A National Award is Earned by Dr. Sandro R. Popelka DDS, MPH, MAGD The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that Sandro R. Popelka, DDS, MPH, MAGD, of Canandaigua, NY, received the association’s Mastership Award during the AGD 2016 annual meeting, which took place July 14 to 17 in Boston, MA. The Mastership Award is the AGD’s highest honor and one of the most respected designations within the profession. To earn this award, Dr. Popelka completed 1,100 hours of dental continuing education. As a Mastership Award recipient, Dr. Popelka joins more than 2,300 active AGD Masters who have gone above and beyond the basic requirements to care for their patient’s oral health. “This award requires an extraordinary amount of time and effort,” says AGD Immediate Past President W. Mark Donald, DMD, MAGD. “Dr. Popelka should be commended for his unflagging commitment to continuing education, which allows him to provide the best possible dental care and oral health education to his patients.” Dr. Popelka graduated from University of Rochester in 2005 and currently practices dentistry in Geneseo & Canandaigua. He and his wife, Anna, have 3 children, Giannina, Adriano, and Marcello.

1. Taste Real Flavors The fruits and vegetables you buy at the farmers market are the freshest and tastiest available. Fruits are allowed to ripen fully in the field and are brought directly to you—no long-distance shipping. This food is as real as it gets—fresh from the farm.

2. Enjoy the Season From savoring produce at the peak of freshness to meeting the people who grow your food, there are countless reasons to support farmers markets. Here are just a few! Clarkson

This special feeling towards fruit, its glory and abundance, is I would say universal.... We respond to strawberry fields or cherry orchards with a delight that a cabbage patch or even an elegant vegetable garden cannot provoke. ~Jane Grigson

The food you buy at the farmers market is fresh and delicious and reflects the truest flavors. As you look forward to asparagus in spring, savor sweet corn in summer, or bake pumpkins in autumn, you reconnect with the earth, the weather, and the turning of the season.

3. Support Family Farmers Family farmers need your support, now that large agribusiness dominates food production in the U.S. Buying directly from farmers gives them a better return for their produce and gives them a fighting chance in today’s globalized economy.

4. Protect the Environment Food in the U.S. travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to your plate. All this shipping uses large amounts of natural resources (especially fossil fuels), contributes to pollution, and creates trash with extra packaging. Food at the farmers market is transported shorter distances and is generally grown using methods that minimize the impact on the earth.

5. Nourish Yourself Most food found at the farmers market is minimally processed, and many of our farmers go to great lengths to grow the most nutritious produce possible by using sustainable techniques, picking produce right before the market, and growing heirloom varieties.

6. Discover the Spice of Life: Variety At the farmers market you find an amazing array of produce that you don’t see in your average supermarket: red carrots, a rainbow of heirloom tomatoes, purple cauliflower, stinging nettles, green garlic, watermelon radishes, quail eggs, maitake mushrooms, and much, much more.

[Celery] is as fresh and clean as a rainy day after a spell of heat. It crackles pleasantly in the mouth.... it should be eaten alone, for it is the only food which one really wants to hear oneself eat. ~A.A. Milne (1882–1956), “A Word for Autumn,” Not That It Matters

