INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SAINT PATRICK Despite growing up in a family with strong ties to organized religion, Saint Patrick himself was not raised in a particularly religious household. Though his grandfather was a member of the clergy and his mother was a close relative of St. Martin of Tours, Saint Patrick’s childhood home was not especially religious nor was it one that placed a strong emphasis on education. In fact, Saint Patrick admitted later in life that his lack of formal education had long been a source of embarrassment for him.

PATRICK’S DAY While corned beef has become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States, the corned beef eaten in the United States is not the corned beef familiar to people in Ireland. That’s because the corned beef eaten in the U.S. is largely from kosher Jewish butchers, whose corned beef is made from brisket, a tougher cut of meat taken from the front of the animal, whereas the corned beef produced in Ireland comes from the hindquarter.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

226-3950 DID YOU KNOW ? Exercise is a great w ay to maintain a healthy mind and body. M any people begin a new year by making resolutions to lose w eight or build musc le. Too often, how ever, men and w omen get stuck in an exercise rut, follow ing the same exercise routine w eek after w eek. Not only can this be boring, fitness experts advise that it’s nec essary to c hange an exercise routine periodically to continue to see results. It’s one reason w hy many fitness clubs unveil new classes every few w eeks. Just w hen you master the choreography of a class, it’s time to change! W ith repetition, the body adapts and grow s accustomed to the routine, using less energy as a result. That can affect your ability to lose w eight. Changing your w orkout forces your body to w ork harder, producing better results. If you exercise w ith a trainer, discuss w ays to modify your normal routine to surprise your body. Inc reased intensity, interval training, adding sprints to running, taking different classes, or even increasing the frequency of your w orkouts may do the trick.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.

8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the

toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

H O R O SC O P E S ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You could have some problems with doubters who don’t share your enthusiasm for that new project you’re supporting. But use the facts to win them over to your side. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Someone is impressed by how you managed to get your case to the right people, despite attempts to keep you on the outside looking in. Expect to hear more about this. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Good for you -- your gift for seeing both sides of a dispute helps cool down a potentially explosive workplace situation. Some family-related tensions also begin to ease. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your determination to prove yourself is put to the test by midweek. Counting all the positive factors you have going for you will help you get over your selfdoubt. Good luck. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Several co-workers are still determined to resist coming over to your side. But don’t let that stop you from presenting your proposal to the people who count. Stay the course. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might prefer to be taken on faith and not have to prove yourself. But the truth is, you need to offer more facts if you hope to persuade people to accept what you say. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family situation takes an unwelcome turn. While others might be looking around for answers, you’ll soon sort it all out logically, and the matter will be resolved. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Someone might try to create doubt about your reliability for his or her own agenda. But your reputation and your colleagues’ long-standing faith in you saves the day. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unexpected change of plans forces you to come up with an alternative by the end of the week. Look for colleagues to offer valuable suggestions. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Nothing upsets the Goat as much as broken promises. But before you vent your anger, consider that this could ultimately prove to be a blessing in disguise. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) An old workplace problem you thought you had solved for good resurfaces. But this time, co-workers will take a more active role in helping you deal with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful not to be misled by a negative reaction to one of your more important projects. If you believe in it, then it has worth and is, therefore, worth staying with. BORN THIS WEEK: Everyone appreciates your gift for finding beauty, even where it seems least likely to exist. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

