Provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Every year, starting in late December and continuing into March, male whitetailed deer shed their antlers as their testosterone levels drop in response to the lengthening days. By late winter and early spring, eager shed hunters head out into the woods and fields to look for these hidden treasures. Finding a single shed is a thrill, but finding a matching set, or those of a purely impressive adult buck, is worth more than their weight in gold to many. For the inexperienced, it might seem like looking for a needle in a haystack, but for the avid shed hunter with a trained eye it’s worth the effort. And, if your dog enjoys accompanying you in the woods, you can learn about shed hunting with a dog in the February 2017 issue of the Conservationist, a New York State Department of Conservation publication. Winter deer yards are good places to start. During bouts of extreme cold and snow, deer will congregate in lower elevation areas with good southern exposure and evergreen cover to break the wind. Experienced shed hunters scout
these areas pre-season in hopes of increasing their odds. Shed hunting is a great way to get outside as the weather breaks in late winter/early spring. It can also provide the experienced hunters with clues as to what kinds of bucks will be around in the fall during the next hunting season. Remember, “Let Young Bucks Go and Watch Them Grow” to see bucks with bigger, more impressive antlers -- a treasure worth looking for.

I nLoving M em ory Kevin “Cuso” Mancuso Thank You to everyone for the cards, flowers, food, donations, thoughts, prayers and kind words. A huge thank you to the Caledonia Community for all the love and support during this very difficult time for us. All of you who touched his life are truly amazing! To all his dearest and closest friends for all the help with the luncheon at Jones Hall and to Falcone’s Funeral Home and everyone from Our Lady of Mercy for the beautiful service. We are truly overwhelmed with everyone’s kindness.
“The future is the past returning through another gate....” ~ Arnold H. Glasgow Students of history tell us that we can foretell the future by reviewing the past. In fact, it has been suggested that we can control our own future by applying the lessons the past has taught us. It is to be hoped that mankind is making progress through the centuries and not merely repeating the same mistakes. However, to progress, we must make changes and improvement in the way we do things. Since history does seem to repeat, it gives us a valuable guide to help us determine what changes are needed and how to make them. We are proud of our excellent record for dedicated service to the families of this community. We suggest that you come in and get acquainted. Let us answer your questions without obligation.

PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL: The 2017 tax reform passed by Congress last month and approved by the President will not affect the taxes filed this year, but workers will soon start seeing an increase in their paychecks. What is your opinion of the tax reform? • I love getting more money in my paycheck! • The long-term effects far outweigh the benefits of a little extra cash. • I need to see the impact of the reform before I decide how I feel about it. Poll Ends: 02/06/18 Vote at:
www.gvpennysaver.com Poll Results: 01/30/18 How do you feel about the way our elected officials handle the negotiations that allow our government to continue functioning? • They all have their own agendas and do not care about the people they are elected to serve. – 55.6% • Budget negotiations should be limited to budget items and not include other pieces of legislation. – 33.3% • I think that my opinion doesn’t matter! – 11.1%

Tulip was only 6 wks. old when we took her from the mill, so she didn’t have any of the typical mill issues. Through a series of events (read more on our website) Tulip is now seeking a home with no other dogs or cats. She is crate trained. She is 7 years old.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Should Women Still Take Estrogen? --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question concerning estradiol. My gynecologist has me taking 1 milligram of estradiol daily. My internist recommends that I not take it. Which recommendation should I follow? I have never had hot flashes, so that is not a problem. My internist says that I need to gradually stop taking the estradiol. He says that this medicine has more problems than benefits. It is hard to choose what to do. What do you recommend? -- H.L. ANSWER: Back in the 1990s, we often recommended that women take estrogen in order to prevent problems, in addition to treating hot flashes. Two important studies came out showing that estrogen appeared to cause problems as well as prevent them. The definitive answer as to whether estrogen causes more problems than it prevents still isn’t known, and it probably depends on many factors. The term “estrogen” as I am using it refers to a group of related compounds. Estradiol is sometimes referred to as “bioidentical,” since it is the same hormone that a woman’s body makes, as opposed to conjugated equine estrogen (Premarin), which was most commonly used in the 1990s and earlier. The type of estrogen may make a difference in terms of risk. Also, estrogen is seldom given without a progesterone compound in women who have not had their uterus removed, and the type of progesterone appears to make a major difference in risk. Briefly, the evidence suggests that estrogen reduces the risk of colon cancer and of osteoporosis and fractures. However, it increases the risk of blood clots. The largest areas of confusion are in breast cancer and heart disease. For conjugated estrogens with medroxyprogesterone, which has the best information, for 1,000 women in 10 years there were seven more heart attacks, eight more strokes, eight more blood clots in the lungs and eight more invasive breast cancers, but six fewer colon cancers and five fewer hip fractures. Recent data suggest that women who start estrogen immediately at menopause have a lower risk of heart disease than those who start five or 10 years after menopause (in fact, they may have an overall lower risk, compared with women who don’t take estrogen). Women who took estrogen alone did not have an increased risk of breast cancer. Because of the known harms of estrogen, at this time neither I nor any expert body recommends taking estrogen just to prevent problems. Until new studies become available, since you have no hot flashes, I agree with your internist. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I wanted to tell you of the unbelievable relief I’ve gotten from the small, very painful cracks that used to develop at the ends of my fingers next to the nails, usually in the winter. Since I started taking 1,000 mg of fish oil once a day, I have had only one crack. -- R.L.S. ANSWER: I couldn’t find any studies on this, but anecdotal reports say fish oil may be helpful and is unlikely to harm. It’s reasonable to give it a try. I would recommend a supplement that contains both EPA and DHA. The Costco brand was found to be of high quality. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy NOCTURNAL BRUXISM It is estimated that between 30 and 40 million U.S. children and adults grind their teeth at night. Not only does the grinding sound associated with “nocturnal bruxism” awaken and alarm sleepers in the same room as the tooth-grinder, but it can also cause wear and tear on the teeth and damage bone and gums. This rhythmic activity of the jawbone forcing contact between dental surfaces has also been linked to headaches, joint discomfort, muscle aches, and premature tooth loss. Many people are unaware they have a problem with tooth grinding until a sleep partner points out the fact. This should prompt a visit to the dentist, who can prescribe a mouth guard to protect the grinder’s teeth. Bruxism isn’t only a nighttime activity. Some tooth-grinders continue this damaging practice throughout the day. Whether you are in our office for
bruxism or just for a simple cleaning, our personal, casual, and relaxed style in providing quality dental care will help put you at ease. We’ll take the time to get to know your needs, answer your questions about the latest techniques and materials, and make sure that you are comfortable. Find out just how stress-free and pleasant a visit to the dentist can be – call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for complete family dental care at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Aside from being a symptom of stress and anxiety, bruxism can be the result of the body’s reaction when the teeth do not line up or come together properly (malocclusion).

