A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire. ~Hugh Macmillan

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS Why replace bulbs two at a time? In an effort to promote the importance of changing headlight bulbs two at a time, Philips developed the “Change In Pairs” safety campaign, which aims to educate motorists about the dangers of dimming lights while promoting the many reasons that changing bulbs in pairs makes the road safer for all travelers. To support this safety initiative, Philips also packages its Upgrade Headlight Bulbs in pairs. Though replacing two headlight bulbs when only one is dimming may seem unwarranted, maintaining a consistent light output in both headlights makes the road safer for drivers, their passengers and oncoming motorists. When only one bulb is replaced, the resulting light output can be both unbalanced and unpredictable, providing inadequate lighting that can compromise driver visibility. In addition, oncoming motorists may experience difficulty seeing vehicles with just one headlight operating at full capacity, and some may even mistake oncoming cars and trucks for motorcycles, creating positioning issues for drivers on both sides of the yellow line.

Around and around the house the leaves fall thick—but never fast, for they come circling down with a dead lightness that is sombre and slow. Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

Autumn marks the time to transition from the hot days of summer to the chilly w eather of w inter. As people remove sw eaters and long pants from storage, cleaning up their yards also may be on their minds. Fall is a season of beautiful foliage, but once that magical color show is over, thousands of leaves have fallen to the ground, necessitating a few w eekends’ w orth of yard w ork. Some homeow ners may be on the lookout for environmentally friendly w ays to handle autumn yard w ork, and thankfully there are plenty of eco-friendly w ays to tackle such tasks.

DID YOU KNOW? Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep your feelings to yourself as you work through an awkward circumstance. Complaining is useless, and also unwise since your words could come back to haunt you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A sudden flash of Bovine practicality shows you how you might be able to turn your artistic pursuits into a profitable venture. A spouse or partner offers some sage advice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be prepared with several “Plan Bs” that you might have to use as backups just in case you encounter some troublesome complications with your carefully constructed schedule. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might think you’ll never have a free moment again with the demands of the workplace piling on. Cheer up. The pressure eases as holiday time nears. An old friend brings good news. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine pride might make it difficult to offer an apology to a co-worker you unintentionally offended. But a quick and sincere “I’m sorry” could prevent problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to tackle those backed-up chores that have kept you from moving into other, potentially more worthwhile projects. A personal matter needs your attention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually have no problem rushing to the defense of someone you perceive as being treated unjustly. But perceptions could be deceiving this week. Check the facts before you act. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before you point fingers at who might be to blame for the unexpected change in your plans, take a few moments to reflect on how this turn of events might be a blessing in disguise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You seek out advice in the first part of the week. But be careful not to let counsel from others overshadow your own sense of perception. Things become clearer by the week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The trusted colleagues you relied on earlier continue to offer support with your project. But you take more control, and by the week’s end, you should be in full command. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Rely on your practical side while exploring investment possibilities. Caution is still your watchword in these matters. Your social life takes a gratifying turn by the week’s end. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An already confusing situation appears to grow murkier during the first part of the week. But it all starts to clear by the week’s end. Plan to spend the weekend with someone special. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a passion for life that inspires others to follow your example. You could be a motivational speaker. “Abstinence is as easy for me as temperance would be difficult…” ~ Samuel Johnson There is a great deal of wisdom in Dr. Johnson’s epigram. For those who might not be familiar with any words he used, Dr. Johnson is remembered chiefly as a lexicographer, and developed one of the first authoritative dictionaries. Johnson tells us that if we want to eliminate a bad habit, it is easier to abstain entirely than try to practice moderation. Once we have conditioned ourselves to make the effort, we’ll find it as easy to abstain as to “cut down”…a practice which only serves to keep our bad habit alive. We serve families of all faiths and creeds with dignity and good taste. We are locally owned and operated and take a sincere interest in all who come to us for our professional aid.

What is Plaid Friday? An alternative to Black Friday, it focuses on small business. On Plaid Friday, merchants in the community offer discounts exclusively to people wearing plaid. How did Plaid Friday start? It began in Oakland CA in 2009 with gallery owner Kerri Johnson. Tired of the focus being on big box stores, she thought it was time for local businesses to “weave together” (hence the plaid) and create their own event. This idea has since spread across the nation.