People Really Are Allergic to Cold --DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible to be allergic to the cold weather and temperature changes? My son is 23 years old, and when he goes out in the cold, he breaks out in hives. What can he do? -- K.R. ANSWER: This sounds exactly like cold urticaria, which isn’t an allergy, but is similar in some ways. Doctors may test this by placing an ice cube (in a plastic bag with water) on the skin (usually the forearm) for five minutes, then watch the skin as it rewarms. If a hive develops (with raised skin and redness), that confirms the diagnosis. Cold urticaria can be associated with some infections (Lyme disease, hepatitis and HIV, among others) and with celiac disease. People with cold urticaria need to worry about systemic reactions. Avoiding cold (especially swimming in cold water) is critical, but even cold beverages can cause a serious systemic reaction, including swelling of the mouth and throat. Even anaphylaxis, a life-threatening collapse of the circulatory system, can develop. Many people with severe cold urticaria carry an epinephrine autoinjector in case of emergency. Antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec), are the best pharmacologic treatment. Experts in cold urticaria include allergists and dermatologists. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Whenever someone is ill with most diseases, they are usually prescribed a drug or a medicine, or a pharmaceutical product. Why is it that cancer patients are treated with “chemo,” or “chemotherapy,” rather than one of the above? Is there a difference, or is it just semantics? Nobody I’ve asked seems to have an answer. -- D.G. ANSWER: To be honest, I was confused too, until medical school, where I learned that “chemotherapy” is just another word for a drug or medicine intended to treat a condition. We just normally reserve the term for drugs used to treat cancer. Although we tend to think of the side effects of chemotherapy as horrific, and some certainly are the most toxic substances we ever use, they vary widely in how well they are tolerated.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: • Trouble communicating or finding words. • Difficulty completing complex tasks. • Challenges with planning and organization. • Episodes of confusion and disorientation. • Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party. • Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: In August I had open repair of my right rotator cuff. I was told it was a severe tear with bone and tendon involvement. I am 67, and the recovery has been a long one. If you can believe it, even with physical therapy and pain management, I am still uncomfortable at times. I have a stupid question that I hope you can answer. Ever since surgery, I have had to sleep on my unaffected side. Is it OK for me to finally try sleeping on my right side? I don’t have another appointment at the orthopedic office. I am embarrassed, as it is one question I haven’t asked. -- C.V. ANSWER: It’s not a stupid question at all. I don’t think you will damage the surgery repair by sleeping on the shoulder now, and you certainly can try it to see if it feels uncomfortable. I also would recommend you continue the exercises your physical therapists gave you. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Newly Published Local Poet - An Inspiration By Joyce Shutts Evelyn Marie Shoots of Henrietta is a true inspiration. Through her 90+ years, she has been a wordsmith & poet. Her dream has been to publish a book of her poetry. That dream came true in late November 2017 thanks to the Historian at West Henrietta Baptist Church. Bonita Healy compiled & published the book entitled “Grove of Grace.” The back cover quote follows. “During her more than 90 years of life, Evelyn Shoots has been bubbling with poetry that springs from her deep love of God, His creation, and the people who are blessed to be in her life. Here you will find peace, joy, and inspiration in the grove of grace she faithfully inhabits and shares.” The book contains an autobiography of this special lady’s life. It is available on Amazon.com, as well as from the author. Her poems have been published in “The LINK,” West Henrietta Baptist’s newsletter, and starting last year in the “Lake Country Echo.” She has had book signings at West Henrietta Baptist & the Henrietta Senior Center.

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

HONORING VETERANS “No one is more unhappy than he who never had bad luck; he could never test himself...” ~ Seneca We may pity the poor soul who has consistent bad luck but he has one advantage over his fellows who have had nothing but good fortune… he knows that he can survive the worst that fortune has in store for him. A Roman philosopher of the first century, Seneca recognized this seeming paradox. The person upon whom fortune continually smiles is made unhappy by uncertainty. Never having been tested, he wonders how he would manage if his good luck changed to bad. It may help to keep this in mind when we experience a run of bad luck. We have no “standard” service. Each family we serve has unique needs and we tailor our service to meet these. Our best references are from the families we have served.

To honor the memory of their service to their country, the casket of deceased veterans is draped with a U.S. burial casket flag. This custom, which began during the Napoleonic Wars, was accorded to the dead, who were carried from the battlefield on a caisson. When the U.S. flag covers a casket, it is placed so that the union blue field is at the head and over the left shoulder. It is not placed in the grave, nor is it ever allowed to touch the ground. The flag is presented to the next of kin at the end of the funeral, usually by the military chaplain. The flag may be presented to the veteran’s close friend or associate if requested. It’s important to take the time to acknowledge the uniqueness of the deceased: the individuality of their personality, and the uniqueness of their life’s path. Not just for them, but for you. It affirms the relationship, and leads to healing after loss. Honoring their life is truly an act of love. To learn more about our services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

How to stay flexible as you age Men and women may begin to feel less flexible as they get older. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, that loss of flexibility is because muscles lose both strength and elasticity as the body ages. A lack of flexibility can make men and women more vulnerable to certain types of injuries, including muscle strains and tears. While people might not be able to maintain the flexibility they enjoyed in their twenties, there are ways for them to combat age-related loss of flexibility. • Stretch frequently. Stretching is a great way to combat age-related loss of flexibility. Stretch major muscle groups, such as hamstrings and shoulder muscles, several times per week. When practicing static stretching, the goal is to gradually elongate the muscle being stretched before holding the elongated position, and ultimately allowing the muscle to return to resting position. As flexibility improves, elongated stretches can be held for 30 seconds. Avoid stretching muscles that are sore or injured, and discontinue a stretch if you feel pain or discomfort. • Include yoga in your exercise regimen. Practitioners of yoga typically love how this unique discipline that exercises the body while relaxing the mind improves their flexibility. Many yoga poses are designed to improve the strength and flexibility of muscles, and some physicians may even recommend yoga to aging patients. Yoga DVDs or streaming sessions can be great, but beginners may want to visit yoga studios or sign up for classes at their gyms so instructors can personally ensure they are doing each pose correctly. As their flexibility improves, men and women can try more difficult poses and classes if they so desire. • Get in the pool. Swimming is another activity that can help aging men and women improve their flexibility. Strength-training exercises are an important component of a well-balanced exercise regimen, but such workouts tend to focus on one or two muscle groups at a time. That means other muscle groups may be inactive and tighten up as a result. Swimming works the entire body, which helps all muscle groups stay loose and flexible. One or two swimming sessions per week can contribute to great gains in overall flexibility, especially for men and women who remember to stretch when they get out of the pool. Flexibility may decrease as men and women age, but there are various ways to combat the natural loss of flexibility.

