I need a home Bugsy: I am a sweet boy who loves attention and is eager to please! I love to run and play, but I am also a lap loving snuggler who would watch TV with you for hours. I am not a big barker or noise maker...I am rather quiet and just want your attention and love. I like to make my bed like a child makes forts. I am goofy about my nesting and my foster parents can’t stop laughing when I do it. My adoption fee is $50. Driving tips for w inter w eather Snow, ice, slush and other w inter driving challenges can threaten both driver and passenger safety, and adding distractions into the m ix only exacerbates the situation. So it m ay be best to sim ply drive w ith caution and focus, to stay on the road this w inter. Put distractions on ice. Despite m any recent public service announcem ents and new s articles on the dangers of texting and driving, drivers betw een the ages of 18 and 35 say texting is their top distraction w hile on the road. Other distractions include talking on the phone, talking to other passengers and eating w hile driving. Check your tire tread to prepare for snow. Worn tread is the No. 1 cause of skidding during the w inter season, so it is im portant to m ake sure your tires are up to the task before hitting the road. A quick w ay to do this is to check your tires’ tread depth indicators. Tread depth indicators are sm all raised bars that run in-betw een a tire’s tread grooves. When a tire’s tread is w orn dow n to these indicator bars, it’s tim e to change to a new set of tires. Check your tire pressure. Every 10-degree drop in air tem perature can actually cause a vehicle’s tires to lose up to 2 pounds per square inch (psi) in tire pressure. Im proper tire pressure can result in increased tread w ear and low ered perform ance, factors that are highly detrim ental to one’s safety in w inter driving conditions.

Snow tires are typically manufacturered the previous summer, meaning inventory is finite, according to Consumer Reports. Drivers w ho w ait until the first snow storm to purchase their snow tires may encounter limited inventory and find it difficult to locate the right size tire for their vehicles. That’s w hy it’s important to shop early.

CROSSWORD

“Conditions are never just right....” ~ William Feather Feather is talking to those of us who never seem to manage to get started toward our goals. We resolve to do better, to accomplish more, to eliminate our bad habits or to help others, but somehow we never actually start. We explain (to ourselves) that we’re waiting for the right conditions to prevail. In truth, the conditions may be exactly right but our excuses are based on labeling current conditions as unsuitable. If we really want to accomplish anything, we must accept conditions as they are, or alter them to better suit our needs. We are well qualified by training and experience to provide comforting help to bereaved families We will provide any information about funerals you may desire. Phone us, please.

General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On March 12, 1933, eight days after his inauguration, President Franklin Roosevelt gives his “fireside chat,” a radio broadcast directly from the White House. Roosevelt explained his decision to close the nation’s banks to stop mass withdrawals.

Understanding, preventing and managing osteoarthritis The most common chronic condition of the joints in both the United States and Canada, osteoarthritis, affects roughly 30 million people in just those two countries alone. While osteoarthritis, or OA, can affect people of all ages, it’s most common in men and women over the age of 65. Understanding osteoarthritis and how to prevent and manage the disease can help men and women over the age of 50 reduce their risk and live more comfortably even if they develop OA. What is osteoarthritis? According to the Arthritis Foundation, healthy joints are covered by cartilage, a flexible connective tissue that covers the end of each bone. Cartilage facilitates motion of the joints and serves as a cushion between the bones. When a person has OA, cartilage breaks down, causing swelling and pain and affecting the mobility of the joint. Over time, OA can worsen and cause bones to break down and develop bone spurs, which form when bones meet each other in the joints. OA can even advance to a point where cartilage wears away and bone rubs against bone, creating even more pain while damaging the joints even further. What causes osteoarthritis? Once considered a byproduct of the wear and tear the human body naturally endures over a lifetime, OA is now viewed as a disease, notes the AF. The following are some potential causes of OA. · Genes: The AF notes that certain genetic traits can increase a person’s likelihood of developing OA. Collagen is a protein that makes up cartilage, and, while rare, a genetic defect that affects the body’s production of cartilage can lead to OA occurring in people as young as 20 years old. Researchers have also noted that the gene FAAH is more commonly found in people with OA of the knee than

