still as SIMPLE as

1-2-3

When it comes to effortless pool care, BioGuard’s comprehensive pool care systems are simply the best. That’s because each system is broken down into three easy-to-follow steps - starting with Step 1: adding a sanitizer (our best products feature patented SilkGuard® Technology) to quickly kill bacteria followed by Step 2: using the recommended shock to destroy contaminants and Step 3: adding an algicide to stop algae before it starts. Simple, huh? Visit us today to learn more on the simplicity of following a BioGuard system.

Learn about cataracts to see more clearly Many people take their vision for granted until a problem arises that affects their ability to see. While certain conditions may occur suddenly, others develop more gradually and may not even be noticeable until the problem has progressed significantly. Cataracts are a common vision problem that is often associated with aging. The National Eye Institute says that, by age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. Prevent Blindness America says there are more cases of cataracts worldwide than there are of glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy combined. The American Optometric Association defines a cataract as a cloudy or opaque area in the normally clear lens of the eye. Depending on its size, cataracts can interfere with normal vision. They typically occur in people over the age of 55. A cataract can be present in one or both eyes. The lens is responsible for helping to focus light or an image on the retina. In a healthy lens, fluid and protein are arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear, offers NEI. However, as one ages, the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. Over time, this clouding may grow. Researchers also suspect there are other causes to cataracts, such as smoking or diabetes. In addition, wear and tear on the lens can develop into cataract clouding. Significant alcohol consumption, UV radiation, eye surgery, and high myopia also may contribute to cataract formation. All About Vision says the types of cataracts include: • Subcapsular cataract, which occurs at the back of the lens; • Nuclear cataract, which forms deep in the central zone of the lens; and • Cortical cataract, which starts as white opacities in the periphery of the lens and then grows inward.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

The Mayo Clinic advises that there are no known methods to prevent cataracts or slow their progression. But choosing a healthy diet full of antioxidants, quitting bad habits like smoking, managing diabetes, and having regular eye examinations can help. It’s also a good idea to wear sunglasses that block against UVA and UVB light when outdoors. Cataracts can cause blurring of vision and even make it difficult to see in bright conditions. Colors may seem faded, night vision may be adversely affected and glare may be problematic. The AOA says that early cataracts typically are not treated and changes to prescriptions may provide temporary visual improvement. If a cataract progresses to the point that it affects one’s ability to perform everyday tasks, surgery in which an artificial lens replaces the natural lens may be necessary. Learn more about cataracts by visiting www.nei.nih.gov, www.aoa.org, or www.allaboutvision.com.

OTHER HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.

SEEING IS BELIEVING WHEN IT COMES TO ROAD SAFETY (NAPSI)—Although properly functioning vehicle lights, wipers and mirrors allow for better visibility while driving, these items are all too often forgotten or ignored when people perform basic auto care, says the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Making sure that you can see and be seen on the road is essential to avoiding motor vehicle accidents, yet many motorists overlook simple maintenance steps that can improve driving visibility,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. Following a few auto care visibility tips can be illuminating, helping to ensure the safety of you, your passengers and other vehicles around you. • Replace any exterior or interior lights that are dimming, rapidly blinking or nonfunctioning and be sure headlights are correctly aimed. • Make sure that vehicle mirrors are clean and properly positioned. • Check windshield washer fluid level and, when it gets low, replace it. • Replace wiper blades if they show cracking or if they chatter or streak when operating. Don’t forget to check the rear wiper blade. • When in doubt, turn your lights on to help you see and help other drivers see you. Some places even have laws that require headlights to be on when windshield wipers are operating. • Don’t overdrive your headlights. Maintain a speed that will let you stop within the illuminated area; otherwise, you create a blind crash zone in front of your vehicle. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a free copy of the popular “Car Care Guide,” visit the council’s consumer education website at www.carcare.org.

Be A Host-a-Racer! Fairport, NY will host an overnight stop on the

2018 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty, Saturday, June 23. The Great Race, the world’s premier old car rally, will bring 120 of the world’s finest antique automobiles to town for the $150,000 event, with the first car rolling onto South Main Street downtown starting at 4:30 p.m.