A big thank you to Dr. Robert S. Marchese, a Batavia dentist who offers a discount to all Veterans who served this country in our military. He happens to be the only dentist in Batavia to do so. He doesn't have to offer that but he respects what Veterans have given up (time out of their lives) in support of their country. I have gone to Dr. Marchese for a couple of years now and he not only does a great job, he's very friendly, asks about my family, and saves me and I'm sure other Veterans a lot of money. This past Veterans Day in November he offered free cleanings for Veterans. Ronald Jackett, USAF Veteran

I was walking my friend's dog the other day. I saw a small gray bag by a tree. I KNEW what it was having seen them before. If you clean up after your dog [Which you are supposed to do], PLEASE take it with you! Don't just leave it laying around for others to pick up. Think about it

What many Veterans, of whatever branch of service they were in, don’t know is that if they take a copy of their DD Form 214 with them and go to the Genesee County Clerk’s Office they’ll receive free, a card offering discounts from many businesses in the county and a brochure (flyer) from the “Return the Favor” program. Some merchants listed offer as much as 25% off to those who have served their country. My hats off to them! Ronald Jackett, USAF Veteran

Many thanks and deep appreciation to the couple who answered prayers from me and a handicapped gentleman. I had put a request in the Penny Saver looking for a scooter and 3 days after it came out I got a call saying they had one available. Thank you so much Gerry and Rita! The newfound freedom in the scooter is being enjoyed and we are awaiting summer for adventures. God Bless you both! Shirley

Haiku for our dog Tyson! Squirrels are outside. Tyson sees them off he sprints. Never catching one.

~ what would it look like if everyone did the same thing? Pick up after the dog, and just leave the open bag for someone else to pick up?

anyone can make mistakes!!! So much for the Christmas spirit?! It's time this country lightened up a little.

wherever they feel like it to drop off their kids, please stop... All you are doing is making the parents who are trying to follow the rules mad. The parking lot sucks, yes, there are a lot of cars/people, yes, but rules are there for a reason. Just because the safety officers are not out patrolling doesn't mean you are not affecting other parents just trying to get their kid(s) to school safely.

I recently stopped at [coffee shop] for a donut before I took my 2 y/o son into daycare and before I went to work... of course I didn't want to take my son into [coffee shop] when he was fussy and crying, so I left him in the car (with running heat!!! He wasn't cold!!) while I enjoyed a donut and caught up with a friend. Meanwhile some jerk called the cops on me for having my son relaxing in the car and not only was I questioned, but I was late to work!! I am a GOOD mom and

I wonder if people realize how frustrating or dangerous it is not to have your house number on your mailbox or house. It makes it almost impossible for emergency personnel or bus drivers to locate the houses. So please purchase some decent size numbers and put them on both sides of your mailbox. To all those parents out there who feel the need to disregard traffic laws to cut traffic off just to get to school, and then those parents who stop their car

I live in a neighborhood with sidewalks. I always make sure I clear the snow from the sidewalk after a storm. Most people don't even bother to do it. Please clear your sidewalk. Your neighbors would appreciate it.

Thousands of injuries occur to children and pets who get hurt around mowers. It’s best if children and pets remain indoors when homeowners are mowing or using other power equipment that may kick up debris. Children under the age of 12 may not have the strength or ability to operate lawn tools. Also, never make a game of riding a child on a riding mower. Nobody under the age of 16 should operate riding lawn mowers.

Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

Emerging trends in crafting – Natural elements: Crafters are taking their cues from nature, and you’re certain to find natural elements, such as wood, bark and burlap, in craft projects. Distressed finishes on furniture and photo frames will still demand attention. Do-it-yourself projects, such as turning a slab of a tree trunk into a table or upcycling wooden shipping palettes into shelving, also will grow in popularity. Whenever working on designs that feature natural materials, try to repurpose elements whenever possible for the most rustic, authentic feel.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Cut back on printing. Printing documents used to be the most effective way to share them with coworkers and clients. But nowadays printing is one of the least efficient and least eco-friendly ways to share documents. Instead of printing documents to show coworkers, create PDFs and email the PDFs instead. And rather than mailing contracts to prospective clients, email contracts that accept e-signatures, ultimately storing the contracts on your file server rather than in a dusty old filing cabinet.

TRIVIA TEST By Fifi Rodriguez

1. LITERATURE: What American poet wrote the line, “My candle burns at both ends; it will not last the night”? 2. MATH: The Roman numerals MCDXIV are equal to what Arabic number? 3. MONEY: Which U.S. president’s image appears on the $50 bill? 4. MEASUREMENTS: What does a “candela” measure? 5. MOVIES: What was the original name of Disney’s Mickey Mouse? 6. HISTORY: What war is the Battle of Leipzig associated with? 7. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: What is the birthstone associated with March? 8. GEOGRAPHY: What is the most populous city in the world? 9. NOBEL PRIZES: Who was the first American to win a Nobel Prize? 10. U.S. PRESIDENTS: Which president had a yacht titled the “Honey Fitz”?

Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there are a handful of ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.