OATKA EDITION

in people who don’t have the disease. FAAH has been previously linked with pain sensitivity. · Weight: Being overweight increases a person’s risk for a host of ailments and diseases, and OA can be counted among them. Extra weight puts additional pressure on hips and joints, and over time those extra pounds can cause cartilage to break down more quickly than it would if the body was not carrying extra weight. · Injury: Men and women who have suffered injuries to their joints may be at greater risk of developing OA than those with no such injury history. · Overuse: Overuse of joints, tendons and ligaments can accelerate the breakdown of cartilage and increase a person’s risk of developing OA. Cartilage also can break down more quickly in the bodies of athletes and people whose careers require them to stand for extended periods of time, bend over frequently and/or lift heavy items. · Preexisting conditions: Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, hemochromatosis and acromegaly may also contribute to the development of OA among people diagnosed with such disorders. Prevention and management of OA Men and women who maintain healthy weights and exercise regularly and appropriately may be able to prevent the onset of OA. Appropriate exercises include strength training that focuses on building muscles around the joints, even if those joints are already affected by OA. Strong muscles around the joints can reduce the pain associated with OA, while range-of-motion exercises can improve flexibility of the joints and reduce stiffness. Aerobic exercise also helps men and women maintain healthy weights while facilitating weight loss for those who are already overweight. Those already diagnosed with OA should speak with their physicians before beginning an exercise regimen, and such conversations can also include discussions about the various medications that can be used to reduce symptoms of OA. More information about OA is available at www.arthritis.org.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On March 6, 1951, the espionage trial of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg begins after the couple is accused of running a spy ring and selling top-secret atomic bomb technology to Russia. The Rosenbergs were convicted, and were the only American civilians to be executed for espionage-related activity during the Cold War.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

VAPING IS AS HARMFUL AS SMOKING While e-cigarettes (electronic cigarettes) are marketed as a safer alternative to regular cigarettes, the chemicals in e-cigarette vapors have been found to be just as damaging (sometimes more damaging) as tobacco to gums. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 16% of high school students reported using the devices in 2015, up from only 1.5% in 2011. While e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, they do include nicotine and other chemicals such as flavoring agents. These battery-operated devices house a heating element that vaporizes the liquid in the cartridge, producing a vapor that is inhaled. “Vaping” was found to kill cells in the gums and mouth after just a few days, with mentholflavored vapor posing the most harm. Nicotine reduces the amount of blood that can flow through your

