Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

• On April 24, 1800, President John Adams approves $5,000 to establish the Library of Congress. The first library catalog, dated April 1802, listed 964 volumes and nine maps.

People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

DID YOU KNOW? The Ford Motor Company’s Model T was offered in several styles, not unlike how vehicles of today are offered in various models. Among the Model T styles available was a two-seat runabout, which can be considered a precursor to the coupe style popular today, and a seven-seat town car, which might be considered an ancestor of today’s SUV, at least with regard to passenger capacity. While prospective Model T drivers had some options when choosing which Model T they wanted to purchase, between 1913 and 1925 the car was produced only in black. The Model T engine was a 4-cylinder engine that generated 20 horsepower. To put that latter figure into perspective, many of today’s riding lawn mowers are 20 horsepower, and some commercial lawn riding mowers provide as much as 40 horsepower. While car dealers might not sell too many cars featuring 4-cylinder, 20 horsepower engines today, historical estimates suggest that more than 15 million Model T’s were built and sold between 1908 and 1927, the last year the car was produced.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. If you want to disconnect from the world, you can always switch your phone to airplane mode. But keeping the phone charged can help in case of emergency.

THE MEANING BEHIND EASTER SYMBOLS Clothing: New clothing is another symbol of Easter that traces its origins back further than many Christians may realize. It’s customary for present-day Christians to don their Sunday best when attending Easter Sunday Mass, and the tradition of looking sharp on Easter can be traced to the early Christians, who would wear new white robes for baptisms during Easter services. Eventually, all Easter celebrants began to wear new clothes during Easter services.

How aging women can fight fibromyalgia pain As the body ages, aches and pains might become more difficult for men and women to handle. While not all pain is indicative of a disorder or condition, aging women who experience pain may be suffering from fibromyalgia. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases notes that fibromyalgia is a common and chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain. While anyone can get fibromyalgia, the NIAMS says that between 80 and 90 percent of those diagnosed are women and that sufferers are most often diagnosed in middle age. Doctors may prescribe medication to help women fight pain resulting from fibromyalgia, and there are some additional ways to combat that pain as well. · Get enough sleep. The NIAMS says that getting enough sleep can help ease the pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia. To ensure a better night’s sleep, women should adopt sleep schedules so they go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, including on weekends and during vacations. Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the late afternoon and evening, as both substances can make it more difficult to sleep soundly. In addition, avoid reading or working while in bed, as such activities can stimulate the body, making it harder to fall asleep as a result. · Exercise regularly. Exercising while in pain may seem counterintuitive, but the NIAMS notes that numerous

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On April 26, 1986, the world’s worst nuclear accident to date occurs at the Chernobyl nuclear plant near Kiev in Ukraine. The full toll from the disaster is still being tallied, but experts believe that thousands of people died and as many as 70,000 suffered severe radiation poisoning. studies have indicated that regular exercise is an effective treatment for fibromyalgia. When beginning a new exercise regimen, take things slowly at first, gradually building up your endurance levels and amping up the intensity of your workouts as your body acclimates itself to exercise. · Change your diet. Some women suffering from fibromyalgia have reported feeling better when they began to avoid certain foods, though the NIAMS points out that there is no specific diet connected to reducing fibromyalgia-related pain. The AARP notes that foods such as red grapes and cherries and herbs and spices, such as ginger and turmeric, can help aging women combat pain. · Examine your work space. Working women who are dealing with fibromyalgia may benefit by examining their work spaces and adapting those spaces to make them more comfortable. Replace desk chairs if they do not provide adequate support and speak with an occupation therapist regarding other ways to make work stations more comfortable.