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Reader Drank Mercury From a Thermometer! DEAR DR. ROACH: You probably have never gotten a question like this. How much mercury is in an old thermometer? A month ago, I wasn’t feeling well, so I took my temperature with an old thermometer that seemed to be taking too long to work. Long story short, I broke it into my hot cup of coffee, which I drank before I realized that I had broken the thermometer. I didn’t finish the whole cup. What happens to mercury when it’s in hot liquid? Does it sink or float? Is it visible? Does it have a taste or smell? What will happen to me? I didn’t call the poison center or my doctor; I was too embarrassed. I did end up being sick for a long time. I had a fever (I got a new thermometer), sore throat, terrible headache that lasted for days, my blood pressure was elevated and I vomited on the fifth day after ingesting the mercury. I don’t know if some of the symptoms were from a reaction to the Nyquil I had taken, which has never bothered me before. Any suggestions? -- Anon. ANSWER: I wasn’t embarrassed to call the Poison Control Center at 800-222-1222 -- you should have called immediately, too. They confirmed the teaching I received: The mercury in a thermometer is elemental mercury, not the toxic organic mercury salts, so it would not normally be absorbed. Mercury is very heavy, much denser than water, so it would have sunk to the bottom of the coffee quickly, and odds are you didn’t even ingest much of it. It stays bright-silver, but you probably would not have seen it through the dark coffee. The expert I spoke with was just as concerned about the broken glass you might have ingested. I suspect the symptoms you describe have nothing to do with the mercury. Even though the news I give you is good, I still would go to your doctor and discuss it. If someone came in to me with these symptoms, I would look for other reasons for them, not mercury. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 68-year-old man with numbness in my hand for the past seven years. A neurologist diagnosed me with carpal tunnel syndrome and prescribed special gloves. I have no hand pain, only numbness when I elevate my arms, which also causes neck and shoulder pain. What can I do to get some relief? -- B.W. ANSWER: Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist. It may cause numbness and pain in the hands. The pain can travel up the arm, but rarely affects the arm above the elbow, and neck/shoulder pain makes me concerned that the nerve compression causing your hand numbness might be originating in your neck. It is possible you have both carpal tunnel syndrome and a “pinched nerve” in the neck, but compression of the nerve in the neck could cause all the symptoms you are telling me about. A careful exam usually sorts this out, but an MRI may be necessary to confirm. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Don’t resist them that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forw ard in w hatever w ay they like. - Lao Tzu Shirley Ann Lindsay (Bishop) May 2, 2017 Livonia: Peacefully, surrounded by her family, on May 2, 2017 at age 86 years. Predeceased by her husband Floyd Lindsay, her son Timothy “Floyd” Lindsay, and her brothers; Richard, William, and James “Larry” Bishop. Survived by her daughters; Shirley Ann LindsayDobrowolski of St. Petersburg, FL and Barbara Lindsay-Briggs of Canandaigua. Also survived by grandchildren; Ronnie (Emily) Briggs, Gabriel Briggs (Jillian), Moriah (Michael) Schojan, Lindsay (Eric) Heneka, Austin and Heath Dobrowolski; 9 great-grandchildren; brothers, Jerry (Nancy) Bishop and Charles Bishop; 2 sisters in law, Doris Bishop of Caledonia and Pat Bishop of Avon. Many nieces, nephews, and friends. Shirley was born on July 31, 1930 in Rush, New York to Agnes and Fred Bishop. She was the big sister to 5 younger brothers. She often regaled her children with the stories of her childhood and what it was like to be the eldest of 5 mischievous little brothers. She both attended and graduated from Avon Central School. After graduation, she attended Continental School of Beauty. Shirley was in her teens when she met her future husband and the “love of her life”, Floyd, at the Avon theatre where she was an usherette. They were married on May 23, 1953. After their marriage, she and Floyd lived in Caledonia, Avon, and Rochester before settling into their home in Livonia. She was a very loving and caring wife, mother, daughter, sister, and aunt. Along with her husband Floyd, Shirley was very active in the American Legion. She served in the Legion Women’s Auxiliary for many years where she helped with the Annual Children’s Christmas Party, the Sunday Morning Breakfasts, preparing gift boxes for active duty soldiers and veterans, and marching in the Memorial Day Parades. Shirley was a gifted seamstress and shared this knowledge and skill with her daughters and granddaughter. She was very creative and enjoyed writing poetry, refinishing antique furniture, canning the vegetables from her garden, knitting, and other various arts and crafts. Shirley and Floyd both loved camping and many summers were spent camping in the Adirondacks with their three children and later with their grandchildren. Many will remember her for the great service and warm greeting she offered her customers at Maxim’s restaurant where she waited table for so many years. In the 1980’s, Shirley briefly operated and taught at a small Aerobics Studio in Livonia. Later in her life, Shirley attended Monroe Community College where she took several classes in interior design. Shirley loved all her family, but especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was ever present at their ball games, dance recitals, graduations, birthday parties, and holidays. Shirley often traveled to Florida where she also loved spending time with her son and daughter and grandchildren. Shirley truly loved life and her family and it was evident by her generosity and willingness to give so much of herself to anyone who asked. Her passing will forever leave a huge void in the hearts and lives of those of us who knew her best and loved her most.

Mary E. Krest May 9, 2017 Livonia: Peacefully on May 9, 2017, at age 92 years, at the Avon Nursing Home. Predeceased by her husband Robert J. Krest Sr. and her brother Carl Hirschman. Survived by children; Robert “Hutt” (Mary) Krest Jr., Ricky Krest (Renda Kahlil), Russell Krest, and David “Wimp” Carey. Grandson Jonathan Krest, brother-in-law Archa Krest, sisters-inlaw Annie Krest & Sally Krest, many nieces & nephews, and dear friends. Mary was an amazing person, teacher, supporter, provider, friend, and mother. Not just a mother to her three boys, but a mother to whoever came in through the door at the family home on High Street. She touched a lot of people’s lives, and made the world a little better just by being here. She will be missed by many, and some more so. She has left so many fond memories and experiences that will live forever. She was a remarkable woman, a great friend, and the best mother. Friends may call on Saturday, May 13th, from 1-3pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, where a memorial service will follow calling hours at 3pm. Interment will be held privately. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com

CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Fund renovations at museums, schools or arts centers. Another way to memorialize a loved one is to make a donation to his or her favorite organization. Donors’ names routinely are memorialized on walls, floors or plaques on buildings.