veins. Without sufficient blood flow, the gums do not get the oxygen and nutrients they need to stay healthy. Nicotine chokes tissues in the mouth from the blood it needs to survive, causing death of the gum tissues. We do our best to ensure our patients can get the gum disease care they need in one convenient location. To schedule a consultation, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at (585) 343-4246 or visit us at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Since smoking either tobacco products or e-cigarettes destroys the defensive barrier in the mouth that staves off infection and inflammation, gum disease and oral cancer are more likely to develop.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I took an aspirin for a seeming heart attack and went to the hospital, where I was asked if I had taken any meds. I answered “no,” and was medicated; the result was panic for the doctors, as my heart rate slowed to a dangerous rate. With care and an extra day in the hospital, I was released. My ignorance about medicines was scary. I think that it should be emphasized that “meds” does not mean only prescriptions. Tell the doctor, “I took an aspirin!” -- R.G. ANSWER: Indeed, your doctors should know about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter, vitamins and other supplements. Sometimes women forget to mention their oral contraceptives. Aspirin is a powerful medicine, not to be taken lightly. That being said, I am not sure why your heart rate slowed to a dangerous rate. Beta blockers usually are given for suspected heart attack, and some people do have dramatic responses to beta blockers, and their heart rates slow way down. I can’t explain why aspirin could have made that more likely, since aspirin shouldn’t slow down the heart rate. I also couldn’t find any interaction between beta blockers and aspirin. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 78-year-old female who has had three orthopedic surgeries (hip repair, hip replacement and knee replacement) with spinal anesthesia in two years. Each time, the anesthesia has left me with severe orthostatic hypotension requiring medication for months. If I should ever need surgery again, is there any other anesthetic that would be just as effective and not make me ill? -- A.P. ANSWER: This actually is a very common problem, with at least half of people undergoing orthopedic surgery having some orthostatic hypotension (a lowering of blood pressure upon sitting or standing) immediately after surgery. You have had a very prolonged reaction. I spoke with an anesthesiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, who told me that the issue could have been any of the anesthetic and adjuvant agents that were used. He recommended more salt and water before any operation and longer time in progressively upright positions before trying to get up post-operatively. Finally, your next anesthesiologist could look at your preoperative and anesthesia records and try to figure out what agent you had that was most likely to have been causing this, so to avoid its use next time. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Two lab tests done in the past two years show that my kidneys are not functioning at 100 percent. Is there any action I can take (such as diet or medication) to keep these figures from worsening? -- L.M. ANSWER: Kidney function tends to decrease with age, but kidneys also can be damaged from high blood pressure, diabetes, some medications and many other causes. If kidney function is low, your doctor should look at your prescription medication and carefully evaluate their dosing. Also, anti-inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen or naproxen should be minimized. Even Tylenol can cause long-term kidney damage in high doses for long periods of time. Managing any chronic illnesses and avoiding toxic drugs are the most important actions. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Simple Ways to Manage Pain To help reduce and prevent pain, try these easy tips to keep you doing the things you love while helping minimize pain and keeping that spring in your step this winter: Sit Tall: If you have a desk job, proper posture can help to reduce back pain as you age. Sit with your back straight with your shoulders back; distribute your body weight evenly on both hips, bend your knees at right angles and keep your feet flat on the floor. Be Flexible: Whether it’s weekly yoga, or standing up and stretching between long periods of sitting, flexibility can help you stay fit and strong. One simple stretch: stand with your feet shoulder width apart, place hands on your lower back with finger tips pointing down, slowly lean back as far as comfortable while looking up at the ceiling, then return to start. Repeat five times. Eat Smart: Reduce the risk of inflammation by incorporating antiinflammatory foods such as tomatoes, olive oil, nuts, fatty fish, fruits and vegetables into your diet as much as possible. Secret s t o k eeping an organized shed A w ell-organized shed can save homeow ners time and energy, as it’s easy to abandon or delay a project if you can’t find that pair of w ork gloves you stashed. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just w hat needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed. M ake a pile of anything that w ill be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of w hat you have so you know w hether you’re missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another. Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment. Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good investments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to put scrap w ood to use to make your ow n storage shelves or a w ork bench. Extra kitchen cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items. In order to remember w here items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the w all so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of w hich tools are missing and w hich ones need to be purchased. Don’t forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools, such as rakes and shovels, on the inside of the doors so they w ill alw ays be easily accessible. You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for other areas of the home. For example, magnetic knife holders can be mounted to a shed w all to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. M etal funnels can hold tw ine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser. Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and children safe. M ake sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items. Roll in the law nmow er, w heelbarrow and any other cumbersome items. Now that more things are mounted vertically, you should find that you have more area to move around.