Teams and cars from Japan, England, Germany, Canada and every corner of the United States will be participating in their vintage automobiles dating back as far as 1913. “There are more than 500 people just in our entourage from all around the world taking part in this incredible adventure,” director Jeff Stumb said. Along the route, competitors will travel through four states - New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine - and two Canadian provinces - New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The Great Race, which began 35 years ago, is not a speed race, but a time/speed/distance rally. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret check points along the way and are penalized one second for each second either early or late. As in golf, the lowest score wins. Cars start - and hopefully finish - one minute apart if all goes according to plan. The biggest part of the challenge other than staying on time and following the instructions is getting an old car to the finish line each day, organizers say. Each stop on the Great Race is free to the public and spectators will be able to visit with the participants and to look at the cars for several hours. It is common for kids to climb in the cars for a firsthand look. For more info, go to www.greatrace.com or contact Jeff Stumb at jeff@greatrace.com or 423-648-8542.

YORK DID YOU KNOW? While high school seniors on the cusp of graduating and moving on to college give ample thought to their college majors, many are likely to change majors at least once after enrolling in a college or university. According to the University of La Verne, between 50 and 70 percent of college students change majors at least once, and many of them will change their majors three times before they graduate. The University also reports that 50 percent of college graduates pursue careers that are not related to their majors. Career and personality assessments can help students determine which subjects they may want to study upon enrolling in a college or university. Such assessments can help students discover their interests, and then students can work with advisors and career counselors at their colleges or universities to find majors that align with those interests. High school seniors on their way to college in the coming months can rest easy that, even if they don’t know what to study when they arrive on college campuses this fall, many of their fellow freshmen are equally uncertain.

Paul Bagdon’s Journey to Working His Passion By Danielle Lorenzo Paul Bagdon was, as a medical malpractice case supervisor for years, working the clock and the corporate structure on a daily basis. During this time, he was able write a little, publishing a short story or an article here and there. Then, Bagdon made the gutsy decision to leave his position to focus on what he really loved to do, write. Paul Bagdon, who now resides at the Baird Nursing Home, still enjoys reading and composing stories. Bagdon said, “I knew if I never left and tried my hand at full-time writing, I would always regret it. If I didn’t go for it, I would be stuck somewhere, at 90 years of age, thinking, ‘I should have’.” Paul has sold roughly 50 books and over 250 of his short stories and articles have appeared in a variety of magazines. The writer also has many novels under pen names, one being Paige Lee Elliston. His first novel sale was a young adult science fiction series that was published by Ballantine Books fifteen years ago. Since then there have been twenty-seven other book sales and over 250 short stories and articles have appeared in a wide range of magazines. Paul’s favorite genre to write is Western novels and two of his novels – Bad Medicine and Deserter were Spur Award finalists.

GVPS ONLINE POLL: In preparation for the June 1st acceptance of girls into their membership, The Boy Scouts of America announced that it will drop the “boy” from its namesake program and become known as Scouts BSA. What is your opinion of the move to accept girls into the organization?

The Spur award is given by the Western Writers of America and honors distinguished writing about the American West. He stated, “I would still write to this day, whether I was being paid or not. It was tough at first – I was divorced and I did not have much money. I ate a lot of peanut butter sandwiches. But, I knew if I didn’t go for it, I never would.” Bagdon started a writing school which is still going strong. There are open meet-ups at Webster Library on Mondays from 6:30pm-9:00pm. The focus is writing for publication and some attendees have several of their own books published.

