GVPENNYSAVER.COM MAKE HIS FIRST FATHER’S DAY SPECIAL Let Dad sleep in. Chances are Dad is enamored with his little bundle of joy, but it’s well-known that being a new father often means sacrificing sleep time - especially for the first several months to a year of that child’s life. Enlist the help of a family member who can be on baby watch while Dad gets to sleep in on the weekend of his big day. With some extra sleep, Dad can enjoy Father’s Day that much more.

Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives. The vivid colors and smells emanating from farmers’ markets indicate just how fresh and nutritious the offerings tend to be. Farmers who peddle their wares at farmers’ markets adhere to careful farming methods to ensure their foods are as nutritious as possible.

GVPS ONLINE POLL: Televangelist Jesse Duplantis, whose ministry already owns 3 jets, recently posted a video saying he had divine conversation in which Jesus asked for a $54 million private jet. Duplantis urged followers to help him fulfill the request, reassuring them that the goal wasn’t to raise money to fund the purchase, but to have followers join him in “believing” in God for it to happen. How do you feel about Duplantis’ campaign to raise the money needed to purchase the jet?

• There is no need for a luxurious jet, he needs to lead a more humble life! • People have the right to follow their beliefs even if it means supporting this plan. • It is not my place to judge, he answers to a higher power! Poll Ends: 06/12/18

Vote at: www.gvpennysaver.com Poll Results: 06/05/18 What is your opinion of the playing of the National Anthem at high school sporting events?

• It should be played at every game of every event. This instills respect for the flag in our youth. – 83.3% • It really doesn’t matter, no one pays attention! – 16.7% • Only play it at the beginning, this will speed things up! – 0%

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

Appointment companions are a smart move Visits to a physician are just one step people make in an effort to improve their well-being. While it’s important that everyone visit their physicians at least once a year for a checkup, seniors may need to see their physicians more frequently than other age groups. When visiting the doctor, it is easy for anyone to miss important components of what the doctor is saying, and it’s just as easy to misunderstand certain instructions or medication information. Seniors who bring companions along to appointments with their physicians can reduce the risk of misunderstanding advice or diagnoses given by their doctors. Data from U.S. News and World Report states that about one-third of seniors still living on their own take a companion with them to their routine doctor’s office visits. Companions are typically spouses, but they can include children or other family members as well. Patients may find there are many advantages to bringing someone along to an appointment. And companions may want to learn more about patients’ goals at each appointment prior to going along so they can prepare and know how to help during the appointment. Listen - People tend to forget at least half of what they hear in the doctor’s office, says the Archives of Internal Medicine. This tendency may be increased when patients are nervous about the potential outcome of their visits. Bringing a companion along means that both people are actively listening. Together, the information they’ve heard can combine to provide a full account of the visit. Taking notes - Companions can jot down important notes about the appointment, such as dates and times for follow-up visits, medication advice and any other instructions that may be forgotten once the patient leaves the office. Companions can later translate the jargon-heavy language of a physician

