A National Award is Earned by Dr. Sandro R. Popelka DDS, MPH, MAGD The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that Sandro R. Popelka, DDS, MPH, MAGD, of Canandaigua, NY, received the association’s Mastership Award during the AGD 2016 annual meeting, which took place July 14 to 17 in Boston, MA. The Mastership Award is the AGD’s highest honor and one of the most respected designations within the profession. To earn this award, Dr. Popelka completed 1,100 hours of dental continuing education. As a Mastership Award recipient, Dr. Popelka joins more than 2,300 active AGD Masters who have gone above and beyond the basic requirements to care for their patient’s oral health. “This award requires an extraordinary amount of time and effort,” says AGD Immediate Past President W. Mark Donald, DMD, MAGD. “Dr. Popelka should be commended for his unflagging commitment to continuing education, which allows him to provide the best possible dental care and oral health education to his patients.” Dr. Popelka graduated from University of Rochester in 2005 and currently practices dentistry in Canandaigua. He and his wife, Anna, have 3 children, Giannina, Adriano, and Marcello.

Canine Health: Getting To the Heart of It (Family Features) “The heart is an organ that benefits greatly from lean body mass,” said Dr. Al Townshend, staff veterinarian, Wellness Natural Pet Food. “Excess fat around the heart can create resistance, which makes the heart work harder for each beat.” To help dogs maintain a healthy heart, Dr. Townshend suggests a feeding regimen that includes high quality protein, fat and carbohydrates, along with essential vitamins and minerals. risk of blood clots. Along with proper nutrition, pet parents should strive to provide their dogs with regular exercise in the form of walks, hikes and active play. Yearly veterinary examinations can also help maintain a pet’s heart health, as well as his or her overall wellbeing. For more information, visit www.wellnesspetfood.com.

* Be a neat packer. Carefully packed suitcases are frequently easier to scan with the X-ray machine. If TSA agents do need to open your bag, you will be saved the embarrassment of your suitcase’s contents exploding all over the airport.

* Don’t push the 3-1-1 rule. Peanut butter, jam, gravy and cranberry sauce won’t make it through security even if they are your lunch for the day. Treat these items just as you would lotions, toothpaste and other liquids and gels. * Keep gifts unwrapped. No one wants to have their Christmas presents greedily torn apart by TSA officers, but if they need too, they will. Wrap your gifts after you’ve flown.

Love your home, again®

• Save Money On Utility Costs • Be Comfortable In Your Home

* Pick the fastest security agent. If you are a pro at picking the fastest checkout line at the grocery store, now is the time to use your skills. Sometimes it isn’t about the shortest line, but the most efficient agent.

Locally owned & operated

* Organize carry-ons. Once you get to the X-ray machine, it’s best if you are ready to go. Stow your laptop in an easy-to-reach space and have your 3-1-1 bag ready. A few moments of planning beforehand can save you hold-ups and stress while you’re in line. * Plan a sensible outfit. Your airport outfit might have to be a little boring in order to speed through security. You don’t want to have to take off jewelry, belts, scarves, coats and lace-up boots, so today is the day to wear slip on shoes and a simple, one-layer outfit with no accessories. * Have your documents ready. Get out your drivers’ license, passport and boarding pass before you reach the agent. This keeps you from having to root around in your pockets and bags while you make others wait.

On the Saturday before Thanksgiving I accidentally fell while working at an exit of the Thruway, breaking my hip. I want to thank everyone who stopped to help me, especially the first woman who let me lean against her until the ambulance came. She was my angel. Thank you to my coworkers who brought blankets to cover me up. A thank you to my supervisor who came quickly from another exit and stayed with me at the hospital. I’m still at home recovering. There are just so few words to say how truly grateful I am. I’m just so overwhelmed by you all. God bless each of you. My five-year-old brother spent some time in the hospital over the holiday season. At the hospital, there were kind, caring nurses who worked hard to

help him all day, every day. Among other things, I saw a nurse hold his hand and get him some Italian ice so that he would take his medicine. Also, I know a nurse in our area who was excited to work on New Year’s Eve so that she could see the first baby of 2017. I am so thankful for the nurses in our area who sacrifice and work so hard to help others. The Memorial Day Detachment # 468 of the Marine Corps League would like to thank everyone who participated in our Toys For Tots campaign. We collected, and with the help of our participating agencies, distributed over 5,000 toys to children in Ontario and Livingston Counties. All toys collected in Ontario or Livingston County were distributed within that county. We appreciate everyone who participated as a drop off point, made donations, helped distribute the toys or just spread the word. A lot of children had a Merry Christmas because of you and we are truly grateful. Thank you.