“One of the secrets of a happy life is to forgive everybody everything every night before you go to bed…” ~ from Ann Landers

It’s an imperfect world we all live in and no doubt we all experience situations that give us good cause to feel hurt sometimes very deeply hurt. Somehow we feel that if we “nurse our grudge” and vow never to forgive the one who hurts us, we are somehow getting even. Actually, such repressed hatreds hurt us much more than anyone else. Even if we fail to understand why someone has acted hatefully toward us, if we can forgive them and forget the incident, we have established control and we will be happier for doing so. We serve all faiths, creeds and fraternal orders with perfectly appropriate services. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds.

Jerry Dougherty - Jeff Deragon - Jim Murray

A Graveside Service to Celebrate Shirley’s Life will be held on Saturday, May 27th, at 11am at Union Cemetery, Big Tree Road, Livonia, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Shirley’s memory to the Harrison-Lee American Legion Post 283, 3850 Federal Road, Livonia, NY 14487.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

EXPRESSIONS OF DEEP SORROW It is vitally important that those suffering the deep sorrow that comes from the loss of a loved one be given ways to express their emotions. This universal need has given rise to mourning rituals such as funerals, visiting hours, and related customs of dress and behavior, which help the bereaved cope with their grief. These practices differ widely between countries and ethnic groups, encompassing everything from celebrations and feasts to periods of wailing. In this country, the observance of mourning customs has declined steadily over the years to the point where many bereaved individuals may feel deprived of due recognition of their grief. Proper funeral preplanning can introduce a process by which sorrow can be fully expressed. There are numerous ways to incorporate the participation of family and friends into the commemoration service of a loved one. Doing so provides those individuals with a platform to acknowledge the deceased and to share unique remembrances with other mourners. To learn more, contact KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME today at (585) 346-5401. We’ll arrange a tour for you of our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. We are here for you. QUOTE: “My feet will want to walk to where you are sleeping but I shall go on living.” ~ Pablo Neruda

Canine Health: Getting To the Heart of It (Family Features) According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 43 million dogs are estimated to be overweight or obese, and a primary risk of excess weight, in pets, is heart disease. And, just as humans often adopt a natural diet to help support cardiac health, feeding natural foods can also benefit their canine companions. When it comes to canine heart health, there are two key things for pet parents to consider: feed a balanced diet that is rich in highquality, natural foods and encourage regular exercise to help maintain lean body condition.

Did You Know? Animals verbalize in many different ways to communicate. One thing cat owners may notice is that cats have a tendency to meow as a form of speaking with humans. However, according to the North Shore Animal League America, cats almost never meow at other cats, as meowing is a sound generally reserved for interacting with humans. Cat owners should talk back to their cats often, as cats enjoy hearing their own names and their owners’ voices.

Add Little Touches - An old six-paned window with cracked and worn wood can become a frame for family photos. Wood from an old barn can be used for a coffee table or fireplace mantel. Mix up the chairs around your dining room table by blending both modern and contemporary styles. These little changes in a room’s decor might not be immediately obvious, but as visitors look around the room, they’ll notice the special touches you’ve made by mixing two distinctive styles.

That’s because each system is broken down into three easy-to-follow steps - starting with Step 1: adding a sanitizer (our best products feature patented SilkGuard® Technology) to quickly kill bacteria followed by Step 2: using the recommended shock to destroy contaminants and Step 3: adding an algicide to stop algae before it starts. Simple, huh? Visit us today to learn more on the simplicity of following a BioGuard system.

Zamperini floated on a raft in shark-infested waters for more than a month before being picked up by the Japanese and spending the next two years in brutal prison camps.

greeting new customers, chatting and hugging with regulars and praying for those who expressed a need. In 2015 they and a few other local organizations experienced problems due to a charcoal composition change by the manufacturer. This caused delays, wait times and frustration for many spoiling what had generally been good experiences all around. I know a couple came back last year changing the charcoal used while others elected to use catering services. I am happy to hear that Faith UMC will be back with their Chicken Barbecue this year. Apple crumb pie for me. Yum! Please go out and support the many local organizations in their fundraising efforts. We need each other. I happened to glance out my window on a very windy day in the village of LeRoy and saw two young ladies stop to pick up a recycle bin that had blown into the street and move it back to the curb and then they picked up the items that had spilled out of the bin and put them back into it! It was refreshing to see, thanks for helping make our neighborhood cleaner and brighter, great job girls!

privacy. Are you purposely teaching your children to be disrespectful, inconsiderate and rude? If so, congratulations on a job well done.