A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling. • A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

Your 10 early signs of Alzheimer’s disease Change plays a big role in the aging process. As adults age, both their minds and bodies undergo changes. The changes associated with aging are not uniform. Some people may experience small changes as they inch toward and ultimately pass retirement age, while others may undergo changes that affect nearly every aspect of their lives. Cognitive decline is the type of age-related change that can have a dramatic impact on a person’s life, affecting his or her ability to live independently. A general term used to describe symptoms associated with a decline in memory or thinking skills such as judgment and reasoning, dementia is often mistaken as a normal part of aging. However, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America notes that dementia-related illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease, are not a normal part of aging. Because many people associate memory loss with aging, they may be compelled to accept some of the early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s as mere byproducts of growing older. However, the Alzheimer’s Association urges men 5. HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Read more. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function.

I recently found ripped up pieces of paper on one of my town's back roads. I was surprised to find they were seemingly diary pages! And they were dated just a couple of weeks ago. Let's just say they made me cry. It was a poetic love letter expressing one’s feelings for someone else. It was beautifully composed, with so much heartache in it. I am hoping the writer will see this. If you do, please contact me at wheniamold260@gmail.com. I want to know your story. Thank you for letting me realize there are many triumphs, heartaches and breaks. But
there is also hope. Hope and redemption. I recently submitted a request to Give & Take for a small fridge for our church’s Youth Ministry room. Within a week I had received two offers! I am blessed by the generosity of these two individuals but also by the Penny Saver’s commitment to publishing this wonderful and helpful feature! Hats off to Livingston County Pizza on Rochester Street in Avon. Your pizza is wonderful. Your service is excellent. Keep up the good work! Diane
people "that's just what toddlers do". No, it's what terrible parents of toddlers do. People were removing their hearing aids because of you. People were leaving the store because of you. If you're not going to teach your child to behave properly, leave him at home. Why do so many people feel it is OK to pull into oncoming traffic just because something is blocking their lane? I'm sorry that the delivery truck or lawn service is parked on your side, but that means you need to STOP and wait for me to pass before you proceed to drive around. You allowed your toddler to scream for 40 minutes in the area's largest grocery store this morning. You should be ashamed of yourself for telling
To the individual complaining about farmers spreading manure, New York State has right-to-farm laws. If you do not like the smells associated with agriculture, you should move to the city. Also, the world does not revolve around you and your schedule; farmers are not going to wait until it is 90 degrees to do a task that needs to get done. You come here from [another country] because you can receive a free wheelchair for

A few days ago I was in Walmart in Batavia, not having any success finding what I needed. Went to Customer
Service; the lady said this young man may be able to help you. (wish I could remember his name). He had a hand-held gadget and said, "Follow me." Eureka! Found all the items I was looking for! What a contrast to the woman who was checking me out in a store that is closing soon no eye contact; she was carrying on a conversation with a coworker.
your child; something that would have cost many thousands of dollars in [your country]. You live in a 3-bedroom subsidized housing apartment with a utility allowance deducted from the rent. Ramps were added to your building for easy wheelchair access. However, out front of your apartment you fly [your country's] flag. Pretty ungrateful aren't you?
mulch for the past two years, never plant a flower; never wash the exterior windows, paid to have a flunky company wash the exterior of the building (but not the windows!) which left stains ALL over the siding....a mess which no one has ever addressed. One picnic table for 32 residents, no shaded area for senior citizens to sit; no chairs, No nothing! Wake up.
With 60 new apartments going up next door that offer free air conditioning, free laundry facilities, free flat screen TV, free basic cable, free microwave ovens, and all utilities free, I would be sprucing up this complex before you lose all of your good tenants. Instead, you raise the price of one load of laundry to $4.00; never mulch these grounds even though the maintenance man has prepared all trees and shrubs for
To the driver in the car who nearly rear-ended me, then proceeded to "shoot" me "finger guns," tailgate me, then gunned it and flipped me off once I turned to [local store], yeah, I was the young girl in the other car. Sad to see grown men act like children. Actually, a child would have more decency. Sorry you were in such a rush. I actually commend you for at least not beeping at me!
While shopping at Aldi's a couple of weeks ago a very generous lady behind me paid for my groceries. Thanks again!