DID YOU KNOW? Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

IDEAS ON PAPER (NAPSI)—For over 40 years, works by famed sculptor Strong-Cuevas have been acclaimed and enjoyed in major museums and private collections. Now, you can have them at your fingertips. That’s because Abrams Books, the premier art book publisher, has created a lavishly illustrated coffee table sized book of 190 of her color and black-and-white drawings, “Strong-Cuevas Drawings: Ideas on Paper.” All the drawings have been thematically arranged and explore recurring themes of Strong-Cuevas’ art. Strong-Cuevas says her work expresses thoughts about universal consciousness, space and time, and inner mediation. Best known for her sculptures made from bronze, stainless steel and aluminum, StrongCuevas’ art often portrays the human head and plays with scale. Her drawings express the same themes. The book also features a foreword by noted art historian and critic Jan Garden Castro, who has written extensively about Georgia O’Keeffe, Louise Bourgeois, Maya Lin, and numerous others. Also published by Abrams is the critically acclaimed “Strong-Cuevas Sculpture: Premonitions in Retrospect,” featuring photos of her sculpture. Learn More: The book is available at Barnes & Noble and online at bn.com, Amazon.com and www.abramsbooks.com.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written many articles about high blood pressure, but I want to know about low blood pressure. What is normal? What is low, and what is dangerously low? I have a heart issue for which I take medication. I want to know if my blood pressure is too low. -- Anon. ANSWER: Among young adults, only 5 percent of men will have a blood pressure below 110/60 or so, and for young women, it’s 90/46. Blood pressure tends to go up with age, so low blood pressure numbers are higher for older adults. For people with healthy hearts, the only time we worry about low blood pressure is if there are symptoms, and the most common symptoms are lightheadedness and fainting. In people with congestive heart failure, low blood pressure usually is not concerning in itself, but because it might indicate that the heart is getting weaker. However, many of the medications used for CHF reduce blood pressure, which can even limit the amount of medication that can be used. In people with blockages in their arteries, too low a blood pressure can cause inadequate blood flow to parts of the heart and cause angina symptoms. The blood pressure is dangerously low when a disease process is causing the low blood pressure. In extreme cases, low blood pressure is one of the most dangerous signs of shock. But in general, for healthy people, low blood pressures are not worrisome. *** DR. ROACH WRITES: I have received more letters about hearing loss than I would have believed possible. Most of the advice was consistent, so let me review what both professionals and people who have been through the process of getting hearing aids have advised. First, have realistic expectations about what a hearing aid can do. It does not make your hearing what it was 50 years ago. Loud noises can be painfully overamplified. Second, find someone who really knows what he or she is doing. The people whose technicians spent a lot of time teaching, discussing the different options and adjusting them after purchase were the most satisfied. (The adjustment period can take weeks.) A referral from a satisfied friend could be a good place to start. Several professionals recommended that your audiologist be certified by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association. Third, be prepared to spend some money. Good hearing aids are expensive. More expensive doesn’t always mean better, but most of my readers felt that the money they spent on hearing aids was well worth it. I’m sure there are some great ones, and some not as great. Many veterans wrote me to tell me about their (mostly) good experiences at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Fourth, try many models. Some people prefer in-the-ear, some overthe-ear. Because it takes a long time to get used to them, you need to wear them pretty much constantly. Both your ears and your brain need time to adjust, so be patient. Finally, several people and one chapter president wrote to me about the Hearing Loss Association of America (www.hearingloss.org) and the benefit they gained from visiting their local chapter and sharing their experiences. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas. Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects.

HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE

What is Holistic Dentistry?

Stay hydrated. Hydrating during a workout helps replace the water and nutrients that are lost through sweat. Muscles that are not hydrated during a workout and throughout the rest of the day are susceptible to fatigue.

Total Health Dentistry… Because your mouth health impacts your entire body.

LOVING REMEMBRANCE When those we have loved have passed, we create a vision of them in our imaginations. Fortified as well as comforted by these images, we remember them and imagine their delight as we look into the eyes of their grandchildren and partake of the daily joys that they once found to be so pleasurable. Every time we light a candle, cook a favorite meal, visit a treasured destination, and meet with family, we have an opportunity to conjure up the image of a loved one who has passed and think of the many ways that he or she added to our appreciation of life. The dead provide the foundation upon which we live. A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. It is a time of sharing good memories and experiences with family and friends. It is a time when respect, concern, and appreciation for a life that has been lived can be expressed in a sincere manner. To learn more about our services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” Thomas Campbell

Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

May 24, 2012 We miss you more each day, and wish you were here. The days are long and the nights are longer without you, but we know you are in a better place. Some day we will all be together. Love you, Jean and all of your Children & Grandchildren

“One of the secrets of a happy life is to forgive everybody everything every night before you go to bed…” ~ from Ann Landers

It’s an imperfect world we all live in and no doubt we all experience situations that give us good cause to feel hurt sometimes very deeply hurt. Somehow we feel that if we “nurse our grudge” and vow never to forgive the one who hurts us, we are somehow getting even. Actually, such repressed hatreds hurt us much more than anyone else. Even if we fail to understand why someone has acted hatefully toward us, if we can forgive them and forget the incident, we have established control and we will be happier for doing so. We serve all faiths, creeds and fraternal orders with perfectly appropriate services. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of possibilities begin to open up by midweek. Some seem more appealing than others. But wait for more facts to emerge later on before you consider which to choose. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bravo to the determined Bovine. While others might give up, you continue to search for answers. Expect your Taurean tenacity to begin paying off by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might want to consider stepping back from the task at hand for a while. This could help you get a better perspective on what you’ve done and what still needs to be done. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your keen Cancerian insight should help you determine whether a new offer is solid or just more fluff ‘n’ stuff. The clues are all there waiting for you to find them. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Being ignored is difficult for any proud Leo or Leona. But pushing yourself back into the spotlight might be unwise. Instead, let things work themselves out at their own pace. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Trying to uncover a colleague’s secret under the pretext of showing concern is ill-advised. Control your curiosity to avoid raising resentment in the workplace. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Expect to hear good news about a loved one. Also, be prepared for some changes in several family relationships that could develop from this lucky turn of events. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some surprises are expected to accompany a number of changes that will continue through part of next week. At least one could involve a romantic situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be upset by some of your critics. But most of your associates continue to have faith in your ability to get the job done, and done well. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace goal that suddenly seems out of reach is no problem for the sure-footed Goat, who moves steadily forward despite any obstacles placed in his or her way. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Uncertainty about who is right and who isn’t might keep you from making a clear-cut decision. Wait until you know more about what you’re being asked to decide. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful to keep your emotions in check when dealing with a demanding personal situation. You need to set an example of strength for others to follow. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an extraordinary ability to rally people to do their best. You would be a treasure as a teacher. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc

whoever received it had just opened it and kept it. You have restored my faith in the goodness of people! Many thanks!

You saved Mother’s Day! Many thanks to the kind person who

received my Macy's package in error on 5/9, and delivered it to my home in Batavia. My address had been cut off, and I have no idea where the Post Office actually left it. It contained a Mother's Day present from my college-student daughter, who saved several paychecks to buy it for me. We were both feeling terrible after having been notified it had been delivered, but knowing we did not receive it. It must have taken you time and effort to track me down using only a partial name and street address. We were so relieved when my son called and said someone had dropped it off at our side door! I was really afraid it had been stolen, or that

Thank you to 3 out of 4 local nursery programs, who said yes to my 4 year old child to attend their daycare. Even though my child could only attend 2 out of the 3 days/week, they felt it was to my child's benefit to attend for the 2 days, and they would provide me with the day missed so I can teach what they missed. The 3 daycares said 2 days was better than not going at all to advance to kindergarten. A BIG thank you to having my child's well-being first.

Friday the 11th, around 7:30pm I fell down in the Wegmans store entry at the flower area! You came over to make sure I was okay! I was so embarrassed and aggravated with myself, that I didn’t thank you! Please accept my thanks and gratitude for your kindness!

Schlepping your puppy around in a baby sling makes it crystal clear that you are gaming the ADA by claiming your newborn dog is a service animal. It is a pet that you choose to carry around like an infant, taking it out in the checkout of a grocery store. No, the employees can't ask you anything, BUT I CAN! I called you out and I will do so each and every time I

witness people like you taking advantage of a law created to help the truly disabled live full lives. Licking your fingers while you shop for groceries doesn't count as a 'service'. My JD has Yale stamped on it. Your GED didn't help you argue your case very intelligently. How disappointed, unhelpful and morally lacking. On March 19th, late in the afternoon, I was pulling into a local store parking lot when I hit the curb. I parked in the handicap spot. A lady tapped on my window and said "Your wheelchair fell out of your container on the back of your car; it is over there in the parking lot." As she walked towards the store, she turned and also said "your door is open on the container." I wish I had responded to her limited willingness to help, but I missed my opportunity. It is hard to

retrieve a wheelchair from the ground when you only have one leg to stand on. Thanks for the help lady, and to those who drove by while I hopped for my wheels. To the wife who wrote on her husband's behalf regarding the naked neighbor. You put a smile on a lot of faces with that vent, made my husband and I laugh. Sounds like you can't do anything about it and you're probably encouraging her to walk around naked. Stop complaining for your husband. He could just stop looking. We live at the [local apartment complex]. It's hard for us to figure out how [big box store] would allow even a single piece of debris to blow around, let alone the hundreds and hundreds of pieces line the road and the fields. It's a disgrace to our friends that come visit us. It's bad enough

who [big box store] doesn't hire a young person to keep the parking lot free from roving grocery carts but to allow the blowing trash is unacceptable. To my neighbor two houses over who left their dog outside barking at 6:45am and 8am Saturday 04/14 morning: the next time I come home at 2:30am my hand will accidentally slip on the steering wheel horn due to lack of sleep. I can't believe I have seen a Lawn Service Truck on our [Lake] Road twice this Spring. I truly hope it is just for Lawn MOWING. With all the worries of too much Phosphorous in our Finger Lakes they shouldn't be spraying anywhere near the Lake or the watershed areas. Shame on any resident who calls for their spraying services around the water that we drink!

Many thanks sent to Ravens Food Center. You truly are a blessing to the whole community. Every Saturday your smiling faces and good nature feed so many families. Thanks for all you do!! On Monday, April 16th I went to Town & Country Restaurant in Batavia for a late breakfast. When I asked my waitress for the check she told me someone had picked up my check. I didn't know anyone in the restaurant but whoever you are THANK YOU; there are a lot of good people around. THANKS AGAIN. GOD BLESS

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.