To the person who wrote about NOT burning wood in your fireplace. Are you kidding? Fireplaces are used to burn wood, to heat and to enjoy. What did people do to heat homes back when electricity was not around? As long as people are cleaning out their chimneys and following safe fire laws, I cannot find a reason that your vent was necessary. It amazes me that there are a significant number of parents who fail to teach their child good morals and values. Too many parents give their child toys such as paint guns, dirt bikes, and drones but never spend the time teaching them the legal proper use and to make sure they are considerate to their neighbors. There are even parents who knowingly allow their child to trespass on private land and even harass neighbors when they complain about the noise, destruction and invasion of

The 2/24/17 issue had several absurd complaints. Wow, someone brought a dog with them to get gas and it barked? How long did you have to listen to it, three whole minutes? Maybe they were taking their dog someplace. Get over yourself. Don’t tell people to bring your dogs inside, I have a husky and they are comfortable down to -30°. They don’t want to come inside. Finally, you can’t breathe because someone down the road is burning wood in their fireplace? Maybe that’s the only way they can afford to heat their house. Why don’t you buy a gas mask or move someplace else, and stop trying to make everyone else deal with your issues. Get over yourselves people, this is pathetic. Sister and niece cleaned out man’s house! Took all his furniture, clothes and food! Now he has nothing! Thank you, family! The man is not dead yet!

Treatments for Alzheimer’s disease continue to evolve Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most prevalent types of dementia in the world, affecting an estimated 35.6 million people all over the globe, and that number is expected to double in 20 years. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America estimates that as many as 5.1 million Americans may be living with Alzheimer’s disease. Australian company Actinogen Medical says Alzheimer’s is Australia’s second biggest killer. According to a 2012 study commissioned by the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, 747,000 Canadians were living with cognitive impairment, which included, but was not limited to, dementia. People with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia may experience a decline in mental function severe enough to reduce their ability to perform everyday activities. Some of the cognitive functions that may be impaired include memory, communication and language, ability to pay attention, reasoning and judgement, emotional control, and social behavior. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, nor is there an effective long-term way to prevent potential mental decline. However, that has not stopped scores of researchers and medical teams that continue to study the efficacy of different drugs and therapies. The following are some of the more promising options in the works. Leukine A safety trial on the drug Leukine already is underway at the Colorado University Anschutz Medical Campus. “We found so far that Leukine is safe in people with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Huntington Potter, the director of Alzheimer’s research at the university. “That means it doesn’t

have the side effects that so many other Alzheimer’s drugs have had, which are swelling in the brain and bleeding into the brain.” Leukine has been successful in removing the plaque or amyloid along the outside of nerve cells in the brain of mice. Researchers do not know the exact mechanism for removal, but the drug is working and working quickly. Leukine also may be helping the brain repair itself. The Alzheimer’s Association has donated $1 million toward financing the costs of the next phase of this trial. Insulin Neurologists at Rush University Medical Center are testing a type of insulin that is inhaled through a nasal spray to see if it improves cognition and memory function in people with mild cognitive impairment. “There is growing evidence that insulin carries out multiple functions in the brain and that poor regulation of insulin may contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Neelum Aggarwal, a neurologist at Rush and the lead investigator of the study. The 18-month clinical trial will study the nasal spray versus a placebo in 275 adults between the ages of 55 and 85. Xanamem Australian researchers at Actinogen Medical have begun trials of a new drug called Xanamem. More than 170 patients with mild dementia in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom will take part in the placebo-controlled 12-week trial. The medicine blocks the stress hormone cortisol in order to improve mental function for those with dementias. In 2015, an Edinburgh University study of mice showed reducing cortisol in the brain improved their memory and decreased the number of Alzheimer’sassociated amyloid plaques in the brain. Researchers continue to work as they seek a successful, longterm option for treating or preventing Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

D id you k now ? Earbuds enable music lovers to enjoy their favorite tunes uninterrupted and w ithout distracting othe rs around them. People often use earbuds w hile commuting to w ork, at the gym and even at home. But according t o hearing aid manufacturer Belltone, noise-induced hearing loss can occur by using earbuds at a high v olume for extended periods of time. Earbuds can put audio signals close to the inner ear, w hich is the equival ent of boosting it by nine decibels. Even moderately high volume can cause hearing loss. It’s important to keep the volume low and to take frequent breaks w hen using earbuds. Keep earbud volume below 60 percent and w ear them for no more than 60 minutes per day.

Follow-up. Companies with a table or booth at a career fair are going to receive an overwhelming amount of resumes, particularly with such high unemployment rates. That said, it’s a good idea for job seekers to do some follow-up with recruiters. Take their business cards and follow-up with them after the event. Call them that night and leave a voicemail thanking them for their time and insight, or e-mail them a thoughtful letter expressing similar sentiments of gratitude. Also, reiterate interest in the company and any available positions discussed during the career fair. Before hanging up the phone or sending the e-mail, be sure to promise a follow-up phone call during business hours, and make sure that phone call is made.
