Popelka, DDS, MPH, MAGD, of Canandaigua, NY, received the association’s Mastership Award during the AGD 2016 annual meeting, which took place July 14 to 17 in Boston, MA. Appointment companions are a smart move Visits to a physician are just one step people make in an effort to improve their well-being. While it’s important that everyone visit their physicians at least once a year for a checkup, seniors may need to see their physicians more frequently than other age groups. When visiting the doctor, it is easy for anyone to miss important components of what the doctor is saying, and it’s just as easy to misunderstand certain instructions or medication information. Seniors who bring companions along to appointments with their physicians can reduce the risk of misunderstanding advice or diagnoses given by their doctors. Data from U.S. News and World Report states that about one-third of seniors still living on their own take a companion with them to their routine doctor’s office visits. Companions are typically spouses, but they can include children or other family members as well. Patients may find there are many advantages to bringing someone along to an appointment. And companions may want to learn more about patients’ goals at each appointment prior to going along so they can prepare and know how to help during the appointment. Listen People tend to forget at least half of what they hear in the doctor’s office, says the Archives of Internal Medicine. This tendency may be increased when patients are nervous about the potential outcome of their visits. Bringing a companion along means that both people are actively listening. Together, the information they’ve heard can combine to provide a full account of the visit.
SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY The color green is everywhere come St. Patrick’s Day, but celebrants may be surprised to learn that blue is the color that was once most affiliated with St. Patrick himself. Numerous paintings depict St. Patrick wearing blue vestments. But green is the color now most instantly associated with Ireland, which is widely referred to as the “Emerald Isle.” Ireland’s lush countryside and rolling green hills attract millions of visitors each year. The color green can be found just about everywhere on St. Patrick’s Day, even if Patrick himself was partial to blue.

Taking notes Companions can jot down important notes about the appointment, such as dates and times for follow-up visits, medication advice and any other instructions that may be forgotten once the patient leaves the office. Companions can later translate the jargonheavy language of a physician into an understandable language the patient can fully understand. Medical history Sometimes a companion can be a useful resource, calling a doctor’s attention to a patient’s prior hospitalizations and illnesses. Companions can even call attention to any medications the patient is currently taking. Serving as an advocate Very often a companion can operate as a patient advocate, clarifying questions or getting further information out of a doctor if the patient is hesitant to ask. If the information isn’t clear, the companion can raise red flags or ask to have the instructions put in a different light. Translation Sometimes patients need companions who speak their native languages when their physicians do not. People are learning that bringing a family member or friend along to doctors’ appointments can be a smart way to make the most of doctor/patient interactions.

It is easy for motorists to take their tires for granted w hen everything is w orking correctly. W heels and suspension systems bear the w eight of cars and trucks and must bear the brunt of rough roads, pot holes and any additional obstacles, so some w ear and tear is to be expected. M any drivers know to monitor their tire pressure, but it’s also important to check for w orn treads and inspect tires for punctures or damage. Proper tire alignment and balance also is essential for a comfortable and smooth ride.

DID YOU KNOW? If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many calories as 30 minutes of aerobics.

Pruning t rees a job best lef t t o t he pros Bountiful, healthy trees can be beautiful to behold and important contributors to a thriving environment. According to American Forests, a nonprofit conservation organization, a tree can absorb as much as 40 pounds of carbon dioxide per year and can sequester one ton of carbon dioxide by the time the tree reaches age 40. The United States Forest Service adds that trees placed properly around a home can reduce air conditioning and heating demands considerably. M any homeow ners are content to leave healthy trees alone. How ever, trees eventually must be pruned or removed if they become safety risks or pose other threats. Trees w ith roots that are damaging home foundations or those w ith limbs overhanging property limits or pow er lines can be troublesome. Although homeow ners can handle relatively minor tree maintenance, for a variety of reasons, many tree projects are best left to the professionals.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

* Look at the numbers. Renting might not be the best option. If you’re going to lose money each month, it might make more sense to sell, even if you won’t get your asking price. Consider all potential costs, including property taxes, income taxes on your tenants’ rent, maintenance, and the normal wear and tear your property will experience. Remember that you won’t be able to pocket all of the rent money; you will have to put a portion of it back into the property.

The low interest rates are sparking a rash of refinancing activity, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Rates have been below 5.5% for two years. For most people who have refinanced or purchased since then, there’s little benefit to refinancing. But when rates drop below 4.5%, then it’s worth looking into.

