passive fire protection is part of the core of the building and helps control fire by limiting its spread. One very effective form of passive fire protection is the installation of insulation. When adding or upgrading insulation, look for products made from naturally fireresistant, inorganic materials.

Most abused prescription drugs come from family and friends. You could be a drug dealer and not even know it.
TURN IN YOUR MEDS AT THE DRUG COLLECTION BOXES LOCATED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY!! Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse. • Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision. • The non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America. • The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends – and the home medicine cabinet. • Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Can Spleen Rupture Without Any Trauma? DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was admitted to the hospital with a ruptured spleen that bled into his belly. His surgeon repaired it with a coil. He was not in an accident and had no injuries or any bruising anywhere on his body. His doctor had never seen this; he says a ruptured spleen usually is sustained from some sort of accident. My husband is almost 59, and in good health otherwise. How could this happen, and could this happen again? -- J.C. ANSWER: The spleen removes defective red blood cells from the circulation, and it also destroys bacteria and infected cells. In fact, it is in many ways like a big lymph node, responding to infections by activating and enlarging. Although a ruptured spleen is well-described in the literature, I’ve never seen a case like your husband’s either. The last ruptured spleen I saw was a college football player who was simultaneously hit by two opposing players, one on either side, both much larger than he was. Most people with spleen rupture had an enlarged spleen to begin with, from cancer such as leukemia or lymphoma, infection such as EBV (the virus that causes mononucleosis), inflammatory conditions such as pancreatitis or mechanical causes such as pregnancy. A few cases are related to medications, and a few have no identifiable cause for rupture. As far as risk of it happening again, there you have me. I found one paper that says the prognosis is “excellent.” I would have to refer you back to his surgeon. People who have had their spleens removed are at risk for certain infections, and should have a vaccine for pneumococcus, a major cause of pneumonia. The vaccine is normally given at age 65. Your husband should speak with his doctor about getting it now (since I don’t know if his spleen is now considered normal). *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I read in your column that for vaginal atrophy (dryness/itching) you suggest that a woman use topical cream instead of estrogen cream. I am 59 years old, and have been using Premarin cream externally for a month with noticeable results. I use a dab every other day. Should I continue to use it even when I don’t have symptoms, or only as needed? If you think non-hormonal cream would be better, could you suggest one? I have tried one, but it didn’t seem to be effective. -- A.A. ANSWER: I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. “Topical” in this case meant a vaginal estrogen cream, as opposed to estrogen taken by mouth. I would continue using it, since it has been effective. Most women use it twice a week after initial treatment. Non-estrogen creams are fine for many women, but estrogen creams like Premarin usually are more effective. Dryness and itching may be caused by recurring vaginal infections, which are often troubling to women. The booklet explains them and their treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1203W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

The residents of the newly re-named LAKEVILLE VILLAGE would like to send heartfelt thanks to all the local merchants who donated merchandise and/ or gift cards, to be used at our Community Christmas Party as door prizes. Again many thanks and a very Happy New Year! Mary Nash Social Club Member I have several accounts with various different banking institutions, and that being said, the team at Hamlin’s Citizen’s Bank are the BEST. If there was a star rating process, KYLEE JONES would get a TEN. It is always enjoyable to do business with them. Not only do they get the job done, but I always leave Citizen’s with a smile on my face. I love bantering back and forth with my usual quips and one liners, with both Kylee and STEPHAN who is the assistant branch manager. So, thanks to Kylee and Stephan for allowing
me the time to banter with my quips and off the wall sense of humor. All of you have always been courteous and very friendly. Other bank employees should take pointers from how you treat your customers. Thanks for making banking so enjoyable. From the sugar lady. lol Thank you to everyone who helped to make the 2016 Manchester/ Shortsville Holiday Basket Program a success. We are nothing without your support. To all who shopped and donated food or gifts, those who wrapped the gifts, and those who delivered the items - THANK YOU. Your generosity made the Holidays brighter for many in our community. See you next year. Holiday Basket Committee I would like to thank Adrian who works at the Geneseo Walmart. I need distilled water for medical reasons and the shelves were empty. One employee said there was some in the warehouse, but he couldn’t get it for me then. When I asked Adrian he stopped what he was doing and got me the water from the warehouse (even though it wasn’t his department).
On December 8, an advertised bus trip turned toxic. The bus was over an hour late at the pickup and the passengers waiting unleashed a tirade of abusive language that ruined the whole day. The most abusive passenger held us up further because she boarded the bus leaving her car running and we had to wait while she disembarked to turn it off. Of course, we were all supposed to be nice about that delay. Therefore- 1. Bus companies should refund for cancelled services or late services 2. Passengers should consider how their abusive language and demeanor has to be tolerated by other customers.
Whoever approved the zoning for these ridiculous LED Digital Lighted signs, made a stupid, poor decision! Why is it so hard to just say NO to them? They are too bright and too distracting.
People who want to go to these establishments know where they are without these borderline illegal Lighted signs! If these places were/are suffering for business, try better sales and less expensive pricing! A bright sign will not do it! They are trashy and cause light pollution! I thought bars had to do away with these neon signs. Why is it okay now? Zoning Boards should restrict future signs and get rid of existing ones! It is Light Pollution & negatively impacts environment.
On Sunday afternoon [local] Chorale held a wonderful holiday concert; actually it would have been wonderful if a young, undisciplined child had not ruined it. Parents are to be commended for introducing young children to such cultural events but not when they are permitted to disrupt the performance. The child in question was allowed to roam the aisle, babble on and on, and when finally corralled, she rebelled with a scream heard even from the entryway; it was far too long before she left. How inconsiderate to the audience and rude to the singers and director.

