A National Award is Earned by Dr. Sandro R. Popelka DDS, MPH, MAGD The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that Sandro R. Popelka, DDS, MPH, MAGD, of Canandaigua, NY, received the association’s Mastership Award during the AGD 2016 annual meeting, which took place July 14 to 17 in Boston, MA. The Mastership Award is the AGD’s highest honor and one of the most respected designations within the profession. To earn this award, Dr. Popelka completed 1,100 hours of dental continuing education. As a Mastership Award recipient, Dr. Popelka joins more than 2,300 active AGD Masters who have gone above and beyond the basic requirements to care for their patient’s oral health. “This award requires an extraordinary amount of time and effort,” says AGD Immediate Past President W. Mark Donald, DMD, MAGD. “Dr. Popelka should be commended for his unflagging commitment to continuing education, which allows him to provide the best possible dental care and oral health education to his patients.” Dr. Popelka graduated from University of Rochester in 2005 and currently practices dentistry in Canandaigua. He and his wife, Anna, have 3 children, Giannina, Adriano, and Marcello.

“Men hate those to whom they have to lie…”
~ Victor Hugo
Why does anyone ever lie? The confidence man and other unscrupulous people tell lies to dupe their victims. Others may lie because the truth could be an admission of guilt. Still others lie because they do not want to hurt someone else’s feelings. Where telling the truth could mean humiliation and punishment, it takes character to avoid resorting to a lie. We hate the ones to whom we have to lie because they’re in a position to force us to do something for which we hate ourselves. Our goal should be to live in such a way as to eliminate any situation where a lie is ever necessary. Thoughtful families select a funeral director as they do a doctor or attorney. We would welcome a “get-acquainted” visit by you, in our office or in your home. Call us to schedule an appointment.

SYMBOLIC MEANING Cemetery headstones have traditionally been decorated with both secular and religious emblems and symbols that imbue them with lasting meaning. One of the most popular of these is the symbol of an angel, which represents spirituality. These messengers from God are also thought to guard the tomb. Less widely observed and known is the broken column topped with carved flowers, symbolizing a life cut short. There is also the image of the dove, which is regarded by Judeo-Christian tradition as a symbol of resurrection, innocence, and peace. The symbol of a funeral urn, which is only slightly less popular than the cross, symbolizes immortality. Today, even portraits of the deceased can be etched or transposed onto a gravestone. Commemorative items can be as classic or as personalized and unique as you desire. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME is here to honor your requests, while keeping your personal taste and budget in mind. No detail is too large or too small for us to handle. To schedule an initial, confidential meeting, contact us today at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facilities, conveniently located at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “A human act once set in motion flows on forever to the great account. Our deathlessness is in what we do, not in what we are.” ~ George Meredith

Maria Battoglia Honored with Canandaigua Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship By The Canandaigua Classic Show Committee Maria Battoglia’s character, good grades and interest in pursuing a four-year college degree are the qualities that earned her a $1,000 scholarship to Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC). Battoglia is the 2016 recipient of a scholarship in memory of Denett Pimkowski, a woman who touched many lives through her chosen careers and volunteerism. It is funded by the Canandaigua Kiwanis Foundation with proceeds from the Canandaigua Classic Antique Show and Sale. “I love school,” admits Battoglia who was in National Honor Society in high school and made the Dean’s list her first semester in college. “My long-term career plans are to become a Certified Public Accountant, a Chief Financial Officer or a Financial Adviser.” Working as an accountant for a company she loves “would be perfect.” In addition to her academic accomplishments, Maria was a mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program while at Canandaigua Academy. In the Canandaigua school district, it is now called the Bigs and Littles program and designed to give youngsters a positive teen role model. Battoglia, a 2016 graduate, does not hesitate to recommend to others the benefit of being a mentor to a younger child. The 18th annual Canandaigua Classic Antique Show and Sale will be held on Sunday, February 12, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Finger Lakes Gaming and Race
Marianne Gallagher (past-president, Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua), Maria Battoglia, Carla DeMeco and Laurel Wemett attend the 32nd Annual Constellation Brands Honors Dinner at Finger Lakes Community College. Track. In addition to the Denett Pimkowski scholarship, proceeds fund other scholarships and grants to nonprofit organizations in support of the arts, culture and learning in Ontario County.
DID YOU KNOW? A 2016 study from researchers at the University of Eastern Finland found that it is possible to slow down and even temporarily stop the progression of global warming by increasing atmospheric aerosol concentration. The study found that, when injected into the stratosphere, aerosol particles were highly efficient in cooling down the climate. That injection can happen naturally when volcanoes erupt and send particles into the stratosphere, where the particles reflect solar radiation back into space, thus cooling down the climate. While this method of climate engineering appears promising, the study’s authors note that restricting greenhouse gas emissions must remain a priority. If greenhouse gas emissions continue to grow, a larger number of aerosol particles would need to be injected into the stratosphere, resulting in larger relative particle sizes that would not be as effective at cooling the climate.