D id you kn ow? You do not need a referral from your dentist to see us! Has your dentist recommended extractions, implants, periodontal work, or any other specialty treatment? We recommend a consult from an oral surgeon before proceeding with treatment. Many of our patients are surprised to find that general dentists indeed charge more for a procedure than the specialist (oral surgeon) does, as many of the procedures are routine for a surgeon, but not a dentist. At Steinhilber OMS, we always encourage and welcome questions. If you would like more information, please call or email our office.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

RECESSION WORRIES Receding gums, known as “gingival recession,” is a common condition that occurs when the gum tissue that normally surrounds the tooth pulls back and exposes the tooth root. If the recession goes untreated and becomes severe, there is increased risk that the exposed tooth root will become decayed and/ or infected. If gum recession is caused by physical wear of the gums by vigorous brushing or the use of a toothbrush with hard bristles, the dentist will recommend a softer brush and better brushing technique. If gum disease is at the root of the problem, the dentist will work to remove builtup plaque and tartar accumulations. Tooth-colored composite resins may also be recommended to cover exposed root surfaces. Taking care of your teeth and gums is vital to maintaining a

beautiful smile and staying healthy for life. If you are only mildly affected by receding gums, that’s good! If you catch it early, you may not require professional treatment to fix it. Your dentist will help you identify the cause and will instruct you in how to address it. You may have to reevaluate your flossing habits, get a mouth guard and buy a different toothbrush. To schedule an appointment, please call (585) 3434246. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Age is a leading risk factor for gum recession, with 88 percent of people over the age of 65 having receding gums in at least one tooth.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have peripheral neuropathy symptoms in my feet. I am borderline diabetic and keep it under control by eating right. Also, my legs are weak, and I am doing exercises. I was taking the drug Reglan for a couple of months. During the time I was taking it was when I started to have these leg problems. Could this be a side effect of the Reglan? -- G.D. ANSWER: Diabetic neuropathy is a complication of longstanding diabetes, especially if it has been poorly controlled. Occasionally, it can show up seemingly early in the course of Type 2 diabetes, but this is thought to represent a delay in diagnosis in otherwise asymptomatic disease or in those who have ignored symptoms. The symptoms of diabetic neuropathy usually begin with numbness, and later on pain and tingling of the feet. Weakness, when it happens, generally comes later on. Metoclopramide (Reglan) is used for nausea and vomiting, especially after chemotherapy, and is used to stimulate the stomach emptying in people with diabetic gastroparesis, which is a type of neuropathy of the nerves to the stomach and intestines. Many or most diabetics with gastroparesis also have diabetic neuropathy. However, metoclopramide should not be given for more than eight weeks due to the risk of tardive dyskinesia, a serious disease of motor control, especially in the facial muscles. Although tardive dyskinesia can cause symptoms in the limbs, weakness would be unusual, and tardive dyskinesia would be very unusual if you took the Reglan only for two months and have stopped. I think it is unlikely that either diabetic neuropathy or the Reglan are causing the muscle weakness. There are many kinds of neuropathies, and all (or nearly all) are more common in people with diabetes. I would revisit your doctor to try to find out more about why you are having leg weakness. READERS: Diabetes has become epidemic in North America. The booklet on it offers insight into its diagnosis and treatment. Order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 402W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: We always hear about “superfoods” and their antioxidant power. Is there any truth to the hype? -- H.C. ANSWER: I know what you are saying; blueberries, kale and acai berries often are called “superfoods.” I don’t really know what “superfood” means. These foods are generally healthy, as part of a balanced diet, but it doesn’t mean that eating them can make you live forever -- or even erase bad food choices. To me, a healthy diet is one with lots of diversity -- many different fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and fish and limited amounts (or none) of red meat, saturated fat and processed foods. Health isn’t found by sticking to a fad diet, but by a lifetime of healthy eating, regular exercise, stress reduction, good social interactions and being fortunate enough to avoid injury and disease. Making good choices dramatically improves your odds of a healthy life. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

“I have never for one instant seen clearly within myself. How then would you have me judge the deeds of others…” ~ Maurice Maeterlinck

FRIDAY, APRIL 14, 2017

The family of Shirley Brown would like to thank all our family and friends for your cards, calls, prayers and Alzheimer’s Association donations in her honor. Gary & Martha Cappotelli, Fran Pierce & Ed Gwynn

We might assume that Maeterlinck, the Belgian poet and dramatist probably best-known for his “Blue Bird”, which taught us that happiness could be found right at home, would be superbly self-assured. It’s surprising that he confesses that he, like many of us, has difficulty seeing clearly within himself. Because we’re not too sure what really makes us tick, we should not be too quick to judge the way others choose to live their lives. This assumes, of course, that their lifestyle does not interfere with ours. We can provide funeral services in any price category, starting with minimum cost immediate disposition. The cost of a funeral is entirely a matter of family preference.