People need to learn how to drive. I am a 20-year-old woman and I have never been in an accident of any kind. I drive the same route every day to school and work, almost always stuck behind a vehicle with a driver who does not know how to use the round-about or how to correctly use turning signals, etc. Not all the time is the driver old, but last week I was behind an older woman who stopped in the middle of the round-a-bout. I stopped at the yield, honked, and motioned for her to “GO” so she did not cause an accident! In the next round-about down the road, she proceeded to do the same thing! It disgusts me that America has become a hazard on the roads due to incapable drivers. As a retail store employee please remember a few things the next time you are in line. We’re supposed to make sure you leave the store happy & for the most part “say yes.”

So... Yes, it’s rude when you’re on your cell as we help you. Yes, you are taking your miserable life out on the wrong person; it’s not my fault that you’re miserable. Yes we know you switched the tags/stickers for an even lower price. Yes, we think you’re nuts asking for a discount on an item because that’s the price you think it should be; It’s a business not a garage sale. Yes, I am embarrassed for you when you’re yelling at a cashier, calm down because you’re making a fool of yourself. Smile. Merry Christmas

The polite garbage can etiquette is to put your trash cans out the evening before or morning of pickup day and bring them in once they’ve been emptied. When you put yours out ONE WEEK prior to pick-up day and then leave the empty, scattered cans on your front lawn for days afterward it becomes an eyesore to the neighborhood. Think about this ~ if the entire neighborhood followed that practice what kind of a slum would this street look like? Please show some consideration to those of us who care.

VALENTINES TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe. Come Valentine’s Day, candy, flowers and other gifts are exchanged between sweethearts in one of the many traditions associated with the holiday. The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the anniversary of his death. Others believe it was the Christian church’s way of Christianizing the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is now celebrated by millions and is one of the retail industry’s most lucrative shopping holidays.

How does w ind energy w ork ? The blades on a w ind turbine act like an airplane w ing. W hen the w ind blow s, low -pressure air forms on the dow nw ind side of the blade. This low pressure pocket pulls the blade tow ard it, causing the rotor to turn, called lift. The force of the lift is actually much stronger than the w ind’s force against the front side of the blade, w hich is called drag. As the rotor continues to spin, it also s pins a generator to produce electricity. Turbines may be connected to a pow er grid to pow er larger areas or be stand-alone units for personal use. M any elect ricity providers have contracted w ith w ind plants to offer w ind-pow ered electricity to customers.

How seniors can simplify everyday tasks The ability to perform everyday tasks is something many people take for granted. But as men and women approach or exceed retirement age, many may start to struggle with chores and tasks they have performed for decades. Physical limitations are a common side effect of aging. But such limitations do not have to prove too big a hurdle for seniors to clear. In fact, there are many ways for seniors to simplify everyday tasks while maintaining their independence. · Embrace technology. Even the proudest Luddites cannot deny technology’s potential to make seniors’ lives easier. Seemingly simple tasks like shopping for groceries and vacuuming a home can be difficult for seniors with dwindling or limited mobility. But seniors with Internet access in their homes can order their groceries online and then pick them up in-store or have them delivered, saving them the trouble of walking around the store. With regard to vacuuming, autonomous vacuum cleaners have removed the need to use traditional vacuum cleaners. Certain autonomous vacuums employ sensors to detect dirty spots on the floor, and these vacuums can even be programmed to clean the home while residents are out of the house. · Upgrade bathrooms. Tasks associated with personal hygiene also tend to be taken for granted until they become difficult. But a few simple bathroom alterations can help seniors safely navigate the bathrooms in their homes so they can maintain their personal hygiene without fear of injury. Grab bars can be installed on shower walls so seniors can safely get in and out of their showers and bathtubs. Such bars are both effective and inexpensive, and some do not even require any drilling to install. Specialty grab bars, tub grips and tub transfer benches are just a few additional products that can make bathing easier for seniors who have lost or are starting to lose some of their physical strength.