Applications and a discounted admission coupon for the antique show can be downloaded from the show website www.canandaiguaantiquesclassic.org. School districts interested in starting a mentoring program like Canandaigua’s, should contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester at 585-442-2250.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Feb. 7, 1812, the most violent of a series of earthquakes near Missouri causes a so-called fluvial tsunami in the Mississippi River, actually making the river run backward for several hours. Large lakes, such as Reelfoot Lake and Big Lake, were created by the earthquake.

Precautionary measures older travelers must consider Climate & Geography It’s also important to consider geographical conditions before establishing any travel plans. Older men and w omen tend to have more health issues and might even be on prescriptions that can make it challenging to travel to certain areas. Before committing to a trip, consult your physician about the possible effects a certain climate might have on you personally. Some people might be sensitive to altitude and therefore unable to travel to high-altitude locations w ithout putting themselves at serious risk. W hen considering climate and geography, don’t overlook a region’s history or likelihood of natural disasters. If a given destination has a history of hurricanes, earthquakes or tsunamis, then consider that before making plans. It’s still possible to enjoy such destinations, but you’ll w ant to travel w hen such storms or natural disasters are not in season.

Historical scrapbooks can honor older relatives There are so many different and creative ways for families to showcase their heritage and honor a grandparent or other special senior. Scrapbooks are one such way to share the life of a special person and indirectly tell the tale of your family history. Very often personal history projects are a part of elementary school curricula, so you may already have the makings of a family tree or a family diary in your home. All it takes is a little more research and some planning to design a scrapbook that can be gifted or kept for generations to enjoy. Begin by making an outline of what you would like to cover in the scrapbook. Perhaps there is a specific event in a grandparent’s life that is worth highlighting, like a military tour of duty or a brief stint in show business. Maybe you would like to present different snapshots in time during his or her life. Either way, planning out the content of the scrapbook will make it easier to gather the necessary elements. Once you’ve settled on a theme, begin your research by interviewing the eventual recipient (he or she doesn’t have to know the reason behind the inquiry). During the interview, take note of key dates and try to establish the mood of the era with supporting materials. For example, you may be able to find samples of advertisements from a correlating period in history or newspaper clippings that can be used to fluff up the content of the book. In the meantime, gather photos that can be used in the scrapbook, which may take some hunting. Prints can be scanned and copied via a desktop scanner at home, or loaded onto a CD or thumb drive and brought to a pharmacy photo kiosk. Some specialty shops can even scan slides or convert stills from film into images. Make sure to make copies of all original prints and be

careful not to lose or damage the originals. Scrapbooks can be made manually with materials purchased anywhere from craft and hobby stores to stationery shops. There are a variety of paper-cutting tools, adhesives, stickers, labels, and stencils that can be used to enhance the look of the scrapbook. There also are computer software programs or online tools through photo-sharing sites that enable you to upload images and text and design photo books entirely online. Then the finished product can be printed out in a variety of finishes. This method may actually be preferable for those who plan to save the scrapbook or anticipate it being such a big hit that others will want their own copies. Create a digital file of all of your information and copies of images. This way if you ever want to add to the scrapbook or reproduce information in the future you will have all of the information at your fingertips. The scrapbook also will serve as a good source of material down the line should future generations want to learn about their ancestors. Scrapbooking is more than just detailing baby’s first birthday or a vacation. This popular pastime can help document the life of a special senior.

