VALENTINES TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

VA L L E J E W E L E R S 21 Jackson Street • 343-3372 ValleJewelersBatavia.com *With this ad. Some exclusions apply. See store for details.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe. Come Valentine’s Day, candy, flowers and other gifts are exchanged between sweethearts in one of the many traditions associated with the holiday. The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the anniversary of his death. Others believe it was the Christian church’s way of Christianizing the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is now celebrated by millions and is one of the retail industry’s most lucrative shopping holidays.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

Handy Hacks * Repurpose coffee filters as holders for your sandwiches. They’re easy to hold and help keep your favorite toppings contained. * Up-cycle an empty six-pack container into a convenient cookout caddy to hold napkins, condiments and utensils. Not only is it quick to grab and place on the table, but it helps keep napkins from blowing away in a breeze. * For kabobs, keep wooden skewers from charring by soaking them in water before threading on ingredients. * Prepare toppings the night before and arrange them in a disposable foil pan for a quick and easy DIY topping bar.

Although this day devoted to love and exchanging gifts can be wasteful, that does not mean those with a mind toward green and simple living should ignore the holiday altogether. Valentine’s Day celebrations can be enjoyed in an eco-friendly way that can make this special day even more meaningful to eco-conscious couples.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy TEACHING YOUR CHILD TO BRUSH The best way to instill the habit of brushing teeth in children is to have them learn by example. Once children have watched their parents perform this twice-daily ritual and get the hang of it, parents should encourage their kids to brush their own teeth. First, children should learn to dab only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on their soft-bristled toothbrushes. They should then concentrate on gently brushing back and forth on the inside surface of each tooth, where bacteria-laden plaque is most likely to accumulate. After that, the outer surfaces should be brushed with the brush turned at an angle along the gumline. Before rinsing, children should try some tongue-brushing to introduce an element of fun into the process. Taught early enough, healthy habits turn into healthy lifestyles. Begin with proper brushing and

flossing techniques and a toothfriendly diet. Continue with regular professional care and cleanings for a beaming smile that will last a lifetime. If you would like more information on how to get your child’s dental experience off to a good start, we welcome your call at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246. We have both children and adults as patients here at 6 Batavia City Centre, because everyone, regardless of age, deserves a winning smile. P.S. Parents should floss for their children beginning at age four. By the time they reach age eight, most kids can begin flossing for themselves.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: A year ago, I broke out with pimples on my back, arms and thighs. They itched so badly I thought I would go mad. A dermatologist took a biopsy and told me it was an autoimmune disease called bullous pemphigoid. I was started on prednisone and doxycycline. When it cleared up, I would stop the medication, but it came back. The doctor said she thinks I’ll have to take medication for the rest of my life. I don’t like taking this medication, as it blurs my eyesight and I lose energy. I also have osteoporosis. I do take some vitamins. -- G.B. ANSWER: Bullous pemphigoid is an autoimmune disease that causes blisters, mostly in older adults. The blisters are large and tense (as opposed to pemphigus, an even more dangerous autoimmune disease, in which the blisters are soft). Bullous pemphigoid tends to come and go over months or even years. Diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy. The usual treatment for bullous pemphigoid is a corticosteroid, either topical or systemic. Since it was over such an extended area of your body, your dermatologist decided on systemic, at a moderate dose of 20 mg. Prednisone has many long-term side effects, including making your osteoporosis much worse. Further, I am concerned that the blurry vision could indicate the onset of diabetes or a cataract, as both are strongly associated with chronic steroid use. Your regular doctor should be testing you for diabetes and treating the osteoporosis, and should make sure that you see the eye doctor. Certain medications, such as the doxycycline she started you on, can reduce your need for steroids. Other medications used for autoimmune disease can further reduce the need for steroids, but azathioprine, methotrexate, mycophenolate and others have serious side effects of their own. Nicotinamide, also called vitamin B-3, can make the doxycycline more effective. Although bullous pemphigoid sometimes does go away, I agree with your doctor that you are likely to need some medication long term; however, she may be able to reduce the dosages. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My adult daughter contracted ringworm or some other fungus from her beautiful Border Collie. She has been using over-the-counter meds on the two of them for over 10 months! The dog is doing better than my daughter. Any solutions to get rid of this once and for all? -- E.B. ANSWER: Ten months is too long to treat something empirically. It’s time to find out what this fungus might be, and that means a visit to a dermatologist, who can do a culture of the infection to find out what it is. There are some unusual fungi that can be passed from animals (dogs, cats, pigs, horses, cattle) to humans and cause skin infection. Rarely is systemic treatment necessary. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. HISTORY: “The Summer of Love” in 1967 is associated with which U.S. city?