into an understandable language the patient can fully understand. Medical history - Sometimes a companion can be a useful resource, calling a doctor’s attention to a patient’s prior hospitalizations and illnesses. Companions can even call attention to any medications the patient is currently taking. Serving as an advocate - Very often a companion can operate as a patient advocate, clarifying questions or getting further information out of a doctor if the patient is hesitant to ask. If the information isn’t clear, the companion can raise red flags or ask to have the instructions put in a different light. Translation - Sometimes patients need companions who speak their native languages when their physicians do not. People are learning that bringing a family member or friend along to doctors’ appointments can be a smart way to make the most of doctor/patient interactions.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your creative side is enhanced by indulging yourself in as much artistic inspiration (music, art, dance, etc.) as you can fit into your schedule. Bring someone special along. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Take a little restorative time out of your busy life. Go somewhere quiet this weekend. Or just close the door, turn on the answering machine and pretend you’re away. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your advice might be much in demand by family and friends this week. But reserve time for yourself to investigate a project that could have some unexpected potential. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Workrelated issues demand your attention in the early part of the week. Family matters dominate Thursday and Friday. But the weekend is yours to spend as you please. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Try to keep your temper in check as you deal with someone who seems to enjoy showing disrespect. Losing your Leonine cool might be just what the goader hopes to see. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A heated confrontation needs some cool-off time before it boils over. Better to step away than to try to win an argument where emotions overrule the facts. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Someone very special in your life finally sends that reassuring message you’ve been hoping for. You can now devote more time to the tasks you had put aside. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Job pressures begin to ease by week’s end, leaving you time to relax and restore your energy levels before you face next week’s emerging challenges. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your spiritual strength helps calm a friend who might be facing an unsettling change in their life. An offer to help comes from a surprising source. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) By midweek you could learn some surprising facts about an associate that might cause you to reconsider a long-held view about someone in your past. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) One of those rare-for-you darker moods sets in in the early part of the week. But by Thursday, the clouds lift and you’re back doing nice things for people in need. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use that sharp Piscean perceptiveness to reel in more information about a promising offer so that you have the facts to back up whatever decision you make. BORN THIS WEEK: Although you prefer the status quo, you easily can adapt to change when it’s called for. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Dark circles may result from pigmentation changes that occur after exposure to the sun or some other type of UV light. Individuals who apply sunscreen on their faces, including around their eyes, may be able to reduce or prevent pigment changes.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been vegan for 15 years. I avoid sugar, limit salt and have no caffeine. Recently, a pharmacist told me that I will not get proper protein unless I add fish to my diet. However, long ago, my doctor told me that my vegan diet was good and that I should take vitamin B-12 daily, which I have been doing. What are your thoughts on adding fish? -- S.N. ANSWER: I agree with your doctor. A vegan diet can be very healthy, and avoiding sugar in particular helps assure that it is. The issue of adequate protein is brought up frequently, but most Americans consume more than twice the recommended daily allowance of protein. Plant foods have plenty of protein, and you certainly do not need to eat fish in order to get adequate protein. I think fish can be a healthy part of a diet, but it is not necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was admitted to the hospital several months ago with poor heart function and only 10 percent kidney function. He has been on dialysis three times a week since then. We have been inquiring for several months about his current kidney function, and we cannot get an answer. We are just curious as to whether there has been any improvement. -- S.K. ANSWER: Dialysis is a way of replacing kidney function when the kidneys can no longer remove enough of the body’s waste materials. It sounds like your husband is on hemodialysis, where the blood is run through a machine that removes excess fluid and waste products, such as creatinine and potassium, which would otherwise increase in concentration in the blood. High potassium is life-threatening, and creatinine, though not dangerous, is the molecule we look at most commonly to estimate kidney function. Very rarely, kidney function can return even after a prolonged time on dialysis. I have never seen a case, but one study showed two cases per thousand where dialysis could be stopped. The clue that kidney function was returning was that urine output, which normally is scant while on hemodialysis, had increased over time. Unfortunately, 99.8 percent of the time, the kidney failure is permanent. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old male, and I have been heavy for most of my life. Over the past 18 months, I have lost a great deal of weight and feel better than I have in years. My issue is where the excess has ended up: just below my belt-line. I know that so-called spot reducing doesn’t work, so I’m at a loss as to how to go about getting rid of this paunch. It’s not above my belt, and it is stubborn. Any ideas? -- T.C. ANSWER: If you keep losing weight, odds are that stubborn fat will gradually go away. High-intensity aerobic exercise did seem to help in one study. I have had patients undergo liposuction, but that helps your appearance, not your overall health.