We are not to judge thrift solely by the test of saving or spending. If one spends what he should prudently save, that certainly is to be deplored. But if one saves what he should prudently spend, that is not necessarily to be commended. A wise balance between the two is the desired end. ~Owen Young

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 73 years old and lived on a boat in my 40s. Now, whenever I go to the dermatologist (two to three times each year), he “zaps” me about 20 times and burns off “cancer cells” or maybe “potential cancer cells.” Some of them have been cancer and were healed with MOHS procedure. While I am grateful for the care he gives me, I also sometimes feel that he zaps because each zap means more money. Can you please clarify this for me? -- G.B. ANSWER: I often get questions like this, where a patient has a concern that their doctor is performing unnecessary medical care for the purpose of enriching himself or herself. I always have trouble believing it, since I can’t really imagine it, but I recently read about an oncologist pleading guilty to treating with chemotherapy people who didn’t really have cancer, which shakes my faith in my profession (and colleagues). Still, I truly believe that, in your case and probably more than 99 percent of the time, the doctor is being extra cautious to treat you for the sole purpose of reducing your likelihood of developing an invasive skin cancer later on. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother lives in Florida. Her major discomfort is fatigue and no energy. I have asked her doctor to please give her a vitamin B-12 injection, even though her B-12, thyroid function, vitamin D and blood count are all in the normal range. Her doctor does not believe in B-12 injections. Do you think it might help? -- J.L. ANSWER: Vitamin B-12 is necessary for proper function in many tissues, but it is critical for blood cell production and neurologic function. B-12 deficiency causes an unmistakable anemia (called megaloblastic anemia) and can cause neurologic and psychiatric disturbances even in some people with no anemia. The blood test for B-12 is quite reliable. The major cause of B-12 deficiency is an autoimmune disease that prevents the stomach from making intrinsic factor, which is necessary for efficient absorption of B-12. B-12 can be absorbed orally by people with pernicious anemia by taking very high doses, such as 1 mg. This gives as good a replacement as injection. It was common 50 years ago to give B-12 injections as a “tonic.” However, it offers no advantages for people with normal B-12 levels beyond the placebo response. As I have noted many times, the placebo response can be very powerful, and 1 mg of B-12 orally is very safe. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard that drinking water with your meal is bad for you. Is this true? And if so, why? I have a dry mouth due to cancer treatment and must have water with everything I eat. Is something bad going to happen to me? I am otherwise healthy. -- R.G. ANSWER: It’s not true at all. Water is, generally speaking, the healthiest drink. It is possible to drink too much water, but it’s very hard to do so unless you are taking medications that affect your kidneys or you have excess anti-diuretic hormone, an unusual medical condition. Keep drinking your water. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Healthy Living Begins w ith Ample Sleep (Family Features) Taking steps to improve your mental and physical w ell-being may fall flat if you’re not spending enough time recharging your body. Sleep experts agree: adequate, regular sleep is essential for health and w ell-being. According to a new recommendation from the American Academy of Sleep M edicine (AASM ) and Sleep Research Society (SRS), adults should get seven or more hours of sleep per night to avoid the health risks associated w ith prolonged periods of inadequate sleep. “ Sleep is critical to health, along w ith a healthy diet and regular exercise,” said Dr. Nathaniel F. Watson, AASM president and moderator of the expert panel that developed the recommendation. “ Our consensus panel of 15 of the nation’s top sleep experts found that sleeping six or few er hours per night is inadequate to sustain health and safety in adults. We also agreed that seven or more hours of sleep per night is the recommended amount for all healthy adults.” No limit for certain individuals Recognizing that some adults need more sleep than others, the panel did not place a limit on how much sleep people should get per night. For example, people w ho may need nine or more hours of nightly sleep include young adults w ith grow ing bodies, individuals trying to make up for lost sleep, or those w ho are sick. “ M ore than a third of the population is not getting enough sleep, so the focus needs to be on getting at least seven hours of nightly sleep,” added Watson. “ In general w e w ant people to get more sleep, not less.”

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.

