Advice from the Pros: Do Not Neglect Auto Service The average age of a personal vehicle on the road today is more than 11 years, according to recent news reports. In tough economic times, it’s natural to rein in spending. But the experts at the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) warn that putting off routine auto maintenance or ignoring service intervals is false economy. Small issues can morph into more expensive repairs. For example, failure to replace worn brake pads or a faulty oxygen sensor -- both relatively easy services for qualified auto technicians -can result in expensive brake rotor service or costly replacement of the vehicle’s catalytic converter. Frequently neglected items include oil changes, tire and brake service, wheel alignment, air and fuel filters, and transmission service, according to ASE-certified auto technicians. Besides, a well-maintained vehicle gets better gasoline mileage, pollutes less, is safer to operate, and lasts longer than one that’s neglected, notes ASE.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Feb. 10, 1966, Ralph Nader, author of the groundbreaking book “Unsafe at Any Speed,” first testifies before Congress about unsafe practices in the auto industry. Nader would go on to advocate for other consumer causes, including food and drug safety.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

POSSIBLE WARNING SIGNAL As we learn more about the potential health dangers that gum disease may pose, new research provides yet another reason to have the dentist check for periodontal disease. While previous research has uncovered an association between gum disease and pancreatic cancer, a new study has found the people with high levels of a specific oral bacterium are more likely to get this form of cancer, which strikes 50,000 people annually. Researchers found that individuals with high levels of Porphyromonas gingivalis had a 59 percent greater chance of developing pancreatic cancer. While these findings do not establish a direct association, they are the first to reveal that significant oral bacteria levels can precede pancreatic cancer rather than developing later.

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we do our best to ensure our patients can get the gum disease care they need in one convenient location. We provide a variety of gum disease treatments for your convenience. If gum disease gets too severe it may need to be treated through surgery or extraction. This is why it’s important to get it treated at the first sign of a problem. To schedule a consultation, please call (585) 343-4246 or visit us at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Because inflammation is related to cancer, Porphyromonas gingivalis could cause inflammation in the pancreas, or the oral bacterium may simply be a marker for cancer-causing inflammation.

DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written about screening for breast cancer, but are there any ways to prevent breast cancer in the first place? -- T.C. ANSWER: There are three behaviors that are well-accepted to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Breastfeeding is one, and it’s so good for the baby that we might forget that it has long-term advantages for moms, but add reducing the mother’s breast cancer risk to the list. The second is dietary phytoestrogens, compounds such as soy isoflavones and lignans, which are found in soybeans and other legumes. This data is most clear among Asian women. Finally, regular physical exercise reduces breast cancer risk, especially for women after menopause. Other dietary factors, such as a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in meat and saturated fat, may reduce risk of breast cancer, but this isn’t proven. Studies are ongoing to examine whether vitamin D or omega 3 fatty acids may reduce risk, as suggested in previous studies. For high-risk women, consider chemoprophylaxis with a SERM or aromatase inhibitor, and also a more-intensive screening program. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I went to my ENT doctor in January complaining of muffled hearing and a loud, high-pitched noise in my left ear. He gave me a hearing test, and it showed 50 percent loss. I had an MRI and was told that I have an acoustic neuroma on my left side. This has caused me to go 50 percent deaf in my ear. The ENT doctor wants me to wait six months and see if it grows more, which I don’t want to do because I feel it should be taken out while it is small. The choices I have are to watch and wait; to have traditional surgery; or to have surgery with gamma knife or cyber knife. I would really like to just get this done and have it taken out before it causes more problems, like affecting my facial nerve, balance nerve or if it gets too close to my brain stem. I also am worried that I may go completely deaf. I am getting a second opinion next month from a neurosurgeon. What are your thoughts on all of this? -- B.D. ANSWER: An acoustic neuroma, also called a vestibular schwannoma, is a type of non-cancerous tumor on the eighth cranial nerve, which is responsible for hearing and balance. These tumors usually are treated, although some authorities recommend a watch-and-wait approach if they aren’t bothering the patient, if the patient is a poor candidate for surgery or if the patient is otherwise reluctant. None of these seems to apply to you, so I would recommend proceeding with the second opinion, the neurosurgeon, whom I think is likely to recommend treatment. Progressive hearing loss is a clear indication that treatment likely would be beneficial sooner rather than later. All the treatments you mentioned are reasonable. Cyber knife and gamma knife are ways of delivering radiation to the tumor. Since any of these can achieve the goal of preventing the tumor’s growth and any worsening of symptoms, the choice should be left to the expert. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Historical scrapbooks can honor older relatives There are so many different and creative ways for families to showcase their heritage and honor a grandparent or other special senior. Scrapbooks are one such way to share the life of a special person and indirectly tell the tale of your family history. Very often personal history projects are a part of elementary school curricula, so you may already have the makings of a family tree or a family diary in your home. All it takes is a little more research and some planning to design a scrapbook that can be gifted or kept for generations to enjoy. Begin by making an outline of what you would like to cover in the scrapbook. Perhaps there is a specific event in a grandparent’s life that is worth highlighting, like a military tour of duty or a brief stint in show business. Maybe you would like to present different snapshots in time during his or her life. Either way, planning out the content of the scrapbook will make it easier to gather the necessary elements. Once you’ve settled on a theme, begin your research by interviewing the eventual recipient (he or she doesn’t have to know the reason behind the inquiry). During the interview, take note of key dates and try to establish the mood of the era with supporting materials. For example, you may be able to find samples of advertisements from a correlating period in history or newspaper clippings that can be used to fluff up the content of the book. In the meantime, gather photos that can be used in the scrapbook, which may take some hunting. Prints can be scanned and copied via a desktop scanner at home, or loaded onto a CD or thumb drive and brought to a pharmacy photo kiosk. Some specialty shops can even scan slides or convert stills from film into images. Make sure to make copies of all original prints and be

