MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Get rid of your old holiday lights. Still using the same Christmas lights you used in 1995? Such lights are likely incandescent bulbs that are considerably less efficient than today’s LED Christmas lights. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy notes that LED lights consume 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. In addition, the OEERE says that LED holiday lights are easier to install and that as many as 25 strings of lights can be connected end-to-end without overloading a wall socket.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week Shortman is an 18-year-old red dun and white colored paint horse. My parents bought him for me five years ago for 4H and to help with my anxiety. Shortman has anxiety just like I do and doesn’t like new environments. He acts younger than his age but is very fun loving & curious. He likes to push around barrels & exercise balls as well as roll in the snow making snow Pegasus. Shortman is now used for mounted archery and hunter pace jumping competitions. He did not like jumping when we bought him but now, he gets eager when he sees jumps are set up. He is 15 hands tall (5 ft. at his back, like his owner) and 1,100 lbs. Shortman likes orange tic tacs, candy corn and molasses. He has been the best therapist, teacher and friend to his now 21-year-old owner. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: After having several strange-looking “pimples” on my thighs and one on my face, I was told it is lymphomatoid papulosis. One or two people in a million are diagnosed with this. I know that it is not contagious, but what is it? What causes it, how is it treated, and what can I do to avoid these? They take weeks to heal. -- R.R. ANSWER: Lymphomatoid papulosis is a rare disease. It is in the category of cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders. It is a chronic disease, and lasts years or even decades. The underlying cause is not known exactly, but it is related in many ways to other lymphoproliferative diseases, such as mycosis fungoides and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The cells of the skin lesions you notice have similar genetic rearrangements as lymphoma cells. Fortunately, LyP has an excellent prognosis, although people with LyP are at increased risk for developing one of these serious conditions. The papules of LyP can appear on the extremities or the hands and face, and less commonly on other places on the body. They may start off as small red papules, get larger and then crust over. Often, several exist at different stages. Diagnosis may not be easy, as it takes an experienced dermatopathologist (pathologist with special training in skin diseases) and enough tissue to look at the genetics of the cells. Treatment is not necessary for every person with LyP. But for those who do require it, one might be ultraviolet-light treatment. More severe cases may require methotrexate, but this needs to be managed by an expert. Experts have recommended six-month visits to evaluate for early signs of enlarging lymph nodes, which might indicate the development of a lymphoproliferative disorder. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion, as a noninterested party, on laser therapy. I see many ads touting its advantages and success in treating bone-on-bone knee osteoarthritis. My orthopedic doctor recommended knee replacements on both my knees. I had arthroscopic surgery on the left knee four years ago and was recommended total knee replacement on the right knee about three years ago. How long can I put off surgery, and what is the outlook if I don’t have it done? I am an 80-year-old female in good health, except for the osteoarthritis. I use naproxen when needed. If it works, I think laser therapy would be less pain and downtime. ANSWER: Low-level laser therapy has been studied in people with osteoarthritis, and some of the studies have shown reductions in pain and stiffness. The laser is thought to have an effect on circulation. However, the laser generally has been effective in people with mild to moderate disease, and bone-on-bone is severe. I think laser may help some people, but some of the benefit probably is due to placebo effect. As far as putting off your knee replacements, I have been through this many times with my own patients. Some get it done right away; others avoid surgery until they can’t take it any longer, with worsening pain, stiffness and inability to exercise. Most people have told me that they wish they had done the surgery sooner. By the way, I am interested in helping people, but have no conflicts of interest. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. “Affluence without simplicity is a giant trap. Every saint who ever lived, lived simply… not because he was holier but because he was smarter…”

~ Quoted in Christian Science Monitor

No matter how much material things we acquire, most of us want more. We can recite quite a list of things we think we’d enjoy having if only we could afford them. The world’s wealthiest people are the first to admit that money cannot buy happiness. The smartest people have learned that the mere accumulation of things will not bring lasting satisfaction. Why not be content to live as the smartest saints do… simply. We are always available to help in any way that is needed. We help individuals to make funeral arrangements both at time of need or well in advance of need. How can we help you?