We are a group of Traffic Control/Crossing Guards hired September 2016 at Victor High School. We have gotten a lot of thank yous from faculty, parents, teachers and students alike. As the weather changes it does get colder as winter sets in. At Christmas time the faculty, parents and students gave us hand warmers, hot chocolate, donuts and other gift cards to show their appreciation. Well, the group of us, about 12 guards, wish to thank the faculty and parents for showing us as a group their appreciation. We want to send to all who appreciate us to a Big Thank You! Victor Crossing Guards
A couple weeks ago my granddaughter was to leave for, college on a Sunday. Her car started to make a noise; she stopped by Zirbel’s on Saturday, they weren’t open; however,
there was a man there getting ready to leave. He took her car in for a quick fix, checked oil and put air in the tires and sent her on her way. You can’t beat customer service like that. Thank you to whomever at Zirbel’s. Last night we had a problem with our electricity and my husband called our utility provider (National Grid) who sent out crews to assess the situation. These men were not only extremely polite, but were working in frigid temperatures, until after three in the morning. They were determined to keep working until the problem was solved. Yes, perhaps they do make good money, but no amount would be worth it to me to be hanging on to the top of a pole in the freezing temps! I think that too many times we overlook the work that these men and women do. University Eye employees went the extra mile demonstrating that they are committed to serving the needs of their clients! Thank you for taking the time to resolve a difficult circumstance for our dad! Your thoughtfulness had a positive impact on our family and will be remembered!!
To those who visit local cemetery after hours. Please be considerate and visit only during posted visiting hours. We know you are grieving, and we, as neighbors, keep watch for any suspicious activity. If you are visiting after 8pm, you are not following the rules. We know who the “regulars” are, and those who may have other intentions for being back there...beyond 8pm and into the wee hours of the morning. The area is patrolled by local police, and we have been instructed to report any suspicious activity. Please be considerate, to those who have loved ones buried there, and to us neighboring the cemetery. I recently had to have an ambulance ride to the local hospital, staffed by unpaid volunteers. The dispatcher also sent a paramedic from a local town. Medicare paid for the expense of the ambulance thankfully. A few weeks later I received a bill for the paramedic service - $1700 (for
30 minutes of time). As a retired Emergency nurse I was appalled at the amount, especially since he was unable to start an IV, did a minimal history and seemed to be very unhappy to be there at 3am. The amount is in excess of my retirement income by several hundred dollars! Everyone please be aware that ‘ALS care’ may not be covered by Medicare and is an out of pocket expense whether the care is good or not.
While at a local store, a customer had a shopping cart with about 20 items sectioned into 7 clusters. I was VERY patient but being the only 2 people in the store and after you looked right at me while I was holding my 1 item the least you could have said was “want to go ahead of me?” I waited for 10 minutes while you made your returns, used your coupons and confused the cashier so much that she gave me a “help me” look. That’s when I just gently said, “do you think I can just have my 1 item checked out?” to which she yelled wait your **** turn. Moral of the story.....she was in her 70’s and I’m in my 50’s....so much for respecting your elders, huh?

FINANCING A FUNERAL One way to pay for a funeral is to prefund it with a “payable on death” account (or “Totten trust”) at a bank or credit union. With this account, the owner names a beneficiary, who inherits the funds of the account when the account owner dies. These popular accounts provide a way to effectively transfer money upon death without undergoing probate court proceedings. There are also “pre-need” plans offered by funeral homes that can be used to lock in some or all of the cost of a funeral at current prices. In some cases, the consumer must purchase an insurance policy with the funeral home named as beneficiary or the money must be held in a statemanaged trust account. Perhaps you have specific requests regarding the details of your commemorative service, or you simply want to alleviate your loved ones from having to make those decisions. You may also have a budget within which you must stay. At KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, our preneed options allow you to choose your service details ahead of time, while locking in costs to keep things within your means. To learn more, contact us at (585) 346-5401 and schedule an initial, confidential consultation and tour of our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY.

QUOTE: “Perhaps they are not stars but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones shines down to let us know they are happy.” - Eskimo legend
I lit a white candle next to a red vase of fresh flowers. Your deep respect for the Billy Corgan philosophy of those of us who want to be free. You loved nature walks, as we had so often. I’m sure you fed the birds today. They will sing your song for you. My cats will purr next to you because they love you there. Today’s sun will shine in a thousand rays coming together over your name. The moon will keep changing while we look at it together. The canopy of stars will light up a path for you to walk along the sweet flowing river.

“The secret of happiness is curiosity…” ~ Norman Douglas Boredom is certainly one of the worst of afflictions. Try to imagine how the dreary hours must drag when one is totally bored! Happily, there is no reason why anyone should ever be bored. In this wonderful world there are so many wonders we can explore… so many more delightful things to know about than we can possibly investigate. It starts with childhood. The curious child is happy as he inquires and learns. There is no reason why we should ever lose this childlike thirst for knowledge, especially since curiosity leads to happiness. We are pleased that most of the families that come to us do so because of the recommendation of friends whom we have been privileged to serve. Ask your friends about us.