careful not to lose or damage the originals. Scrapbooks can be made manually with materials purchased anywhere from craft and hobby stores to stationery shops. There are a variety of paper-cutting tools, adhesives, stickers, labels, and stencils that can be used to enhance the look of the scrapbook. There also are computer software programs or online tools through photo-sharing sites that enable you to upload images and text and design photo books entirely online. Then the finished product can be printed out in a variety of finishes. This method may actually be preferable for those who plan to save the scrapbook or anticipate it being such a big hit that others will want their own copies. Create a digital file of all of your information and copies of images. This way if you ever want to add to the scrapbook or reproduce information in the future you will have all of the information at your fingertips. The scrapbook also will serve as a good source of material down the line should future generations want to learn about their ancestors. Scrapbooking is more than just detailing baby’s first birthday or a vacation. This popular pastime can help document the life of a special senior.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Feb. 7, 1812, the most violent of a series of earthquakes near Missouri causes a so-called fluvial tsunami in the Mississippi River, actually making the river run backward for several hours. Large lakes, such as Reelfoot Lake and Big Lake, were created by the earthquake. To keep the heart unwrinkled, to be hopeful, kindly, cheerful, reverent - that is to triumph over old age. ~ Thomas Bailey Aldrich

DID YOU KNOW? Though the importing and use of asbestos has decreased dramatically since the mid-1970s, asbestos is still used in some products. According to the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration, more than a million American employees, many of whom work in the construction industry, face significant exposure to asbestos on the job. A group of minerals that occur naturally as bundles of fibers, asbestos has been linked to cancer, a connection that was ultimately discovered after evidence in the first half of the 20th century increasingly showed that breathing in asbestos caused scarring of the lungs. The most common way people are exposed to asbestos is through asbestos inhalation. Inhalation of asbestos occurs during the mining and production of asbestos and when people are involved in the making of products that contain asbestos. While such products are banned in many countries, including throughout the European Union, some countries have yet to ban the use of asbestos. Asbestos also can be inhaled when people are exposed to insulation that contains asbestos, which is generally found in older homes.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Keep track of your progress. Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. That spreadsheet might be more motivational than simply seeing a loan or credit card balance gradually reduce on your monthly statement. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success.

