I need a home Penny Saver Pet of the Week

Hoyt is a very large boy who is in need of a special home. Please note, we have set specific criteria for him to ensure a positive placement, not to be strict. Please read more about Hoyt at our website.

Going To The Dogs Rescue

Our names are

Jaxon & Sammie.

www.goingtothedogsrescue.org

We didn’t come to our home together, but we have become forever buds. We like to wrestle, chase each other, catch small rodents outside and snuggle up to our owners when the big dopey dog isn’t around!

I need a home

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Zappa is approximately 4 years old. He came to us after his owner passed on. He loves to purr and sit on a warm lap. Zappa would do best in a single pet home. If you would like to meet Zappa please email

But drivers should keep records of all w ork and maintenance done on their vehicles, even if that w ork does not extend beyond routine tuneups or oil changes. Keeping maintenance records show s prospective buyers you prioritized taking care of the vehicle over the years, and that makes the car or truck more attractive to preow ned vehicle buyers w ho w ant to avoid buying a lemon or a car that has not been taken care of.

I’ve read about it, heard about it but this happened to us today. Ordered a couple of drinks at the drive thru of McDonalds and some angel in back of us paid for our order. They gave the cashier a card from a local church we have been to, through, to give to us. Thank you for your kindness toward us. It touched my heart when I was losing faith in people. You were used more than you know by the love you showed toward us. I will pay it forward and do the same as you did. Thank you to the truck behind me in the Tim Horton’s drive through on West Main on Tuesday, February 22. We were all waiting so long to move forward. When I got to the window the worker told me the truck behind me paid for my purchase. Made my day to see there is still that goodness in the world. Thank you. I would like to sincerely

thank my family, all of my many friends, classmates of 1957, and my Methodist Church family, Pastor Jerry Kolber, Pastor Denise McKenzie, and Pastor Tim Hamlin for their many acts of kindness shown to me after my open heart surgery. It was very much appreciated. Sincerely, Mary Ellen Willsey I would like to thank Matt Griffo, Deputy Sheriff Jeff Szczesniak and Jimmy from Harris Service Station for helping me out when my car had a transmission cable mishap on Ward Place. I am truly grateful for Matt’s concern when he happened by and helped me with the dilemma I was in and for Deputy Szczesniak for calling Jimmy to sort out the problem and watching out for traffic. I am forever grateful. Donna B. My husband and I want to give a very special thank you to Charles Webb, the Internet Manager and Sales Consultant at Farnsworth Chevrolet in Canandaigua. Charlie took time with us to make sure we found the perfect car. He is a fantastic salesman and a really great guy. Farnsworth Chevrolet is very lucky to have Charlie on their team! R & L McGovern

American flag flying on its flagpole for at least 9 months? With tuition prices, you would think they could afford a new flagpole rope!

The State Law: Must yield to pedestrians within the crosswalk does not mean “It is ok to walk in front of a vehicle anywhere.” We live in upstate NY. Ever hear of black ice? If a vehicle slides into or even hits you because the driver does not see you walking into traffic between parked cars, YOU will be the one to suffer the pain of being hit, or even worse. The driver may or may not be responsible, but will feel responsible for your carelessness. Is that text you are reading or writing while crossing in front of a vehicle as important as your life? Crosswalks have been provided for your safety. While it may not be convenient for you to walk in one, crosswalks and the law that governs them are for your safety. Shouldn’t you be teaching your children the law and to find a crosswalk?

Why hasn’t a certain private school in [local town] had an

First, to anyone who orders anything at a restaurant or take out; if you use the word EXTRA you should plan on paying EXTRA. Do you go to Tops and take an extra jar of sauce and not expect to pay? Secondly, I don’t know how it’s possible for wings to be dry AND undercooked. Undercooked wings would be soft and rubbery. Something definitely does not add up here. I would guess that it is a mutual relief to both you and the proprietor that you will not be going back.

To the driver in the black SUV who stopped OVER 400 yards short of the train crossing, would you please move into the shoulder of the road so others can stop closer. You stopped a ridiculous distance away, which put others in line close to a quarter mile from the crossing. No, I’m not exaggerating. Then you speed away, wasting gas to cover up your obvious phobia.