A huge Thank You from Pittsford Mendon High School to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Pittsford Volunteer Fire Department, Pittsford Volunteer Ambulance, Keenan Funeral Home, Sutherland Auto, Life Net of New York and the Mendon student actors for participating in the DWI crash reenactment held on 5/4. It not only delivered a compelling message, it also helped heighten the awareness of making positive decisions by our students. Their participation played a key role in the smooth facilitation of the event and was very much appreciated. Thank you to many people who came to my assistance after a car accident. I had an accident in

Webster. I want to thank the police officers, fire department, paramedics, and staff at Yolickity, multiple bystanders and a special thank you to Kevin and Nancy. They removed many items from my car including 3 car seats. They installed a car seat in their car to take me and my granddaughter home. God bless you all.

Thank you to the Avon Chamber of Commerce for the honor of Citizen of the Year and to all who attended the gathering. We truly appreciate your presence. Special thanks to Cindy Zhe and Marcia Andres for their presentation. Mary Lou Marks & Susan Pusloskie

stamps to! Also maybe they should sell their land to receive money to live before any other aid....

I realize that most all of us pay a lot of taxes and it is a big problem in our life. This is what I don't know is how can a person or persons receive welfare or any kind of public aid and still own property like land?? When it’s time to pay property taxes who do you think pay their property taxes?? Maybe the state should take a closer look on who they give money or food

If you pay attention to the news, or newspapers more and more married females are using both their names to identify themselves, maiden name, then married name, you took your vows to marry this person and to carry your spouse’s last name, I think people know who you are, or is it an identity crisis? Hey, look at me. At income tax time do you file single, or jointly? There’s only room for 1 last name. Together as one. If you're over 65 be careful about doctors recommending surgery. Get a second opinion. My eye doctor pushed cataract surgery for 5 years and even threatened my driver's license if I

A heartfelt thank you to Ron Beach Jr. of J.B. Sportswear for giving a heart patient a well needed chuckle. A small local business with a huge heart and great community service. We will be forever grateful!

Each weekday morning I pass a school bus in Bloomfield and witness the driver staying pulled over after a pick up so the traffic behind the bus can clear out. Their consideration for the line of cars keeps the children safer when traffic is not so anxious and speeding around the slower moving bus. KUDOS!

didn't do it. I got a second opinion and NO SURGERY was recommended! Doctors aren't perfect and some are thinking more of their business than our medical care. I urge residents of [local town] to vote against the proposed Community Center on June 19th. We do not need a new library. The present one is quite new and expansive. We do not need a new Community Center and Recreation Department. Local High Schools and the local college have year round programs for families. There is a new YMCA. TAXES are high enough now!

Thank you to the Avon Garden Club for the beautiful flowers in the planters throughout the village and around the park. You all do a beautiful job. I especially love the flower cart. Thank you to the village crew for your help hanging the military banners and keeping our village looking so nice. The Memorial Day parade was great as usual. Thanks!

SOLEMN UNDERTAKING In order that the dead reach the land of eternity, the ancient Greeks believed that the deceased must make a journey across the river Styx. A coin was placed in the mouth of the deceased to pay for the passage, and a honey cake was placed next to the body to appease the dog Cerberus, who guarded the entrance to Hades. As for the ancient Romans, they would wash the deceased’s body with hot water and oil daily for seven days. A group of slaves, called pollinctores, performed this function. Funeral processions were held at night to avoid defilement of the living. The procession was managed by a Designator, who functioned in much the same capacity of modern funeral directors. No matter how prepared we are, a loved one’s death often leaves us feeling numb and bewildered. If you’re responsible for making the funeral arrangements or executing the will, shock and grief can be immobilizing. Even simple decisions can be overwhelming. We can help. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. “Amusement is the happiness of those who cannot think...” ~ Alexander Pope Although Pope was an English poet who lived during the early 1700s, his thought about amusement is extremely pertinent today, almost three centuries later. In fact, it may well be one of the eternal truths of all times. It is only natural that we like to be amused from time to time, particularly after hard work has earned us a little relief. However, there are too many people for whom being amused is a way of life. If these people would give themselves a chance to think, they might find a far greater satisfaction. We can provide a dignified and comforting funeral service at a price within the means of any family. The decision on price is always made by the family we serve.

Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.

WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
