I need a home Jasmine

is one of only 3 dogs currently up for adoption with GTTD. She is just over 4 yrs. old & was rescued from the city streets of Rochester, starving & with some pretty bad skin issues. You wouldn’t know it now, she has a gorgeous reverse brindle coat that shines better than your best penny! She would do best in a home with no other dogs. Her best qualities? She has been to training many times and understands tons of basic and advanced commands, so she would do awesome with an owner who knows how to pop a treat into her mouth when she does great things you ask of her. Please spread the word for Miss Jasmine, she has been with us far too long, and unfortunately we have such limited foster families, we cannot bring in any additional dogs until she finds a home.

Going To The Dogs Rescue

please call me Maggie! I am a Cockapoo, my mom is a Standard Poodle and my dad a Cockapoo. I love going for walks in my yard. I am very energetic and try to pick up anything in sight. I enjoy going for car rides and to the pet stores to pick out new toys & treats. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

HometownPhotos So much excitement for this Birthday Boy!

Ryan Douglas and Reid Miano celebrate at Batavia’s Original after the 2018 Ronald McDonald House Exceptional Senior All-Star Boys Basketball Game.

“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?…” ~ Bible, New Testament

Until Jesus’ resurrection, life’s goal seemed to be only a grave. We lived, we died, then we were buried. Christians believe that Jesus went through this sequence also, but with one magnificent difference… He arose from the dead! By thus depriving the grave of its victory, Jesus assured us that we, too, need not merely die. We can have everlasting life after death. It is this promise that gives significance to Easter and makes bereavement more endurable for us all. Easter is a happy time! We hope that you and your family will worship God in the Church of your choice, and have your lives enriched.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Alternate tasks. Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens. By alternating tasks during gardening sessions, gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Alternate tasks not just on muscle groups worked, but also level of difficulty. Remember to include some simple jobs even on busy gardening days so the body gets a break.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING Gardening pointers for novices People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

Animals or insects may feed on the grass from underneath its surface, compromising the lawn’s ability to procure nutrients and water. Animals like moles or raccoons may feed on grubs in the lawn, and treating for grubs can alleviate torn-up turf.

During comprehensive twice-ayear dental checkups, the dentist and hygienist not only perform a professional cleaning and health assessment of the patient’s teeth and gums, but they also screen for signs of oral cancer. Also known as “mouth cancer,” these types of cancers include cancers of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx (throat). If not diagnosed and treated early, these cancers can be life-threatening. Because oral cancer rarely causes pain in its early stages, it is usually only detected by dental professionals, who can spot abnormal cell growth that looks like flat patches. A sore in the mouth that does not heal is the most common symptom of oral cancer. Your total health is always our concern at BATAVIA FAMILY

DENTAL. That’s why all new patient exams are so thorough, so we can establish a baseline against which we can measure your future oral profile and progress. And regular professional checkups make it possible to watch for developing concerns and address them while they are still small, before they can turn into something more serious. For an appointment for advanced, gentle dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances. P.S. Some oral cancers are not detected until they produce symptoms similar to those of a toothache.

FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 2018

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Why All the Hysteria Over Measles Outbreak? --DEAR DR. ROACH: I do not understand the hysteria over the measles outbreak. In my day, every kid had the measles and other childhood diseases, and all survived with strengthened immune systems. Today, young people have no natural defenses against diseases because their immune systems have been compromised by drugs. With the exception of smallpox and polio, childhood diseases are a rite of passage. -- B.W. ANSWER: In the days before vaccines, pretty much every kid did get the measles, but unfortunately, not all of them survived. Although measles death rates were already dropping, before the vaccine was available there were still hundreds of thousands of cases every year, with hundreds of deaths and thousands of cases of severe complications, such as encephalitis, an extremely serious inflammation of the brain that can have long-term repercussions. The vaccine reduced the death rate to essentially zero and the case rate to a few cases per year, mostly from international travelers. Over the decades, the measles vaccine has prevented many thousands of children from death and disability. People, including me, are worried about the measles outbreak because there are many more people now who, because of diseases like HIV and cancer, have immune systems that leave them susceptible to measles, a highly infectious disease. Children under 1 year cannot get the vaccine and the immunity they get from their mother’s immune system wanes over time. Thus, there are many people at high risk for measles in the population now. The measles vaccine strengthens, not weakens, the immune system, and provides lifelong immunity for nearly everybody who gets two doses. There are risks of the vaccine, but serious adverse effects from it are rare. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Have you ever heard of anyone being allergic or sensitive to newspaper print? I read the newspaper from front to back and like to know what the latest news is. I always seem to have burning eyes, itchy nose and some difficulty breathing. Is an allergy possible, and if so, how can I remedy it? -- J.L. ANSWER: It certainly is possible, and there have been some high-profile cases lately, including a Baltimore newspaper reporter. Most often, the chemical is from pine rosin, used in the printing process. An allergist can confirm this with skin testing. Avoiding the newpaper ink is the best solution, which may include simply washing your hands after reading the newspaper, or even using gloves. Worst case, many newspapers have electronic versions that can be read via handheld devices or your computer. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: We are regular readers of your column. At 72, I have fasting labs done every six months (metabolic and lipid panels and yearly vitamin D check). Some doctors say that having coffee in the morning before a blood draw is OK if you don’t use milk or sugar; other doctors say no coffee. What is the professional advice on this? -- D.B. ANSWER: Coffee or tea without milk or sugar does not interfere with the blood testing. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