Lilies The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.

IN DEATH’S WAKE In the wake, or aftermath, of death, many cultures hold a “wake,” which is a vigil for the dead. Among the Irish, the wake is an intimate expression of national character. It is a curious blend of religious devotion, social support, and cultural cohesion. At the center of its importance remains the Celtic passion for sturdy vigil, as mourners wait out the darkness on the promise of something better yet to come. The Irish wake was woven from the twin threads of compassion and companionship, which are critical elements in the natural structure of the ancient tribe. Later, Christian elements were integrated to include expression of civility and the public celebration of grief, faith, sorrow, and trust. If you want to introduce traditional or unique elements into a commemoration event, KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME will honor your requests. No detail is too large or too small for us to handle. We are here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (585) 346-5401. Please visit our tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. We have been serving our communities with compassion for many years. QUOTE: “Lord, heap miseries upon us yet entwine our arts with laughters low.” ~ James Joyce, Finnegans Wake

CROSSWORD
W hen I stand before God at the end of my life, I w ould hope that I w ould not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’ - Erma Bombeck
“No one is more unhappy than he who never had bad luck; he could never test himself...” ~ Seneca We may pity the poor soul who has consistent bad luck but he has one advantage over his fellows who have had nothing but good fortune… he knows that he can survive the worst that fortune has in store for him. A Roman philosopher of the first century, Seneca recognized this seeming paradox. The person upon whom fortune continually smiles is made unhappy by uncertainty. Never having been tested, he wonders how he would manage if his good luck changed to bad. It may help to keep this in mind when we experience a run of bad luck. We have no “standard” service. Each family we serve has unique needs and we tailor our service to meet these. Our best references are from the families we have served.

Your How seniors can preserve their brains Physical activity and proper diet and nutrition can help people age 50 and older maintain their physical health. But there are also ways aging men and women can preserve brain health in an effort to prevent or delay the cognitive decline that affects millions of seniors across the globe. It’s easy to overlook the importance of keeping the brain healthy. However, a decline in brain function can result in poor concentration, memory loss and a host of other issues. Sometimes, by the time symptoms present themselves, it may be too late to reverse any damage. Research suggests that a combination of nutrition and mental, social and physical activities may have a greater impact with regard to maintaining and improving brain health than any single activity. Harvard Medical School also states that volunteering, caring for others and pursuing hobbies may benefit the brains of older adults. A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found participants who reported higher levels of purpose in life exhibited superior cognitive function despite the accumulation of abnormal protein depositions (amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles) in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Having a purpose also may help those who do not have Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to the suggestions mentioned above, those who want to boost brain health can consider these strategies. · Start exercising the brain early on. A study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal examined cognitive function in people ages 45 to 70. Researchers found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45-year-old participants as well as the older participants. It’s never too early to put a brain health plan into motion. · Read more books. Reading can open individuals up to new vocabulary and scenarios that promote a stronger brain and recall
Doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles can keep the brain sharp.
ability. Enrolling in an education course at a local college, community center or online also may be beneficial. · Hit the gym. Several studies suggest an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline. This could be because exercise elevates heart rate, which pumps more blood to the brain and body. · Supplement with DHA. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is dominant in the brain. Adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which is generally high in natural sources of omega-3, including fish and mono-unsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Supplements also may help, but individuals should consult with their doctors about which products to take. · Challenge the mind. Men and women can engage in challenging activities that stray from their routines. Puzzles, strategic games, jigsaw puzzles, or difficult hobbies can benefit the brain. · Keep a close-knit group of friends. Regular conversation and social interaction is a key component of any brain health wellness plan. Slowing cognitive decline and promoting greater brain health should be a priority for adults of all ages.

Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Pay In Advance Not all restaurants will allow it, but when making the reservation ask if it’s possible the pay the bill prior to the dinner. Ideally, the bill should not come to the table. However, if the restaurant won’t allow the bill to be paid in advance, grab it once it’s left on the table and then quickly look it over before paying. Never argue over the bill when hosting a client for dinner. If need be, save the receipt and call the restaurant the following day.