On Christmas Eve at the Aldi’s in Batavia I told the gentleman behind me with just a few groceries to go ahead of me at the checkout. I joked that I was being nice because Santa was watching. When I went to pay the cashier said “The fellow ahead of you left $20.00 toward your order.” I hope that fellow reads this so he knows I’m thankful. Could he have been Santa? BB of Byron

On Wednesday, December 28th I was at the BJ’s in Henrietta. After I packed my groceries in the trunk and put the cart away I realized that I had left my purse at the self-checkout. I ran back in, very panicked, and heard, “Ma’am are you looking for your purse??” from an employee. I was told that a man had seen it at the selfcheckout and turned it in. I had left it completely open with all of my most precious belongings – my camera, wallet, pictures of my grandchildren, my Bible, etc. I am so grateful to this man – thank you and God bless! I want to encourage parents to check into daycare centers not just before you make the decision to enroll your child(ren) but while they are attending daycare as well. If something seems not quite right, it most likely isn’t....listen to your children they may be trying to tell you something. You can research daycare centers for violations by visiting http://ocfs.ny.gov/ main/childcare. You can also find information on how to report a complaint. You may find your childcare provider is not meeting the standards required by the state. The daycare center is not required to notify parents when they receive violations. That is why it is important for parents to check up on the people who are caring for their children. What you find might make you consider looking elsewhere for childcare. There are two bills affecting recipients of Medicare and durable medical equipment (DME) currently on the floor of legislation: one is S.2312, known as the “DME Access and Stabilization Act of 2015,” and the H.R.4185, or “Protecting Access through Competitive-pricing Transition Act of 2015.” Variations of these bills include S.2736 and H.R.5210 “PADME Act of 2016.” These bills will cut costs for businesses of DME providers, while charging more to Medicare and its beneficiaries for their services. I encourage all Medicare and DME recipients to speak with your federal representatives to ensure these bills do not pass, and we continue using the Competitive Bidding Program to maximize business competition, while offering lower prices and better quality service. Let’s stop corrupt business.

DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written about screening for breast cancer, but are there any ways to prevent breast cancer in the first place? -- T.C. ANSWER: There are three behaviors that are well-accepted to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Breastfeeding is one, and it’s so good for the baby that we might forget that it has long-term advantages for moms, but add reducing the mother’s breast cancer risk to the list. The second is dietary phytoestrogens, compounds such as soy isoflavones and lignans, which are found in soybeans and other legumes. This data is most clear among Asian women. Finally, regular physical exercise reduces breast cancer risk, especially for women after menopause. Other dietary factors, such as a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in meat and saturated fat, may reduce risk of breast cancer, but this isn’t proven. Studies are ongoing to examine whether vitamin D or omega 3 fatty acids may reduce risk, as suggested in previous studies. For high-risk women, consider chemoprophylaxis with a SERM or aromatase inhibitor, and also a more-intensive screening program. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I went to my ENT doctor in January complaining of muffled hearing and a loud, high-pitched noise in my left ear. He gave me a hearing test, and it showed 50 percent loss. I had an MRI and was told that I have an acoustic neuroma on my left side. This has caused me to go 50 percent deaf in my ear. The ENT doctor wants me to wait six months and see if it grows more, which I don’t want to do because I feel it should be taken out while it is small. The choices I have are to watch and wait; to have traditional surgery; or to have surgery with gamma knife or cyber knife. I would really like to just get this done and have it taken out before it causes more problems, like affecting my facial nerve, balance nerve or if it gets too close to my brain stem. I also am worried that I may go completely deaf. I am getting a second opinion next month from a neurosurgeon. What are your thoughts on all of this? -- B.D. ANSWER: An acoustic neuroma, also called a vestibular schwannoma, is a type of non-cancerous tumor on the eighth cranial nerve, which is responsible for hearing and balance. These tumors usually are treated, although some authorities recommend a watch-and-wait approach if they aren’t bothering the patient, if the patient is a poor candidate for surgery or if the patient is otherwise reluctant. None of these seems to apply to you, so I would recommend proceeding with the second opinion, the neurosurgeon, whom I think is likely to recommend treatment. Progressive hearing loss is a clear indication that treatment likely would be beneficial sooner rather than later. All the treatments you mentioned are reasonable. Cyber knife and gamma knife are ways of delivering radiation to the tumor. Since any of these can achieve the goal of preventing the tumor’s growth and any worsening of symptoms, the choice should be left to the expert. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Walk, run or ride to the gym. Many people get the bulk, if not the entirety, of their exercise at a gym. For those who live outside of major cities, that likely involves driving to and from a gym before and after workouts. Instead of driving, consider walking, running or riding to the gym. Each option provides great cardiovascular exercise that can reduce or replace the time people spend on treadmills or elliptical machines. And cutting back on driving reduces fuel consumption and auto emissions, greatly benefitting the planet.