My husband and I would like to say thank you to the family that stopped when they saw our dog Newman walking down the shoulder of Big Tree Road dragging his cable that had broken. We would also like to thank the young man for walking him back home and coming to our door to let us know that he had escaped. We appreciate your kindness. The other night my horses got out. A kind person pulled over to make sure someone knew, and then he patrolled Rt. 96 with his 4 ways on until we could recover them and left while we were still walking them home. Thank you, Good Samaritan, you potentially saved the lives of not just the horses but anyone who might have hit them. The Teresa House Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers would like to send many thanks to everyone who so generously

donated Wish List items. Our supply pantry is much fuller because of the generosity of our caring community. We wouldn’t be here without you! The Perinton Historical Society Board of Trustees would to thank the businesses, many of which are FPMA members, individuals, organizations, and Society members who together were responsible for donating 52 beautifully decorated trees, wreaths, gift baskets, gift certificates and other one-of-a-kind items for the Perinton Historical Society’s third annual Yuletide Traditions fundraiser. The generosity of so many bidders who supported this fundraiser during the four-week long silent auction raised over $2,100 to benefit the Perinton Historical Society’s educational programs, activities, exhibits, as well as operational expenses at the Fairport Museum. I would like to thank again the kind gentleman who paid a rather large amount for my groceries 2 weeks ago at the Wegmans Calkins Rd. store. He wanted to “pay it forward” and I will do the same. It was a big help to a senior citizen on a fixed income! JW

Street in our well-to-do town. Every surrounding village has Christmas lights except us! We’re sorry but the dark dreary pennants don’t cut it. The Christmas spirit is not to be found here.

To the man in the black SUV...It was 20 degrees today (Wednesday 12/14) and yet you “HAD” to take your barking dog to the gas station! I love animals; I really do, but come on! The poor thing was yapping the whole time! Annoying and ridiculous! I feel bad for him/her! It’s BITTER cold out, people! Cats and dogs should be kept inside during cold weather. It’s a common belief that dogs and cats are more resistant than people to cold weather because of their fur, but it’s untrue. Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should be kept inside. INSIDE, meaning not three walls and a hole, with no insulation! On top of having chicken wire as a floor, that’s cruel!! Once again this year we have no illuminated Christmas lights along Main

Please do NOT burn wood in your fireplace. The smell lingers especially in the village. We cannot breathe; therefore, we cannot go out nor take the dog out due to the terrible smell. We have a bad sinus infection and it gets worse with the smell. Please use a clean burning wood or use an electric heater.

What does it say about a person who trespasses onto posted property and then steals your game cam when it records his being there!? To me, it is a hunter-not a sportsman, (if sport means taking another creature’s life)leaving a bad message for those who a least respect law and the rights of others! This individual, in addition to being a trespasser, is now also a common thief who feels entitled to make his own rules.

Perinton Food Shelf - Moving Ahead to a New Location By Renee Barry The Perinton Food Shelf was founded in the early 80’s by a consortium of area churches in an effort to help local people with a shortterm food emergency. Early on the Food Shelf operated out of limited available church space. In the late 80’s Fairport Village graciously made the empty Old Northside Fire Hall on North Main street available for use by the Food Shelf, a really big assist to the Food Shelf’s operations. In 2006 the Village felt compelled to sell the building and a fund drive supported by local residents allowed the Food Shelf to purchase the site. Since then client needs have expanded from an average of food for 22,000 meals a year in the 2000 to 2009 period to 35,000 for 2013 to 2016. New services were also offered such as “Yummy Boxes” for school age children to help replace the school lunch program for the summer and fresh produce to support a healthier diet. The use of Foodlink as a vendor a few years ago helped to reduce costs, but created logistics problems with pallet loads delivered to the front sidewalk and little storage room for the larger deliveries.

The need for more space that hopefully included improved parking for deliveries and pick-up was overwhelming. A year long search for suitable space identified a good fit at the Canal Works on Turk Hill Road near the canal. More space combined with good access makes it better for now and adequate for the future as well. This new location combined with the generous community support and the efforts of the 100 plus volunteers will allow the Food Shelf to continue to meet the emergency food needs of Perinton residents. For more information on the Perinton Food Shelf, please visit their website at http://perintonfoodshelf.org/

In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.