Portion Size Tricks The average portion size has tripled in recent years, which could be the reason why many people are overweight or obese. A healthier diet often starts with eating less. Here are some easy ways to remember just how much to eat when sitting down at the dinner table. * A portion of lean meat should be about 3 ounces, or the size of a palm. * A cup of mixed greens or vegetables is about the size of a baseball. * A medium piece of fruit is the size of a tennis ball. * A CD is the size of the pancake you should eat. * An ounce of hard cheese is the size of a tube of lipstick. * Keep burgers to the size of a mayonnaise jar top. * A tablespoon of oil is the size of one checker. W hile exploring tactics for cutting energy costs, there might be no more critical consideration than w indow s. A home w ith inefficient w indow s is almost like a home w ith a hole in the w all -- and installing energy-efficient w indow s can shave up to 15 percent off heating and cooling bills, according to estimates based on data set forth in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Star Savings Estimates (w w w.energystar.gov/w indow s). Numerous factors determine a w indow ’s energy effic ienc y. W indow s w ith a low er “ U-Factor,” for example, are preferable in colder regions because they allow less heat to escape. Here are some other tips to find the best w indow s for your home: • Consider your conservation goals. One homeow ner may simply w ant greater energy efficiency. Another may be draw n to “ passive” or “ net zero” building practices -w hose requirements are designed to maintain comfortable temperatures w ith incredibly minimal heating and cooling systems. • Don’t sacrifice beauty for efficiency. W indow s should be beautiful, functional, durable and energy efficient. • Add w indow treatments. Certain w indow treatments also can help maintain comfortable temperatures in a home. • Consult an expert. Homeow ners should speak w ith a professional w hen selecting w indow s, to explore and identify solutions for their home and climate.
SIM PLE WAYS TO TRIM YOUR ENERGY BILL THIS W INTER Inspect w indow s and doors. W indow s and doors are often to blame w hen energy bills start to skyrocket. As homes age, cracks can develop around w indow s and doors, allow ing precious and expensive heat to escape. Caulk around any w indow s that have cracks (you may feel a draft around such w indow s) and replace ineffective w eatherstripping around doors, w hich is noticeable if light is visible around doors’ edges.

Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

Your Assistive devices help people remain mobile Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. The following are some of the common types of mobility devices available for purchase. • Canes: Canes are handheld devices that provide a little extra stability or support to weakened limbs. Canes are easily transported and can assist those who need only a little help. • Standard walkers: Also known as medical walkers, standard walkers offer substantial support and must be lifted to move. That requires upper body strength, which can be difficult for some to maintain on long trips. • Rolling walkers: Rolling walkers are similar to standard walkers. But rolling walkers have wheels, either on the front only or on both sets of legs. They are somewhat less stable than standard walkers. Rolling walkers with wheel-locking devices may offer stability when needed. Some rolling walkers are called “rollators.” • Wheelchairs: Standard wheelchairs must be powered by the

person in the chair or by someone pushing it from behind. This can be difficult for people with minimal upper body strength. Mechanical wheelchairs are powered with a lever or button. Some people may opt for motorized scooters over bulkier wheelchairs when possible. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

And ANTIQUES Savvy shoppers often begin their quests for vintage signs at estate and garage sales. Many times people stash away old belongings in attics and basements, unaware that vintage items are highly valuable to others. Saturday, March 24 - 9 AM GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED • Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. • Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible.

• Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

DID YOU KNOW? Nursing is one of the fastest-growing and longest-running occupations in the United States and Canada. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.