By The Canandaigua Classic Show Committee Maria Battoglia’s character, good grades and interest in pursuing a four-year college degree are the qualities that earned her a $1,000 scholarship to Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC). Battoglia is the 2016 recipient of a scholarship in memory of Denett Pimkowski, a woman who touched many lives through her chosen careers and volunteerism. It is funded by the Canandaigua Kiwanis Foundation with proceeds from the Canandaigua Classic Antique Show and Sale. “I love school,” admits Battoglia who was in National Honor Society in high school and made the Dean’s list her first semester in college. “My long-term career plans are to become a Certified Public Accountant, a Chief Financial Officer or a Financial Adviser.” Working as an accountant for a company she loves “would be perfect.” In addition to her academic accomplishments, Maria was a mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program while at Canandaigua Academy. In the Canandaigua school district, it is now called the Bigs and Littles program and designed to give youngsters a positive teen role model. Battoglia, a 2016 graduate, does not hesitate to recommend to others the benefit of being a mentor to a younger child. The 18th annual Canandaigua Classic Antique Show and Sale will be held on Sunday, February 12, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Finger Lakes Gaming and Race

“Men hate those to whom they have to lie…”

~ Victor Hugo

A few local ladies out to enjoy Batavia’s Bridal Show at Terry Hills.

Why does anyone ever lie? The confidence man and other unscrupulous people tell lies to dupe their victims. Others may lie because the truth could be an admission of guilt. Still others lie because they do not want to hurt someone else’s feelings. Where telling the truth could mean humiliation and punishment, it takes character to avoid resorting to a lie. We hate the ones to whom we have to lie because they’re in a position to force us to do something for which we hate ourselves. Our goal should be to live in such a way as to eliminate any situation where a lie is ever necessary. Thoughtful families select a funeral director as they do a doctor or attorney. We would welcome a “get-acquainted” visit by you, in our office or in your home. Call us to schedule an appointment.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

On Christmas Eve at the Aldi’s in Batavia I told the gentleman behind me with just a few groceries to go ahead of me at the checkout. I joked that I was being nice because Santa was watching. When I went to pay the cashier said “The fellow ahead of you left $20.00 toward your order.” I hope that fellow reads this so he knows I’m thankful. Could he have been Santa? BB of Byron

12-23-16, an accidental fire destroyed our garage, truck, countless possessions, injured my husband & our friend. To everyone who helped, offered help, texted, called, thank you. On Wednesday, December 28th I was at the BJ’s in Henrietta. After I packed my groceries in the trunk and put the cart away I realized that I had left my purse at the self-checkout. I ran back in, very panicked, and heard, “Ma’am are you looking for your purse??” from an employee. I was told that a man had seen it at the selfcheckout and turned it in. I had left it completely open with all of my most precious belongings – my camera, wallet, pictures of my grandchildren, my Bible, etc. I am so grateful to this man – thank you and God bless! I want to encourage parents to check into daycare centers not just before you make the decision to enroll your child(ren) but while they are attending daycare as well. If something seems not quite right, it most likely isn’t....listen to your children they may be trying to tell you something. You can research daycare centers for violations by visiting http://ocfs.ny.gov/ main/childcare. You can also find information on how to report a complaint. You may find your childcare provider is not meeting the standards required by the state. The daycare center is not required to notify parents when they receive violations. That is why it is important for parents to check up on the people who are caring for their children. What you find might make you consider looking elsewhere for childcare.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2017

To the old man who on November 17th at a local optical center refused to get on an elevator with my mother, a friend and myself because of a “weight issue.” I have forgiven you for your small-minded remark because I looked at the source. May God forgive your hatefulness because you will be standing in his judgment long before I will! P.S. I am not fat, I am fluffy. As a retail store employee please remember a few things the next time you are in line. We’re supposed to make sure you leave the store happy & for the most part “say yes.” So…yes it’s rude when you’re on your cell as we help you. Yes, you are taking your miserable life out on the wrong person, it’s not my fault that you’re miserable. Yes, we know you switched the tags/stickers for an even lower price. Yes, we think you’re nuts asking for a discount on an item because that’s the price you think it should be; It’s a business, not a garage sale. Yes, I am embarrassed for you when you’re yelling at a cashier, calm down because you’re making a fool of yourself. Smile.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Avoid caffeine in the late afternoon. Some professionals rely on caffeinated beverages such as coffee or energy drinks to combat afternoon drowsiness. While that afternoon caffeine fix might provide an immediate, if temporary, jolt of energy, it might also affect a person’s energy levels the following day. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that caffeine consumed as early as six hours before bedtime can significantly disrupt sleep. Professionals who reach for a cup of coffee in the late afternoon might get a sudden boost of energy, but their energy levels the following day might be lower due to a poor night’s sleep.