by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy HYBRID DENTURES While removable partial and full dentures work well to replace groups of teeth or a few teeth scattered across the lower or upper jaw, they have traditionally relied on adhesives to hold them in place. These products work by dramatically enhancing the coherence between the denture and gum tissue created by saliva alone. However, while denture adhesives help prevent slippage, they cannot compete with”dental implants” which anchor replacement teeth firmly in the jawbone. There also is an option for denture wearers in the form of “overdentures,” which combine traditional denture technology with modern advancements in dental implants. This “hybrid” option utilizes dental implants to anchor dentures securely in place to provide stronger biting ability that inspires confidence.
If one or more of your teeth have been lost to damage or decay, prompt attention with hybrid dentures, removable full and partial dentures, implants, or other methods of repair will prevent additional, perhaps bigger and more painful problems later on. Visit your dentist on a regular basis, and practice good home oral hygiene. It will pay off in the long run. If you don’t have a family dentist at this time, we invite you to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 6 Batavia City Centre. We have convenient office hours by appointment. Call 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances. P.S. As is the case with implants, overdentures work to prevent bone shrinkage, which often compromises the fit of ordinary dentures.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Antibiotics vs. Probiotics --DEAR DR. ROACH: I understand that the overuse of antibiotics can harm the good bacteria in the intestinal tract, as well as the bad. While I don’t feel that I am abusing antibiotics, I have been prescribed two courses in the past five years. I wonder what action can be taken to try to ensure that balance in my gut is restored. -- M.L. ANSWER: We are just beginning to understand the beneficial effect of bacteria living in our intestine, and there is preliminary evidence that antibiotics might have adverse long-term effects due to loss of healthy bacteria. I think the most important message from this is to use antibiotics as little as possible, but two courses in five years is certainly modest. The use of probiotics (healthy bacteria) might help prevent growth of harmful bacteria, improve the immune system, reduce pain and improve the function of the gut lining. I don’t think probiotics are necessary after the occasional course of antibiotics. However, it is reasonable to consider probiotics in some situations, including in people with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), in cases of infectious diarrhea and perhaps in people with irritable bowel syndrome. Commercial probiotics are expensive, not FDA-approved and aren’t proven to treat or cure any disease as of yet. Yogurt often is recommended, but not all yogurt contains live healthy bacteria. Even in the ones that do, many of the bacteria are killed by our stomach acid. Other fermented dairy products, such as kefir, have higher concentrations of bacteria. Both of these might be problematic in people with lactose intolerance (which can happen to anyone temporarily after a bout of infectious diarrhea) *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My domestic partner’s body heat is always very warm. We keep our home at 75 degrees F, and she complains that the house is too hot. Even at night when I touch her, I can feel the heat on her body. What do you think might be causing this to happen? Is this normal? She is in her mid-60s. -- C.B. ANSWER: It is not at all abnormal for people to have different temperatures at which they feel comfortable, and 75 degrees F is on the warm side of comfort for many. One way that our bodies regulate temperature is through blood flow to the extremities. When the blood vessels are open, the person will feel quite warm to the touch, and when trying to conserve heat, the skin feels cold and clammy. If she is really bothered by it, it might be worth thinking about two common medical issues: hyperthyroidism and vasomotor instability of menopause. In hyperthyroidism, the entire metabolism is enhanced, so the person is warm all the time. A simple blood test can confirm this diagnosis. In a woman in her 60s, it is common to have periods of vasomotor instability, usually called hot flashes. In these, the blood vessels open up and the woman becomes uncomfortably hot for a few minutes. It is possible that one of these could be happening for your partner. However, sometimes variations in normal physiology can fool the physician into thinking there is a problem. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. Zonta Holiday Festival: Batavia’s Annual Artisan & Vendor Marketplace By the Zonta Club of Batavia/Genesee & The Z-Club Members of the Zonta Club of BataviaGenesee County are preparing for their 6th Annual Holiday Festival on the weekend of November 10 & 11, 2018, at Batavia Downs Gaming, 8315 Park Road in Batavia. The event is open to the public- 10am-4pm both days FREE ADMISSION. The Holiday Festival brings in a diverse group of fantastic vendors and artisans from western New York and beyond to display/sell their products. The facility uses both floors to accommodate the 130 plus vendors and artisans. Besides the products available for purchase, there will be photo opportunities with Santa [Saturday (11-1) and Sunday (11-2)] and several princesses in costume, as well as a face painting booth and a caricature artist. Food can be purchased during the event at the Homestretch Grill. The Zonta Club of Batavia-Genesee County will use funds raised by the event to cover their local and international service projects- such as scholarships for high school girls, holiday bags for the YWCA domestic violence victims and women in the military, and items to create Birthing Kits that are sent to clinics in developing countries where births generally take place at homes instead of hospitals. Funds are also sent on the International Service Projects during the 2018-2020 Biennium, two projects are being approved by the International Service Fund. Let Us Learn Madagascar: An Integrated Program for Adolescent Girls and Eid bi Eid (Hand in Hand): Support to the resilience and empowerment of Syrian refugee and vulnerable Jordanian women. The club members will have assistance during the event by students in the Z-Club at Batavia High School. The students are a very active group and are known for collecting food for the Salvation Army Food Bank, assisting at school events, and raising funds for Zonta International Service projects. In April, the students held a 5K Walk/Run to raise funds for the Let Us Learn Madagascar project. The Zonta Club at Batavia-Genesee County recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of receiving their Charter in the Zonta International Organization. Founded in Buffalo, NY, in November of 1919, Zonta International is a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. It envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognized as human rights and every woman is able to
achieve her full potential. In such a world, women have access to all resources and are represented in decision-making positions on an equal basis with men. In such a world, no woman lives in fear of violence. After the Zonta Holiday Festival the members will turn their focus to the 16 Days of Activism campaign. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an International campaign to challenge violence against women and girls. The campaign runs every year from November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day. Members will also develop ways to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the founding of Zonta in 1919, the many service projects completed during the 100 years and the wonderful women who have been members of the International Organization. They attended the October 14th event in LeRoy when the LeRoy Historical Society celebrates the anniversary of the creation of the Donald Woodward Airport and its connection to Amelia Earhart (a member of Zonta) and her flight in The Friendship airplane across the Atlantic in 1928 (the plane was owned by Mr. Woodward). To honor Amelia, Zonta International offers several Fellowships to women pursuing PhD/ doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences or aerospace-related engineering around the globe. Women of any nationality pursing a PhD/ doctoral degree, who demonstrate a superior academic record in the field of aerospace-related sciences or aerospace-related engineering, are eligible and encouraged to apply at www.zonta.org or use the following link: h t t p s : / / w w w. z o n t a . o r g / G l o b a l - I m p a c t / Education/Amelia-Earhart-Fellowship The Zonta Holiday Festival is sponsored by the Zonta Club of Batavia/Genesee & The Z-Club.

Breakfast Pizza Put a healthy twist on pizza for a quick, satisfying breakfast kids and adults will love. Start with sliced naan or a whole wheat bagel. Toast to warm and add a smear of ricotta cheese. Then top with sliced tomatoes and sprinkle with a dash of fleur de sel and dried basil, if desired. If you prefer a sweeter pizza, skip the tomatoes and use sliced fruit instead. This tasty breakfast will fight hunger pangs straight until lunchtime.

As a result, they can be picky with regard to the vendors they use and the produce, meats, dairy, and other ingredients that they select. Many small, independently owned restaurants team up with local organic farmers and distributors to supply a farm-to-table experience that many diners now enjoy.

DID YOU KNOW? Nursing is one of the fastest-growing and longest-running occupations in the United States and Canada. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.

Night Line Haul Driver - CDL-A/DBLS GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can help people combat stress for several hours afterward.