How to save more for retirement after age 50 Whether it’s advice from their parents, a response to television ads urging viewers to save for retirement, or their own financial savvy, many of today’s young professionals recognize the importance of saving for retirement from the moment they receive their first paychecks. But men and women over 50 may not have been so practical, and many such professionals may feel a need to save more as their retirements draw ever closer. Saving for retirement might seem like a no-brainer, but the National Institute on Retirement Security notes that, in 2017, almost 40 million households in the United States had no retirement savings at all. In addition, the Employee Benefit Research Institute found that Americans have a retirement savings deficit of $4.3 trillion, meaning they have $4.3 trillion less in retirement savings than they should. Men and women over 50 who have retirement savings deficits may need to go beyond depositing more money in their retirement accounts in order to live comfortably and pay their bills in retirement. The following are a few simple ways to start saving more for retirement.

retirement, while others may keep working out of financial need. Others may simply love their jobs and want to keep going until their passion runs out. Regardless of the reason, working past the age of 65 allows men and women to keep earning and saving for retirement, while also delaying the first withdrawal from their retirement savings accounts.

• Redirect nonessential expenses into savings. Some retirement accounts, such as IRAs, are governed by deposit limits. But others, such as 401(k) retirement plans, have no such limits. Men and women can examine their spending habits in an effort to find areas where they can cut back on nonessential expenses, such as cable television subscriptions and dining out. Any money saved each month can then be redirected into savings and/or retirement accounts.

• Reconsider your current and future living situation. Housing costs are many people’s most considerable expense, and that won’t necessarily change in retirement. Even men and women who have paid off their mortgages may benefit by moving to a region with lower taxes or staying in the same area but downsizing to a smaller home where their taxes and utility bills will be lower. Adults who decide to move to more affordable areas or into smaller, less expensive homes can then redirect the money they are saving into interest-bearing retirement or savings accounts.

• Reconsider your retirement date. Deciding to work past the age of 65 is another way men and women over 50 can save more for retirement. Many professionals now continue working past the age of 65 for a variety of reasons. Some may suspect they’ll grow bored in

Many people begin saving for retirement the moment they cash their first professional paycheck. But even adults over the age of 50 sometimes feel a need to save more as their retirement dates draw closer, and there are many ways to do just that.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP LED road flares: Traditional road flares tend to burn out rather quickly, with some lasting as little as 15 minutes. That can be a problem for travelers who experience car trouble and end up stranded far away from auto body shops. Some flameless LED road flares can last for hours on end off of a single charge, providing drivers with some peace of mind should they be stranded and forced to wait awhile before a tow truck or mechanic arrives.

PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL: The Commerce Department announced the reinstatement of a citizenship question on the 2020 census that has not been used since the 1950s. This comes as a response to a request from the Justice Department who claims to need the information to help prevent racial discrimination and protect minority voting rights while opponents say that it will cause immigrants to avoid taking the census fearing that the government could use the information to target them. How do you feel about decision to add this question to the census? •␣This is a targeted move designed to identify those who already feel vulnerable. • We need this information to get an accurate picture of our population. • It shouldn’t be an issue for anyone who is in the US legally. Volunteers of America Upstate New York Presents the Maud Booth Award to Penelope Pankow By Chaz Goodman Volunteers of America Upstate New York (VOA) presented its highest honor, the Maud Booth award, to Penelope Pankow for her extraordinary commitment to the organization at the agency’s Donor and Volunteer Appreciation event that was held on Thursday, March 8th, during Volunteers of America Week, at Frontier Field. Named after Volunteers of America’s co-founder, the Maud Booth Award is reserved for individuals who have shown exemplary leadership, commitment, and service to the agency, its programs, and those served by VOA. In addition to serving on VOA’s Board of Directors for 9 years, Ms. Pankow has been an active supporter during her near decade of service. Ms. Pankow’s concern for the rising poverty rates in Rochester and a desire to help families and individuals in need drew her to volunteer with VOA. She first got involved working with VOA’s residential re-entry center for men and women leaving prison. “Giving people a hand up at a time when their lives can go dramatically in one direction or another matters greatly,” she says. Ms. Pankow has since served on the Board of Directors, including a term as Board Chair, co-chair of the CEO search committee, and chair of the Governance Committee. Ms. Pankow is a generous supporter of VOA’s programs which include: early education and summer camps for impoverished children, job readiness training for low income adults, and re-entry programming for incarcerated individuals. Each of these programs works to further the VOA mission to empower people in the community to rise out of poverty, move toward self-reliance, and reach their full potential. “I believe VOA is on the cusp of becoming much more prominently recognized in our community,” Ms. Pankow says. “As more people understand what we do, our ability to serve will grow.” A Rochester resident for 30 years, Ms. Pankow moved here from Los Angeles to work at Eastman Kodak before starting F. Oliver’s, her own culinary hospitality business. Others recognized at the event