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF WATER Water can help people maintain healthy weights. Dieting fads come and go, but water is a mainstay for people who want to control their caloric intake in an effort to maintain healthy weights. Water has zero calories, so reaching for a bottle or glass of water instead of a soda, lemonade or another caloric beverage can help people keep the pounds off. A study from researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center found that even diet soda enhances weight gain by as much as 41 percent. In addition, soda has been linked to conditions such as obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. No such association exists with water.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Vanishes After 35 Years DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 77-year-old man in good health except for irritable bowel syndrome for 35 years. Six months ago, I started taking two low-dose aspirins daily as a preventive, and since then all IBS symptoms have disappeared. Stools and frequency are now normal and without any intense cramping, gas or urgency, which I had for all those years. Frankly, I’m pleasantly shocked, since I thought IBS had no cure. I take no other medications or supplements, so it seems likely that the aspirin has alleviated or maybe cured my IBS. I thought other readers might be interested. Any thoughts? -- B.C. ANSWER: Yours is a very unusual but not unheard of response to aspirin. Most people with IBS find that aspirin and other antiinflammatories worsen IBS symptoms. I have read of others who have the same response you seem to, however. Aspirin remains controversial as a preventive in people without heart disease, but I believe the benefits outweigh the risks in people at high risk for heart disease, even if they are undiagnosed. Always speak with your doctor before beginning a course of aspirin, even if it’s low-dose. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have taken the same dosage of Synthroid for several years. Since this dose successfully maintains my thyroid level, is it still necessary for me to have my bloodwork done once a year, or could I either stop having bloodwork done or have the test performed every other year? -- R.M. ANSWER: In general, the dose of replacement thyroid remains roughly constant over the long term. However, the dose may need to be adjusted for several reasons, including weight change, other medication use, change in absorption due to gastrointestinal developments or pregnancy. Also, even normal aging alters the metabolism of thyroid hormone, so I’d recommend continuing to check levels once yearly at a minimum. The booklet on thyroid disorders provides insight into the various forms and treatment of this disease. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 402W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Several weeks ago, I contracted a bad cold with much congestion. I have received an antibiotic plus nasal spray, and most of the congestion is gone. I have no pain. My concern is that my ears are still partially blocked. I can clear them by pinching my nose and blowing, such as one does in an aircraft, but I must do this frequently. I am worried about hearing damage. I don’t know what else to do. -- R.F. ANSWER: The Eustachian tube connects your middle ear with the back of the throat and equalizes the pressure in your ear. It is common for congestion to linger. Fortunately, it does not permanently damage hearing, and usually goes away by itself. Decongestants can help, but do not use a decongestant spray such as Afrin (oxymetazoline) for more than three days. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

CHARACTERISTIC OF A PERFECT SMILE When researchers recently searched the Internet to find what constitutes a perfect smile, using terms such as “best smile” or “ideal smile” and “celebrities” or “Hollywood,” they selected 32 pictures of famous men and 62 images of famous women. They then compared the celebrity pictures with photographs of 200 dental students using computer software that calculated how close to parallel the line between the pupils and the line between the canine teeth were. They found that the closer to parallel these two lines were, the more pleasing the smile. This study bolsters the findings of previous research that showed that people have a preference for symmetrical faces. Cosmetic dentistry can help patients achieve this goal. Whether you need one tooth restored or a full smile makeover, we

will make sure your teeth look beautiful and feel natural. To schedule a consultation, please call BATAVIA FAMIL Y DENTAL at (585) 343-4246 or visit us at 6 Batavia City Centre. The range of services we provide improves the efficiency and convenience of your dental care. Thanks to innovation in modern dentistry, routine dental treatments have become infinitely more comprehensive. P.S. “Dental contouring” or “tooth reshaping” is a cosmetic dentistry technique that involves removing small amounts of tooth enamel to change the length, shape, or surface of a tooth.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

HOW ART BENEFITS YOUNG BRAINS

Live and let live. ~Scottish Proverb

Art enriches lives and can be used to connect people from all walks of life. Among the many additional benefits of art is its effects on young people and the development of their brains. The American Association of School Administrators notes that neuroscience research has shown that the effects of the arts on a young brain’s cognitive, social and emotional development can be profound.

For a sw eet treat, dip a graham cracker in m elted chocolate chips, lay on w axed paper and quickly sprinkle w ith chopped nuts, candy-coated chocolate or m ore chocolate chips. Allow to harden on the w axed paper before adding into the picnic basket and heading out for your next fam ily adventure. DID YOU KNOW? While parents often struggle to get their children to put down their devices and/or turn off the television, an unscientific 2014 study from researchers at Boston University Medical Center discovered that parents might just be the ones who need to step away from their smartphones. Dr. Jenny Radesky, a developmental pediatrician, and two fellow researchers observed 55 separate groups of caregivers, oftentimes parents, and young children dining at restaurants around Boston. Of the 55 caregivers under observation, 40 used mobile devices during the meal and 16 used such devices throughout the meal. In addition, Radesky and her fellow researchers noticed that children whose caregivers were most absorbed in their devices were more likely to act out.

Norma Alsdorf Celebrates Milestone Birthday! By Allison Case

The celebration was in full swing on Friday, March 3 at Grande’Vie Senior Living community. What kind of celebration? Residents and staff alike gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of resident Norma Alsdorf! Adorned with decorations and flowers, the Caring House, Grande’Vie’s memory care unit, was the setting for the celebration as over 35 residents and staff surprised Alsdorf with a party to help her ring in her 100th year. Alsdorf, who has been a part of the community for over two years, found herself surrounded by family and friends as she was showered with gifts and a delicious cake. The former Palmyra teacher has made an incredible impact on the other residents and staff during her time at Grande’Vie. “She was very excited about turning 100 years young,” Activities Director Theresa Emler said. “Norma was so touched with her surprise party and very grateful to the staff that gave her a beautiful bouquet of flowers and personal gifts from the residents.” Some of those gifts included a new set of comfortable pajamas, hand and body lotions and a stuffed animal. For the staff, they couldn’t be happier to be celebrating such a kind-hearted person. “Norma is an absolute sweetheart and is always concerned about others before herself,” Caring House Coordinator Monica Costanzo said.