· Get “smart” on the road. Seniors who are experiencing mild difficulty driving can make getting about town that much easier by plugging their smartphones into their vehicles or making use of the various apps that have become standard in modern vehicles. For example, the maps app on a smartphone can be connected to a car and direct seniors to their destinations, saving them the trouble of remembering all the ins and outs of how to get a particular destination. Seniors also can employ apps to help them find their vehicles should they forget exactly where they parked in crowded parking lots. Such apps can increase seniors’ comfort levels on the road while helping them maintain their independence. · Downsize. Whether downsizing to a smaller home or simply downsizing a lifestyle, seniors may find that living smaller is akin to living simpler. Empty nesters may find they no longer need several bedrooms in their homes, and moving into smaller homes can reduce their daily workloads while also clearing out clutter that can make performing everyday chores more difficult. Men and women accustomed to hustle and bustle may also find that cutting back on professional and/or personal commitments gives them more energy for everyday activities while enriching the commitments they continue to maintain. Aging men and women can employ various strategies to simplify their lives and maintain their independence well into their golden years.

DR. ROACH WRITES: I wrote a column on cracked fingertips, and received a wealth of suggestions from readers. For prevention, some suggestions I liked included avoiding too-hot water for handwashing, antibacterial soaps and wool gloves, all of which can remove protective oils from your fingers. A humidifier in the house can prevent drying of all the skin. Home-treatment remedies included flax-seed oil or B vitamins by mouth. (I don’t know if these are effective, but they should be safe.) Most people recommended emollients to the hands, specifically Preparation H, O’Keefe’s Working Hands, Bag Balm, CeraVe, Chapstick and Carmex Healing Cream. Plain petrolatum (Vaseline) works very well for many people and is inexpensive. The area can be covered at night by a bandage or glove. Several people recommended saltwater soaks. One noted that the pure mountain water of Colorado Springs cured him in three days. Finally, one person recommended trimming the nails quite short. These home remedies have helped many. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: After an extreme case of vertigo, including vomiting and being taken to the emergency room, my unsteadiness remains. Over a week later, I need to use a walker to be safe. I am 79, and this happened once four years ago, but without the aftereffects. Any suggestions? -- M.W. ANSWER: The major causes of vertigo, acute labyrinthitis and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, often continue to produce attacks that tend to lessen in severity up to a month after the initial severe attack. A walker may be a useful precaution while recovering. If the problem persists, I strongly recommend a visit with a physical and/or occupational therapist for vestibular rehabilitation, which is physical therapy to restore balance. It also might be necessary to revisit your doctor to confirm the original diagnosis. The booklet on vertigo explains this disruptive condition in detail and outlines its treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 801W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My 15-year-old son was just admitted to the hospital for depression and ADD. His thyroid tests came back abnormal. There is thyroid disease in the family. Is that the cause of his illness? -- Anon. ANSWER: Thyroid conditions, including both hyper- (too much) and hypo- (too little) thyroid hormone are common in the general population, but more so in people who are diagnosed with a wide variety of psychiatric illnesses, including depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. I have read that up to a third of people in new admissions for psychiatric conditions have thyroid abnormalities. It isn’t always clear whether the thyroid problem caused the psychiatric illness, and probably most often there is a large combination of factors, including genetics, environmental and medical conditions that affect the development of psychiatric conditions. It is clear that sometimes, but not always, treating the underlying thyroid condition can make managing the psychiatric symptoms much easier. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Magnesium deficiency can lead to low energy levels, so nuts that are high in magnesium, including cashews, can provide that mid-afternoon jolt that some people are seeking. Cashews are high in calories, so it’s best for those looking to lose weight or maintain healthy weights to adhere to serving suggestion guidelines. 2. Skinless chicken: A study from researcher Judith Wurtman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Clinical Research Center found that alertness tends to increase when the brain produces the neurotransmitter dopamine and the hormone norepinephrine. Skinless chicken contains an amino acid known as tyrosine that helps in the production of both dopamine and norepinephrine. If skinless chicken is not available, other foods that may provide this same effect include fish, lean beef and eggs. In addition, lean meats like skinless chicken contain enough vitamin B to help ease insomnia. 3. Salmon: Omega-3 fatty acids can help the body fight inflammation, which has been linked to a host of ailments, including chronic fatigue. Salmon is also high in protein, which can eliminate the mid- to late-afternoon hunger pangs that can derail healthy diets and contribute to weight gain. 4. Beans: Beans are loaded with fiber, and that’s a good thing for energy levels. Like magnesium, which can also be found in beans, fiber takes awhile to digest, extending the energyboosting properties of foods loaded with fiber. In spite of the growing movement to eat and live healthier, many adults still do not include enough fiber in their diets. Men and women can consult with their physicians to determine how to make that happen, but eating more beans is a good start.