AVOID FLU, STICK TO W INTER-W ELLNESS ROUTINE
Try low-fat or fat-free dairy. Substitute low-fat alternatives for full-fat dairy items. For example, Greek yogurt can sometimes be used in place of less healthy ingredients such as mayonnaise.
Keep vitamins, minerals and supplements on hand. In addition to vitamin C, zinc, echinacea and fish oil are all proven to strengthen immunity. If natural herbs and roots aren’t cutting it, use reliable flu medicine.

Take thy plastic spade, It is thy pencil; take thy seeds, thy plants, They are thy colours. ~William Mason, The English Garden, 1782
W ITH HELP FROM CHILE, BLUEBERRIES STAY FRESH ALL W INTER They’re delicious, nutritious and versatile. They’re naturally fatfree, high in vitamin C and a rich source of antioxidants. Americans love them in c ereals, salads, sauces and as toppings and by the handful, but w hen w inter comes around, many people assume fresh blueberry season is over. Not so fast. W hen the snow flies in M inneapolis, things are just heating up in places like Chile. Thanks to a robust South American fruit industry, fresh blueberries now maintain their favored position in North American produce aisles, culinary creations, and home kitchens all year long. The popularity of blueberries has soared in recent years, driven by their impressive nutritional resume. One half-c up of blueberries c ontains just 42 c alories and helps meet the recommended 5 to 9 servings a day of c olorful fruits and vegetables. The “ Little Blue Dynamos” pac k in fiber, potassium, Vitamin C and more cancer-fighting antioxidants than either w ine or green tea. Recent studies also show that fresh blueberries can help keep skin looking younger; help prevent dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and heart disease; and serve as a natural anti-inflammatory. Helping the cause significantly is that most people consider fresh blueberries a treat, including children w ho remain blissfully unaw are of the health benefits. Fresh blueberries are easily enjoyed as a grab-and-go snack, but there are other sw eet and savory w ays to beat the w inter blues w ith this superfood.

DID YOU KNOW ? Exercise is a great w ay to maintain a healthy mind and body. M any people begin a new year by making resolutions to lose w eight or build musc le. Too often, how ever, men and w omen get stuck in an exercise rut, follow ing the same exercise routine w eek after w eek. Not only can this be boring, fitness experts advise that it’s nec essary to c hange an exercise routine periodically to continue to see results. It’s one reason w hy many fitness clubs unveil new classes every few w eeks. Just w hen you master the choreography of a class, it’s time to change! W ith repetition, the body adapts and grow s accustomed to the routine, using less energy as a result. That can affect your ability to lose w eight. Changing your w orkout forces your body to w ork harder, producing better results. If you exercise w ith a trainer, discuss w ays to modify your normal routine to surprise your body. Inc reased intensity, interval training, adding sprints to running, taking different classes, or even increasing the frequency of your w orkouts may do the trick.

When taking a client to breakfast or lunch, the invitation can be extended with less than a week’s notice, but no less than a few days in advance.