My Journey of Inspiration “Living the Dream” By Courtney Cullinan In 2009 Rick Cullinan climbed Kilimanjaro. He was in remission of esophageal cancer that would later take his life. “Living the Dream” became his famous quote when caught on video when he was interviewed. He celebrated the joy and beauty of this amazing experience as only someone who knows definitely that there are so many days offered on this earth. Ten years later his daughter Courtney will commemorate his life and passion in March 2019 on her journey to Tanzania to scale Mount Kilimanjaro. Her six-day trek will take her through every ecological zone on the planet. “When my dad died I felt empty. My outlook on life was changed.” Time doesn’t slow down, life doesn’t play favorites. I thought about how short 25 years was. If I have learned anything from my father’s life he never gave up. He put others’ needs before his own. To value each breath we take. To value the relationships of those we love. “A father is someone who guides his daughter through life and now, even in death, you are guiding me. You are constantly showing me that love never dies.”

It’s about giving back, too. I have chosen to raise money for the fight against cancer and donate it to the Wilmot Cancer Institute, but I need you. Your tax-deductible donations to the Wilmot Cancer Institute will ensure that cancer research, education, and other services will continue. To contribute, mail checks payable to the Wilmot Cancer Institute (note “on behalf of Courtney Cullinan”) to:

I would like to express my gratitude to Rick French and Yusuf for helping make my dream of this trip become reality. I would also like to thank my family and friends for their love and support on my journey. To my JOI family who has encouraged and guided me from day one, helping me prepare for my climb. Also, to the Wilmot Cancer Institute and Doctors for the treatment and hope you gave my father.

To contribute towards Courtney’s trip expenses mail checks payable to Pack, Paddle, & Ski (note “on behalf of Courtney Cullinan”) to the same address.

Over one million Americans are diagnosed with cancer, and it’s estimated that there were over 600,000 deaths in 2017. Cancer has touched every one of us in some way. This trip is not just about my own healing and a way to have a sense of closure.

For more information on the trip, contact Courtney at 585-447-3449, Tiffany Paine at the Wilmot Cancer Institute at 585-276-4715, or Rick French at Pack, Paddle, & Ski at 585-346-5597 (info@packpaddleski.com).

Driving tips for w inter w eather Snow, ice, slush and other w inter driving challenges can threaten both driver and passenger safety, and adding distractions into the m ix only exacerbates the situation. So it m ay be best to sim ply drive w ith caution and focus, to stay on the road this w inter. Put distractions on ice. Despite m any recent public service announcem ents and new s articles on the dangers of texting and driving, drivers betw een the ages of 18 and 35 say texting is their top distraction w hile on the road. Other distractions include talking on the phone, talking to other passengers and eating w hile driving. Check your tire tread to prepare for snow. Worn tread is the No. 1 cause of skidding during the w inter season, so it is im portant to m ake sure your tires are up to the task before hitting the road. A quick w ay to do this is to check your tires’ tread depth indicators. Tread depth indicators are sm all raised bars that run in-betw een a tire’s tread grooves. When a tire’s tread is w orn dow n to these indicator bars, it’s tim e to change to a new set of tires. Check your tire pressure. Every 10-degree drop in air tem perature can actually cause a vehicle’s tires to lose up to 2 pounds per square inch (psi) in tire pressure. Im proper tire pressure can result in increased tread w ear and low ered perform ance, factors that are highly detrim ental to one’s safety in w inter driving conditions.

Avoid hanging items that compromise visibility. M any drivers like to hang trinkets, fuzzy dice or personal photos from their vehicles’ rearview mirrors. Avoid hanging such items, w hich can prove distracting and res trict your view of the road.

There's so much beauty and kindness around us but it's too often overshadowed by sad news. My day was brightened, however, during a recent shopping trip when a lovely young lady stopped me and offered a beautiful bouquet of flowers. When she asked, "Would you like these?" I said, "That's so nice of you, but may I pay you for them?" She replied, "No I just want you to have them." She then offered the receipt for her purchase. On Wednesday, January 24th at Overwhelmed, I thanked her and the Applebee’s in Geneseo we gave her a big hug. Before we were enjoying lunch. When we parted, I asked for her name and went to pay our bill we were promised to pay this act of pleasantly surprised to hear that kindness forward. Not everyone two gentlemen on their lunch believes in angels, I know, but I break had noticed us, two Vets and met mine on January 19 in the their spouses, and had paid our produce aisle at Calkins Road bill. This was greatly appreciated. Wegmans. Her name was Hanna.

I want to express my deepest appreciation for the wonderful folks who came to my rescue on Sunday, Jan. 28, when I fell on ice in Geneseo while walking my dog, and broke my leg. Within less than a minute a kind gentleman stopped his car to see what he could do to help. When I said I was unable to stand, and didn't have my phone with me, he called 911. “If you observe people, you’ll realize that the self-made ones have an abundance of working parts....” ~ Bob Talbert

Stone saying “cheese” with his snowman creation.