Prepare your home to sell • Do a deep cleaning. Whether a cleaning service is hired or the homeowner does it himself, tackling necessary cleaning projects could make the home shine. Now is the time to wash the windows, shampoo the carpets, regrout the bathrooms, and tackle all of those messes that could compromise a sale. • Add a fresh coat of paint. If walls are bright colors or eclectic, it could pay to paint rooms in more neutral shades to appeal to the masses. Just be aware that some buyers are suspicious of paint, especially freshly painted ceilings. They may think a homeowner is trying to hide something, usually water stains. • Keep the home updated. While one doesn’t have to follow every trend, ensuring the home is ageless can make for a better sell. So if the cabinets scream 1985 and the bathroom is circa 1967, it could be time to do some updating.

5 Tips for Achieving Better Tech-life Balance 1. Establish personal tech-life balance policies. Take a look at what you value and set some policies to help you stay connected to what’s most important. For example, everyone values family time, but it is not always prioritized. You might make a family policy that limits technology at the dinner table, after 9 p.m. or while your children complete their homework. Maybe you and your partner agree to shut off technology for an hour before bed to give attention to each other. 2. Maximize your devices’ efficiency. Waiting for programs to load can be a frustrating timewaster so make your devices as user-friendly as possible. The speed and amount of memory you’ve got installed helps determine how fast applications are able to operate. Upgrading your system’s memory and software and closing the apps you are not using are simple low-cost ways to help your technology help you. 3. Pick sleep over technology. Checking Instagram, e-mail, or LinkedIn cannot compete with the benefit of a half hour more sleep each night. In many ways, your brain is a computer, too. At night this neurological PC repairs genes, secretes many regulatory hormones, conjures up the necessary dreams that keep you sane and stores information you learned that day - to note just a few of the many things it does to reset your body. Given the choice between technology and sleep, opt to get some more shuteye. 4. Look up. Seriously, every once in a while just look up and see what is going on in the real world all around you. Make eye contact. Smile at someone. Breathe deeply. Pay attention to the world. There is magic out there that you are missing. 5. Stop taking yourself so seriously. We need to understand that when we let go of some of our technology, other ideas will come into clearer focus. We have to believe that Chicken Little’s sky will not fall if we log off for an hour. If we miss a selfie, a posting, or a call, the planets will remain in orbit and in the meantime, if we are lucky, we will have reconnected with our humanness in a meaningful way.

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Commuting is a part of daily life for many working professionals. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 American Community Survey, the average American spends 25 minutes commuting to work each day. However, Citi’s 2015 ThankYou Premier Commuter Index says the average commute time in the United States is 45 minutes. The reasons for that disparity are unknown, though if one accepts the latter statistic as more accurate than the yearsold Census Bureau data, it’s fair to say Americans spend far more time getting to work than their neighbors to the north. But commutes in Canada also can be lengthy, as Canada’s National Household Survey found that, in 2011, commuters in Canada spent an average of roughly 25 minutes traveling to work each day. While many people enjoy their daily commutes, feeling it’s a time to prepare for the day ahead and, if using public transportation, to relax and let someone else do the work, it’s fair to say the majority of commuters would like to spend less time getting to and from work. Many would also like to spend less money getting to and from their offices, and finding ways to conserve fuel is an effective way to do just that.

Snow, ice, slush and other w inter driving challenges can threaten both driver and passenger safety, and adding distractions into the m ix only exacerbates the situation. So it m ay be best to sim ply drive w ith caution and focus, to stay on the road this w inter. Put distractions on ice. Despite m any recent public service announcem ents and new s articles on the dangers of texting and driving, drivers betw een the ages of 18 and 35 say texting is their top distraction w hile on the road. Other distractions include talking on the phone, talking to other passengers and eating w hile driving. Check your tire tread to prepare for snow. Worn tread is the No. 1 cause of skidding during the w inter season, so it is im portant to m ake sure your tires are up to the task before hitting the road. A quick w ay to do this is to check your tires’ tread depth indicators. Tread depth indicators are sm all raised bars that run in-betw een a tire’s tread grooves. When a tire’s tread is w orn dow n to these indicator bars, it’s tim e to change to a new set of tires. Check your tire pressure. Every 10-degree drop in air tem perature can actually cause a vehicle’s tires to lose up to 2 pounds per square inch (psi) in tire pressure. Im proper tire pressure can result in increased tread w ear and low ered perform ance, factors that are highly detrim ental to one’s safety in w inter driving conditions.