Penelope Pankow at F. Oliver’s

include: Rochester City Police Investigator Otto Harnischfeger (Community Citizenship Award), Rochester City Firefighter Jason Ashton (Community Citizenship Award), Joanne Chada (Community Volunteer of the Year), and UniLink (Corporate Supporter of the Year). About Volunteers of America Upstate New York: Volunteers of America Upstate New York (VOA) is a local non-profit human service organization that serves more than 6,000 men, women and children annually in Rochester and throughout Upstate New York. The agency’s mission is to empower people in our community to rise out of poverty, move toward self-reliance, and reach their full potential. VOA offers a wide array of programming in four key areas: early childhood education; supportive housing for homeless and low income individuals and families; job readiness/workforce development services; and reentry programs for individuals who are or have been incarcerated. Volunteers of America Week is a celebration of the 122nd anniversary of the agency’s national founding on March 8th, 1896.

OATKA EDITION

And Spring arose on the garden fair, Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere; And each flower and herb on Earth’s dark breast rose from the dreams of its wintry rest. ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley, “The Sensitive Plant”

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Rumors of a change in the workplace could make you a mite uneasy about going ahead with implementing your ideas. Best advice: Ignore the talk and proceed as planned. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Everyone has an opinion on how to handle a recent business suggestion. Thank them for their advice. Then go ahead and follow your own fine instincts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) While home is your main focus this week, new issues in the workplace need your attention as well. Take things step by step. Pressures ease in time for weekend fun. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Be less rigid when handling a relationship problem. You might believe you’re in the right, but try to open your mind to the possibilities of facts you’re currently not aware of. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Leos and Leonas run at a hectic pace throughout much of the week. But by the weekend, the Lions’ Dens become a purrrfect place for you Fine Felines to relax in. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Change is favored early in the week. This should make it easier for you to reassess your plans for handling a troubling professional relationship. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A suggestion from a colleague could give your professional project that long-needed boost. Meanwhile, someone close to you still needs your emotional support. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before complying with a colleague’s request, check to see that the action benefits all, not just one person’s agenda. Continue firming up those travel plans. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your social life is on the upswing, and the only problem is deciding which invitations to accept. Enjoy yourself before settling down for some serious work next week. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) With your creative aspects on high, you might want to restart your work on that novel or painting you put aside. Your efforts will bring a surge in your self-esteem. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) While you’re generous with others, be sure you’re not overlooking your own needs. Take time to assess your situation and make adjustments where necessary. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Being applauded for your achievement is great. But watch out that you don’t start acting like a star. It could lose you valuable support with your next project. BORN THIS WEEK: Your strong belief in justice, along with your leadership qualities, help you protect the rights of others.

Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

On Saturday, March 24th, the Town of Riga held its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Sanford Road Park. The sun was shining and the snow had melted so Egg Hunters from 1 to 10 years of age went onto the grass and into 2 huge straw piles to hunt for over 2,000 eggs and the “Special Eggs." The hunters also were treated to arts & crafts, face painting, airbrush tattoos, and caricatures! Thanks go out to the following organizations and individuals that made this event possible – Kohlman Farms, Marty Molinari and his members of the Churchville “LEO” Club, the Riga Highway Department, “Face Painter," Adrianna Wellin, Kathy & Cindy from Arlene’s

To the ignorant, emotional people ranting about leashing a pet, take time to find out why the pet is caged/leashed before accusing the owners of "animal cruelty," calling the police, ruining that person's life and possibly having their beloved pet taken away. wander regardless of training. The owner loves their dog and is being responsible by leashing them so they don't wander into the road and get killed. Though I do see dogs of other breeds playing in the road, and someday a driver is not going to be able to stop in time! Fence in, or leash your wandering dogs if you care about them. It is not cruelty. It's common sense. A leashed puppy? Perhaps it is IN training? Think before you baselessly accuse. It's not all black and white.

I need to add my opinion about re-gifting. If you do not like the gift you are re-gifting, chances are the recipient will not like it either. One Christmas my friend, a Scotch drinker, received Irish Cream as an obvious regift. Needless to say we stopped exchanging after that. We asked around and gave it to someone who took it as a favor to us. Please think twice before regifting that disliked present to someone else. There is a reason you do not like it. Chances are the re-gifted recipient won't appreciate it either.

It is ludicrous that a child could be suspended for more than a year for flashing someone and rumor has it that children who posed a bomb threat to the school may end up with less than 2 months.

I have a certified dog through Therapy Dog International who went through 9 weeks of obedience classes and 9 weeks of therapy dog training and passed a locally administered test through Therapy Dog International. We work at a local grade school and Community Center with seniors so we are giving back to the same community that is charging us for a license! All other area towns waive the licensing fee for therapy dogs and some even offer free licenses if owners are seniors. Why does our town charge.....do they need the money that badly?