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The arts are a strong part of the Arian aspect, with music becoming more dominant. An important decision looms as a longtime relationship takes an unexpected turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Surrounding yourself with beautiful things helps restore the Taurean soul. Enjoy an art exhibit, for example. Or redecorate your personal space with something truly splendid. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Some colleagues might try to talk you out of what they insist is a risk, but which you consider an opportunity. As usual, follow your own good sense when making your decision. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A workplace change you might have worried about soon proves to be highly favorable for the clever Crab who is ready to take advantage of new opportunities opening up. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Congratulations. Your Leonine pride is polished to a dazzling new brilliance thanks to your success in winning support for your new project from even the most doubtful of detractors. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unsettling rumor about a colleague’s apparently regrettable behavior is soon proved groundless, allowing you to enjoy the upcoming end-of-year festivities in a happy mood. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your success in helping to create a harmonious environment out of a chaotic situation earns you the admiration of someone who could become an important new presence in your life. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your Scorpion’s sense of loyalty could find you leading a passionate defense of a loved one you feel is being unfairly treated. The week’s end brings long-awaited family news. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your keen instincts are once more on high alert as you find yourself being pressured to make a quick decision about a certain matter. More facts come to light by week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) An unexpected workplace development could disrupt some family plans. A full explanation, however, averts domestic discord. A financial matter continues to need attention. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Spend time away from distractions to reassess some recent moves that might not have worked out as you had hoped. What you learn could be invaluable for future decision-making. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A recent act of kindness is a reminder of how important your friends are to you. You might want to show your appreciation by hosting a special preNew Year’s party just for them. BORN THIS WEEK: You always try to do your best, which sometimes causes you to be critical of those who don’t live up to your standards. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Keep Winter Energy Bills in Check (Family Features) As w inter temperatures drop, the potential for higher utility bills goes up. Taking steps ahead of the cold season can help you trim costs and make your home more energy efficient, keeping those utility bills in check even as the w inter w eather rages. Before w inter w eather sets in for your part of the country, take some time to assess your home for potential problem areas and improvements that can help low er your energy costs. Lighting. Though turning off unneeded lights is a smart strategy any time of year, it’s especially helpful during the w inter months w hen utility expenses can add up. New technology lets you manage your lights aw ay from home using an app on your smartphone. Water heaters. Heat isn’t the only system that gets an extra w orkout come w inter. Cooler house temperatures may require w ater heaters to w ork harder, so ensuring you have a model w ell-suited to your family’s year-round needs is key. In fact, heating w ater is the second source of energy use in the residential home after space heating and cooling, w ith standard electric w ater heaters costing the average homeow ner $585 every year to operate. Thermostat. A programmable thermostat is easy to install and saves energy (and money) by automatically adjusting to predetermined temperature settings. Air leaks. The Lights Return to Fargo Road By Amanda Dudek

We make it easy for you to GO GREEN… We will recycle your old phone books and magazines. Simply bring them in to our Avon Office only during regular business hours. Our production team will shred and bundle this paper for trucking to the mill.

There is something cheerful and comforting about lights, particularly Christmas lights, and the DiSalvos on Fargo Road in Stafford near Batavia have Christmas lights in droves. On their over 140acre property of Swallowvale, the DiSalvos have been hosting their enormous display of Christmas lights, figures and scenes for more than 20 years. These displays include classic cartoon and Christmas characters, trains and other vehicles with wheels which appear to move, a large Nativity scene and so much more. The DiSalvos’ holiday display has become such a destination for area neighbors that when they decided to take a well-earned family vacation last year and therefore were not present to construct and put on their annual Christmas lights extravaganza, there were those who were concerned, even though their upcoming absence was the subject of an article in the local paper! This year, the DiSalvo Christmas lights display has returned and is arguably as spectacular as ever. The DiSalvos have somewhat consolidated their display elements compared to the expanse of years past. The focus has shifted to the characters, and the inflatables of the past are no more. The display area has also been condensed to a more manageable stretch around the front and sides of their home. Not only does this make set up and maintenance a bit less extensive for the DiSalvos, but it also allows guests to see more while walking less. Guests are, as always, warmly invited to park along the road in front of the property and

walk through the gorgeous scenes, a brilliantly-lit winter wonderland. When visitors approach the brightly-lit arch of the entrance, they can hear Christmas music dancing on the evening air. Santas, snowmen, penguins, elves, Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, Wisemen, Rudolph and a giant snow globe sign with a Christmas Day countdown are just some of the features that immediately draw the eye. It surely touches the child inside each guest, and it is for these guests, especially the little ones, that the DiSalvos create their awe-inspiring display each year. While much has remained the same for this megawatt, Fargo Road Christmas spectacle, some of the pieces – which were quite demanding to set up – have found new homes with neighbors this year. These include the Alps, the Village, the fireplace and the gingerbread boy and girl. Also, the DiSalvos have passed the tradition of Santa’s Visit on Kids’ Night – previously the second Tuesday in December – to The Original Red Osier Landmark Restaurant in Stafford. While the cost to put on such a show of Christmas Spirit remains a mystery, the DiSalvos’ good-natured joke about rodents running on a wheel perfectly captures their selfless generosity.