MAKE EVERY ANNIVERSARY COUNT

Experience An UnCommon Education

Wedding anniversaries provide opportunities for couples to reflect and relive the excitement of their wedding days. Anniversaries can easily be forgotten amid the hustle and bustle of daily life, but many couples are making concerted efforts to ensure their anniversaries are celebrated as the special occasions they are. A first wedding anniversary is a special one. Some couples celebrate their first anniversaries by enjoying a piece of wedding cake that has been properly preserved in the freezer. Couples may also dance to their wedding songs or enjoy a nice dinner at a favorite restaurant. The first anniversary also is a time to pull out the wedding video or photo album and reminisce about the wedding day. Anniversaries are a great way for couples to celebrate their time together by stepping away from emails, text messages, work obligations, and even mundane everyday tasks to once again remember a day and moment that changed their lives forever.

Financially Fit: Five Steps To Get A Handle On Your Credit • Review your credit report. Take a comprehensive look at what’s there, good and bad. Make sure you thoroughly review your report for any errors or mistakes, especially after the holidays. Tools like AnnualCreditReport.com let you check your report annually for free. Check your credit score to see if it’s dropped and to give you a basis for comparison moving forward. Resources such as Credit.com allow you to easily pull your score. • Know what you owe. Tally up those balances and determine your debt to credit ratio - that is, the amount of money you owe on your cards versus your available credit, which accounts for approximately 30 percent of your credit score. If you’re using more than half of your available credit, this will likely lower your credit score. This means that if you have three credit cards with a combined limit of $10,000, your total balance should be below $5,000. • Be sure to pay your bills on time and at more than the monthly minimum. Sure, it’s intuitive, but simply paying your bills on time accounts for about 35 percent of your credit score. Make sure that at least the minimum required balance is paid - even if you can’t pay them in full. Also, pay more than the minimum payment every month to pay down your balance faster and decrease interest charges. • Pay off the card with the highest interest rate first. These are the cards that are costing you the most, so paying them off ahead of a card with a lower interest rate will save you more money. • Keep your cards open. Unless you have a compelling reason to close a card it’s best not to close credit cards, especially ones where you have a long positive payment history. When closing a card, not only can your debt to credit ratio increase, you also end up losing the history associated with the card and change the mix of your credit, which could negatively impact your score. And, in the future, do your research before signing on that dotted line. It may have been tempting to open up a retail store credit card to save 15 percent on a recent purchase, but those savings are now ultimately going to end up on your billing statement as interest. Instead, look for a card that works with your lifestyle. Review your options and find a card with a great rewards program and the lowest interest rate possible.

Lilies The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.

We would like to thank all our family and friends for the tremendous outpouring of love and support after our unexpected loss of Gloria McKeown.␣ She was a wonderful Wife, Mother, Busia, and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.␣ We are grateful for all the food, cards, donations, kind words and guidance with our healing process.

“To carry a care to bed is to sleep with a pack on your back…”

~ Yidish adage

It is seldom our good fortune to experience cares and problems that can be easily resolved by day’s end. However, it is best to make thoughtful and practical disposition of the cares of the day as quickly as possible. There is nothing more wearing and depressing than to greet the new day with the handicap of yesterday’s problems carried over. Whatever the nature of the problem.... big or small.... make an effort to work it out, solve it and then dismiss it from your mind. Prudent people have found peace of mind by arranging their own funeral services well in advance of need, in as much detail as they desire. This can include the cost and financing alternatives. Let us explain the advantages, without any obligation.

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

COPING MECHANISM Immediately following the death of a loved one, those in the deceased’s immediate family are likely to find themselves preoccupied with funeral and burial arrangements, financial concerns, and visits from friends and other family members. However, once this busy period subsides, grieving individuals are largely left alone with their grief at a time when they most need support. At this point, it is very helpful for the grief-stricken to share their memories and talk about their loss. To help in this process, it may be advisable to join a grief support group or engage in grief counseling with a therapist. The grieving process is an individual path that need not be undertaken alone. The caring staff at KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME understands the importance of providing support to those who have experienced a loss. We are here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. We have been serving our community with pride for many years. QUOTE: “Grief, no matter where it comes from, can only be resolved by connecting to other people.” Thomas Horn

Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Go Easy On The Alcohol Fans of the AMC television series “Mad Men” might feel the best business deals are those consummated over a couple of bottles of scotch. Though that might have been the norm in the 1960s, such an approach is largely outdated. A sipping drink, such as a glass of wine, is most appropriate, and limit yourself to one or two glasses. If the waiter is liberal with the refills and the client is taking full advantage, don’t be afraid to excuse yourself from the table and discreetly ask the server to stop refilling glasses or offering another bottle.