Norma Alsdorf admires her cake while celebrating her 100th birthday

“Norma is the most kind and caring person,” Emler added. Norma’s fulfilling 100 years have taught her many lessons and she even shared some of her pearls of wisdom during her party. “Exercise, just be yourself and don’t worry about anything,” Norma said when asked how she got to her 100th year. “I think that really rings true for Norma, as she is always saying how she wants everyone to know who she really is,” Costanzo said. With those excellent pieces of advice from Norma, anyone can live a long and fulfilling life. Happy Birthday Norma and wishing you a great day and many more blessings and celebrations to come!

Adopting a dog or cat later in life Companion animals bring great joy to their owners. The unconditional love cats and dogs provide appeals to people of all ages. While many people associate pets with kids who can’t wait to welcome the first cat or dog into their homes, pets can benefit aging men and women as well. It’s not uncommon for seniors to feel lonely or depressed when they retire, their children move away or they lose a spouse or close friend or friends. The American Humane Society states that studies show pets help seniors overcome loneliness and depression by providing affection, company and entertainment. Pets also provide muchneeded mental stimulation, and many pet owners find their pets help them become more physically active as well. Seniors who adopt pets may also feel a sense of purpose when helping animals who may not have anywhere to live. This is particularly true of older companion animals, which many young families are understandably hesitant to adopt. Mature pets might be an ideal fit for seniors. When seniors are looking to adopt a pet, there are various reasons why older pets or particular animals might be the perfect fit for them. · Adult pets may already be house trained, saving seniors the trouble and effort of training them. · Seniors may find cats fit their lifestyles more than dogs, as cats are less active and do not need to be walked

or played with as much as dogs. Cats also are small and easily maneuverable, meaning even seniors who have arthritis or other physical limitations can easily care for cats. Many cats are also content to spend long periods of time sleeping on their owners’ laps. · Small dogs that can be active within the house might be a good idea as well, especially for seniors with mobility issues. They’re also easily transported to and from vet appointments. It’s important that seniors carefully weigh the benefits of adopting a pet against any limitations they may have. Having a backup plan for care is advantageous as well. Seniors should not adopt a pet if they anticipate frequent travel or medical care that requires they be away from home for long periods of time.

Secret s t o k eeping an organized shed A w ell-organized shed can save homeow ners time and energy, as it’s easy to abandon or delay a project if you can’t find that pair of w ork gloves you stashed. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just w hat needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed. M ake a pile of anything that w ill be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of w hat you have so you know w hether you’re missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another. Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment. Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good investments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to put scrap w ood to use to make your ow n storage shelves or a w ork bench. Extra kitchen cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items. In order to remember w here items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the w all so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of w hich tools are missing and w hich ones need to be purchased. Don’t forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools, such as rakes and shovels, on the inside of the doors so they w ill alw ays be easily accessible. You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for other areas of the home. For example, magnetic knife holders can be mounted to a shed w all to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. M etal funnels can hold tw ine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser. Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and children safe. M ake sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items. Roll in the law nmow er, w heelbarrow and any other cumbersome items. Now that more things are mounted vertically, you should find that you have more area to move around.

Though the importing and use of asbestos has decreased dramatically since the mid-1970s, asbestos is still used in some products. According to the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration, more than a million American employees, many of whom work in the construction industry, face significant exposure to asbestos on the job. A group of minerals that occur naturally as bundles of fibers, asbestos has been linked to cancer, a connection that was ultimately discovered after evidence in the first half of the 20th century increasingly showed that breathing in asbestos caused scarring of the lungs. The most common way people are exposed to asbestos is through asbestos inhalation. Inhalation of asbestos occurs during the mining and production of asbestos and when people are involved in the making of products that contain asbestos. While such products are banned in many countries, including throughout the European Union, some countries have yet to ban the use of asbestos. Asbestos also can be inhaled when people are exposed to insulation that contains asbestos, which is generally found in older homes.

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!

7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY When adopting more eco-friendly lifestyles, it can be easy for men and women to overlook their offices. While drivers can drive in ways that conserve fuel and homeowners can take steps to reduce their energy consumption at home, few people may give as much thought to making their offices more friendly to the environment. But there are many environmentally friendly practices that business owners and their employees can adopt around the office.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put your own voice in the résumé. Rather than using standard verbiage on your résumé, personalize what you want to say. Hiring managers want to hire a human, not a machine. When speaking about yourself, be sure to use strong action words that define your skills even further. HR professionals cite terms like “managed,” “achieved” and “improved” as examples of positive, assertive words.