Probably everyone admires the self-made person… the one who had a lowly start and no special advantages, yet became a big success by his own, unaided efforts. What is the secret of such achievement? Well, they probably had quick minds and enjoyed good health, but the one thing that always characterizes successful people is their willingness to apply themselves, to work! Without work, few of us would amount to much. It helps to have “an abundance of working parts”. If tragedy should strike at a distant location, call us first. THE BOB FRANKEN COLUMN By Bob Franken

Sad Advice From the Poet “If the facts are against you, argue the law. If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell.” We can thank Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and biographer Carl Sandburg for that bit of wisdom. It’s standard operating procedure for trial lawyers and certainly for politicians, both of whom could be best described as “anti-poets.” It’s clearly a way of life for the most obscene practitioner of these dark arts. I refer, of course, to the table-pounder in chief Donald Trump, who has gone quite far with it. His accomplishments include winning the presidency and allegedly having sex with Stormy Daniels. But I digress. Notice that I said “allegedly.” There is an even more jarring “allegedly,” this one being the alleged crime that Trump himself may have committed. Special counsel Robert Mueller appears to be vigorously exploring whether the president obstructed justice as Mueller ratchets up his investigation into whether Trump or figures in Trump’s campaign colluded with the Russian government in the alleged (there’s that word again) theft of the U.S. election. He and his people have interrogated Attorney General Jeff Sessions and have questioned James Comey, who was FBI director until President Trump fired him. Most ominously, Mueller now is negotiating with the White House to set parameters for questioning POTUS himself. It’s fair to point out that obstruction of justice is extremely hard to pin down. What might not be so elusive is a charge of money laundering by Trump and his circle of family and associates. That brings us back to that Carl Sandburg quote. The Donald Trump variation would be something like: “When the facts are against you, scream ‘fake news.’ If the law is against you, discredit the investigators. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the social media (or in his case, the antisocial media) and tweet like hell.” He and his protectors are trying to argue that the investigators are so biased against him that they cannot possibly do so credibly. He constantly makes accusations against Hillary Clinton and the Clintons in general, and he insists that this whole charge of Russian collusion is just sour grapes, an alibi for Democrats because Hillary forfeited the election to him. Meanwhile, Democrats continue to act like puppies who roll over on their backs the moment Trump and his pack of Republicans growl or even lift their legs to mark their territory. Their territory includes all of Washington, and the GOP made that abundantly clear with the confrontation that resulted in the brief government shutdown. It was brief because the Democrats folded the moment there was pushback. Their slogan might be “When the going gets tough, wimp out.” So now we have this brief respite, a couple of weeks, before another shutdown looms. Between now and then, the drama kings and queens on Capitol Hill will try to unravel the tangled immigration knot, with 700,000 “Dreamers” uncertain whether they will be deported. Meanwhile, the country is going down the tubes. Quoting Sandburg again, “In these times you have to be an optimist to open your eyes when you awake in the morning.” In these times, an optimist is someone who’s detached from reality. (c) 2018 Bob Franken Distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc.

4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location. In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day. Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible. Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing. 1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias. 2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

Your Seniors becoming more tech-savvy Technology is the future, and digital communication has opened many doors for people around the world. Although younger generations have grown up with technology at their fingers, Baby Boomers and older adults did not. But in spite of that, studies show that growing numbers of seniors are open to the idea of technology and even seeking ways to further their use and knowledge. According to a 2014 study by Pew Research Center, 59 percent of seniors regularly use the internet — a 6 percent increase from the previous study conducted in 2012. Today, 67 percent of adults age 65 and older say they go online. Pew also says that, although seniors consistently have lower rates of technology adoption than the general public, four in 10 seniors now own smartphones, which is more than double the amount that did in 2013. Seniors in Australia are especially tech savvy, as Deloitte’s mobile consumer survey found 78 percent of Australian seniors aged 65 to 75 own a smartphone, up from 69 percent in 2016. While stereotypes have long painted seniors as technologically inept, seniors are actually more socially and digitally engaged than ever before. Seniors use technology in many different ways. Some use mobile apps to manage medications and doctor’s appointments and monitor their fitness regimens. Some families employ 24/7 alert systems or smarthome technology to keep seniors comfortable and safe at home for as long as possible. Noninvasive, “smart” technology can analyze factors such as whether or not doors are left open, if there has been movement in a home, or whether appliances/lights are on or off. This represents a great way for families to stay informed and provide assistance even if they are not nearby. SilverSurfers, a senior-based information website, says other tech that seniors are embracing includes online dating; audio and digital books; online shopping, which is especially valuable to seniors who have mobility issues; and social media, which can keep seniors connected to others and feeling less lonely. A study conducted by researchers from the University of California, San Francisco found 18 percent of American seniors live alone, and 43 percent report feeling lonely on a regular basis. Loneliness can increase death risk. Social media and internet connectivity can be an important tool in helping seniors feel like active members of society. Technology is no longer just for teenagers or active workers. Seniors are increasingly embracing technology and becoming a fast-growing demographic for tech usage.

For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Focus on a career path. Prospective employers prefer that applicants have some certainty regarding the types of jobs they are looking for. Take a career assessment test or work with a career counselor to narrow down the fields and positions that speak to you. Avoid the “I’m willing to do or learn anything” approach to job applications. Employers may see that as desperation.