Your 3 tips to overcome everyday aches and pains Pain is a significant concern for many people. Estimates from the International Association for the Study of Pain suggest that one in five adults across the globe suffer from pain. Pain can affect anyone, even people who have not been in an accident or suffered an injury while playing a sport or performing another physical activity. For example, lower back pain, which can be caused by sitting at a desk for long stretches of time, is the most common type of chronic pain in the United States. Such pain may be unavoidable, but that does not mean it and other types of everyday aches and pains cannot be overcome. 1. Begin a well-rounded exercise regimen. Regular exercise that includes both strength training and cardiovascular exercise increases blood flow and helps build a strong core. A strong core supports the spine and reduces the pressure on it, making it less likely people who sit for long stretches at a time will end the day with lower back pain. Routine exercise also helps other areas of the body by keeping muscles loose and flexible. Before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women, especially those with existing aches and pains, should consult their physicians about which exercises they should do and which they might want to avoid. 2. Employ RICE. RICE, which stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation, can help men and women overcome the aches and pains that result as the body ages and tendons begin to lose some of their elasticity. RICE might be most helpful for people who have been diagnosed with tendinitis. Athletes over 40 who engage in activities that require repetitive motion might need to take more days off between rounds of golf or other competitive and/or repetitive activities. If tendinitis

flares up, take some time away, icing any sore areas, wrapping them in bandages, and elevating them while resting. Athletes rarely want to sit on the sidelines, but a few days off can go a long way toward alleviating the pain associated with tendinitis. 3. Recognize your body may develop some limitations. Age should not prevent you from being physically active, and numerous studies have touted the benefits of continuing to exercise into your golden years. However, as the body ages, muscle fibers become less dense, resulting in a loss of flexibility that increases the risk of injury and/or soreness. As men and women grow older, they shouldn’t abandon activities like gardening or strength training. But they may need to scale back on the intensity with which they perform such activities. Doing so can prevent the kinds of muscle strains associated with aging. Pain affects more than one billion people across the globe. But some simple strategies can help people overcome pain and enjoy a rich quality of life.

Congratulations to the Caledonia Fire Department for taking first place in the Scottsville Parade of Lights truck decorating contest. Great job! Just wanted to give a shout out to anyone who has outside decorations up and lit during the early mornings and afternoons. I drive a school bus for pre-k kids and it makes their day as we run around town picking up kids. I hear a lot of ahhhs and ooos. Thanks...it gives the kids something to watch for instead of "are we there yet". P.S. I would remind people to pay attention and not run the stop signs on the busses...it is a BIG ticket and points on your license.

When you're out walking after dark, be sure to wear dark clothes (no reflecting gear) and walk not facing traffic. Before you do, also remember to update your will and leave final instructions for your memorial service. (When out walking after dark, always wear

Thank you to the Livingston County community for generously supporting the St. Pauly Clothing shed at St. Timothy Lutheran Church. Profits realized from your donations this year benefited Teresa House, LC Habitat for Humanity, Focus on the Children, Livonia Toys for Tots, Livonia Food Pantry, and the new Open-Door Mission’s Coldwater Women and Children’s Residential Home. Thank you for partnering with us in this opportunity to be in community service.

At the Victor Walmart on Saturday a couple ahead of me were purchasing several dozen red roses. When they were done the young gentleman loaded my groceries into my cart and added a dozen red roses...then they left. When I turned to pay the cashier, she said it was all paid for and I was to get the change from the money he had given her. They made my day. Thank you so much! A Thankful Senior Citizen

What happened to Bussers? Waitress/waiter cleans your table, sticks fingers inside glasses, then brings your food and his/her thumb is in your plate! No wonder people are sick. Gross. Hire Bussers. I must vent to the person who moved into an apartment complex. You must remember, it's a lot different than living in your own home. People do walk in the upstairs apartment; they do play music; they do watch TV. If you are not happy with a downstairs apartment, then you should not have moved to a downstairs apartment, or you

If you're a younger Homeowner, please consider your elderly neighbors, don't leave them to pick up all YOUR blowing leaves....... I don't have 1 tree, you do & only once did you blow your leaves, 3 weeks ago, but you put it in front of our mail boxes & near the sign so the town couldn't pick them up. The storm drain is covered, so when it rained these past 3 weeks, I've had to use boots to get my mail due to the huge puddle...... I paid to have my yard raked twice, but your yard is still full. This is getting expensive. Please think of your elderly neighbors. Happy Holidays!!! PS this Santa isn't

giving you guys anything this year. Yeah, I’m not happy. I'm traveling straight, bus makes a left in front of me. In turning lane, woman who was on my bumper passed me, and there was a car in left lane. she couldn’t wait to shop, I guess. Who passes someone in a turning lane? Obviously an impatient too much in a hurry person. In a parking lot, salt sprayer spraying salt in parking lot, sprayed it all over me and the [person] had a smile on his face. Woman continually stopping and braking, letting everybody go across road, letting people turn left, kept on doing it, and my car skidded stopping, I had to keep watching her. Yes, I was doing the speed limit. No, I wasn’t tailgating. I’ll renew my license next year, but who really wants to?