HOLY SATURDAY Holy Saturday marks the final day of the Triduum, or the three days preceding Easter Sunday. Scripture states that Holy Saturday was when Jesus’ body was placed in the tomb.

Thank you to the very kind women who stopped on RT 21 in Shortsville on Sunday, to help me with the man who collapsed with all his grocery bags full of food on the sidewalk. This was Sunday, April 2 at 3 PM. So many people just drove by, but you stopped to help me with him and gave him a ride home. You were driving a dark silver Dodge van. THANK- YOU for caring; you made my day, and I’m sure you made his day. I didn’t get your name but I hugged you! Thank you again for taking time out of your busy day to add some kindness to this world. You are a very caring person. Thank you! Thank you! LIVINGSTON COUNTY SHERIFFS Mike Bradley & Doug Morsch: Thank you so much for unlocking my car door on April 2 in the parking lot in Geneseo!! On March 27 my husband had minor eye surgery. Afterwards we stopped at Batavia Town and Country to get some breakfast. We paid our bill and left. All of a

sudden our sweet waitress was flagging us down in the car to return $ that had fallen on our seat in the restaurant. No one would have known if she kept it herself, but she did the right thing. There are so many good people in our world, but so inspiring to be the recipient of kindness and honesty! Digital Ink Arts, going into the 3rd year, would like to thank businesses in Batavia who have given us the chance to print your apparel! You are appreciated! Rather than leaving your used furniture on the curb please contact an agency which can match it with someone in need. In the March 31, 2017 “Give and Take” there is a request for furniture which will be donated to “working poor families”: 585-343-5452 or director@ministryofconcer n.org. Restore Habitat for Humanity in Canandaigua will take furniture (3963600). Goodwill in Geneseo will accept furniture, as will the Methodist Thrift Shop in Livonia (346-3223). Many people would welcome your furniture into their homes, but once it has sat in the rain/snow it is useless and will only end up clogging our landfills. Take a moment and find a way to recycle your furniture, someone will thank you!

To the cashier venting about customers - on the other hand, I find it really rude when you and another cashier are chit chatting when I am checking out. It’s not a social visit with your fellow worker when I’m being waited on. You barely acknowledge the paying customer because you feel like you need to socialize. I’m a paying customer. Make an effort to give me eye contact and pay attention to me instead of catching up on the latest with your coworker. Also, for heavens sake give me time to put my card in my wallet and stop shoving the bag toward me until I get situated. All too often, one second after the transaction ends my bag is shoved toward me before I get a chance to put my card away. I do not like that. I then turn around to say thank you and you’re already ringing up the next customer. While walking our Labrador retriever up at the [local] school, which we do 5 days a week, along with our daughter with her German Shepherd we ran across some

very UNFRIENDLY people. We always let our dogs run around off leash and play, when we see people we call them and put them back on the leash. However, this night just starting to get dark, our Labrador spotted 3 cocker spaniel-looking dogs, before we did. We called the dogs and they were way too excited and wanted to play and meet and kept running toward the dogs. NOT at all are our dogs aggressive, the lab attends dog daycare once a week and is very well socialized. You screamed at the dogs, vulgar language and then said you would report us??? Sorry you are perfect, may I suggest you & your dogs both get socialization skills!! I think it is an absolute shame that I cannot find an apartment to rent in the city or town, or even nearby, because nearly EVERY ad that I see openly state NO PETS. I have two older, wellbehaved dogs that have never destroyed anything and wouldn’t hurt a fly. Yet, even the ads that don’t openly state NO PETS, when I call to inquire, immediately say no pets or put such huge restrictions and weight limits on dogs that my beloved pets STILL don’t qualify. I can understand that people don’t want their rentals destroyed, but at least meet the animals before you turn them away.
